If the Windows 11 God Mode (All Tasks) list is too long or cryptic, stop browsing it and use the Settings app. Open Settings, select the Find a setting box, and type the setting name or a plain-language description of what you want to do. Choose the matching result. If you cannot identify the result, browse the relevant Settings category instead. For a page you open repeatedly, use its documented ms-settings: URI; if you already use PowerToys, its Windows Settings search plugin is another optional route.
Why God Mode is often the wrong starting point
“God Mode” is a convenient name for an All Tasks view that exposes many Windows controls in one folder. That concentration is also its weakness: the list can be long, labels may sound technical, and entries do not necessarily reflect the way the current Windows 11 Settings app groups the same control. The inventory can also change as Windows evolves. There is no authoritative promise that every item in an All Tasks folder is a current, one-to-one destination for a modern Settings page.
Use God Mode as a fallback list when you already know the exact legacy control you need. For ordinary Windows 11 navigation, the Settings app gives you three clearer choices: search for a setting, browse the category that owns it, or open a documented page URI. Those routes let you work from the task you are trying to complete instead of guessing which cryptic All Tasks label is equivalent.
The fastest method: search in Settings
Microsoft documents Settings search as the normal way to locate a specific control. It accepts a setting label when you know it and a descriptive keyword when you do not.

- Open the Settings app from the Start menu.
- Click the Find a setting search box. If Settings is already open, press Ctrl+E to place focus in that box.
- Type the name of the setting, or describe the task in a few words.
- Review the results and select the entry whose title and preview text match your goal.
- Make the change on the destination page. If several results look plausible, open the relevant Settings category and compare the surrounding controls before changing anything.
Search is useful because it avoids translating a modern task into an All Tasks label. For example, a person trying to adjust screen-related controls can start with display; someone looking for alert behavior can try notifications. These are the kinds of keywords Microsoft uses in its own Settings-search examples. A result is not a command to change a setting, so read the page heading and nearby options before applying a change.
When you know the exact label
Use the wording shown in Windows whenever possible. Start with the shortest distinctive part of the label rather than typing a whole sentence. A concise query produces fewer unrelated results and makes it easier to recognize the intended page. If the label contains a noun and an action, try both portions separately when the first search is inconclusive.
When you know the task but not the label
Describe the outcome in everyday language: what you want to see, turn on, turn off, connect, or change. Try a second synonym if the first phrase produces no useful result. Search is a locator, not a natural-language guarantee; a phrase that seems obvious to you may not match the text used by your Windows build.

How to judge a result
- Prefer a result whose title names the feature you intend to change.
- Check the destination page heading after you open it.
- Look for the control in the page context; a similarly named option in another category may affect a different feature.
- If you would need to change a value with security, privacy, network, or account consequences, pause and confirm the page before saving.
Use category browsing when search is ambiguous
Settings search and category navigation are complementary. If a query returns several similarly named pages, select the category that best describes the task and inspect its grouped controls. Microsoft recommends category browsing as the second route when search does not make the right choice obvious.

- Open Settings and look at the category list in the navigation pane.
- Choose the category related to the hardware, feature, account, or system behavior you want to change.
- Read the category’s page headings and open the subsection that matches your task.
- Use the page’s own controls and back navigation to compare nearby options without returning to God Mode.
Category names and layouts can differ between Windows 11 releases, so rely on the labels visible on your device rather than a remembered screenshot. If a category contains several pages with similar words, return to the search box and add one more distinctive term from the page or feature name.
Keyboard-first navigation with Ctrl+E
Microsoft Support states: “To search for a specific setting, press Ctrl+E.” The shortcut works while the Settings app is open and saves the trip to the search box with a mouse or touchpad.
- Open Settings.
- Press Ctrl+E.
- Type a setting label or descriptive keyword.
- Use the arrow keys to move through the results if needed, then press Enter on the selected result.
If Ctrl+E appears to do nothing, first click inside the Settings window and try again. A different application may have focus, or a text field elsewhere may be active. You can always click Find a setting directly as a fallback.

When you know the exact destination page, a Windows Settings URI can open it without searching or browsing. Microsoft maintains a catalog of page-specific ms-settings: URI schemes. Copy the URI for the page you need from that catalog rather than guessing the page name.

- Identify the precise Settings page you want to open.
- Find that page in Microsoft’s current
ms-settings:URI list. - Copy the complete URI exactly as documented.
- Paste it into a Windows launch surface that accepts a URI, then run it.
- Confirm that the opened page is the intended destination before changing a value.
URI support is page-specific. Microsoft notes that some entries are removed, conditional, or available only when the device supports the associated hardware or feature. A URI that worked on another computer, or on an earlier Windows release, may therefore open an error, redirect, or different page. Treat the catalog entry—not a remembered shortcut—as the authority.
When a URI is the better choice
- You administer several PCs and need a repeatable link to one page.
- You are writing an internal help document and want a direct destination instead of a sequence of clicks.
- You know the page name exactly and do not want search results to introduce ambiguity.
When not to use a URI
- You are unsure which page owns the setting.
- The catalog marks the page as removed or conditional.
- You are troubleshooting a feature whose hardware support differs between machines.
PowerToys Run: an optional alternative
If Microsoft PowerToys is already installed, PowerToys Run includes a Windows Settings search plugin. It provides another way to search for Settings pages from the PowerToys Run launcher. This is an optional utility, not a prerequisite for finding a setting.
Use the built-in Settings search first when you want the fewest dependencies. Choose the PowerToys route when it already fits your keyboard workflow or when you routinely launch applications and Settings pages from one launcher. If the plugin is unavailable or disabled in your installation, return to Settings search rather than treating the utility as a requirement.

Troubleshoot a search that does not help
The search returns no useful result
Shorten the query to the feature’s core noun, then try a plain-language synonym. For example, if a long phrase fails, reduce it to a term such as display or notifications. If neither wording works, browse categories and look for the control under the feature area rather than continuing to add words.

Several results look correct
Open the result that most closely matches the action you intend, then verify the page heading and nearby controls. If two pages still appear plausible, use category context: the page grouped with the relevant hardware, account, or system feature is usually the better starting point. Do not change values on both pages merely to see which one has an effect.
The result opens a page but the control is missing
Read the page for a hardware, edition, permission, or feature prerequisite. Some Settings pages expose controls only when the device supports the associated capability. If you were following a saved URI, check Microsoft’s current URI catalog because entries can be removed or conditional.
Ctrl+E does not focus search
Make sure the Settings window has focus, then press Ctrl+E again. If another application owns focus, the keystroke may be handled there. Clicking Find a setting is the direct fallback and does not require the shortcut.

Do not modify the URI by guesswork. Reopen Microsoft’s current list, locate the destination page, and copy the documented entry. If the page is marked unavailable for your device, use Settings search or category browsing instead.

Practical examples of the workflow
You know the feature name
Open Settings, press Ctrl+E, and enter the feature label. Select the result whose title matches the feature, then confirm the page heading. This is faster and less error-prone than scanning every All Tasks entry for a similar phrase.
You know the outcome, not the label
Describe the outcome in a few words, such as wanting to adjust display behavior or notification behavior. Start with the shortest distinctive keyword. If the results are broad, add one term that identifies the device or feature, then inspect the category context before making a change.
You need to document the destination for other users
Find the page through Settings search first so you know exactly which destination you mean. Then consult Microsoft’s URI catalog and record the documented URI alongside a plain-language description. Include a note that URI availability can depend on Windows version and device support; do not assume a link is universal merely because it works on one PC.
Do not assume Copilot+ semantic search is universal
A January 17, 2025 Windows Insider Blog post described natural-language searching across areas including Settings on Copilot+ PCs. That was a preview-era statement tied to Copilot+ hardware, not a guarantee that every Windows 11 installation has the same semantic-search behavior. For a dependable procedure, use the documented Settings search box, Ctrl+E, category navigation, or a verified page URI. If your device offers an enhanced search experience, treat it as an additional convenience rather than a requirement.
