To find affordable after-school care, start with your child’s school, then check local government recreation programs and several provider directories. There is no single directory that lists every local club, and no national price or financial-aid guarantee: confirm fees, eligibility, schedule, transportation, and open spaces directly with each provider.
Where to search for after-school programs near you
Ask your child’s school first
Contact the school office and ask whether it runs an after-school program, hosts a partner provider, or offers clubs or a late bus. Find out which grades can enroll, how pickup works, whether the program has current openings, and how it fits the school dismissal time. A program on school grounds may avoid a separate transportation leg, but eligibility and capacity still need to be confirmed. Use your state or territory’s childcare search
For U.S. families, choose your state or territory through Childcare.gov’s childcare search and follow its link to local search resources. Look for school-age care and check the relevant licensing or oversight information. A listing is a lead, not confirmation that the provider is open, has space, or suits your child.

Search your city or county parks and recreation department for after-school programs at recreation centers, as well as sports, arts, and other classes. These options may be listed separately from childcare providers, so search both the department site and nearby community centers.

Search YMCA and Boys & Girls Club locations
- The YMCA of the USA locator accepts a ZIP code, city, or state. Use its “Before School, After School, and Early Learning” filter to locate nearby associations; schedules, fees, and assistance are set locally.
- Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s parent page offers a ZIP-based “Find a Club” tool and describes programs as free to low-cost. Ask the local Club about membership rules, fees, age range, schedule, and current openings rather than assuming those details are the same everywhere.
Use maps and local directories as additional leads
Youth.gov’s Map My Community lets you search by keyword and U.S. address or ZIP, set a radius, and view results on a map and in a table. It identifies organizations associated with federally funded youth or family programs; it is not a complete directory of local activities. Search provider and local-government listings as well.
Some cities maintain their own program directories. For example, New York City’s Department of Youth and Community Development directs families to discoverDYCD to find and apply for programs, while warning that not all are accepting applications. In other cities, look for the equivalent local youth or community agency.

If you live in England or Wales
Use the postcode finder on GOV.UK’s “Find before and after school and holiday clubs” page. GOV.UK says: “Search for before and after school clubs and holiday play schemes in your area. They can be run by a school, or a private or voluntary organisation.” The finder is for England and Wales only; it is not a UK-wide or U.S. directory.
How to compare the real cost
Ask each provider for the total price for the days and hours your family actually needs. A headline weekly or monthly rate may not include other charges. Request a written fee breakdown and ask:

- What do registration or membership cost, and which days or hours does tuition cover?
- Are school-closure days, holiday care, transportation, supplies, or late pickup charged separately?
- When are payments due, and what happens if a child is absent or the family needs to change days?
- Does the provider accept a childcare subsidy or other third-party funding?
- Are sliding-scale tuition, scholarships, or financial assistance available? What eligibility rules, documents, and deadlines apply?
- Can different forms of assistance be combined, and what balance would the family still owe?
Assistance varies by provider and location. For example, YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas describes tuition support and its local Y For All assistance program. YMCA Youth Development Miami says eligible grant-funded programs may be free or reduced-rate and that third-party funding or assistance may be available for eligible fee-based programs. These local examples are not a promise of the same aid elsewhere; confirm availability and eligibility with the provider.

- Availability: open spaces, waitlist process, documents needed, and application deadline.
Check availability directly even if a directory shows a program. NYC DYCD notes that some programs are not accepting applications, and YMCA Youth Development Miami says registration for its example program begins on a waitlist pending review. Those details illustrate why a listing should not be treated as proof of an opening.

Check safety, oversight, and quality—not just price
Ask about staff qualifications, supervision, safety practices, how concerns are handled, and what children do during the program. Childcare.gov’s “Look, Listen, and Ask” selection guide offers a starting point for questions about care and quality.

Confirm how the provider is overseen under local rules. Childcare.gov notes that school-age programs may be licensed or legally exempt; some may be overseen by another public agency or associated with a faith-based organization. A directory entry or accreditation alone cannot establish whether a program is safe or a good fit for your family, so ask about the specific provider and review the applicable local requirements.

- What financial assistance or funding does this specific location accept, and what are the requirements?
- How does my child get from school to the program, and who can pick them up?
- What oversight applies, how are staff trained, and how can families raise a concern?
- What activities are offered, and how are inclusion or disability-related needs handled?
