To estimate a Pokémon card’s value, identify the exact printing and condition, then compare it with recent completed sales of matching cards. Active listings show what sellers are asking—not what buyers have paid—and no price guide guarantees what a card will sell for.
Identify the exact card before checking prices
A Pokémon’s name alone is not enough to find reliable comparisons. Record the details that distinguish one printing from another:
- Printed card name and card number.
- Set or expansion, and year or edition where shown.
- Language and any rarity or special markings.
- Version or finish, such as holo, reverse holo or promo.
Use a card scanner or image search only to find possible matches, then confirm the printed details yourself. eBay notes that its scanner may return alternatives when it cannot identify a card confidently, and foil cards may not be recognized correctly. Its Price Guide supports English and Japanese Pokémon cards; that is not a claim of coverage for every language or market.
Assess condition and grading status
For an ungraded card
Inspect both sides under good light. Check corners and edges for whitening or wear, and look across the surface for scratches, scuffs, dents, creases, stains, discoloration or other damage. A clean-looking front does not establish that a card is Near Mint. When comparing raw cards, look for sales of copies with similar visible wear and use marketplace condition labels consistently. eBay’s collectible-card condition categories include Near Mint or Better, Lightly Played, Moderately Played and Heavily Played.

For a graded card
Record the grading company and numeric grade shown on the slab label. Compare it with completed sales for the same card graded by the same company at the same grade, when enough sales exist. A different grader or grade is not an equivalent comparison; include the certification number in your records so you can keep the specific slab straight.
Find completed sales, not just asking prices
Search for recent completed transactions that match the card’s printing and condition. On eBay, the Price Guide is accessible from My eBay/Collection or an eligible listing. Refine a search with details such as set, year, variant, grader and grade where applicable. The guide says it uses completed eBay sales, matches the same card and grade when available, and includes accepted Best Offer prices in its displayed median—not merely the original asking price.

Review several comparable results rather than treating one sale as a definitive value. Check the transaction date, price, sale format and number of matches where available. Exclude results for a different printing, language, condition, slab grade or a multi-card lot. An active listing can help you understand current competition, but it is a seller’s requested price rather than evidence of a completed sale.

When there are few close matches, give more weight to the uncertainty: use a range based on the available comparable transactions rather than presenting a precise figure. eBay notes that rare cards or cards sold infrequently may not produce results.

Use eBay estimates within their limits
eBay’s Price Guide says its data refreshes every 24 hours and that actual prices can vary with condition, timing, demand and other factors. The feature is currently available only in the US, so its results should be treated as an eBay-market benchmark, not a universal global value or a prediction of what a card will sell for elsewhere.
eBay describes a separate market-value figure in its seller guidance as “an eBay proprietary calculation that estimates a card’s value at that particular moment in time.” That page says the figure is based on eBay transaction history and updated every few minutes in that market-value feature. This cadence applies to that feature; it is distinct from the Price Guide’s stated 24-hour refresh.

The Price Guide says it uses eBay sales data primarily and incorporates some external context, including PSA and CGC population reports and the Card Ladder Index. It does not report every marketplace’s transactions, and its estimate should not be treated as guaranteed resale value.

If you are buying
Compare the offered card with sales for the same printing and comparable condition or grade. Consider shipping and other transaction terms as well as the card price. If the offer is above or below the comparable sales, check for a specific reason—such as a condition difference or a mismatch in the sale records—rather than assuming the price guide promises a future resale price.
If you are selling
Use the matching sales as a reference for an asking price, then choose a sale format that suits your priorities. Describe defects plainly and photograph the front, back, blemishes and grading label clearly. eBay’s seller guidance recommends clear front-and-back images and showing blemishes and grading labels.
Check transaction protections separately from value
A valuation estimate does not authenticate a card. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee policy covers eligible collectible card game single cards subject to its rules. The policy states a $200 Buy It Now price or auction-sale threshold for eligible trading cards, with requirements involving the card, grader and location. For example, it specifies sales on eBay.com by sellers in the continental US or Canada to buyers in the continental US, and limits some purchases of graded cards from Canadian sellers by US buyers. Check the current policy for the particular transaction; it is not a guarantee for every Pokémon card sale or every market.
