Start by recovering the trailer’s original URL or 11-character YouTube video ID. Use that identifier to check the game publisher’s official channels, search the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, and look for lawful reuploads using the exact title, uploader, description wording, and surviving thumbnail. A saved web page can prove what the trailer was without containing a playable video, so verify every candidate against its runtime, edit, audio, uploader, date, and publisher context.
What “taken down” can mean
A dead trailer link does not identify one single problem. YouTube can make a video unavailable after a valid copyright removal request, a Community Guidelines or Terms of Service action, a trademark complaint, or a geographic block. The game itself may still be active, and the publisher may have moved the trailer to a new upload or another channel. YouTube’s removal guidance explains that a copyright owner can request removal and that the original video can then become unavailable: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot video removals.
Before searching, classify the symptom you see:

The visible message is useful evidence, not a guarantee of the underlying cause. A copyright claim or takedown can leave the trailer available in a press kit, news post, event archive, or replacement upload.

Search quality depends on the identifiers you can preserve. Do not rely only on a remembered game name; many trailers have generic titles such as “Launch Trailer” or “Gameplay Reveal.” Assemble a small record from every place where the link may have appeared.

Where to look
- Browser history and bookmarks on computers and phones you used when watching it.
- Old messages, email, chat logs, forum posts, social posts, and comments containing the link.
- Playlists, watch-history exports, embedded pages, and articles that quoted or framed the trailer.
- Screenshots, downloaded thumbnails, desktop folders, and notes that show the title or channel.
- Search-engine snippets for the old URL, trailer title, or a distinctive sentence from its description.
Record the fields that distinguish one upload from another

Keep the original URL unchanged. Do not remove query parameters until you have tried the complete address; an archived page may have been captured under that exact form.
Step 2: Check the rights holder and original event first
The publisher or developer is the best first stop because an official replacement is usually the most stable and clearly authorized copy. Search the game’s official website, newsroom, press kit, verified social accounts, and current video channels. Also check the platform holder or event organizer that originally presented the trailer, such as a showcase page or conference archive.
Search paths that often preserve an official copy
- Use the site’s search for the exact trailer title, game name, and words such as “reveal,” “launch,” “announcement,” or “press kit.”
- Open dated news posts around the original announcement. An article may embed a replacement video even when the old embed is dead.
- Inspect the publisher’s current video channel for reuploads with a revised title, subtitle, language track, or platform label.
- Check press-kit pages for downloadable trailers or event recordings. Confirm that the page is controlled by the rights holder or event organizer.
- Look at verified accounts for the developer, publisher, studio, and event. Reposts from an official account can be legitimate even when the first upload vanished.
When an official copy exists, prefer it over a mirror even if the mirror is easier to play. Record any meaningful differences, such as a shorter cut, changed logos, removed music, updated subtitles, or a regional version.

Step 3: Read the removal state without trying to bypass it
Removal notices are procedural clues, not invitations to evade controls. YouTube identifies copyright, Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, trademark, and geographic-blocking situations among the reasons a video may be unavailable. A valid copyright removal request can remove the original upload while leaving the same trailer legally available from the rights holder elsewhere.

Do not use methods intended to defeat a regional block, recover a private file without permission, or re-upload copyrighted footage. YouTube’s Prevent Copies and Copyright Match features are rights-holder tools for people who have the necessary rights and approved removal requests; they are not a public archive for viewers. If you believe a removal was an error, the appropriate route is the uploader’s or rights holder’s appeal process. For a viewer, the safe recovery path is to locate an authorized copy or preserve the trailer’s identifying metadata.
Step 4: Search the Internet Archive Wayback Machine
Paste the complete original URL into the Wayback Machine. Start with captures from before the date you think the trailer disappeared, then inspect captures immediately before and after that period. If the URL has no useful result, search the exact title, game name, publisher, and a distinctive description phrase; then open surrounding pages such as publisher news posts, event pages, and articles that embedded the player.
The Internet Archive warns that it cannot guarantee any particular website will be archived. A page may be absent because it was never crawled, excluded by robots.txt, or removed at an owner’s request. Its usage guidance is available at Using The Wayback Machine.

A practical Wayback sequence
- Open the Wayback Machine and enter the original YouTube URL, including the video ID.
- Choose a capture date before the takedown. Try several dates because one capture may preserve the page while another includes more assets.
- Copy any preserved title, uploader, upload date, description text, thumbnail, playlist context, and links to the publisher or event page.
- Open the calendar’s neighboring captures and linked pages. A news article may have been archived even when the video host was not.
- If direct playback fails, search the title and distinctive phrases within the archive and on the open web. Record the capture timestamp and what the archive actually preserved.
Do not equate a successful page load with video recovery. Internet Archive’s own warning covers whether a page was captured; it does not promise that every embedded asset or media response is playable.
Metadata is not the same as a playable video
An archived YouTube page can preserve the title, uploader, date, thumbnail, description, or embed code while missing the underlying video file. A metadata-only capture is still valuable because it confirms identity and gives you better search terms, but it cannot restore playback by itself.

Preserve screenshots or notes of the metadata and capture date. This evidence can identify the trailer for a publisher, archivist, or journalist even when the media itself is gone.

After checking official sources and the Wayback Machine, search for copies using several independent queries. Start with the exact title in quotation marks, then add the game, publisher, uploader, or the original video ID. Search the distinctive description phrase as a separate query. Check reputable game-news channels, event archives, and other video platforms, but treat every non-official copy as a candidate until its provenance is clear.

Queries that narrow the search

If you have the original thumbnail, use reverse-image search. The image may have been copied into a news article, forum post, or mirror listing even when the video page is gone. Archivarix specifically recommends searching the original title across multiple video platforms and using the thumbnail to discover copies: finding a reupload guide.
Do not download or redistribute a mirror merely because it is easy to find. A fan upload may be unauthorized, altered, monetized without permission, or removed later. Use it for identification only unless the rights holder or a reputable outlet clearly authorized publication.

Titles alone are weak evidence. Compare the candidate against the identifiers you collected and assess it on six axes: authority, completeness, fidelity, provenance, availability, and region/access status.

Signs that a candidate is not the original
- The runtime is shorter and starts after the publisher logo or ends before the title card.
- Watermarks, commentary, reaction windows, added music, or subtitles not present in the archived metadata appear.
- The uploader’s account was created long after the campaign and provides no source or permission statement.
- The thumbnail is reused but the footage belongs to a different trailer, platform, or language version.
- The title contains “leak,” “fan edit,” “mirror,” or “reupload” without an explanation of authorization.
When copies conflict, prefer the official version. If no official version exists, describe the candidate accurately as a mirror or excerpt rather than calling it the original.

What to do when every playback attempt fails
A failed Wayback playback attempt does not prove that no older capture contains media. Repeat the search with the exact URL, nearby capture dates, title terms, publisher pages, and embedded articles. If all routes fail, preserve the recovered metadata and report the limitation precisely: you identified the upload, but no playable authorized copy was located.
Create a useful recovery record
- Original URL and video ID.
- Exact title, uploader, approximate date, game, publisher, and trailer number.
- Thumbnail URL or saved thumbnail image.
- Distinctive description text and links to archived surrounding pages.
- Wayback capture URLs and dates, with a note about whether each preserved metadata or media.
- Candidate mirrors, their runtimes, upload dates, and reasons for accepting or rejecting them.
This record prevents repeated dead-end searches and gives the rights holder or an archival project enough information to investigate without guessing which trailer you mean.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives

A compact decision path
- Have the original URL or video ID? If not, recover it from history, messages, embeds, screenshots, playlists, and snippets before doing broad searches.
- Is there an official copy? Search the rights holder, event organizer, press kit, newsroom, verified accounts, and current channels. Use this copy when available.
- Does the removal notice explain the state? Record whether it indicates copyright, policy, privacy, or geographic limits; do not bypass the restriction.
- Does Wayback preserve the page? Capture metadata and surrounding pages. Test playback, but do not assume an archived page contains the file.
- Are there credible reuploads? Search exact identifiers and reverse-search the thumbnail, then verify authority, completeness, fidelity, provenance, availability, and access status.
- Nothing checks out? Keep the metadata record and state that no playable authorized copy was found. That is a valid result, not evidence that the trailer never existed.
What you can and cannot establish
You can often establish the trailer’s identity, original uploader, approximate date, title, thumbnail, and publisher context even after the video disappears. You may also locate an official replacement or a complete authorized publication. You cannot infer that a video file survived merely because a search result, embed, thumbnail, or archived page remains. Nor can you call a mirror “the original” without matching its content and provenance.

No published recovery-rate statistic establishes how often deleted game trailers can be recovered. Outcomes depend on whether the rights holder reposted the video, whether an archive captured the media response, and whether a complete authorized copy was syndicated elsewhere. The most defensible result is therefore either a verified official copy, a clearly labeled and well-supported mirror, or a documented identification showing that playback is currently unavailable.
