To find a saved Wi-Fi password, check a device that has already joined the network: Windows, iPhone or iPad, and Mac can reveal or copy it after the required steps; Android’s documented sharing method displays a QR code. If no device has the password, ask the person who manages the router or check its administrator app or webpage.

“Local area connection password” usually means the Wi-Fi network password, sometimes called the network security key. It is different from the router administrator password, which is used to manage router settings. These steps are for a network you own or are authorized to access.

Find the password on a Windows PC

Microsoft’s steps cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the menu labels differ by version. The current-network route is available in Settings; Windows 10 also has a documented Network and Sharing Center route.

  2. Select the Wi-Fi network.
  3. Tap Share and let the other device scan the displayed QR code.

If no connected device has the password

  • Ask the network owner or administrator. They can provide the current password or share access another way.
  • Check the router’s administrator page or app. If you administer the router and can sign in, you may be able to view or change the Wi-Fi password there. This requires router administration access; it is not the same credential as the Wi-Fi password.
  • Check the router label or documentation. These may show the default network name and password, but the information will not work if the password has since been changed.
  • Contact the person or internet service provider that configured the router, or the router manufacturer.
  • For public Wi-Fi, ask staff or check posted information. Some public networks also require a separate login after you join.

Apple outlines these options in its Wi-Fi password guidance.

When a saved password does not work

Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive, so check capitalization as well as any characters you may have mistyped. A device may also retain an old password after the network owner changes it. In that case, forget the saved network and join again using the current password, as Apple advises in its Wi-Fi password guidance.

Protect router access

A Wi-Fi password controls access to the network; a router administrator password controls router settings. If you manage the router, avoid leaving default administrator credentials in place. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when the router and PC support it; see Setting up a wireless network in Windows.
