When the player is online, join the server, press F2, and copy the complete Platform User ID shown beside the player’s character name. Preserve the platform prefix, underscore, and capitalization exactly. If the player is offline, search the dedicated-server log for that player’s connection entry and read the local Platform ID shown there.
What a Valheim player ID is
Valheim’s administration files do not use a display name as the permanent identifier. They use a Platform User ID: a value that identifies the player’s platform account. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guidance defines the format as [Platform]_[User ID] and marks it as case sensitive.
The complete value includes both parts. The platform prefix is not decorative, and the capitalization is not optional. Copying only the numeric or account portion, removing the underscore, or changing uppercase and lowercase characters can produce a value that does not match the player’s account.
Iron Gate states: “The Platform User ID can be obtained from the Server log or from within the game using the F2 panel and follows the format [Platform]_[User ID] (case sensitive).” The two supported lookup routes are therefore:

- F2 player panel: best when the target player is connected to the server.
- Server log: useful when the player is offline or you have direct access to the server’s console and files.
Find the ID while the player is connected
The in-game panel is the quickest method because it shows the player and the identifier together. Have the target player join the correct dedicated server before starting.
- Connect to the server. Join with an account that can enter the server and remain connected while you perform the lookup.
- Open the player panel. Press F2 while you are in the game. This opens the panel that lists players currently associated with the server session.
- Open the Players section. Use the player list rather than relying on a chat name or a name typed into a console command.
- Match the character name. Locate the target player by the character name displayed in the list. If several people use similar names, confirm the identity with the player before copying anything.
- Copy the entire Platform User ID. Select the complete value shown beside the player’s name. Include the platform prefix, the underscore, and every character after it.
- Check the text before saving it. Compare the copied value with the panel. Make sure no leading or trailing character was omitted and that capitalization is unchanged.
The F2 panel is an in-game lookup, not the administrator command console. The player must be connected for that player to appear in the current list; an offline player requires the log method below.

If the person has already disconnected, the dedicated-server log is the documented fallback. You need access to the machine, host control panel, or console where the server writes its log files.
- Open the current server log. Use the log exposed by your dedicated-server installation or hosting control panel. The exact interface depends on where the server runs, but the relevant information is in the server’s connection records.
- Search for the player’s character name. Use the name the player used in Valheim, not an assumed platform username. Search the log for connection-related entries around that name.
- Identify the matching connection entry. A player may have joined more than once, so check the date or surrounding connection details when the log contains multiple matches.
- Read the local Platform ID nearby. Current hosting documentation describes the identifier shown near the connection entry as the local Platform ID. Copy the full value, including its prefix and capitalization.
- Validate the result. Treat the log value the same way as an F2 value: it must retain the complete
[Platform]_[User ID]structure and exact case.
The log method is especially useful when the administrator cannot ask the player to reconnect. It also works when the administrator has console or file access but is not currently playing in the server world.
Which lookup method should you use?

Use F2 when you need a fast, visual confirmation. Use the log when the player is no longer connected or when administration is being done from the server host rather than from inside the game.

Put the ID in the correct administration file
After you have copied the value, place it in the file that matches the action you want to take. Iron Gate’s guidance uses one ID per line.

Do not substitute a character name for the Platform User ID. Do not remove the platform prefix, and do not combine multiple IDs on one line. Keep each complete value as its own line so the server can match the entry as written.
Administrator file
For administrator access, add the copied value to adminlist.txt. This is the file intended for users who should receive administrative privileges.
Ban file
For a persistent ban entry, add the value to bannedlist.txt. Verify the ID against the F2 panel or the relevant log entry before saving, particularly when character names are similar.
Allowlist file
For a restricted server, add approved users to permittedlist.txt. This file has a broader effect than an individual ban: Iron Gate warns that enabling it “will ban everyone else from the server.” Check every intended member before relying on this file, because a missing ID can prevent that user from entering.

Locate the files on Windows or Linux
Iron Gate lists these default Valheim save locations:

These are defaults, not guarantees. A dedicated server can override the location with the -savedir [PATH] server option. If the expected files are not in the default directory, determine whether the server was started with -savedir and inspect that alternate path instead.
Windows path checks
On Windows, enter %USERPROFILE%/AppData/LocalLow/IronGate/Valheim/ in File Explorer’s address bar, or navigate through the equivalent profile folders. If the files are absent, check the server startup configuration for a -savedir argument before creating a new file in the default directory.
Linux path checks
On Linux, inspect ~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/ for the three list files. The tilde represents the home directory of the account running or managing the server. If the server process uses a different save directory, follow the path supplied to -savedir rather than assuming the default location is active.
Use the in-game admin console for name-based actions
Valheim also provides an administrator console for direct commands. Iron Gate lists these dedicated-server commands:

The in-game admin console opens with F5. These commands use a player name, while the administration files use Platform User IDs. That distinction matters: F5 is suitable for an immediate name-based action, but it is not a replacement for copying the exact ID when you are editing adminlist.txt, bannedlist.txt, or permittedlist.txt.
When an ID is still necessary
Use the ID lookup when you need to maintain a list, identify a player after they disconnect, or avoid relying on a name that could be mistyped or shared. Use the F5 commands when the player is present and you need one of the listed actions immediately. The documented lookup sources remain the F2 panel and the server log.

Troubleshoot a missing or rejected ID
The player is not visible in F2
Confirm that the person has joined the same dedicated server and is still connected. The panel’s Players section reflects the current connected session; it is not an archive of everyone who has ever joined. If the player has disconnected, switch to the server-log method.
You copied only part of the value
Return to the F2 panel or the matching log entry and copy the complete Platform User ID. The required value includes the platform prefix and underscore as well as the user portion. A partial value is not equivalent to the displayed identifier.
The entry looks correct but differs in capitalization
Compare every letter with the source. Iron Gate specifies that the format is case sensitive, so changing capitalization can prevent the server from recognizing the entry.

The character name appears more than once in the log
Use the connection context to select the right record. Check when the player connected and compare nearby details with the time the player actually joined. Copy the Platform ID from the matching entry rather than the first search result.

Check the server’s startup options for -savedir [PATH]. A custom save directory takes precedence over the Windows or Linux default location listed above. Editing a file in the unused default folder will not affect a server that is saving elsewhere.
You are unsure which file to edit
Match the intended outcome to the filename: administrators go in adminlist.txt, banned users go in bannedlist.txt, and approved users for a restricted server go in permittedlist.txt. Keep one complete ID per line in all three files.
An allowlist blocks an expected player
Review permittedlist.txt character by character. Because the permitted list excludes everyone not listed, a missing ID has a different consequence from an ordinary typo in a non-restrictive list. Confirm that every intended user’s full, case-sensitive Platform User ID is present.
Practical verification checklist
- The target player joined the correct dedicated server, or you located the correct connection entry in the server log.
- You used the F2 Players section for an online lookup or the log for an offline lookup.
- You copied the complete value in
[Platform]_[User ID]format. - The platform prefix and capitalization match the source exactly.
- You selected the file that matches the intended action.
- Each ID occupies its own line.
- You checked the active save directory, including any
-savedir [PATH]override. - You reviewed every entry before using
permittedlist.txt, since unlisted users are excluded.
Answering the common questions
Where do I see a Valheim SteamID?
For server administration, look for the Platform User ID in the F2 player panel or in the server log. The value may include a platform prefix, so copy the displayed string instead of assuming that a numeric Steam account value alone is the required entry.
Can I find a player ID from the server console?
You can retrieve it through the server log when you have console or file access. The listed F5 commands are for kicking, banning, unbanning, and displaying bans by player name; the documented ID lookup itself is the F2 panel or the log.
What should I enter in adminlist.txt?
Enter the player’s complete, case-sensitive Platform User ID, including the platform prefix and underscore, with one ID per line.
