On a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer, open the gear icon at the top right of the screen, choose All settings > Display & Sound, then select Advanced display settings when it appears. Resolution, HDR format behavior, frame-rate matching, color format and game mode may be listed there or directly under Display & Sound. A television with Google TV built in can use a different menu supplied by the TV manufacturer.
First identify which Google TV device you are using
“Google TV” can mean either a streaming device connected to an HDMI input or the software built into a television. That distinction determines where display controls live.
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer
The procedure in this guide applies directly to Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer. These devices generate the video signal and expose output controls such as resolution, dynamic range, color format and frame-rate matching.

A television with Google TV built in
When Google TV is the television’s built-in operating system, some controls belong to the television manufacturer rather than to Google’s streaming-device menu. Look in the TV’s own Picture, Display, HDMI or Input menus if an option is missing from Display & Sound. Menu names and available settings vary by model, firmware and the connected equipment.

Open the display settings
- Turn on the Google TV device and the television.
- From the Google TV screen, move to the top-right corner and select the gear icon for All settings.
- Choose Display & Sound.
- Select the control you need. Depending on the device and television, it may be called Resolution, Text scaling, Dynamic range & color format or Match content frame rate.
- Open Advanced display settings when that entry is present. Google lists Allow game mode and Format selection in this area.
Do not assume every item will be nested under Advanced display settings. Some firmware versions place a control directly on the Display & Sound page, and a device may hide an option that the connected television cannot support.
What each advanced display control changes
| Control | What it changes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Chooses a supported output resolution for the streaming device. | Use it to select the highest mode the TV and HDMI path can reliably handle, or temporarily move from 4K to 1080p while diagnosing picture problems. |
| Text scaling | Changes the size of interface text where the device exposes the option. | Increase it when menus are difficult to read; reduce it if large text crowds the interface. |
| Dynamic range & color format | Selects the available dynamic-range and color-format behavior. | Use it when color, contrast or compatibility differs between the TV and the streaming device. |
| Match content frame rate | Lets the device match the source content’s frame rate when supported. | Enable it when you want playback to follow the frame rate of the program rather than using one output rate for everything. |
| Allow game mode | Enables a game mode intended to reduce latency and improve response time. | Use it for game input when quick controller-to-screen response matters. |
| Format selection | Controls whether apps select HDR formats automatically or whether you choose HDR formats manually. | Use automatic selection for normal operation; use manual selection as a diagnostic tool when HDR causes a compatibility problem. |
The exact choices inside these controls are not universal. Google TV only displays formats and resolutions that the device, television and HDMI connection report as available.
Change the output resolution
Choose a supported mode
- Open All settings > Display & Sound.
- Select Resolution. If it is inside Advanced display settings on your device, open that section first.
- Choose one of the resolutions shown as supported.
- Allow the picture to renegotiate, then check a familiar video and the Google TV interface.
Resolution is an output setting, not a guarantee that every streaming service will deliver that resolution. The service, title, subscription, network conditions and display chain can all affect the quality you see. The setting determines what the device sends toward the television.

Use 1080p as a diagnostic setting
If 4K playback is unstable, Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying 1080p. This is a test, not proof that the television or cable is defective. If 1080p produces a stable picture while 4K does not, the result points toward a bandwidth, compatibility or HDMI-handshake issue somewhere in the chain. Continue checking the TV input, any receiver or soundbar, the cable and the streaming device.

Auto low latency mode and quick media switching for movies and video use the HDMI VRR mechanism to eliminate the blackout period when an HDMI Source device switches its video mode
- Dynamic HDR & eARC: This HDMI Cable features Dynamic HDR to let you capture more details with 12-bit color accuracy and get breathtakingly realistic pictures. The function of eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) directly delivers full-resolution audio, like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X from TV to soundbar/AV receiver. Also Support HDCP 2.3/2.2, Ethernet, 3D
- Enhanced durability: Built with a robust aluminum alloy case, nickel-plated connectors, and a durable nylon braided jacket, HDMI cables can withstand more frequent bending tests and decrease rupture without reducing cable flexibility, ensuring enhanced signal transmission performance and a longer lifespan
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
Return to the highest stable supported resolution after troubleshooting. Do not select a mode solely because it has a larger number: a reliable lower mode is more useful than a 4K setting that repeatedly loses the picture.
Change HDR and dynamic-range behavior
Understand automatic and manual format selection
Open All settings > Display & Sound > Advanced display settings > Format selection when that path is available. Automatic lets apps choose among the HDR formats the device and TV report as compatible. Manual lets you turn individual HDR formats on or off.
HDR format selection is separate from resolution. A device can be set to 4K while HDR is disabled, or use HDR at a supported resolution. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which setting affects the picture.
Turn HDR formats off for a diagnostic test on Google TV Streamer (4K)
- Open Settings > Display & Sound.
- Select Advanced display settings > Format selection.
- Choose Manual.
- Turn off the available HDR formats.
- Play the same non-HDR and HDR titles again and compare the result.
This test helps separate an HDR negotiation problem from a general resolution or HDMI problem. Restore the formats you want after the test. The available list depends on the connected television.

Fix oversaturated non-HDR video
If ordinary, non-HDR video looks unusually saturated, Google notes that HDR may have been enabled automatically. Turn on the content-matching option so the device can follow the source content’s range instead of treating every program as HDR. The label and location can vary, so look for the matching control under Display & Sound or its advanced subsection.
Check the TV’s HDMI signal mode
When HDR output does not work, some televisions require the HDMI input to use an enhanced signal mode. Manufacturers use different labels for this setting. Select the HDMI input used by the Google TV device and inspect the TV’s own HDMI, Input or external-device menu for the enhanced option. If the TV is connected through a receiver or soundbar, check the corresponding input and output settings there as well.
Match content frame rate
Match content frame rate allows the streaming device to follow the source program’s frame rate when the feature is supported. This setting is independent of resolution and HDR. Enabling it can make the output better correspond to the content, while leaving it off keeps the device at its usual output behavior.
Recommended Free Tools
- Go to All settings > Display & Sound.
- Select Match content frame rate, or open Advanced display settings first if your device places it there.
- Turn the option on or off, then test the same title.
If the option is absent, the device or connected display may not expose support for it. Its absence does not indicate that the television is faulty.

Enable game mode and adjust text scaling
Allow game mode
Allow game mode is listed by Google under Advanced display settings. Game mode is intended to reduce latency and improve game response time. Enable it when a console, cloud-gaming app or other game source is connected through the Google TV device and input response is more important than extra picture processing.
- Open All settings > Display & Sound > Advanced display settings.
- Turn on Allow game mode.
- Run the same game or interactive app and check whether control response improves.
The option affects the behavior offered by the Google TV device; a television may also have its own picture-side game setting. If the TV’s picture menu contains a separate game mode, consult that model’s instructions before changing it.
Text scaling
Select Text scaling from Display & Sound when it is available. Increase the size for more legible menus or decrease it if text takes up too much of the interface. Text scaling changes the Google TV interface, not the resolution of the video stream.

A 1080p output can result from the capabilities reported by the TV or another HDMI device, an incompatible signal path, or a failed negotiation between devices. The settings menu cannot offer a mode that the connected chain does not report as supported.

Check the entire HDMI path
- Confirm that the television input selected on screen is the one physically connected to the Google TV device.
- If the signal passes through an AV receiver or soundbar, check both its input and output HDMI connections and settings.
- Inspect the cable between the streaming device and the next device in the chain, then the cable from that device to the TV.
- Check the TV’s own HDMI input mode, especially if HDR or 4K is unavailable.
- Reopen Display & Sound and see which resolutions and formats are actually offered after the connections are in place.
Use a lower mode to isolate the fault
Set the device to 1080p temporarily if 4K produces dropouts, a blank screen or repeated renegotiation. If the problem disappears, test the direct TV connection, the intermediate receiver or soundbar, and the cable separately. A stable 1080p result narrows the problem to the higher-bandwidth path; it does not identify a single defective component by itself.
Use an appropriate cable for Google TV Streamer (4K)
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for Google TV Streamer (4K), particularly when the HDMI chain includes 4K-capable equipment. The cable recommendation applies to the connection requirements of that device and does not mean that every older Google TV product needs the same cable class.
What to do when an option is missing
- Advanced display settings is not shown: Check the main Display & Sound page; some controls appear there directly.
- Resolution choices are limited: The connected TV or an intermediate HDMI device may be reporting fewer supported modes.
- HDR controls are absent: The television, input or HDMI path may not advertise HDR support, or the device may expose only the formats it can use automatically.
- Frame-rate matching is absent: The feature may not be supported by that device and display combination.
- The menu differs from these labels: Google TV menus vary by model and firmware. On a built-in Google TV television, use the manufacturer’s Picture, Display, HDMI or Input menus.
Do not force a setting that is not offered. The available list is the device’s compatibility result for the current television and HDMI path.
A safe order for changing settings
Changing several display variables at once makes troubleshooting difficult. Use this order when you are diagnosing a picture or compatibility problem:
- Record the current resolution, HDR behavior and frame-rate setting.
- Check the selected TV input and every device between the streamer and the TV.
- Test resolution first, using 1080p if 4K is unstable.
- Test HDR through Format selection, using manual mode only long enough to isolate the issue.
- Check the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode if HDR still fails.
- Test frame-rate matching separately.
- Enable game mode only when gaming latency is the priority, and adjust text scaling independently of video tests.
- Restore the settings that provide the highest stable picture and the behavior you actually need.
This sequence keeps resolution, HDR, frame rate, latency and interface readability as separate decisions. It also gives you a clear comparison point whenever the picture changes.
Quick Recap
Key limitations to keep in mind
- The documented paths apply directly to Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer; a built-in Google TV television can use a different menu system.
- Menu names and available options change with the device model, firmware and connected TV capabilities.
- Resolution, HDR format selection and content frame-rate matching are separate controls; changing one does not automatically change the others.
- A 1080p diagnostic result shows that the lower mode is more stable under the current conditions, not that a particular cable, TV or receiver is definitely defective.
- HDR may require an enhanced HDMI signal mode on the television, with the exact label determined by the TV manufacturer.
