To find someone or a pet in Google Photos, open Search and select the face group. On Android, you can also open Collections > People & pets and tap the person or animal. If the group has a name, type that name or nickname in the search box. Names and face labels are private to your Google account, even when the photos themselves are shared.
If you cannot find People & pets or a particular face, check whether Face Groups is available for your region, domain and account type, enabled in settings, and populated with groups. Google Photos cannot search a person or pet by a group label until it has detected and grouped that face.
Use face groups for a direct lookup
Face groups collect photos that Google Photos believes contain the same person or pet. They are the quickest way to browse a familiar face across your library, but they are not a complete inventory of every image. A face must first be detected and assigned to a group, and the feature may not be available on every account.

- Open the Google Photos app and tap Search.
- Choose the person or pet’s face group from the people and pets results.
- Scroll through the matching photos and videos.
On Android, Google’s documented route is Collections > People & pets. Open the group you want and tap its face. The Search screen and the People & pets collection lead to the same type of grouped results; use whichever entry point is visible in your app.

On a computer
- Go to Google Photos and sign in to the account that contains the library.
- Use the search field and select the relevant face group, or open the People & pets collection if it appears in the navigation.
- Select the face to view the associated photos and videos.
Google says classic search places the most relevant matches first, followed by relevant photos and videos in reverse chronological order. Results can also contain items from shared albums or conversations; those items are marked as shared content.
Name a face group so text search works
A face group is not automatically searchable by a person’s real name. You must label the group first. Labels are account-private: other people do not see the name you assign, even if they can view a shared photo.
Add or change a name on Android
- Open Collections > People & pets.
- Tap the face group you want to identify.
- Tap Add a name.
- Enter a name or nickname and save it.
After labeling, type that name or nickname into the Google Photos search box. The label is a convenience for your account, not a caption that is written onto the photo or shared with viewers.
Set your own face as “me”
To make searches for your own photos easier, label your face group as me when Google Photos offers that option. You can then search for “me” instead of relying on a personal name. This setting affects your account’s search experience; it does not alter the underlying files.
Classic Search or Ask Photos?
Use classic Search when you already know which person or pet you want. Ask Photos is an optional conversational experience for more complicated questions, such as combining a person with an event or a type of image. It requires opting in to Gemini features in Photos on a supported mobile account.

Ask Photos does not replace the need for a face group. If the person or pet has not been detected or grouped, a conversational request may not locate the images either. For a known face, classic Search is the more predictable route.
Why People & pets is missing
Google identifies three broad reasons that the People & pets collection may not appear:

- Feature availability: Face Groups may not be offered in your country or region, or may be restricted for your Google Workspace domain or account type.
- Face Groups is turned off: The privacy setting may have been disabled.
- No groups exist yet: Photos has not created any face groups in the library.
These conditions are different from a simple search mistake. If the feature is unavailable to the account, changing a search term will not make the collection appear. If it is enabled but no groups have been generated, give Photos time to process the library and check again later. Google’s help pages do not document a manual way to force an undetected face into a new group.
Check and manage Face Groups settings
On Android, open your profile picture or initials, then go to Google Photos settings > Privacy > Face Groups. The setting controls whether Photos groups faces for the account.

Stop grouping pets but keep people grouping
If you want people groups but do not want pets included with people, use the Show pets with people option in the Face Groups settings. Turning that option off separates the pet-related display behavior without disabling people grouping altogether.
Before turning Face Groups off
Disabling Face Groups is destructive to the grouping data. Google’s official help states: “If you turn off Face Groups, you delete: Face groups in your account; Face models that were used to create those face groups; Face labels that you created.” In practical terms, turning it back on does not preserve the old groups, labels or face models. You may need to wait for Photos to create groups again and then relabel them.
Use the off switch only when you accept that loss. If one result is wrong, remove that result from the individual group instead of disabling the entire feature.
Fix an incorrect or incomplete face group
Remove a wrongly grouped photo
Open the face group, select the incorrectly included photo or video, and use the group’s remove option. Removing a result from a face group changes the grouping, not your library: Google says the underlying photo or video remains in Google Photos and is not deleted.
This is the appropriate correction when a look-alike, reflection, statue, illustration or unrelated pet has been assigned to the wrong group. It also avoids the account-wide data deletion caused by switching Face Groups off.
When a genuine photo is absent
A missing image may have no detectable face, may be too small or obscured for grouping, or may not have been processed yet. The official instructions explain how to manage groups and remove incorrect results, but do not provide a documented manual command for adding an undetected face. You can still locate such an image with other search terms—such as date, place, album or object—if those details are available.
Do not confuse face groups with hiding a face from Memories
Google Photos has separate controls for the featured memories carousel. Hiding a face there does not delete the person’s photos and does not generally remove the face from Search or the People & pets collection.
“Show less”
The Show less choice suppresses dedicated memories for that face. The person can still appear in memories that contain a group of people.
“Blocked”
The Blocked choice excludes that face from memories, including group-photo memories. This changes what appears in the memories feature; it is not a command to delete the photos or erase the face group used for search.

Exclude shared items from results
Search can return unsaved photos and videos from shared albums or conversations. Google marks these with a shared-content badge. If you want results limited to your own library, use the control in search to exclude shared items where that option is available.
This matters when a face appears in a friend’s shared album but is not part of your uploaded collection. Excluding shared content helps distinguish photos stored in your library from items you can merely access through sharing.
Privacy and account boundaries
- Face labels are private to the account holder, including labels attached to shared photos.
- Face grouping is controlled by the account’s Face Groups setting and may be restricted by region, domain or account type.
- Turning off Face Groups deletes the account’s groups, the face models used to build them and labels you created.
- Removing an item from a group does not remove the original file from the library.
- Memories hiding controls the featured memories carousel, not general photo deletion or a universal search block.
If you share a photo with someone, they may be able to view the image according to the sharing permission, but they do not gain access to your private face-group names.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Work through these checks in order so that a privacy setting is not changed unnecessarily:

- Try both entry points: Open Search, then check Collections > People & pets on Android.
- Check Face Groups: Go to Profile picture or initials > Google Photos settings > Privacy > Face Groups.
- Check availability: If the setting or collection is absent, the feature may not support your region, domain or account type.
- Look for a group rather than a name: A face can exist as an unnamed group. Open the group and use Add a name before trying a text search.
- Inspect shared-content results: Remove shared items from the result set if you only want photos in your own library.
- Correct individual mistakes: Remove an incorrectly grouped result; do not turn off Face Groups just to fix one image.
- Use alternative search terms: For an image with no usable face group, search by date, place, album or visible subject.
If no groups appear after Face Groups is enabled and the library has had time to process, the account may not be eligible for the feature or the images may not contain faces that Google Photos can group. Google does not publish a guaranteed recognition percentage or a universal processing deadline, so an absent match should not be treated as proof that the photo is missing.
What to expect when searching on the web
On a computer, classic Search is useful for checking whether a mobile result is actually present in the account. Sign in to the same Google account, open Google Photos, and select the face group or use the search field. Relevant matches appear first, with other relevant photos and videos arranged from newest to oldest. Shared items may appear alongside library items unless you exclude them.
Web and mobile views use the same account-level grouping data, but labels and availability can still be affected by account type, domain and region. If a work or school account behaves differently from a personal account, the domain’s eligibility may be the reason rather than a browser problem.
Questions that often cause confusion
Can I search a person by typing their name immediately?
Not unless the face group has been labeled first. Google Photos does not infer that a text name should map to an unlabeled group. Open the group, choose Add a name, and save a name or nickname. The label then works as a private search term for your account.

Why do I see a person in a shared album but not in my library?
Search may include unsaved photos from shared albums or conversations. A shared-content badge identifies those results. They can be visible to you without being uploaded to your own library. Exclude shared items when you need a list containing only your stored photos and videos.
Does deleting a face-group result delete the original?
No. Removing a photo or video from a face group only corrects the grouping. The original remains in Google Photos and can still be found through dates, albums, places, objects or other search terms.
Can I turn Face Groups off temporarily and get everything back?
Treat the switch as destructive, not as a temporary refresh. Turning it off deletes the groups, face models and labels in the account. If you later enable it, Photos must generate groups again and you may need to label them again.
Why is my pet mixed into people results?
Face Groups includes a Show pets with people control. Turn that option off if you want to keep people grouping while separating pets from the people display. This is different from disabling Face Groups entirely.

No. Show less and Blocked govern the featured memories carousel. “Show less” reduces dedicated memories but can leave the person in group memories; “Blocked” excludes the face from memories, including group photos. Neither setting deletes photos or necessarily removes the face group from Search.
Is Ask Photos more accurate than a face group?
Google presents Ask Photos as experimental and warns that answers may be unexpected or inaccurate. It is useful for conversational combinations, but classic Search remains the more predictable option for opening a known person or pet group.
Why can’t Google Photos find a clear-looking face?
A face may be too small, covered, turned away or not processed yet. There is no documented manual command for forcing an undetected face into a group. Use date, place, album or subject searches to locate the image another way.

Why can’t I see People & pets?
Face Groups may be unavailable for your region, Google Workspace domain or account type, turned off in Privacy settings, or enabled without any groups created yet.
How do I search by someone’s name?
Open the face group, choose Add a name, and save a name or nickname. Only then will typing that label in Search find the group. The label is private to your account.
Can I add a face manually?
