Start with the RobotCombatEvents map or event directory. Scan for events within a realistic travel radius, open each listing, and verify its date, venue, weight classes, and registration status on the organizer’s own page before you travel or build a robot. “Sanctioned” does not identify one universal accreditation system for combat-robot events, so treat an event as verified when its organizer, venue, schedule, rules, competition classes, inspection requirements, and attendance or entry process are all clearly documented.

What “sanctioned” means in combat robotics

Combat-robot competitions do not operate under one universally recognized sanctioning authority or accreditation badge. Different leagues, promoters, clubs, and venues can run legitimate events under different rulesets. A directory listing alone is useful for discovery, but it is not the final authority for what you may enter or how the event will operate.

For practical purposes, call an event verified when you can identify all of the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The organizer responsible for the competition.
  • A specific venue and event date.
  • The weight classes and weapon or configuration restrictions.
  • The current rules and technical-inspection requirements.
  • A clear process for public attendance, competitor registration, selection, or a lottery.
  • A current organizer page where changes and cancellations would be announced.

The Robot Combat League’s official site directs newcomers to RobotCombatEvents for event discovery, RobotCombatWiki for introductory information, and SPARC.tools for rules and safety material. Those resources are useful starting points, but the individual event organizer’s current rules take precedence.

Where can I find competitions?

1. Search the RobotCombatEvents map first

Open the RobotCombatEvents map or event listings and set a travel radius you can actually manage. The directory covers events in multiple countries and typically shows the location, date, competition classes, and registration information. Start broad enough to see regional options, then narrow the list by distance, date, and class.

Do not treat a calendar snippet, search-result preview, or old social-media post as confirmation. Event dates, venues, classes, ticket availability, and entry status can change. Open the individual listing and check that the date is still upcoming, the venue is workable for you, and the class you want is actually offered.

2. Open the organizer’s official page

Use the directory listing to reach the organizer’s own event page. Read the current rules, entry instructions, schedule, venue information, and spectator policy there. If the directory and organizer page disagree, ask the organizer which information is current rather than guessing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Record the details before deciding

For each candidate, make a short comparison note containing:

  • Event name, organizer, city, venue, and date.
  • Classes offered and the maximum legal robot weight for each class.
  • Whether the event is open to spectators, competitors, or both.
  • Registration deadline, entry fee if stated, selection method, and waitlist status.
  • Ruleset version, inspection process, weapon-lock requirements, and battery or power rules.
  • Travel time, parking or public-transit information, and any age or liability requirements.

This record makes it easier to spot an attractive event that is not actually suitable for your experience, budget, robot, or schedule.

How to verify that a listing is current

Check the date and venue

Confirm the exact calendar date, local time zone, building address, and whether the page distinguishes check-in, inspection, qualifying rounds, and the public show. A venue change can affect travel plans even when the event name remains the same.

Check the competition class

“Combat robot” is not a single class. A listing may offer several weight divisions, sportsman formats, or special rules for weapons. Make sure the class name and maximum weight match what you plan to build or bring. Never assume that a class offered by one league exists at another league’s event.

Check registration status

Look for an explicit label such as open, closed, waitlisted, invite-only, or selection pending. A page that says an event exists does not necessarily mean that competitor entries are available. Spectator tickets and competitor registration are separate processes.

Check the update date and contact route

Prefer a page that identifies a current rules revision, registration window, or event update. Use the organizer’s stated email, registration form, or community channel for questions about an ambiguous design. Save the answer with your event notes so you can show it during inspection if necessary.

Choose whether you want to watch or compete

If you only want to spectate

Confirm that public attendance is allowed and whether tickets, reservations, age limits, or capacity controls apply. Check the hours for doors, matches, pits, and finals; an event may open to spectators later than competitor check-in. Ask whether cameras, bags, food, or children are subject to venue rules.

A spectator visit is also a low-risk way to evaluate an organizer. Observe how competitors move robots through the pit area, how safety officials handle weapon locks, whether the schedule is communicated clearly, and whether the venue has enough space for teams and spectators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want to enter a robot

Read the competitor registration instructions before buying parts. Some organizers ask for information about the builder, team, robot, class, power system, and weapon before you select an event. High-demand events may choose competitors by lottery rather than accepting every registration in time order.

NHRL’s compete process is an example of this distinction: registrants provide information about themselves and their bots before choosing an event, and competitors for high-demand events are selected by lottery. Your confirmation of an account or form submission is therefore not automatically a confirmed tournament slot.

Compare events using the factors that affect your decision

Factor What to verify Why it matters
Distance and venue City, exact building, travel time, parking, public access Long travel with a heavy robot, batteries, tools, or a team may require overnight planning.
Date and schedule Event date, check-in, inspection, matches, finals, and time zone A date can be listed correctly while your required check-in occurs the previous evening.
Weight class Class name, maximum weight, dimensions, and configuration limits A robot legal in one division may be ineligible in another.
Ruleset Current rules revision, weapon restrictions, batteries, radio systems, and materials Rules determine what you can safely build and what must be changed before inspection.
Entry route Open registration, invitation, waitlist, lottery, deadline, or qualification You may need selection or an earlier qualifier rather than simply purchasing a ticket.
Inspection When and where inspection occurs, required documents, weapon locks, and functional tests Missing a safety requirement can prevent a robot from competing even after registration.
Experience fit Beginner guidance, small classes, sportsman options, and organizer support Your first event should match your building, driving, and repair experience.
Attendance goal Spectator policy, pits access, workshops, and educational activities Watching a tournament and entering one require different preparation.

Understand weight classes and local rule differences

Weight limits are organizer-specific. The numbers below are examples from named rule documents, not universal divisions.

Organizer and document Classes or requirement described How to use the information
National Havoc Robot League, 2026 Open Rules 3 lb, 12 lb, and 30 lb classes Use these only when entering an NHRL event governed by its current 2026 rules; confirm whether the particular event offers each class.
NRL Colorado, Technical Regulations revised August 2025 15-pound wheeled class This is an example of a regional event specification. It does not establish a 15-pound class at other leagues.

The rules can also differ on weapon energy, active weapons, failsafes, battery chemistry, radio frequency, armor materials, control systems, tethered testing, and how a robot is handled outside the arena. NRL Colorado’s regulations, for example, describe inspection and safe-handling procedures including weapon locks and controlled activation, and state that each event has safety inspectors. Treat that as a requirement of that organizer’s event, not a promise about every competition.

Read the rules before you build

Start with the eligibility and safety sections

Find the sections covering maximum weight, dimensions, active weapons, electrical isolation, batteries, radio failsafes, sharp edges, flame or projectile restrictions, and transport. Safety rules often affect the design more than the headline weight limit.

Map every rule to a design decision

Create a simple checklist for your robot:

  • Fully assembled competition weight, including batteries, fasteners, weapon locks, and required labels.
  • Maximum dimensions in the starting configuration.
  • Weapon disabled until the official activation procedure permits it.
  • Positive radio failsafe and a way to remove or isolate power.
  • Secure battery mounting and protection from crushing or puncture.
  • External edges and exposed moving parts that meet the organizer’s handling rules.
  • Approved radio system, frequency, and control range.
  • Transport case, lifting points, and a safe method for moving the robot in the pit.

Ask before you commit to an ambiguous design

If the rules do not clearly cover a weapon, material, drive layout, battery, or control method, contact the organizer before ordering parts. NHRL’s rules explicitly encourage competitors to ask proactive questions about uncertain rules. Written clarification is more useful than an assumption made from a video of an older event.

Beginner routes that reduce the learning curve

The Robot Combat League identifies RobotCombatWiki as a starting point for newcomers and SPARC.tools as a source for rules and safety information. NHRL’s compete page provides Havoc Academy, a community Discord, a Combat Robot Design Handbook, and its current rules. These are learning routes, not substitutes for the rules of the event you plan to enter.

For a first event, choose the smallest or simplest class that the organizer offers and that you can legally transport and repair. A lower weight does not remove safety obligations: a small high-speed weapon can still injure someone or damage equipment. Build around inspection requirements from the beginning instead of trying to retrofit safety features at the venue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NHRL’s 2026 Open Rules state, “NHRL is meant for builders of all experience levels, from newcomers to seasoned veterans.” That welcome still depends on submitting a robot that meets the published weight, functional, and safety requirements.

Registration: deadlines, selection, and documentation

Open registration

Complete the organizer’s form with the exact robot name, class, builder or team details, and requested technical information. Save the confirmation email or registration number. Check whether payment, a waiver, or a separate event ticket is required.

Lottery or selection

For a high-demand event, identify the deadline to enter the selection pool and the date when results are announced. Do not book non-refundable travel until the organizer confirms your place. Keep a backup event on your calendar if the selection process is competitive.

Waitlist or closed entry

Ask whether the waitlist admits teams in order, by class, or through another process. A closed competitor list may still allow spectators. Never arrive expecting to compete without written confirmation.

Information to have ready

  • Builder or team contact details.
  • Robot name and class.
  • Measured weight and dimensions in the legal starting configuration.
  • Drive, weapon, battery, and radio-system description.
  • Emergency contact and waiver information if required.
  • Any requested photos, technical drawings, or prior-event record.

Prepare for inspection and safe handling

Inspection is where the written rules become a practical go/no-go decision. Bring the robot in a mechanically safe state, with the weapon secured by the required lock and power isolated until an inspector authorizes testing. Pack tools and spare parts so you can correct a loose fastener, exposed edge, overweight condition, or wiring problem without improvising.

Keep the robot’s measured weight documented. Include every item that remains attached during a match; a last-minute addition such as a battery strap, armor panel, or tether can push a robot over its limit. Label the battery and power-disconnect method if the rules request it, and follow the organizer’s pit instructions for charging and testing.

Ask where controlled activation is permitted and who may operate the transmitter. Do not spin a weapon, drive through a crowded pit, or connect power merely to demonstrate that the robot works. Follow the event’s staff directions even if another competition uses a different procedure.

Plan the travel and event day

For spectators

  • Confirm ticketing, doors-open time, age policy, and accessibility information.
  • Check whether seating, food, parking, and re-entry are available.
  • Allow time for security and venue rules concerning bags or cameras.
  • Bring hearing protection if the organizer warns that impacts and weapons are loud.

For competitors

  • Arrive for the published check-in and inspection window, not merely the first public match.
  • Carry registration confirmation, waivers, identification, and any required team documents.
  • Use a closed, stable container for the robot and protect batteries according to the rules.
  • Bring approved weapon locks, charger, spare fasteners, wiring, tools, and a way to weigh the robot.
  • Identify the pit, safety area, charging area, arena entrance, and staff contact before powering up.
  • Have a repair and recovery plan for damage between matches; a tournament can require several rapid turnarounds.

Current-date caution: verify every schedule

At the time of the cited schedule check, NHRL’s homepage listed November 7, 2026 as its next event. That is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the date, venue, tickets, or competitor places remain available. Confirm it on the live NHRL event page and the corresponding directory listing before making plans.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RobotCombatEvents also displayed a 2026 NHRL qualifier at 165 Water Street in Norwalk, Connecticut, with venue and activity information. The February 7 listing was historical by the cited check date, so it should not be treated as a future opportunity. This illustrates why you must read the year and date on each listing rather than relying on a recurring event name.

Troubleshoot common discovery problems

There is no event near my city

Expand the map radius by realistic driving or flying time, then compare the total cost and class availability. A neighboring state or country may be closer than an event in your own region. If no date works, follow local robotics clubs and organizers for newly announced events, but verify every announcement on the organizer’s current page.

The directory and organizer page disagree

Use the organizer’s current announcement as the working source and contact it for confirmation. Do not register, book travel, or ship a robot until the discrepancy is resolved.

The class I need is not listed

Ask whether the class is omitted because registration is full, the event uses another name, or the division was canceled. Do not enter a heavier or lighter class merely because the robot is close to the limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I am unsure whether my robot is legal

Send the organizer a concise description, dimensions, weight, weapon operation, batteries, and a photo or drawing. Ask a specific yes-or-no question and retain the response. A community discussion can reveal likely issues, but only the event’s officials can make the final ruling.

I want to compete but registration is unavailable

Check for a lottery, waitlist, qualifier, or later registration window. You may still attend as a spectator and use the visit to learn the venue’s inspection and pit procedures before entering a future event.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Find candidate events on RobotCombatEvents within a travel radius you can manage.
  2. Open each listing and verify its date, venue, class, and registration label.
  3. Follow the organizer’s official page and read the current rules and inspection instructions.
  4. Decide whether you are attending as a spectator or entering a robot.
  5. Confirm public-access, ticket, registration, deadline, lottery, waitlist, or selection details.
  6. Match your robot’s weight, dimensions, weapons, power system, and safety features to that event’s rules.
  7. Ask the organizer about any ambiguous design before building, traveling, or shipping equipment.
  8. Save confirmations, clarifications, schedule updates, and emergency contact details.
  9. Recheck the event page shortly before departure because dates, venues, and availability are volatile.

Following this process gives you a defensible answer to “Where can I find competitions?” and prevents the most expensive mistake: treating a directory entry or generic ruleset as permission to attend or compete at a particular event.
