To investigate a photo, search for it visually, check the pages where matching images appear, review any available metadata, and corroborate important claims with independent context. These steps can uncover useful leads, but a visual match, an online “first seen” date, or a metadata field does not by itself prove when a photo was taken, who created it, or whether it is authentic.
Start with a visual search
A reverse image search looks for visual matches and related pages, rather than relying on words you already know about the photo. Google Lens accepts an image or screenshot, and can return similar images, objects in the picture, and websites containing the same or similar imagery. On desktop, Google documents uploading a file, dragging and dropping it into the search field, or searching with an image URL. See Google’s instructions for searching with an image.
Use the clearest version of the image you have. If the full image produces irrelevant results, try a crop that keeps the subject and useful visual context. A crop can help focus a search, but it also removes surrounding details that might distinguish the original scene from a similar one. Treat the results as leads to investigate, not as a verdict.

Open promising results and inspect the page around the image. A page that identifies the photographer, event, location, or original publication is more informative than a thumbnail or an image-only result. Compare the caption and surrounding text with the claim you are checking, and note whether the page gives a date and explains how it knows the image’s context.

In supported Google Search experiences, “About this image” may show when Google first found a similar image, other pages using the image or similar versions, and earlier uses. Google describes this as information about the image’s online history; it is not a verified date of capture. An image may have existed or circulated before Google indexed a matching version. Availability of the feature can vary by device, region, and experience. Details are in Google’s About this image help page.
Review metadata without treating it as proof
Image metadata can contain information such as a creator’s name or details about how an image was created. It may be useful when it is present and consistent with other evidence, but metadata can be removed, changed, or inaccurate. Google specifically cautions that credit and digital source type metadata may be modified by image-generation and editing tools, so those fields are not conclusive evidence of authorship or authenticity. Read Google’s explanation of image metadata.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCorroborate consequential claims
If the photo is being used to support a consequential claim, compare the earliest useful page you can locate with other sources that use the image. Check whether the caption, date, place, and event agree. Look for a source that provides context rather than simply repeating the same claim, and be alert to versions that have been cropped, captioned differently, or reused in a new context.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- Visual match: Shows that images look alike; it does not establish which one is original.
- Earlier online appearance: Provides an indexing or publication lead; it does not establish when the photo was captured.
- Metadata: May offer creator or creation clues; it can be missing or altered.
- Context and corroboration: Help assess whether the image supports the stated event, date, and location.
Google’s documentation presents contextual clues, not a definitive authenticity verdict. No single result in this workflow should carry more weight than its evidence supports.

If you want to identify a product shown in an image rather than trace the image’s origin, Lens can return product details or shopping results in supported regions. That is a separate object-search use case; shopping results do not establish who took the photo or where it first appeared.
