Open the Pokémon you want to protect, view its summary, and tap the Favorite star. Niantic says a favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred until it is removed from favorites. To check which Pokémon are protected, search your Pokémon inventory for favorite. Before any transfer, inspect the selected list carefully: Niantic says transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered.
What the Favorite star does
Favorite is a protection flag on an individual Pokémon. The star is available from that Pokémon’s profile or summary. When the Pokémon is favorited, Niantic’s transfer rules block it from being transferred. This is useful for Pokémon you would regret losing, such as a high-value battle pick, a rare catch, or a Pokémon you are keeping for a future decision.
The star is a safeguard inside Pokémon GO, not a backup of the Pokémon outside the game. It does not replace checking a transfer selection, and it does not change other transfer restrictions. An active Buddy and a Pokémon defending a Gym are also blocked from transfer under Niantic’s transfer rules, whether or not they are favorited.
Niantic’s help documentation describes the feature in the Pokémon profile: “You can tap on the star in a Pokémon’s profile to favorite that Pokémon.” The exact appearance of screens can change as the app is updated, but the documented action remains the same: open the Pokémon’s summary and use the star control.

How to favorite a Pokémon
Use this sequence for each Pokémon you want to protect:
- From the Map View, open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your Pokémon inventory.
- Select the Pokémon you want to protect. Its summary or profile opens.
- Tap the Favorite star on that Pokémon’s profile.
After you tap the star, leave the summary and return to your inventory when you are ready. There is no separate save button in Niantic’s documented procedure. If you are protecting several Pokémon, repeat the same action on each one rather than assuming that favoriting one applies to related Pokémon.
Which Pokémon should you favorite?
Favorite Pokémon that you would not want included in a routine cleanup. Common examples include a Pokémon you are building for a particular battle role, one with personal or collection value, or one you are holding for a later evolution or trade decision. The feature is most effective when you use it deliberately: mark the Pokémon that need protection, then use the inventory search to confirm the set before transferring anything else.

How to see all your favorited Pokémon
- Open the Pokémon inventory from the Main Menu.
- Activate the inventory search field.
- Enter
favorite.
The search results show Pokémon marked as favorites. This is the quickest way to audit your protected collection before a transfer session. It also helps you find a Pokémon whose name, species, or storage position you no longer remember.
Use the search as a pre-transfer check
Run the favorite search before selecting Pokémon for deletion or transfer. Compare the results with the Pokémon you intend to keep. Then clear the search and make your transfer selection only after you know which entries are protected. Search is a review aid; it does not itself transfer, unfavorite, or otherwise modify a Pokémon.

Transfer rules you need to know
Niantic allows players to transfer Pokémon to Professor Willow to free storage space and receive Candy. The action is final: a transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered. Treat the confirmation step as a point where you stop and verify the selection, especially when several Pokémon are selected.
Individual transfer
Niantic documents the individual path as:
- Open the Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon.
- Select the Pokémon to be transferred.
- Open the Pokémon’s Menu.
- Tap Transfer, then review the confirmation prompt.
A favorited Pokémon will not be eligible for this transfer until you remove its favorite status. The same applies to a Pokémon that is currently your active Buddy or is defending a Gym. If the transfer option is unavailable, check those states before assuming that the app is malfunctioning.
Bulk transfer
For a group transfer, Niantic instructs you to press and hold one Pokémon, select the additional Pokémon, and then tap Transfer. Bulk selection is faster, but it makes the review step more important because several Pokémon can be acted on together.

Favorites are excluded from transfer while they remain favorited, but you should still inspect the selected list. A star is a protection measure, not a reason to skip the confirmation screen.
Bulk-transfer restrictions and why a selection may fail
Niantic lists additional limitations for bulk transfers. These rules are separate from the Favorite star:

- Multiple Shiny Pokémon cannot be transferred together under the stated bulk-transfer limitations.
- Multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred together under the stated bulk-transfer limitations.
- Buddy Pokémon at Good Buddy level or above have special bulk-transfer restrictions.
- Certain Legendary and Mythical Pokémon have special restrictions. Niantic says a setting must be enabled before multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon can be transferred.
- Favorited Pokémon, the active Buddy, and Pokémon defending Gyms cannot be transferred.
The wording “certain” matters: Niantic’s help page does not say that every Legendary or Mythical Pokémon is handled identically in every transfer situation. If a bulk selection is rejected, remove the restricted entries or use the applicable setting described in the game, then review the selection again.
Keep the categories separate
A Pokémon can be protected for more than one reason. For example, a Pokémon may be both favorited and your active Buddy. Removing the favorite would not make it transferable while it remains the active Buddy. Likewise, a Pokémon that is defending a Gym remains ineligible until it is no longer defending that Gym. Check each applicable status instead of treating the star as the only transfer condition.
How to remove a favorite safely
Niantic states that a favorited Pokémon must be removed from favorites before it can be transferred. Open the Pokémon’s summary and use the same star control that manages its favorite status. Only change that status when you have intentionally decided that the Pokémon no longer needs the protection.
After changing the status, return to the Pokémon inventory and search for favorite to verify that the Pokémon is no longer in the protected results. Then reopen the transfer selection and check the exact Pokémon listed before confirming.
A deliberate two-stage process
- Identify the exact Pokémon you intend to transfer; do not start by clearing favorites broadly.
- Open that Pokémon’s summary and change its favorite status.
- Use the
favoritesearch to confirm the inventory state. - Start the individual or bulk transfer flow.
- Review every selected Pokémon at the confirmation step.
This process keeps the protection change and the irreversible transfer as separate decisions. It also reduces the chance of removing a favorite from the wrong Pokémon in a crowded inventory.

A reliable pre-transfer routine
Use the following routine whenever you are freeing storage or cleaning up duplicates:
- Decide what must stay. Identify Pokémon with collection, battle, Buddy, Gym, or personal importance.
- Favorite the keepers. Open each one’s summary and tap the Favorite star.
- Audit the protected set. Search the inventory for
favoriteand scan the results. - Start with a small selection. For an individual transfer, open only the intended Pokémon. For bulk transfer, press and hold one entry and add others deliberately.
- Check transfer states. Remove any favorited, active Buddy, Gym-defending, or otherwise restricted entries from the proposed transfer.
- Review the confirmation list. Compare names and species with your keep list before tapping the final transfer control.
When using bulk transfer, avoid treating the selected list as a simple count. A number of selected Pokémon does not tell you whether the right individuals are included. Read the entries themselves.

The star is not where you expect
Make sure you opened the Pokémon’s summary rather than staying in the inventory list. Niantic places the Favorite control on the Pokémon’s profile. From the Map View, go through Main Menu, Pokémon, and the selected Pokémon to reach that profile. If labels or placement look different after an update, look for the star within the summary instead of relying on an older screenshot.
The Pokémon does not appear in the favorite search
Return to the inventory search field and enter the term exactly as favorite. Check that you tapped the star on the intended Pokémon’s profile, not on a different entry with a similar name or appearance. If you have several candidates, open each summary and verify them one at a time.
The transfer control is unavailable
Check the documented blocked states first:
- The Pokémon may still be favorited.
- It may be your active Buddy.
- It may be defending a Gym.
- The bulk selection may contain Shiny, Lucky, Buddy, Legendary, or Mythical Pokémon affected by Niantic’s listed restrictions.
For multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, check whether the required transfer setting has been enabled. If the problem occurs only in bulk mode, try an individual transfer for an eligible Pokémon to determine whether the issue is the selection combination rather than the Pokémon itself.

You selected the wrong Pokémon in bulk mode
Do not proceed to confirmation. Return to the selection and remove the unintended entry before tapping Transfer. If the wrong Pokémon has already been transferred, Niantic’s rule is that it cannot be recovered, so prevention at the selection stage is the available remedy.
The app interface looks different after an update
Niantic notes the feature through the profile star, inventory search, and documented transfer paths, while interface labels can shift between app versions. Follow the current on-screen labels that correspond to those actions: open the Pokémon summary, locate its star, search the inventory with favorite, and inspect the transfer selection before confirming.
Practical examples
Protecting one rare catch
Open the Pokémon inventory, select the rare catch, and tap the star on its summary. Search favorite to verify that it appears. Later, when cleaning storage, leave that result out of the transfer selection and inspect the confirmation list.

Cleaning up several ordinary Pokémon
First favorite anything you intend to keep. Then clear the search, press and hold an eligible Pokémon, and add other eligible entries. Before transferring, check that no favorite, active Buddy, Gym defender, or restricted special category has entered the group.
Preparing a Legendary or Mythical transfer
Check whether the Pokémon is favorited and whether it is subject to Niantic’s Legendary or Mythical transfer setting. If transferring multiple Pokémon of those categories, enable the required setting before rebuilding and reviewing the selection. Do not assume that a bulk selection is allowed simply because each individual Pokémon appears transferable.
