Start by deciding whether you need to see surface materials—such as sand, silt, river deposits or glacial sediment—or the bedrock beneath them. Nebraska’s 2026 statewide surficial map is a useful starting point for surface geology; the older statewide bedrock map answers a different question. For a county or property, use either statewide map for orientation, then search for a more detailed local map that actually covers the location. Check the map’s scale, date, extent and legend before relying on it: a statewide map is not a property-level subsurface assessment.

Choose the kind of geology you want to see

“Geologic map” can mean different things. A map of surface deposits describes materials at or near the land surface. A bedrock map shows the older rock units beneath those deposits, while a bedrock-surface map may focus on the shape or elevation of the top of the bedrock. These products are not interchangeable: the right one depends on the question you are trying to answer.

  • For surface geology: look for a surficial or surface-geology map. It may depict wind-blown sand and silt, river deposits, glacial material, artificial fill and other surface units.
  • For underlying rock: look for a bedrock-geology map. It describes bedrock units, which may be covered by younger sediment.
  • For depth or buried-topography context: look for a map specifically describing the bedrock surface or bedrock-surface configuration. That is a distinct subject from a map of bedrock types.

This distinction matters especially in Nebraska. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says more than three-quarters of the state is covered by sediment. The 1986 statewide map showed bedrock structure beneath the surface, but did not represent the newer surface sediments. The 2026 statewide surficial map was created to depict geology at the land surface.

Start with Nebraska’s statewide maps

2026 statewide surficial map: surface materials

The USGS and Nebraska released the first statewide map depicting Nebraska’s geology at the land surface in 2026. It is a 1:500,000-scale synthesis. Its source inputs include geologic, soil, soil-parent-material and geomorphic maps, as well as derivatives of LiDAR data. Use it to get a statewide or regional view of surface geology and to identify the kinds of deposits mapped around a county or town.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The map’s scale is a critical limitation. At 1:500,000, it is a statewide synthesis, not a close-up survey of individual properties. A feature visible on it may be generalized, and the map should not be treated as proof of the material beneath a particular building site, well or parcel. Although some source mapping used to create it was more detailed, the final statewide product remains at 1:500,000.

1986 statewide bedrock map: underlying geology

The Geologic Bedrock Map of Nebraska by Burchett, published in 1986, is a statewide bedrock reference at 1:1,000,000 scale. The Nebraska Geological Survey catalog is identified as a source for the paper map. It can provide broad context about bedrock geology, but its subject is underlying bedrock rather than the newer sediments at the land surface. Its statewide scale also makes it unsuitable for property-level conclusions.

Compare map products before using one

Map product What it depicts Scale and date Best use and limitation
Nebraska statewide surficial map Geology at the land surface, synthesized from geologic, soil, soil-parent-material, geomorphic and LiDAR-derived inputs 1:500,000; released in 2026 Regional orientation for surface materials. It is not a parcel-scale assessment.
Geologic Bedrock Map of Nebraska, by Burchett Statewide bedrock geology 1:1,000,000; published in 1986 Broad context for underlying geology, not a detailed map of surface deposits or a site investigation.
Omaha-area map Artificial fill, alluvial, eolian and glacial deposits, and bedrock Published in 2001; scale not stated here An example of a more local map with several mapped material types. Confirm its mapped extent and legend before applying it elsewhere.
Broken Bow quadrangle map Bedrock-surface configurations Scale and publication date not stated here An example of a local product with downloadable map and GIS files. It addresses bedrock-surface configuration, not necessarily the surface geology question you may have.

The comparison shows why “find the county map” is not always a single search. A local map may cover only a quadrangle or a particular topic, and available examples do not establish complete county-by-county coverage. Check whether the mapped boundary includes your location rather than assuming a map title or nearby town means it does.

Find a local map for a county, town or property

  1. Identify the location. Write down the county and, if possible, the nearby town, quadrangle name or property location. A county name is a useful search term, but a quadrangle or town may find maps whose titles do not mention the county.
  2. Search an official map catalog. The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) record for Nebraska’s statewide surficial map links to the publication and GeMS GIS data. Search official geologic map catalog records using the county, quadrangle, nearby town or the topic you need—such as surficial geology, bedrock geology or bedrock-surface configuration.
  3. Open the map record and verify its extent. Inspect the map boundary or index and confirm that the location falls within the mapped area. A map about Omaha or Broken Bow, for example, is a local example, not evidence that the same mapping covers other counties.
  4. Read the title, legend and explanatory notes. Establish what the mapped units mean and whether the product shows surface deposits, bedrock units, or a bedrock surface. Check any stated exclusions, generalization or source-data information.
  5. Check scale and publication date. A larger representative fraction, such as 1:24,000 rather than 1:500,000, generally provides a more detailed map view, but scale alone does not establish the accuracy or suitability of a map for a particular decision. Note when it was published and what source data it used.
  6. Choose a usable format. Determine whether the record offers a static map sheet, GIS data, or both. GIS data can be useful for viewing and comparing mapped layers, but it does not make a map more precise than its scale, source data and intended scope support.

Nebraska surficial mapping has been conducted primarily at 1:24,000 scale since the mid-1990s, according to the USGS’s 2026 database. That does not mean every county has a published map at that scale, or that the statewide synthesis itself is 1:24,000. The state map combined source information ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:1,000,000 and was published at 1:500,000. Look at the scale of the specific product you found, not just the scale of the source mapping mentioned in its documentation.

What a geologic map can—and cannot—tell you about a property

A geologic map can help you understand regional context and identify the mapped materials or bedrock units in an area. It may help you formulate questions for a more local investigation. It cannot, by itself, establish exact subsurface conditions at a parcel. A statewide map is generalized by design, and even a more detailed local map has a defined scale, mapped subject and boundary.

For a property question, distinguish between what the map depicts and what you need to know at the site. A surface map is not automatically a map of buried bedrock; a bedrock map does not necessarily characterize the deposits at the surface; and a bedrock-surface map is not a report on every soil or fill layer. If a decision depends on site-specific ground conditions, do not treat a regional map as a substitute for appropriate site-specific information.

Common search problems and how to avoid them

You find a statewide map but need a county-level answer

Use the statewide product as an index to the general setting, then search for local or quadrangle maps. Check the actual coverage rather than assuming that a statewide map is sufficiently detailed or that every county has a dedicated map.

You find a map, but it depicts the wrong material

Return to the title and legend. If you need surface deposits, a bedrock-only product may not answer the question. If you need the underlying rock or bedrock-surface shape, a surficial map may not be enough.

The map mentions a detailed source scale

Do not transfer a source map’s scale to a statewide synthesis. Nebraska’s statewide surficial product is 1:500,000 even though surficial mapping has often been conducted at 1:24,000 and the synthesis used inputs at multiple scales. The scale printed for the map you are viewing is the relevant one.

You cannot find an address-search viewer

Use official catalog searches by county, quadrangle, town or map subject, and verify each result’s extent. A current University of Nebraska–Lincoln address-search map-viewer workflow is not established here, so do not assume a particular interface or sequence of clicks.

What to check before relying on a map

  • Subject: surface geology, bedrock geology or bedrock-surface configuration?
  • Extent: does the map boundary include the location?
  • Scale: is it a statewide overview or a more local map?
  • Date and inputs: when was the map published, and what source information does it use?
  • Legend: what do the units and symbols actually represent?
  • Format: is there a static sheet, downloadable GIS data, or both?
  • Purpose: is regional context enough, or does the question require site-specific information?

Paul Hanson, director of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Conservation and Survey Division Geologic Mapping Program, has described Nebraska’s surficial materials as including the Sand Hills, loess and sediments associated with major river systems including the Missouri and Platte. That variety is one reason to look carefully at the mapped subject and local legend rather than treating “Nebraska geology” as a single uniform layer.
