Use a handheld pinpointer after your ground-search metal detector has located a signal: scan the recovered plug and the hole, then follow the probe’s changing audio or vibration response to the target. Power-on steps, controls, and water limits vary by model, so check the instructions for your exact device before starting.
What a pinpointer does—and when to use it
A handheld pinpointer is a recovery aid, not a replacement for a ground-search metal detector. The main detector narrows the search to an area; the pinpointer helps locate the metallic object in the plug, loose soil, or hole. Garrett describes its PRO-POINTER as a non-motion, all-metal detector intended to assist recovery when used with a ground-search detector (Garrett PRO-POINTER operating instructions).
How to use a pinpointer to locate the target
- Find the signal with your main detector. Use the ground-search detector to identify the area before bringing out the pinpointer.
- Switch on the pinpointer according to its manual. Do not assume every model starts or calibrates the same way. Garrett advises holding its PRO-POINTER away from metal at startup and warns that switching it on next to a target can cancel the target. For the PRO-FIND 15 and PRO-FIND 35, Minelab says to keep metal away from the probe and wait for the short third beep before detecting (Garrett instructions; Minelab FAQ).
- Recover the plug or loose soil, then scan both it and the hole. Move the probe through the material methodically rather than checking only the bottom of the hole. Minelab recommends using the tip to check the sides of the hole.
- Follow the response as you narrow the search. Garrett describes audio and vibration increasing as its probe moves closer to metal; Minelab describes intensifying audio and vibration on the PRO-FIND 35 as it approaches a target. Use the change in response to guide the next small movement. The precise signal pattern depends on the model and selected mode (Garrett instructions; PRO-FIND 35 product details).
- Adjust sensitivity only if your model provides that control. If the probe responds across too much of the hole, reducing sensitivity may tighten the search area. Minelab says this can help with the PRO-FIND 35 in mineralised or salty soils; its five sensitivity levels are specific to that model, not a universal pinpointer setting (PRO-FIND 35 product details; Minelab FAQ).
- Check the water rating before rinsing or submerging the device. Follow the rating and battery-cap instructions for your exact model. Minelab lists the PRO-FIND 35 as waterproof to 3 m (10 ft) and says its battery cap must be fully tightened before submerging; that rating should not be applied to other pinpointers (PRO-FIND 35 product details; Minelab FAQ).

Specifications can help match a pinpointer to your field conditions, but the cited manufacturer pages do not establish a controlled head-to-head performance result. The features below are documented examples, not a ranking.
