Do not order a replacement solely from the words “Littelfuse EZ80.” Searches for that designation did not verify a Littelfuse fuse model or datasheet. “EZ80” is also used for unrelated parts, including the Zilog eZ80 microcontroller family and the EZ80 double-anode rectifier valve. Identify the equipment, read every marking on the original fuse, and match its electrical, time-current, interrupting, mechanical and approval requirements before fitting anything.
No specific replacement product can be named responsibly until those details are known. A fuse that opens again is often evidence of a circuit fault, not a reason to install a larger fuse, bypass the holder or change the fuse speed.
What “EZ80” may mean
The designation in the title is ambiguous. The searches performed found no verified Littelfuse fuse sold as “EZ80,” no Littelfuse EZ80 datasheet and no authoritative cross-reference that turns the name into a replacement part number. Several unrelated uses of the same characters explain how this error can occur.
| Designation found | What it refers to | Why it is not a fuse identification |
|---|---|---|
| EZ80 | A rectifier valve (tube) used in older equipment | It is an active vacuum-tube device, not a cartridge or plug fuse. |
| eZ80 | A Zilog microcontroller family | The mixed-case name identifies an integrated circuit, not a protective fuse. |
| “EZ80” beside a fuse reference | Possibly a misread marking, a local equipment designation, or a reference to equipment containing an EZ80 valve | The characters alone do not establish current, voltage, speed, dimensions or safety approvals. |
A historical audio power-supply text from Mullard (1963) illustrates the danger. It mentions an EZ80 rectifier valve and a separate 100 mA fuse in the same circuit context. That 100 mA value belongs to that particular historical example; it is not evidence that a “Littelfuse EZ80” fuse is rated 100 mA and is not a replacement recommendation.

Pause and collect the identifying evidence
Before searching a distributor or marketplace, treat the original fuse and the equipment as one identification problem. The equipment model often determines the required fuse even when the fuse body is unreadable.
1. Make the equipment safe
- Switch the equipment off and disconnect it from the mains or battery source.
- Allow power supplies and other circuits to discharge according to the service instructions. Some equipment can retain hazardous voltage after unplugging.
- Do not probe an energized circuit merely to read a fuse. If opening the enclosure exposes mains wiring or high-voltage sections, use a qualified repairer.
2. Record the exact equipment identity
Write down the manufacturer, complete model number, revision or suffix, serial-number range if shown, and the region or supply voltage printed on the nameplate. Photograph the rating label, fuse holder, circuit board reference and the fuse in place before removing it. A service manual for a different revision can specify a different fuse, so a partial model name is not enough.
3. Remove and preserve the original fuse
Use the holder’s intended release method and avoid crushing the fuse body. Keep the failed fuse until all markings have been documented. If the fuse is in a clip or soldered directly to a board, do not substitute a wire while trying to remove it; have a technician handle the repair.
How to read the markings on a fuse
Fuse markings are compact, and a single letter can change the required behavior. Transcribe upper- and lower-case characters, punctuation, spaces and symbols exactly; “T” and “F,” for example, are not interchangeable labels.

| Marking or feature | What it may identify | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Number followed by A or mA | Nominal current rating, such as amperes or milliamperes | That the value belongs to this equipment revision and is paired with the correct time-current characteristic. |
| Number followed by V, VAC, V~ or VDC | Rated voltage and sometimes whether the rating is AC or DC | Whether the replacement is approved for the circuit’s actual voltage and current type. |
| F, FF, T, TT or a manufacturer code | Possible fast-acting or time-delay behavior, or a series identifier | The maker’s data sheet or equipment schematic; letters are not universal across every marking system. |
| Breaking-capacity or interrupting symbol/value | How much prospective fault current the fuse can safely interrupt at its rated voltage | The required short-circuit rating for the installation and the exact test standard or approval. |
| Certification marks | Safety approvals for a jurisdiction or equipment category | That the replacement carries the approvals required by the equipment and region. |
| Dimensions, terminal or pigtail style | Physical series and mounting format | Exact length, diameter, end-cap style, lead spacing and holder compatibility. |
Some markings are printed on the metal end caps, and others are on a label, circuit-board silkscreen or fuse-holder door. A clear, close photograph in good light is useful, but a photograph cannot replace the equipment documentation when characters are worn or ambiguous.
The ratings that must match
Current rating is only one part of a fuse specification. Littelfuse describes current rating as a nominal manufacturer-established value determined under controlled test conditions. The value must be interpreted together with the fuse’s construction, ambient conditions and time-current behavior.
Current rating
Use the value specified by the equipment manufacturer or schematic. Do not increase the ampere or milliampere value to stop nuisance operation. A higher-current fuse can allow wiring, a transformer, a power semiconductor or a battery lead to overheat before the fuse opens. Conversely, selecting a lower value can cause opening during normal startup or load changes.
Rated voltage and circuit type
The fuse’s voltage rating is the maximum circuit voltage at which it is designed to interrupt a fault safely. A higher number printed on a candidate does not automatically make it equivalent: the construction, dimensions, approvals and interrupting performance still have to suit the circuit. Verify whether the circuit is AC or DC and follow the equipment documentation rather than assuming an AC marking covers a DC application.

Time-current behavior
Fast-acting and time-delay designs respond differently to brief inrush or startup current. The correct choice is the one specified for the equipment or shown by its time-current curve. Replacing a fast fuse with a slow fuse can permit damaging fault current to persist; replacing a time-delay fuse with a fast fuse can cause repeated opening during a normal startup surge. Do not infer the behavior from the glass or ceramic appearance alone.
Interrupting (breaking) rating
Littelfuse defines interrupting rating, also called short-circuit rating, as “the maximum approved current which the fuse can safely break at rated voltage.” The candidate must meet or exceed the fault-current requirement for the equipment and installation at the applicable voltage. A fuse that fits the holder but has inadequate interrupting rating can fail dangerously when clearing a high-current short.
Temperature, environment and approvals
Ambient temperature, enclosed holders, vibration, moisture and continuous loading can affect a fuse’s operation. Use the derating and environmental information in the manufacturer’s data sheet when it is provided. Preserve required agency approvals and markings; an electrically similar component without the required approval may not be acceptable for the equipment or jurisdiction.

| Physical check | Questions to answer | Failure if ignored |
|---|---|---|
| Length and diameter | What are the measured body dimensions, including end caps? | The fuse may not seat, or a smaller body may not make reliable contact. |
| Construction | Is the body glass, ceramic or another material? Is there sand fill, a visible element or an opaque body? | Construction can be tied to voltage, interrupting rating and fault behavior. |
| Terminations | Are there metal end caps, blade terminals, screw terminals, clips, radial leads or axial pigtails? | A component can have the right electrical value but be mechanically incompatible. |
| Holder and spacing | What fuse family does the holder accept, and is there a retaining door or orientation requirement? | Improvised fit can create loose contacts, heating or exposed live parts. |
| Board or chassis mounting | Is the fuse replaceable, soldered, clipped or part of a specialized assembly? | Replacing it without the correct mounting method can damage the board or defeat protection. |
Never enlarge a holder, bend terminals to force a fit or wrap foil around a fuse. Those actions change the protection system and can create an arc or fire hazard.
A reliable identification workflow
- Transcribe every visible marking. Include the complete code, current and voltage values, time-delay or fast-acting letters, certification marks and any manufacturer logo.
- Measure the physical format. Record body length and diameter with a ruler or caliper, then note terminal style and holder type.
- Consult the equipment documentation. Search the exact model and revision in the owner’s manual, service manual, schematic or parts list. The documentation is the authority when it conflicts with a guess based on appearance.
- Ask the equipment manufacturer or a qualified repairer. Provide the model, supply region, clear photographs and the original markings. Ask for the complete fuse specification, not just an ampere value.
- Check the candidate’s complete data sheet. Confirm current, AC/DC voltage, time-current curve, interrupting rating, dimensions, terminal style, operating temperature and required approvals.
- Compare the candidate against the original specification. A part is suitable only when every required attribute matches or the manufacturer explicitly lists it as an approved equivalent.
- Install only after finding the cause of failure. If the fuse opened immediately, inspect for shorted components, wiring damage, reversed polarity, stalled motors, failed rectifiers or other faults identified by the service procedure.
- Test under controlled conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s repair and safety procedure. If the replacement opens again, stop testing and obtain diagnosis instead of fitting a higher-rated fuse.
What to do when markings are missing or illegible
Do not guess from color, length or the fact that the equipment still powers on with a temporary substitute. Use the equipment model and schematic to recover the specification. If the model cannot be identified, a qualified repairer may be able to trace the circuit and determine the intended fuse, but that requires appropriate test equipment and knowledge of the circuit’s prospective fault current.
Generic assortments are not a solution to an unidentified fuse. They may contain a physically compatible part with the wrong current rating, speed, interrupting capability or approval. Keep the failed fuse and all photographs so the source of the identification can be checked later.

Common mistakes and the safer correction
- Buying by the phrase “EZ80 fuse.” Correction: verify whether EZ80 is a misread marking, an equipment reference or an unrelated tube or microcontroller designation.
- Using the historical 100 mA number. Correction: treat it only as the value in Mullard’s 1963 audio example, not as a specification for your equipment.
- Matching amperage while ignoring speed. Correction: obtain the specified time-current type or curve.
- Assuming a higher voltage rating is automatically safer. Correction: verify AC/DC application, interrupting rating, construction, dimensions and approvals.
- Installing a larger fuse after a repeat failure. Correction: stop and diagnose the underlying circuit fault.
- Bridging the fuse for testing. Correction: do not defeat the protective device; use the manufacturer’s service procedure or a qualified repairer.
- Substituting a different physical series because it “looks right.” Correction: compare dimensions, holder style and the complete data sheet.
When you can identify the right replacement
You have enough information to order only when the equipment documentation or manufacturer has established the fuse specification and the candidate’s data sheet confirms every relevant attribute. Save the source document with the equipment records, and label any spare with its complete rating so the ambiguity does not return at the next service.
If all you have is the phrase “Littelfuse EZ80,” the correct next action is identification, not substitution. The equipment model, a clear photograph or transcription of the original fuse, and the holder details are required to resolve whether the designation contains a typo or refers to something other than a fuse.
