The fastest way to stop a forgotten subscription is to find the account that is billing you, then cancel it in that billing platform. On an iPhone, check the Apple Account’s Subscriptions list. On Android, check Google Play > Subscriptions. If the subscription is missing, the charge may belong to another account, a family member, or a direct payment arrangement with the service.
Deleting the app does not cancel recurring billing. Cancellation normally stops the next renewal while leaving access available for time you have already paid for. Use the steps and checks below to identify the biller, cancel renewal, and keep proof that the cancellation went through.
Start with the billing route, not the phone
An app’s presence on your phone does not tell you where its subscription is managed. The same service can be installed on an iPhone or Android phone while billing is handled by Apple, Google Play, the service itself, or another payment provider. The subscription list you need is the list belonging to the account that accepted your payment.

If you are unsure which route applies, do not keep trying random cancellation screens. First identify the merchant on the charge. That prevents you from canceling an unrelated account while the real subscription continues.

Collect the clues before canceling
Have the latest charge, the email address you might have used, and access to your Apple or Google accounts available. A few minutes of identification work is usually faster than repeatedly signing in to the wrong account.
Read the bank or card statement
Look at the merchant name, charge date, amount, and currency. The statement identifies the company that actually submitted the payment, which may be different from the app’s name. Save a screenshot or download the transaction details before you begin. If the statement names a service rather than Apple or Google, start with that service’s account and support channel.
Search every likely email inbox
Search for the service name plus terms such as “receipt,” “invoice,” “renewal,” or “subscription.” For Apple-billed purchases, Apple recommends searching for receipt from Apple or invoice from Apple. Google recommends checking other email accounts for the purchase receipt. The receipt normally reveals the account used and the company that collected the payment.
List the accounts that could have subscribed
Write down each Apple Account and Google Account you use, including an older address. A subscription can be active under an account that is not currently selected on the phone. If a family member made the purchase, that person’s account may be the one with cancellation authority.
Check whether the charge is a family purchase
Family sharing can make a subscription appear to belong to someone else in the household. The account holder who started the subscription must cancel it. Ask that person to follow the platform steps while signed in to their own account.
Cancel an Apple-billed subscription on iPhone
These steps apply when Apple processed the recurring payment.
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap your name at the top to open the Apple Account panel.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the subscription you want to stop.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, then follow the confirmation prompts.
After confirming, reopen the subscription entry and check its status. If there is no Cancel Subscription button, or an expiration message appears in red, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. Keep a screenshot of that status and retain any confirmation email.

Cancel from the web when you do not have the original iPhone
Apple also provides subscription management through the Apple Account website. Sign in with the Apple Account that received the receipt, open the subscription list, select the service, and choose the cancellation option. This is useful when the phone was replaced, lost, or reset. If the subscription is not listed after signing in, treat that as an account or billing-route clue rather than proof that the charge ended.
Stop a free trial before it renews
For Apple trials, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you want to avoid the first paid renewal. Do not wait for the final hour: account, device, or regional processing can make last-minute confirmation harder. Verify that the trial now shows an expiration or canceled status.
Regional differences
Apple notes that cancellation details can differ in some countries and regions, specifically including Germany, Israel, South Africa, and Türkiye. If the controls or timing on your account do not match the steps above, use the current regional instructions shown in your Apple Account rather than assuming the subscription is active or canceled.
Cancel a Google Play subscription on Android
Use these steps when Google Play processed the charge.

- Make sure the selected Google Account is the one used when subscribing. Tap the account switcher if necessary.
- Open Subscriptions and select the service.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until Google confirms the cancellation.
Google also lists an Android Settings route: Settings > Google > Manage your Google Account > Payments & subscriptions > Manage subscriptions. This route is useful when you cannot immediately locate the Play Store menu. Select the correct Google Account before interpreting the list.
Confirm the result
Open the canceled subscription again and look for its end date or canceled status. Save the confirmation screen or email. The date shown is the end of the period already paid for; it is not necessarily the date you pressed the cancellation button.
Uninstalling is not cancellation
Removing an app only removes its software from the phone. Google explicitly states that uninstalling does not cancel the subscription. If you already deleted the app, reinstalling it is optional; go directly to Google Play’s subscription list and cancel there.

When the subscription does not appear
A missing entry usually has an identifiable cause. Work through these checks in order and do not assume that no listing means no future charge.

On iPhone, confirm the Apple Account shown in Settings is the one named on the receipt. On Android, open Google Play’s account switcher and check every Google Account you use. Google notes that a subscription may belong to another account. Sign out and back in only if needed; switching the account in the store is normally enough to inspect its subscriptions.
2. Search other email accounts
Search personal, work, and older addresses for receipts and invoices. A receipt can identify an account even when the app is logged in with a different email. For Apple, search specifically for “receipt from Apple” or “invoice from Apple.” For Google, check each inbox for the purchase confirmation.
3. Ask whether a family member subscribed
If the charge is connected to a family group, the subscription may not appear in your own account. The family member whose account made the purchase must open their Apple or Google subscription list and cancel it. A shared device does not make every family member an owner of the billing relationship.
4. Check Google Wallet when Google Play is unclear
Google lists Google Wallet as another place to check for a missing subscription. Review the payment activity and account selection there, then compare the merchant and date with your bank statement.
5. Match the charge to the statement
If there is no Apple receipt, Apple advises identifying and contacting the company shown as the biller. The same principle applies to any charge that does not match a store receipt: the merchant on the statement is the party that can explain the billing route and provide its cancellation process.
6. Consider direct or alternative billing
A service may have accepted payment on its own website or through an alternative billing system. Such a subscription can be active even though neither Apple’s nor Google Play’s subscription center lists it. Use the service name from the receipt or statement, sign in to that service, and look for its account, plan, billing, or membership page. If the controls are not available, contact the developer or provider and include the transaction date and amount.

How to tell who is billing you
Use a simple evidence chain rather than guessing from the app icon:
- Record the exact merchant text, date, amount, and currency on the statement.
- Search email for that merchant, the app name, and receipt or invoice terms.
- Open the Apple Account or Google Account named in the receipt and inspect its subscription list.
- If no store receipt exists, open the service’s website or support page using the merchant name from the statement.
- Ask the merchant to confirm the account and cancellation status before requesting any payment reversal.
Do not send full card numbers or passwords in a support message. Provide only the transaction details the merchant needs to locate the charge, and use the company’s authenticated support or account page when available.

What cancellation actually changes
Renewal normally stops; access usually continues
Google says a canceled subscription remains usable for the time already paid, then does not renew. In practice, the subscription’s status should show an end date or expiration rather than an immediate loss of features. A cancellation confirmation is therefore different from a refund and different from deleting the app.
Cancellation and refunds are separate requests
Stopping future renewal does not automatically reverse a charge that already posted. Refund eligibility depends on the platform and the circumstances. Google directs readers to its refund policy for refund requests; Apple and a directly billed service may have their own procedures. Submit a refund request separately if appropriate, and do not describe a cancellation as a guaranteed refund.
Keep proof
Save the confirmation email, a screenshot of the canceled status, and the displayed end date. Keep the statement showing the last charge. These records let you demonstrate when you canceled if another renewal appears and give the merchant enough information to investigate.

There is no Cancel button on iPhone
Apple says that no Cancel button or a red expiration message means the subscription is already canceled. Check the expiration date, save the screen, and compare it with the next expected billing date. If a new charge appears after that date, search for another Apple Account, a family member’s account, or a biller outside Apple.

The Google Play list is empty
Switch Google Accounts and repeat the search. Then check purchase receipts, family accounts, and Google Wallet. If the statement identifies a developer or another provider rather than Google Play, use that provider’s billing portal. An empty list under one account does not rule out an active subscription under another account or billing route.

The app still works after cancellation
Continued access is expected when paid time remains. Check the end date shown in the canceled subscription entry. The app can remain installed and usable until that date without creating a new renewal.
You canceled but see another charge
Compare the charge date with the cancellation confirmation and end date. Then check for duplicate subscriptions under another account, a family member’s account, or a direct-billing arrangement. If the charge belongs to the same merchant and occurred after the confirmed end date, contact the biller with your saved proof.
You cannot access the old account
Start with the receipt or statement to identify the account. Use the platform’s account-recovery process or contact the merchant’s support team. Explain that you need to stop recurring billing and provide the transaction date and amount; do not create a new subscription while trying to locate the old one.
A practical audit for forgotten subscriptions
Run this check whenever you want to clean up recurring charges:
- Review recent bank and card statements for recurring merchants.
- Search all likely email accounts for Apple, Google, and service receipts.
- Inspect every Apple Account’s Subscriptions list.
- Inspect every Google Account’s Google Play subscriptions and Google Wallet activity.
- Ask family members whether they control a shared subscription.
- For each missing store entry, contact the merchant named on the statement.
- Cancel through the identified billing platform, then verify the end date.
- Save the confirmation screen or email in a folder with the transaction record.
This process distinguishes an app that is merely installed from a subscription that can still renew. It also leaves you with a record of which account and company handled each charge.
Choosing the right next step

Bottom line for a forgotten charge
Find the merchant first, then cancel in the account that processed the payment. Apple-billed subscriptions are managed from the Apple Account’s Subscriptions list; Google Play subscriptions are managed from Google Play; direct or alternative billing must be handled by the service or provider. Check the canceled status and end date, keep proof, and remember that removing an app is never a substitute for canceling its recurring payment.
