The most practical repeatable AP route in Final Fantasy VII Remake is the Shinra parking-garage section in Chapter 16, replayed through Chapter Select after you finish the story. Equip the materia you want to level, link one copy of AP Up to that target, clear the security encounters on the way to the Shinra Building, then restart Chapter 16 and repeat. Chapter 17’s Shinra Combat Simulator and the Corneo Colosseum are credible alternatives, but the available guides do not establish one universally fastest route for every build, party and difficulty.
What you need before farming AP
AP farming becomes substantially more convenient after the story is complete. Finishing the game unlocks Chapter Select, allowing you to revisit earlier chapters while retaining your upgrades and equipment. That lets a post-game character return to Chapter 16 or 17 without rebuilding the party from the beginning.
- A completed story: Chapter Select and its post-game benefits are the foundation of the repeatable routes.
- Materia with unfinished levels: Decide which spells, commands or support materia still need AP before entering the chapter.
- AP Up: Put AP Up in a linked materia slot with one target materia. The guides specifically recommend using the link for a single materia rather than filling it with an already mastered item.
- Equipment with enough slots: Late-game gear generally gives you more room to carry AP Up and several targets at once. The official PlayStation endgame guidance recommends making use of that late-game equipment.
- A reliable area-clear setup: You want battles to end quickly and consistently, not a complicated build that occasionally fails against a group.
Chapter Select carries your upgrades and equipment into the replay, so farming is most efficient once your characters have the weapons, armor and materia needed to dispatch ordinary encounters quickly.

Chapter 16 parking garage: the main AP loop
Chapter 16 is the straightforward route recommended by the detailed guides. Its parking-garage section contains a series of Shinra security encounters on the way to the Shinra Building. You can clear those fights, collect the AP, and restart the chapter to run the same section again.

Step-by-step route
- Open Chapter Select after finishing the story. Choose Chapter 16 and load it with your completed-game equipment and materia.
- Set your materia before the first fight. Equip every materia that needs AP. Place AP Up in a linked slot with one target materia; do not pair it with a materia that is already mastered.
- Enter the parking-garage section. Follow the story path toward the Shinra Building and defeat the Shinra security encounters in the garage and underground parking area.
- Use a fast, repeatable combat pattern. Linked Magnify and Fire are suggested by Gameranx for groups. A GameFAQs guide also mentions First Strike and a Fire/Magnify pairing. These are guide recommendations, not results from a controlled timing test, so adjust them to the materia and weapons you actually have.
- Continue until you reach the Shinra Building. The detailed route guides recommend restarting Chapter 16 after reaching the building rather than continuing through the entire chapter.
- Restart Chapter 16 and repeat. Re-enter Chapter Select, load Chapter 16 again, verify that the same target materia and AP Up are equipped, and run the parking-garage encounters once more.
The important part of the loop is the restart point. If you continue deep into the chapter, you spend time on story sections that are not part of the short encounter circuit. Restarting after reaching the Shinra Building puts you back at the beginning of the chapter for another pass.
Why this loop is practical
- It is available through Chapter Select after the story rather than requiring a special one-time event.
- The encounters are on a predictable route, making the run easy to repeat.
- You can bring your finished-game equipment and a prebuilt area-clear setup.
- You can stop after a pass, change the target materia, and immediately begin another pass.
The evidence supports calling Chapter 16 a dependable repeatable route. It does not support a universal claim that it gives the highest AP per minute for every player. Your clear speed, active party, loadout and chosen difficulty affect how attractive it is compared with the arena routes.
Materia and equipment setup for faster leveling
Use AP Up on one unfinished target
AP Up is most useful when it is linked to the materia you are actively leveling. Put one target materia in the linked slot and leave mastered materia out of that pairing. If you are leveling several items, rotate the target between runs or use additional AP Up links only when your equipment provides the slots and you still have a reason to level each item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore every restart, check the loadout screen. A chapter replay can be fast enough that it is easy to notice several fights later that AP Up was linked to the wrong item or that the intended materia was not equipped at all.
Prioritize available slots over theoretical builds
Late-game gear with more materia slots lets you carry AP Up, a group-damage setup and the materia being leveled at the same time. Do not remove the combat tools that make the route reliable merely to add a low-level target. A failed or slow battle erases the time saved by carrying one extra item.

Use a simple group-damage pattern
Gameranx recommends linking Magnify with Fire to hit groups efficiently. The GameFAQs route also mentions First Strike alongside a Fire/Magnify pairing. Treat these as starting points rather than mandatory requirements:
- Use Magnify with Fire when several enemies can be cleared by one area spell.
- Use First Strike if it lets your party begin the encounter with the command or ATB advantage you need.
- Keep at least one dependable single-target option for enemies that survive the opening area attack.
- Favor the setup you can execute without pausing to reorganize commands between every fight.
No controlled test in the available sources establishes an exact seconds-per-run figure for these combinations. Your weapon upgrades, spell levels and familiarity with the encounters will determine which version is actually faster for you.

Chapter 17 Shinra Combat Simulator
Chapter 17 provides a second post-game option through the Shinra Combat Simulator. The official PlayStation endgame overview identifies the simulator as a post-game challenge location, and guide sources describe its battles as repeatable AP opportunities.
A GameFAQs guide notes that the simulator is accessible soon after starting Chapter 17. That can make it attractive if you prefer selecting an individual battle instead of running through a story corridor. The same guide points out that some battles use fewer party members. A smaller active party can leave more AP-bearing materia slots concentrated on the characters who are actually fighting, but it can also make an encounter harder if your build depends on a full team.
When Chapter 17 is the better choice
- You already have Chapter 17 unlocked and can reach the simulator quickly.
- You prefer a short, menu-selected arena fight to a story route.
- Your current build clears a chosen simulator battle more reliably than the Chapter 16 garage encounters.
- You want to focus AP on the active characters when a challenge uses a reduced party.
Choose a battle you can clear consistently. The sources mention a Chapter 17 Flyers battle in guide discussion, but they do not provide a controlled comparison proving that battle is the fastest option for all players.
Rank #3
Corneo Colosseum challenges
The Corneo Colosseum is another repeatable activity identified by the official endgame guidance and RPG Site’s route coverage. It is useful when you prefer arena challenges or already have a Colosseum rotation that your party clears quickly.
Strengths of the Colosseum route
- It is a self-contained challenge activity rather than a long story chapter.
- You can repeat familiar challenge sets and keep the same AP-focused loadout.
- It gives you an alternative when Chapter 16’s parking-garage enemies are slow or when you want a different battle type.
What to check first
- Confirm that the required chapter and Colosseum challenges are unlocked on your save.
- Check whether your preferred challenge requires a party composition you are not currently using.
- Compare one complete challenge cycle with one Chapter 16 pass using your own clear time, rather than assuming an arena is automatically faster.
The available sources establish the Colosseum as a useful alternative, not as a proven universal winner.
Which AP route should you choose?
| Route | Access | Loop style | Best fit | Known limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chapter 16 parking garage | Chapter Select after completing the story | Run Shinra security encounters, reach the Shinra Building, restart Chapter 16 | Players wanting a predictable story-route circuit | No controlled source comparison proves it is fastest for every build |
| Chapter 17 Shinra Combat Simulator | Replay Chapter 17 and reach the simulator; a guide says access comes soon after starting the chapter | Select and repeat simulator battles | Players who prefer short arena fights or reduced-party AP concentration | Some battles have fewer party members, which can increase difficulty |
| Corneo Colosseum | Use the unlocked Colosseum challenges during the relevant replay | Repeat selected arena challenges | Players who already clear Colosseum fights quickly | Exact AP-per-minute ranking is not established |
Use four practical tests when deciding: is the activity unlocked, how quickly does your current build clear it, how many party members are active, and do you prefer a corridor loop or an arena menu? Run each candidate once with the same AP-focused equipment, then keep the one that feels fastest and most reliable for your save.
What the post-game AP multiplier means
A GameFAQs guide reports that completing the game and using Chapter Select grants 3× AP per battle, along with 2× EXP. Attribute those figures to that guide’s game-version context; the cited official PlayStation material confirms Chapter Select and the endgame activities but does not state those numeric multipliers in the same passage.
The multiplier applies to battles completed during the post-game Chapter Select environment described by the guide. It does not mean every route produces the same AP per minute. The total you receive still depends on which enemies or challenge you cleared, how long your run takes, which party members are active and which materia are equipped. The available material does not provide independently timed run rates or an exact AP total for each route.

Improving your run without wasting AP slots
Prepare one loadout per target group
Group materia by what you intend to level next. For example, make one loadout for elemental spells and another for support materia, keeping the same AP Up link and battle tools in both. This avoids rebuilding the entire party after every Chapter 16 restart.
Remove finished materia immediately
Once a materia is mastered, replace it with the next unfinished target before starting the next loop. A mastered item does not benefit from another AP cycle, and the detailed guide specifically warns against spending the AP Up link on one.
Measure consistency, not one unusually quick fight
One fast battle can be misleading if the next attempt requires recovery or manual menu work. Compare complete loops from chapter start to restart. Keep the route that gives you repeatable clears with minimal setup, even if another route occasionally produces a shorter individual fight.
Use your preferred difficulty responsibly
The route sources do not provide a controlled study of AP rates by difficulty. If you are farming on Hard Mode, use the same Chapter 16, Chapter 17 or Colosseum options only when your party can clear them reliably; a slower or failed Hard Mode battle can be less efficient than a faster clear on a difficulty you handle comfortably. Do not assume that a guide’s route ranking transfers unchanged to your loadout.
Troubleshooting common AP-farming problems
AP is not going to the materia you intended
Pause before the next encounter and inspect every active character’s materia. Confirm that the target is equipped, that AP Up is in a linked slot with that target, and that the target is not already mastered. Correct the loadout before restarting the route.

The Chapter 16 loop takes too long
Verify that you are restarting after reaching the Shinra Building rather than continuing through the rest of the chapter. Then simplify the combat setup: use the Fire/Magnify suggestion for groups if it suits your build, add First Strike if available, and remove unnecessary menu actions. If the route remains slow, test one Chapter 17 simulator battle or a Colosseum challenge with the same equipment.
You cannot access the simulator or Colosseum activity
Check that the relevant chapter and post-game progression are unlocked on your save. Chapter Select is the gateway to these replay activities, and the Chapter 17 simulator becomes available after progressing into that chapter. If an arena challenge is unavailable, use the Chapter 16 parking-garage route while you unlock the desired activity.
A reduced-party simulator fight is too difficult
Some Chapter 17 battles use fewer party members. Reassign defensive, healing and damage materia to the active characters, or switch to Chapter 16 until the simulator battle becomes reliable. The potential advantage of concentrating AP on fewer active characters is not worth repeated failures.
A practical farming checklist
- Story completed and Chapter Select available.
- Target materia identified and not already mastered.
- AP Up linked to exactly one target materia.
- Late-game gear equipped where its extra slots are useful.
- Magnify/Fire and, if appropriate, First Strike ready for group encounters.
- Chapter 16 parking-garage restart point understood.
- Chapter 17 simulator and Corneo Colosseum checked as alternatives.
- Route selected by your actual clear speed and party availability, not by an unverified universal ranking.
Bottom line for fast AP farming
Start with Chapter 16 through Chapter Select, clear the Shinra parking-garage security encounters, reach the Shinra Building, and restart the chapter. Keep AP Up linked to one unfinished materia and use a simple group-clear setup. If Chapter 17’s Shinra Combat Simulator or the Corneo Colosseum gives you shorter, more reliable clears with your current party, use that instead. The sources support all three as repeatable post-game options, while the claim that one is always fastest remains unproven.
