Start with official directories, then verify every programme directly with the centre. Startup India’s incubator-schemes directory, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) information on Atal Incubation Centres (AICs), and the Department of Science and Technology’s NIDHI listings are useful discovery points. They are not proof that a cohort is open, that a listed centre still accepts applications, or that its terms suit your startup. Shortlist programmes by stage, sector, location, support and written commercial terms before preparing a tailored application.
What an incubator or accelerator does
An incubator generally helps a venture build or develop its business. Depending on the centre, support can include workspace, laboratories or prototyping resources, mentors, sector expertise, business planning, training, partnerships, pilot opportunities and access to capital. AIM’s description of AIC functions includes these support categories, but an individual centre may offer only some of them.
An accelerator is usually more time-bound and intensive. The distinction is useful, not absolute: programmes use the words differently and their eligibility rules matter more than the label.

Incubation for building the venture
Incubation is commonly suitable when you are still developing a product, validating a customer problem, building a prototype or establishing repeatable operations. A centre may provide facilities, testing or prototyping help, regular mentoring and introductions to customers, partners or investors. Some incubators are tied to universities, research institutions, state programmes or specific industries; others are sector-agnostic.

Acceleration for validated startups ready to scale
DST’s NIDHI Accelerator is explicitly described as post-incubation support. Its official page describes a typically three-to-six-month, fast-track programme for startups with substantial market validation that are considered ready to scale. It includes rigorous mentoring and networking and an investor-facing demo day. NIDHI also describes both sector-specific and sector-agnostic cohorts.
Do not assume that every accelerator requires revenue or that every incubator accepts idea-stage founders. Read the current cohort criteria and ask the centre how it defines “validated,” “early stage,” “scale-ready” or equivalent terms.
Where to find programmes in India
Use directories to build a candidate list, not to make an application decision. Programme calls, centre portfolios and deadlines change, and a listing may remain online after an intake closes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Search Startup India’s incubator-schemes directory
Startup India maintains a central and state scheme directory covering multiple support routes and state policy information. Filter for schemes relevant to your state, sector and stage, then open the linked programme or centre page. Record the name of the operating organisation, application URL, eligibility, intake dates and contact details. A directory entry alone does not establish that applications are open.
2. Use AIM’s AIC and established-centre information
AIM publishes information about Atal Incubation Centres and established incubation centres, including eligible centre types and the support an AIC is expected to provide. Follow the selected-centre information to identify potential locations or sector specialists. Check each centre’s own current page for its cohort, admission route, facilities, mentor network, location requirements and participation schedule.
3. Check DST and NIDHI programme-wise listings
DST/NIDHI publishes programme-wise incubator information and a NIDHI Accelerator page. These listings can help you locate technology business incubators and accelerator operators. Confirm whether the organisation is accepting startup applications or whether a listed call is for the incubator to apply as a programme operator.
4. Treat the SISFS portfolio as a lead list
The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) portal lists incubators approved under the scheme, but it cautions that the portfolio may not be current and that some listed incubators may not accept further applications. The portal displayed a final extended startup-application deadline of 31 May 2026; that date had passed by 13 October 2026. Do not describe SISFS as open without a newer official notice. Contact the relevant incubator to verify present availability and eligibility.

5. Add state, university and sector searches
State directories and policies can reveal centres that are not the best match for a national search term. Search the official state startup portal, nearby universities, research parks and sector agencies for terms such as “incubation programme,” “technology business incubator,” “prototype lab,” or “accelerator cohort.” Use the same verification process for every result: current intake, written terms, stage, sector, location and application instructions.
Build a shortlist before you apply
Start with five to ten plausible programmes and reduce the list using the same questions for each one. The goal is not to find the most famous centre; it is to find a programme whose capabilities and obligations match the next milestone your startup must reach.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Stage and traction | Does it accept an idea, prototype, pilot, revenue-generating or already-validated startup? What evidence is expected? |
| Sector and geography | Is it sector-specific or sector-agnostic? Is a city, state, university affiliation or in-person presence required? |
| Application and selection | Is intake open? What form, documents, interview, pitch or technical review is required? When should you expect a decision? |
| Support | Which mentors, facilities, testbeds, pilot partners, business services, networks and investor introductions are actually available? |
| Funding and economics | Is support a grant, debt, investment, convertible instrument, award or no cash? Are there fees, equity, intellectual-property terms or other costs? |
| Delivery | What is the duration, weekly time commitment, cohort format, location and reporting requirement? |
Check stage fit honestly
Map your current evidence to the centre’s language. An idea with interviews is not the same as a tested prototype; a pilot is not necessarily repeatable revenue; revenue in one customer segment may not demonstrate readiness for rapid scale. If a programme expects market validation, explain what was tested, with whom, over what period and what changed as a result.
Check sector and facility fit
AIM describes centre functions such as sector expertise, mentor networks, prototyping and testbeds, market access and pilot implementation. For a hardware, deep-tech, health, agriculture or climate venture, ask for the exact equipment, lab access rules, safety approvals, technician support and scheduling process. For software or services, ask which customer, distribution or regulatory networks are genuinely active.
Recommended Free Tools
Check location and participation obligations
Clarify whether you must relocate, attend in person, keep a team member on site, use a particular laboratory or participate in fixed workshops. A programme can be a poor fit if its most valuable resources are unavailable remotely or if the required schedule conflicts with customer delivery.
Read the terms before treating an offer as funding
Indian incubators do not operate under one standard contract. Never infer that a programme is free, takes equity or guarantees capital simply because another centre does so.
Questions about money
- Is the amount a grant, investment, loan, prize, reimbursement or programme-operator budget?
- When is money disbursed, and what milestones, invoices or reporting unlock each payment?
- Are there application, membership, laboratory, accommodation or event fees?
- Does the centre request equity, a convertible instrument, warrants, revenue share or any other economic right?
- Who pays taxes, travel and equipment costs?
Ask for the current written offer, agreement and fee schedule. Oral assurances from a mentor or social-media post are not a substitute for the document you will sign.

Questions about intellectual property and confidentiality
- Who owns inventions, code, data, designs and improvements created during the programme?
- Can the centre or its partners use your name, logo, pitch deck, photographs or metrics publicly?
- Which mentors, investors or corporate partners can see confidential information?
- What happens to your data and prototypes after the programme ends?
Questions about time and continuing obligations
- How many workshops, mentor meetings, reviews and demo days are compulsory?
- What progress reports, financial statements or outcome data are required?
- Can you leave early, and are there repayment or other consequences?
- Are post-programme advisory, reporting or equity obligations continuing?
A scheme-specific SISFS safeguard
The SISFS FAQ states that an incubator or its staff must not charge an applicant or beneficiary in cash or kind for selection, disbursement, incubation or monitoring under that scheme. This protection is specific to SISFS. Do not apply it automatically to unrelated incubators or accelerators; ask each programme for its own written fee and conflict-of-interest policy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Decide whether you are ready for an accelerator
Use a readiness review rather than a vanity metric. You may be ready when you can show a repeatable customer problem, a product or service that users can evaluate, evidence from pilots or usage, a team able to execute quickly and a clear scaling bottleneck that the programme can help remove.
Signals that support an application
- Customer interviews have produced a specific problem statement and a defined buyer or user.
- A prototype, service workflow or minimum viable product has been tested with real users.
- You can report relevant validation: active users, pilots, retention, revenue, signed commitments, technical performance or another meaningful measure.
- The founders’ roles, technical capability and operating capacity are clear.
- You know the next 90-to-180-day milestones and why external mentoring, facilities, pilots or capital would accelerate them.
When incubation may be a better fit
If the product is still being built, the customer is not defined, regulatory or technical feasibility is untested, or the team needs foundational business planning, an incubator may provide more useful support than a short scale-up cohort. Applying to an accelerator too early can produce generic advice and pressure to present traction you do not yet have.
Prepare an application that demonstrates programme fit
Official programme pages do not establish a universal application checklist. The following structure is practical guidance inferred from the capabilities and eligibility criteria described by AIM and NIDHI; always follow the specific form and document list.
1. State the customer problem
Identify the customer, the costly or urgent problem and the evidence that it matters. Separate the user from the economic buyer when they are different. Avoid broad claims such as “the market is huge” without explaining who will pay and why now.
2. Explain the product and current stage
Describe what the customer receives, how it works at a useful level and what remains unbuilt. State whether you have an idea, prototype, pilot, paying customer, recurring revenue or another stage marker. Include a short product demonstration or technical note only if the form permits it.
3. Show validation or traction with context
Give dates, customer counts, pilot duration, revenue period, conversion or retention definitions and the segment measured. A single number without its denominator or time period is difficult to assess. If a test failed, explain the learning and the change you made.

4. Present the team’s ability to execute
Assign responsibilities and show relevant technical, domain, sales or operating experience. Explain gaps that the programme’s mentors, facilities or partners can help close. Do not list credentials without connecting them to the product and market.
5. Describe the business model and market
Explain who pays, the pricing logic, sales channel, purchasing cycle and major cost drivers. Give a realistic initial market and expansion path. If regulation, procurement or manufacturing controls timing, include the dependency rather than promising an immediate scale-up.
6. Make the “why this programme” section specific
Name the particular facility, sector mentor, pilot network, testing capability, market-access route or investor preparation that matters to your next milestone. “We need mentoring and funding” is weaker than a concrete request tied to a measurable outcome.
7. Set programme-period milestones
Propose a small number of outcomes, such as completing a validation study, securing a defined pilot, achieving a product-performance target, preparing for regulatory submission or reaching a specified revenue quality. Explain what you will do and what support you need for each milestone.
Submit and handle selection professionally
- Confirm the live call. Check the centre’s own application page, publication date, deadline, eligible entity type and contact address. If the page is silent, email the centre before investing time in a long application.
- Follow the requested format. Use the prescribed form, file types, word limits and naming convention. Provide a concise deck only when allowed; do not substitute a generic pitch deck for required answers.
- Keep evidence ready. Prepare incorporation details, founder identification, cap table, financial information, customer or pilot evidence, technical documentation and regulatory status if requested.
- Prepare for an interview or pitch. Rehearse a short explanation of the problem, product, evidence, business model, team, programme fit and next milestone. Expect questions about risks and assumptions.
- Ask questions before accepting. Request the agreement, fee schedule, equity or investment terms, IP provisions, attendance rules, reporting duties and disbursement conditions in writing.
- Track the process. Save the submitted version, date, contact person and promised decision timeline. Follow up politely after that timeline, not repeatedly during the review window.
Understand the figures that are often misread
AIC establishment support is not startup-cohort funding
AIM’s AIC material describes up to ₹10 crore over a maximum of five years for eligible academic and non-academic applicants establishing an incubation centre, along with at least 10,000 square feet of ready-to-use built-up space. This is an institutional route for creating an AIC, not money a startup receives by joining an existing incubator.
The AIM AIC page was marked last updated on 3 January 2024, and the relevant guidelines are dated November 2023. Confirm the current call, guidelines and application window before relying on those figures.
Startup India’s 2026 schemes playbook figures
A June 2026 Startup India government-schemes playbook states up to ₹5 crore where no lab facilities are established and up to ₹10 crore where sector-specific lab facilities are established. It also states that government applicants have no matching contribution, while non-government matching grants-in-aid range from 25% to 100% depending on applicant type. These figures describe scheme support and applicant categories; they are not a standard benefit for a startup joining a cohort. Confirm the current scheme guidelines.

NIDHI Accelerator’s operator contribution
The NIDHI Accelerator page describes a maximum contribution of ₹40 lakh per programme cohort: up to ₹30 lakh for the accelerator programme and up to ₹10 lakh for demo-day awards. The applicant is the incubator or technology business incubator operating the programme. This is not a promise that each participating startup receives ₹40 lakh.
The same page lists eligibility for an operating TBI, including at least 20 startups incubated and a minimum of three years in existence. Those criteria apply to the incubator applicant, not to a founder applying for a cohort seat.
Separate route: applying to establish an AIC
Most founders reading this guide want admission to an existing programme. An institution seeking to create an Atal Incubation Centre faces a different application.

AIM describes eligible academic and non-academic applicants and support for establishing world-class incubation centres in subjects or sectors such as manufacturing, transport, energy, health, education, agriculture, water and sanitation. The official November 2023 guidelines state: “The objective of the scheme is to promote and establish world-class incubation centres in specific subjects/sectors such as manufacturing, transport, energy, health, education, agriculture, water and sanitation etc. in India.”
Core preparation points
- Demonstrate the proposed sector, regional need and operating model.
- Document the required ready-to-use built-up space; the AIM description specifies at least 10,000 square feet.
- Show governance, staffing, mentor and partner networks, facilities and a plan to support startups.
- Budget capital and operating expenditure over the proposed period and understand reporting obligations.
- Use the current AIM call and guidelines, because the published page and 2023 guidelines may not reflect a later intake.
Avoid stale listings and application scams
- Verify that the application domain and email address belong to the centre or government programme named in the official listing.
- Ask whether a fee is legitimate, who receives it and what document authorises it.
- Do not pay an intermediary promising selection, guaranteed funding or an inside contact.
- Confirm whether a funding figure is for the centre, a cohort, an award pool or an individual startup.
- Check whether the intake is current, postponed, closed or limited to referrals.
- Keep copies of all agreements and receipts.
Where a directory conflicts with the centre’s current page, treat the centre’s written clarification and the latest official scheme notice as the deciding evidence. If neither is clear, do not assume the programme is available.
A practical decision checklist
- My current stage matches the stated eligibility.
- The centre has relevant sector knowledge, facilities or market access for my next milestone.
- The location and time commitment are workable for my team.
- I have verified the current intake and submission route directly.
- I understand whether support is cash, services, investment, debt, awards or none.
- I have reviewed fees, equity, IP, confidentiality, attendance and reporting terms.
- My application explains customer evidence, team capability, business model and specific programme fit.
- I can measure the outcomes I want from the programme period.
What to do after acceptance
Before signing, compare the final agreement with the terms presented during selection. Identify every deliverable, meeting, report, payment condition and ownership clause. Nominate one founder to manage the programme relationship and maintain a milestone tracker. Use mentors for decisions connected to their expertise, test introductions quickly, and document what you learn from pilots or customer conversations. If the programme cannot provide a promised facility or introduction, raise the issue early and ask for a written alternative.
For future applications, keep a factual record of milestones, customer references, product changes and programme outcomes. It will make later accelerator, grant or investment applications more precise without forcing you to reuse a generic story.
