Open the game’s Steam store page, scroll to Customer reviews, and use the controls beneath the review summary. Choose All Languages or Your Languages, set Review Type to All, Positive, or Negative, and select a Playtime minimum (and maximum when the page offers those fields). Steam shows the active settings and matching-review count, so you can confirm that the results are narrowed as intended.
Where Steam’s review filters are located
Filtering is done on each game’s official Steam store page rather than in a separate review-analysis application.
- Sign in to Steam and open the store page for the game you want to investigate.
- Scroll down to the Customer reviews section. On a long page, the browser’s find command for “Customer reviews” can get you there faster.
- Look beneath the review summary for controls labeled Language, Review Type, and Playtime. The exact arrangement can change as Steam updates its store interface.
- Set one or more controls, then read the filter summary shown above or beside the review list. It identifies the active criteria and reports how many reviews match them.
If a control is not visible, expand the review section or check whether the page is using a compact layout. Steam can expose additional options in the same area, but the three controls above are the ones that narrow by language, recommendation, and the author’s playtime.

What each filter actually measures

These axes are independent. A negative review is not automatically a low-quality review, and a reviewer with many hours is not automatically more accurate. Use the filters to build a relevant reading set, then inspect the actual evidence in each review.

How to filter Steam reviews by language
Choose all languages
Under Language, select All Languages when you want the broadest available pool. This is useful when a game has relatively few reviews in your preferred language or when you are checking whether a problem is reported internationally. You may need your browser or Steam client to translate individual reviews; the filter itself only changes which reviews are displayed.
Choose your languages
Select Your Languages to limit the list to languages associated with your Steam language preferences. This is the quickest way to read reviews you can understand without manually sorting through the full pool.
Steam’s review system allows authors to indicate the language in which they wrote. In a May 3, 2017 announcement, Steam said helpful reviews in languages the browsing customer speaks would be prioritized by default. That statement describes Steam’s policy at that time; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every current page uses exactly the same default ordering.
Check the result before reading
After changing the language setting, confirm that the filter summary names All Languages or Your Languages. If the number of matching reviews does not change, the page may already have been using that setting, or the game may have too few reviews for the difference to be obvious.
How to see negative Steam reviews
Use Review Type
In the Review Type control, choose Negative. Steam then displays reviews whose recommendation is negative. Choose Positive to examine recommendations, or All to return to both groups.
This is a recommendation-polarity filter, not a star rating, author-reputation score, or verification grade. A negative recommendation can contain detailed technical information, while a positive recommendation can be brief. Read the text and look for concrete descriptions of performance, content, controls, support, or other issues that matter to you.
Pair negative reviews with another criterion
Negative reviews become easier to interpret when you narrow them by language or playtime. For example, selecting Negative plus Over 1 hour (when that option is offered) focuses on criticism from reviewers who had at least that much playtime at the moment they posted. Selecting Negative plus Your Languages reduces translation friction. The matching count in the filter summary tells you whether the combined set is large enough to reveal a pattern.

How to filter Steam reviews by playtime
Understand the time reference
Steam labels this control “Filter reviews by the user’s playtime when the review was written.” That qualifier is important: it is not necessarily the author’s current total playtime. Someone may have continued playing after publishing the review, or stopped playing soon afterward.
Set the available threshold
Open Playtime and choose one of the minimum-playtime options shown on that page. A current example page offers No Minimum and Over 1 hour. Do not assume those are universal choices: thresholds and fields can vary by game page and by Steam’s interface version.
Some pages provide editable minimum and maximum fields. If both are present, enter the bounds you need and apply them using the page’s visible control. A minimum helps exclude first-impression posts; a maximum can isolate early reactions or players who stopped after a short session. If no maximum field appears, Steam is not offering that bound in the current view.
Use playtime as context, not proof
Playtime helps you compare perspectives, but it does not establish expertise or correctness. A short session can reveal an installation problem or an immediate usability flaw. A long session can reveal progression balance, endgame systems, or performance degradation that a new player has not encountered.
Combine language, playtime, and review type
Steam applies the selected criteria together, so each additional setting usually reduces the displayed pool. Use this sequence when you want a repeatable scan:
- Set Language first. Start with Your Languages for readable results, or All Languages when you are checking whether an issue crosses language boundaries.
- Set Review Type. Choose Negative to investigate complaints, Positive to study strengths, or All for a balanced sample.
- Set Playtime using the threshold actually shown on the page. Avoid assuming that a threshold available for one game exists for another.
- Read the active-filter summary and matching count. If the set is tiny, relax one criterion before drawing a conclusion.
- Open several reviews rather than relying on the first item. Compare whether they describe the same symptom, timeframe, platform, or game mode.
Practical combinations

Read the filter summary and display choices correctly
The review area can show a summary of active filters and the number of matching reviews. Treat that summary as your checkpoint after every change. If it still names an old setting, the new selection has not been applied or the page has reverted after navigation.
Steam may also show display choices such as Summary, Most Helpful, Recent, and Funny. These affect how matching reviews are presented or ordered; they are not replacements for the language, playtime, or recommendation filters. A “Most Helpful” view can surface a review with many community reactions, while “Recent” emphasizes newer posts, but neither changes what the author’s language, recommendation, or recorded playtime means.

Other nearby controls may include purchase source, date range, Steam Deck or device filters, and an option related to off-topic activity. They can be useful for a narrower investigation, but they answer different questions. For example, a date range concerns when the review was posted, whereas playtime concerns the author’s recorded hours when that review was written.

Why your page may not match another guide
Steam changes interface details
Steam’s store pages are updated over time, and responsive layouts can place controls in different positions. Follow the labels visible in your Customer reviews section rather than expecting a fixed screenshot or a universal list of thresholds.
A filter is unavailable
Not every page exposes identical playtime bounds or every adjacent control. If you see only No Minimum and one higher option, those are the choices available in that view. Do not substitute the review date for playtime or infer a missing maximum.
The count is unexpectedly small
- Change Review Type from Negative or Positive to All to see whether polarity is the cause.
- Switch Language to All Languages to test whether the language restriction is excluding most reviews.
- Lower the playtime minimum or select No Minimum if available.
- Check that an adjacent date, device, purchase-source, or off-topic setting has not also been applied.
The results look unchanged
Confirm the filter summary and count, then scroll far enough to see whether the list has refreshed. If the summary does not reflect the selection, reload the store page and repeat the change. A small or homogeneous review pool can also make two settings appear similar even when they are technically different.
A worked filtering example
Suppose you want to know whether experienced players report a recurring performance problem, but you only want reviews you can read comfortably. Open the game page, set Language to Your Languages, set Review Type to Negative, and choose the highest practical playtime minimum displayed on that page. Then read the matching-review count before opening any individual post.

First switch Review Type to All to see whether the scarcity comes from the negative subset. If the count is still low, change the language to All Languages or lower the playtime threshold. Record which change increased the sample, because it tells you whether the original conclusion depended heavily on language or playtime selection.
For a contrasting check, keep the same language and playtime settings but choose Positive. Compare whether positive and negative reviewers discuss the same feature. This side-by-side approach avoids mistaking the most visible complaint for the game’s only important characteristic.

How to choose a useful playtime range
Use No Minimum when you need the broadest set or when you are looking for immediate issues that can appear during setup or a first session. Use a higher minimum when the question depends on sustained play, such as progression, late-game balance, or problems that emerge after repeated sessions. The filter does not certify that a reviewer reached a particular mission, mode, or technical state; it only reports the recorded hours at publication.
When editable minimum and maximum fields appear together, keep the interval tied to your question. A low maximum can help isolate first impressions, while a narrow interval can make two groups easier to compare. Avoid entering arbitrary bounds simply to produce a small, impressive-looking list. A narrow result may omit relevant evidence and should be labeled as a narrow sample when you draw conclusions from it.
Questions the three filters can answer
- Language: “Can I read reviews in my preferred languages, or do I need the full international pool to find more reports?”
- Review Type: “What are the recommended strengths, and what are the complaints from people who do not recommend the game?”
- Playtime: “Do short-session and longer-session reviewers describe different problems?”
They cannot answer all three questions at once unless the page exposes compatible choices and enough reviews remain after combining them. When the matching count becomes very small, loosen one setting and state which perspective you are adding back.
Historical context: Steam’s stated review defaults
Steam’s May 3, 2017 announcement said its then-default view would show a summary of helpful recent reviews written by Steam customers in languages the viewer speaks. The same announcement described a recent-review score based on positive reviews from the preceding 30 days when enough recent reviews existed and the game had been available for at least 45 days.
Those are dated product statements, not current guarantees for every store page. The live controls and summary displayed on the game page are the authoritative guide to what you are viewing now. If you are comparing older articles or screenshots, differences in ordering, labels, or thresholds can reflect later interface changes rather than an error in your settings.

- Separate frequency from severity. A frequently mentioned issue may be minor, while a rare crash may be decisive for your hardware or play style.
- Check dates when available. A review can describe an earlier build, launch problem, or temporary event. Date filtering is a separate nearby control when Steam exposes it.
- Look for specifics. Concrete reproduction steps, hardware details, modes, and update references are more useful than unsupported declarations.
- Compare recommendations with playtime. Read both short-session and longer-session perspectives when the page offers suitable bounds.
- Account for language and translation. All Languages broadens coverage, but translated wording can lose technical nuance.
- Use multiple reviews. A filter narrows discovery; it does not independently verify a claim.

What the filters cannot tell you
Steam’s controls do not prove that a reviewer is technically qualified, that a recommendation reflects the latest game version, or that a reported problem affects every player. They also do not convert recommendation polarity into a numerical quality rating. Their value is in constructing a relevant sample: language controls readability, review type controls recommendation direction, and playtime supplies context about how long the author had played at publication.

How do I filter Steam reviews by language?

How do I see negative Steam reviews?
In Customer reviews, open Review Type and select Negative. Steam filters by recommendation polarity. You can combine Negative with Your Languages or a playtime threshold to narrow the complaints further.
Can I filter Steam reviews by playtime?

Most Helpful, Recent, Funny, and Summary are display or ordering choices. Language, Review Type, and Playtime narrow which reviews qualify. A display choice does not change the recommendation, language, or recorded playtime attached to a review.
Why did my matching-review count become very small?
Several criteria may be excluding reviews at once. Try All under Review Type, All Languages, or No Minimum, and check nearby date, device, purchase-source, or off-topic settings. Relax one criterion at a time so you know what changed the sample.
The Bottom Line
