For a quick check, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and find the app. For a broader inventory or a filtered search, run winget list in Command Prompt or PowerShell. If neither shows the detail you need, check the app’s own About page. These methods report different kinds of information, and no single one is documented to show an exact version for every app.
Check Installed apps in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app in the list. Windows also lets you look for apps from Start.
- Check the listing for version information, if it is shown.
Microsoft’s instructions describe how to find installed apps, but do not guarantee that every listing includes a version. If the version is missing, try another method rather than assuming the app is not installed. Microsoft Support: How to check if an app or program is installed in Windows.
List installed apps with WinGet
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:
winget listWinGet’s list command inventories apps installed through Windows Package Manager and apps installed by other means. Depending on the app’s available metadata, the results can include installed versions and available upgrades. Microsoft Learn: list command (winget).

Filter the list
To narrow the output, search by app name or package ID:

winget list --name "App Name"
winget list --id Publisher.PackageReplace the example name or ID with the app’s name or WinGet package ID. Add --details when you want detail-style output. The available filters and output depend on what WinGet can match in its records.
Interpret missing versions carefully
WinGet may not be able to determine an installed package’s current version. Microsoft documents --unknown to include packages whose current version cannot be determined:

Read the version from the app’s About page
For a single desktop app, open it and look for an About page. Common places include Help > About or Settings > About, but menu names and locations vary by app. This is useful when Windows’ inventory does not provide the detail you need because it shows the version the app itself reports.

Windows’ own app-version metadata can come from an AppXManifest for MSIX packages or uninstall registry data for other formats. winget show --id Publisher.PackageThe output includes a Version field when that information was submitted for the catalog package. It describes catalog metadata, not necessarily the version installed on your PC, so do not treat it as confirmation of local installation state. Missing fields may simply not have been included in the submitted metadata. Microsoft Learn: show command (winget).
