The fastest way to find a particular Pokémon card is to use the official Pokémon Trading Card Game Card Database. Enter the Pokémon’s name or a distinctive word from its card text, then narrow the results with advanced filters such as expansion, rarity, card type, HP, attack cost, weakness, resistance, tournament format, or illustrator. To identify one exact printing, verify the expansion icon, collector number, and rarity shown on the card.
If you need repeatable searches in software, the documented endpoint is https://api.pokemontcg.io/v2/cards. Its q parameter supports exact, phrase, wildcard, nested-field, legality, and numeric-range queries. That API is now deprecated: new account registrations are unavailable, existing keys are documented to continue through March 1, 2027, and the documentation advises planning a migration to Scrydex.
Start with the official web database
Pokémon Support describes the Pokémon Trading Card Game Card Database as “a powerful tool for finding cards” (support information updated May 26, 2026). It is the best first stop when you are looking at a card, remember only part of its name, or want to discover cards that share a mechanic.

- Go to https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-tcg/pokemon-cards/.
- Use the main search field to enter the card name, a distinctive keyword, or wording you expect to appear in the card description.
- Submit the search and inspect the returned cards. If the list is too broad, open the advanced-search controls rather than adding a long string of uncertain words.
2. Search the right text area
The interface can target specific card text, including attack descriptions and special rules. This is useful when you remember what an attack does but not the Pokémon’s name. A memorable phrase from an attack or rule is generally more useful than a generic word such as “energy” or “damage,” which may occur on many cards.

Search by the Pokémon name when you know it. If you know only part of a name, try a distinctive fragment, then use expansion, rarity, or other filters to reduce the results. Keep the first query simple; adding several uncertain words can exclude the card you want.
3. Add advanced filters
Advanced search lets you combine several attributes. The available criteria documented for the database are:

| HP | Filters Pokémon by a remembered hit-point value or range supported by the interface. |
| Retreat cost | Useful when the card’s retreat requirement is known. |
| Total attack cost | Finds attacks requiring a particular total amount of energy. |
| Attack-cost energy type | Separates attacks by the type of energy symbols in their costs. |
| Weakness | Limits results by the weakness printed on the card. |
| Resistance | Limits results by the resistance printed on the card. |
| Card illustrator | Helpful when the artist credit is visible or remembered. |
Apply the most reliable filters first. For example, an expansion plus a card type is usually safer than guessing an exact HP value from a blurry photograph. You can add more criteria after seeing how many results remain.
Identify the exact printing, not just the Pokémon
A search result can identify the Pokémon while still leaving several different printings. Reprints, alternate treatments, and cards from different expansions may share a name and similar artwork. Use the physical card’s set and collector information to confirm the match.
Read the expansion icon
The expansion icon identifies the set. Compare the icon on the card with the expansion shown in the database result. If the set is wrong, you may have found a card with the same Pokémon name but not the same printing.
Check the collector number
The card number printed within the set is a decisive verification field. Match the number exactly, including any numbering format visible on the card. The number distinguishes cards within an expansion that have similar names or artwork.

Use rarity as a supporting check
Rarity helps distinguish printings, but it should be used with the expansion and collector number rather than alone. Confirm all three when cataloguing a physical card: expansion icon, collector number, and rarity.

Verify other visible details
When available, compare the illustrator credit and the card’s attack or rule text. These details can resolve a final ambiguity after the set and number have narrowed the candidates. The database’s illustrator filter is especially useful when the artist credit is legible.
What the web search cannot find
Not every piece of information printed on a card is indexed as a search field. Nonessential gameplay text such as a Pokédex number, height, or weight is not searchable in the documented database workflow. If those are the only details you remember, first identify the Pokémon through its name, attack wording, set, or another supported field, then inspect the matching card.
A failed search does not necessarily mean the card is absent. It may mean that the term belongs to a non-searchable descriptive field, that the remembered wording differs from the printed wording, or that a filter is excluding the card. Remove uncertain filters and retry with a name fragment or distinctive attack text.
A repeatable web-search procedure
Use this sequence when you are working from a photograph, a partial transcription, or a large collection:
- Transcribe reliable clues. Write down the visible Pokémon name, attack name or phrase, set symbol, collector number, rarity, illustrator, HP, and any weakness or resistance. Mark uncertain characters instead of silently guessing them.
- Run a name or text search. Start at the official database and enter the clearest name fragment or attack wording. If the card is a Trainer or another non-Pokémon card, use a distinctive phrase from its effect text.
- Choose the relevant text target. When the interface offers a text-area choice, direct the search to attack descriptions or special rules if that is where your remembered phrase appears.
- Apply one or two strong filters. Select the expansion, card type, rarity, or energy type that you can verify from the physical card.
- Compare the candidate image and metadata. Check artwork, name, HP, attacks, illustrator, expansion icon, and collector number.
- Record the complete identity. Save the card name together with its expansion, number, rarity, and any other distinguishing information needed for your collection record.
Search the card database from code
For scripts, collection tools, or a cataloguing workflow, the documented cards endpoint is https://api.pokemontcg.io/v2/cards. Searches are sent with the q parameter, which accepts Lucene-like query syntax.

Combine clauses when one field is not distinctive enough. For example, a name keyword can be paired with a set identifier or a legality condition. Preserve the field names and punctuation exactly; set.id, attacks.name, and legalities.standard refer to nested data fields, not ordinary words in the card description.
Control the response
The endpoint supports page, pageSize, orderBy, and select parameters. The documented maximum for pageSize is 250. Use pagination when a query returns more records than one response can contain. Use orderBy when stable ordering matters to your application, and use select when you need only a subset of fields.
A practical first request can ask for identifying fields only, then retrieve the full record for the selected result. This reduces the amount of data your script must process and makes it easier to display a concise candidate list.
Verify one record by ID
After you identify a candidate ID, request the individual record at /v2/cards/<id>. The single-card response is the final verification step for the record’s name, set, number, rarity, artist, legalities, images, and any marketplace URL field exposed by the API. Use the ID rather than assuming that the first search result is the correct printing.
Example request construction
The following examples show the query values; your HTTP client should URL-encode the complete query string when constructing a request:

Understand the API’s current status before building on it
The Pokémon TCG API documentation currently labels the API as deprecated. New account registrations are unavailable, while existing keys are documented to continue through March 1, 2027. The documentation advises migration to Scrydex.

A short-lived personal script may still use an existing key while the service remains available. A collection manager, public website, or company integration should isolate its API client behind a small service layer, record the source ID for every imported card, and plan a migration rather than embedding the legacy endpoint throughout the application.
Migration precautions
- Store the card’s source ID, name, set identifier, collector number, rarity, artist, legalities, and image references so records can be reconciled with another catalogue.
- Keep the original query alongside the selected ID. This makes it possible to explain why a record was imported and to rerun the search during migration.
- Handle missing, changed, or differently named fields instead of assuming that the replacement service has an identical schema.
- Test exact-printing matches with cards that share a name across expansions; set and number are more dependable than name alone.
- Confirm the replacement service’s availability, authentication, limits, and licensing terms before switching production traffic.

Choose the web database when you are identifying a handful of cards or need visual confirmation. Choose an API workflow when you must search or reconcile many records, but treat the documented API as a legacy dependency rather than a new long-term foundation.

No results for a remembered Pokédex detail
Pokédex number, height, and weight are not searchable fields in the documented web workflow. Search the Pokémon’s name or an attack phrase instead, then inspect those descriptive details on the result.
Too many results for a Pokémon name
Add the expansion, rarity, card type, illustrator, HP, or attack-cost filters. If you know the set symbol or number, use those as verification clues after the initial search rather than guessing at unrelated text.
The attack phrase does not match
Try the attack name itself, a shorter distinctive phrase, or the special-rules text target. Remove punctuation and uncertain words from your mental transcription, and remember that a generic word can occur on many cards.

The API returns the wrong printing
Do not stop at a name match. Add set.id, inspect the returned number and rarity, and then fetch the individual record by ID. Compare the response with the physical card’s expansion icon and collector number.
A script cannot create a new API account
That behavior is consistent with the current deprecation notice: new registrations are unavailable. Check whether an existing key remains valid and design a migration path to Scrydex instead of assuming that a new legacy account can be created.
A result appears legal in one context but not another
Use the relevant legality field and tournament-format filter rather than inferring legality from the card’s age or expansion. The API example legalities.standard:banned demonstrates a field-specific legality query; verify the exact field and value needed for your application.

Record cards after you identify them
A binder or collection album is optional organizational equipment, not part of the search process. Once a card is identified, record enough information to distinguish it from reprints:
- Card name.
- Expansion or set and its icon.
- Collector number.
- Rarity.
- Illustrator, when useful.
- Database or API ID, if your workflow uses one.
- Legality information, when the record is used for deck or tournament planning.
Marketplace links may be useful after identification, but a link field in an API record is not proof of a current listing, price, availability, or affiliate relationship. Treat it as a reference to inspect separately.
