The most reliable way to find a nearby construction-aggregate supplier is to start with your state transportation department’s aggregate or approved-source resources, then contact several listed producers directly. Confirm the exact aggregate type and gradation, available quantity, delivery territory, minimum load, schedule, and delivered charge before ordering. For a specification-driven project, also verify that the source and test documentation satisfy the project’s jurisdiction and contract documents.
What “local supplier” should mean for your project
A supplier is local only if it can serve the job economically and on the required schedule. A quarry may be close to the site but unable to deliver to your address, while a farther producer may have the right material, available trucks, and a lower delivered cost.
Define local by the jobsite, not by the supplier’s mailing address. The practical questions are whether the business can deliver to the site, whether pickup is available, how much material it can provide, and whether the haul and unloading arrangements fit the project.
Construction aggregates include products sold under different local and project-specific names. A listing may describe coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, crushed stone, gravel, sand, base material, or drainage stone. Those labels are not interchangeable. Ask the supplier to identify the product’s specification, size range, and gradation rather than ordering only by a casual name such as “gravel.”

Start with your state transportation department
Use the FHWA state resource index
In the United States, the Federal Highway Administration maintains a state-by-state index that leads to state transportation-agency resources for aggregate producers and material sources. The FHWA page was updated March 25, 2024. It can point you to producer lists, material-source inventories, approved-product lists, maps, and related agency contacts.
Use the index to reach the transportation department for the state where the material will be delivered. If a project crosses a state line, check the requirements of the state governing the work and ask the supplier whether its source is recognized there. An approval list from one state is not automatically a nationwide approval.
Expect different tools in different states
State agencies do not publish one uniform database. One state may provide an interactive map, another a downloadable producer list, and another an approved-source or material-acceptance database.

- Florida’s transportation department provides aggregate-source listings and production-facility map queries.
- Other states may separate source approval, producer information, test data, and facility locations into different pages or systems.
Use these resources for discovery and screening. They are not a live inventory system and generally do not establish today’s stock, price, delivery radius, or truck availability.
Turn the project need into a precise search specification
Before calling suppliers, write down what the project actually requires. This prevents a common error: comparing quotes for materials that have similar names but different performance or grading.
Record the material description
- Material category: for example, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, sand, gravel, crushed stone, base, or drainage material.
- Required size or gradation, using the project specification’s exact designation where one exists.
- Whether the material must be washed, screened, crushed, recycled, or otherwise processed.
- Required quantity and the unit used by the project documents, such as tons or cubic yards.
- Whether the material will be picked up or delivered.
- Any source, approval, test-report, or chain-of-custody requirement.
Use practical search wording
When a state list is difficult to search, combine the material and location in ordinary search terms such as Where can I buy gravel near me?, local aggregate supplier, stone delivery near me, or bulk sand and gravel supplier. Add the county, town, project location, and product name. These phrases help locate businesses; they are not evidence of search-volume or market-share data.

Do not confuse geology with a supplier directory
Geological maps can show areas where suitable rock or sand may occur, but they do not confirm that a facility is operating, selling material, accepting new customers, or delivering to your site. USGS Bulletin 1594 is background geology rather than a current supplier locator. Treat geological information as context, not as a purchasing lead.

Build a short list from agency records and local searches
Start with several facilities that appear capable of supplying the required material. Include producers, quarries, sand-and-gravel operations, and established aggregate yards that can document their source. A directory entry is a lead, not a recommendation or guarantee.
Screen each candidate before requesting a formal quote
- Does the business list the exact material or a clearly compatible specification?
- Is the facility operating in the period when you need the material?
- Does it deliver to your jobsite, or is customer pickup practical?
- Can it supply the complete quantity, or would multiple sources be needed?
- Can it provide the approval or test documentation required by the project?
Keep at least two viable candidates when timing allows. A source can become unavailable because of production, weather, transportation, or a temporary facility restriction.
Call suppliers with a repeatable verification script
Ask every candidate the same questions and record the answers in the same units. This makes later comparison meaningful.
Confirm the product
- State the project location and the exact material description from the plans or specification.
- Ask for the supplier’s product name, size range, gradation, and applicable specification designation.
- Ask whether the product is currently produced at the listed facility or supplied from another source.
- Request a recent gradation sheet or other product information when the project requires documented properties.
Confirm quantity and availability
- Give the total quantity and the desired delivery or pickup period.
- Ask how much is currently available and whether the full order can be scheduled without substituting another product.
- Ask about minimum order size, minimum truckload, and whether split deliveries or partial loads are allowed.
- Confirm whether stock is reserved only after a purchase order, deposit, or scheduled dispatch.
Confirm delivery terms
- Provide the exact delivery address, access instructions, and any restrictions on truck size or arrival time.
- Ask whether delivery is priced per load, by weight, by distance, or through another method.
- Request every delivery-related charge, including minimum-load, fuel, waiting, or special-access charges if the supplier applies them.
- Confirm the earliest realistic delivery date, delivery window, and the process for rescheduling due to weather or site conditions.
- Ask whether pickup is available, what vehicle requirements apply, and whether the facility loads customer vehicles.
Do not assume that a website, map, or directory reflects real-time stock or current pricing. The supplier’s written quote or direct confirmation is the relevant information for your order.
Check project approvals and aggregate quality
Follow the contract and jurisdiction first
Public works and specification-driven private projects may require an approved source, an approved producer, specific test results, or documentation submitted before delivery. Read the project documents and identify the agency or engineer responsible for acceptance. Requirements vary by state, owner, material, and use.

Florida transportation documents, for example, address source approval and producer quality-control responsibilities. That process is an example of a state requirement, not a rule that automatically applies elsewhere.
Ask for the properties that matter to the application
North Carolina transportation resources publish aggregate resource and test-data information that can include specific gravity, abrasion, absorption, fineness modulus, and sulfate soundness. If your project specification calls for one or more of these properties, ask the supplier for the applicable report and confirm that the report covers the source and product you are buying.
The name of a quarry alone does not prove that every product from that quarry meets your project’s limits. Different ledges, processing lines, stockpiles, or gradations may have different data. Match the documentation to the material designation and source shown on the quote.

A small residential or commercial job may not require formal source approval, but documentation can still prevent an unsuitable delivery. For retaining walls, drainage, concrete, asphalt, structural fill, or other performance-sensitive work, ask what quality information the supplier can provide and keep the product description with your project records.
Compare delivered quotes, not just advertised unit prices
There is no universal current price for construction aggregates. Delivered cost depends on the material, quantity, distance, minimum load, truck availability, and project timing. Government resource pages identify sources and approval information; they do not provide a comparable live price survey.
Request quotes for the same product, quantity, unit, delivery address, and delivery window. Compare the complete amount you will pay to receive usable material at the site.

Use a written quote worksheet
For each supplier, record the quote date, contact person, product designation, source facility, quantity, unit, material charge, delivery charge, minimum-load rule, tax or other stated charges, promised schedule, and quote expiration. Note whether the quote is conditional on stock, a specific truck count, or a future production run.

Ask suppliers to state whether the quoted quantity is sold by weight or volume. Do not convert tons to cubic yards using a guessed density. If you need a conversion, ask for the supplier’s stated bulk density or loading basis and keep that assumption with the estimate.
Plan quantities and site logistics before placing the order
Measure the work area carefully
For a rectangular area, calculate length multiplied by width multiplied by the planned depth to obtain a volume. Irregular areas can be divided into simpler sections and added. Then ask the supplier or project engineer how the specified material is normally ordered and whether the design depth is loose, placed, or compacted.
Compaction, settlement, trimming, and handling can change the amount required. Do not add an arbitrary percentage when the project documents or supplier can provide a better basis. Have the responsible contractor or engineer approve the quantity for specification-driven work.
Check the delivery route and unloading point
- Confirm that the truck can reach the site without damaging pavement, shoulders, curbs, septic systems, or underground utilities.
- Check overhead wires, narrow gates, steep grades, turning space, soft ground, and local weight or access restrictions.
- Decide where the load will be dumped and whether that area can hold the full quantity without blocking traffic or drainage.
- Arrange a person to inspect the load and direct the driver when the truck arrives.
- Keep delivery tickets and note the product, source, quantity, and time for each load.
If the site cannot accept a standard delivery truck, tell the supplier before accepting the quote. A special vehicle or staged delivery may cost more or require a different schedule.
Choose the supplier using a documented decision
After verification, rank suppliers against the factors that matter to your project rather than selecting the nearest name on a map.

For a simple non-specification project
Prioritize a product that matches the intended use, a confirmed delivered total, dependable scheduling, and safe site access. A modest difference in unit price may be outweighed by an extra load, an inaccessible truck, or a delayed delivery.
For a specification-driven project
Treat compliance as a prerequisite. Eliminate a source that cannot satisfy the required approval or test documentation, even if its price is lower. Then compare equivalent compliant quotes on delivered cost, schedule, and logistics.
For a large or recurring order
Ask how production and dispatch will remain consistent across multiple loads. Confirm whether all loads will come from the same source and product designation, and specify how substitutions must be approved. Keep the quote, purchase order, tickets, and quality documents together.
Common problems and how to correct them
The directory lists a supplier, but nobody answers
Try the agency’s alternate contact or a second listed facility. Directory information can lag behind operating changes. Do not treat an unanswered listing as evidence that material is available.
The supplier has “gravel,” but not the required material
Read the specification again and ask for the supplier’s gradation or product sheet. If the product names differ, have the engineer or project owner confirm equivalence before ordering. Do not substitute based only on color, appearance, or a similar retail name.
The quoted price seems unusually low
Check whether the quote excludes delivery, applies only above a minimum quantity, uses a different unit, or covers a different gradation. Ask for the complete delivered total in writing and compare it with the same assumptions from other suppliers.
The source is approved, but the product is not accepted
Verify that the approval applies to the specific facility, product, gradation, and project jurisdiction. A source approval may not cover every material produced there. Ask the supplier and the approving agency what documentation or submittal is missing.

The truck arrives when the site is not ready
Confirm the delivery window only after access, unloading space, labor, and equipment are prepared. Ask about waiting and rescheduling charges, and notify the supplier as soon as conditions change.
Final ordering checklist
- Identify the state, project jurisdiction, jobsite address, and responsible owner or engineer.
- Copy the exact aggregate type, size, gradation, quantity, and unit from the project documents.
- Use the FHWA state index and the relevant state transportation resources to find candidate sources.
- Check supplier maps, producer lists, source listings, or approved-material databases for leads.
- Contact multiple candidates and confirm product, source, stock, quantity, minimum order, pickup, delivery territory, charges, and schedule.
- Obtain the approval status and test information required for the project.
- Compare equivalent delivered quotes, including minimum-load and access-related charges.
- Verify truck access, unloading location, weather contingency, and who will receive each load.
- Place the order in writing and retain the quote, product description, tickets, and quality documents.
This process gives you a defensible supplier choice even when no city or material type is known in advance. The state resource identifies where to look; the supplier and project documents determine what you can safely and compliantly buy.
