To factory reset an accessible Galaxy tablet, open Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset, review what will be deleted, then confirm. Back up anything you need first: a factory reset erases personal data stored on the tablet. If you cannot use Settings, use Samsung’s recovery instructions for your exact model; remote erasure is possible only when the required account and device settings are in place.

Choose the right kind of reset

A factory data reset is for wiping the tablet before giving it away or starting over. It is not the same as resetting preferences or network connections. Samsung also provides narrower options such as Reset all settings and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or mobile network resets; these reset selected configurations while preserving apps and personal data.

Option Best fit Requirements or limits Data effect
Factory reset in Settings The tablet is accessible and you can navigate its menus Menu labels vary by model and software. A screen-lock credential or Samsung account password may be requested. Deletes personal data stored on the tablet.
Recovery-menu reset Settings cannot be used Button combinations and recovery labels vary by model; follow Samsung’s instructions for that exact tablet. Wipes user data.
SmartThings Find or Samsung Find erase The tablet is lost or cannot be operated directly Account and remote-finding setup must already be in place; power and network conditions affect availability. Deletes data; remote management through the service ends once erased.
Settings or network reset The issue concerns preferences or connectivity rather than the whole tablet Available options and names vary. Preserves apps and personal data, while resetting selected settings.

Prepare before erasing

  • Back up what you want to keep. Check that the backup is complete and that you can access it. A factory reset does not itself create a backup.
  • Decrypt an encrypted microSD card first, if applicable. Samsung warns that an encrypted card may not be readable after the reset. This matters only if your model and card setup use encryption.
  • If handing the tablet to someone else, remove your Google account first when possible. Google device protection may otherwise ask for an account previously registered on the tablet during setup.
  • Plan for account prompts. A screen lock or signed-in Samsung account may require credentials during the Settings reset. Samsung says network access is needed to log out of a Samsung account in that reset flow.

Reset a working tablet from Settings

  1. Open Settings → General management → Reset → Factory data reset.
  2. Review the screen’s list of data and accounts affected by the reset.
  3. Tap Reset, then confirm with Delete all if prompted. Enter requested lock-screen or account credentials.
  4. Wait for the tablet to restart to its initial setup screen.

Samsung’s U.S. guide uses this menu path, but names and placement can differ across models and software versions. If the menu looks different, search Settings for “Factory data reset” or consult the instructions for your model. The guide’s screenshots were made on a Galaxy S24+ running Android 15 and One UI 7; that is screenshot context, not a promise that a Galaxy tablet uses the same layout.

Use recovery mode when Settings is unavailable

Recovery mode is an alternative when you cannot navigate Settings. Samsung’s button sequence and recovery screen wording vary by tablet, so do not assume a combination found for another Galaxy model applies to yours. Find Samsung’s official recovery instructions for your exact model, follow its button sequence, and select Wipe data/factory reset (or the equivalent shown on your screen) using the indicated controls. Confirming that option erases user data.

Erase a lost or inaccessible tablet remotely

Samsung says SmartThings Find and Samsung Find can be accessed through their websites or a Galaxy device. Remote finding requires a Samsung account on the tablet and the relevant remote-finding controls enabled. The tablet’s power and network state also affect what the service can do; an offline device may show only its last known location.

  1. Open SmartThings Find or Samsung Find using a website or Galaxy device and sign in to the Samsung account associated with the tablet.
  2. Select the tablet and choose Erase data.
  3. Verify the account as prompted and confirm the erase.

This is not a guaranteed workaround for a locked tablet: the service and required setup must have been available beforehand. Once the erase is complete, remote management through that service is no longer available for the device. When it is set up again, Google device protection may require the Google account previously registered on it.

What to expect during setup after a reset

A reset does not necessarily remove account-protection checks. Google may ask for a previously registered Google account to verify ownership, and Samsung may request Samsung account credentials during the reset flow. If you are preparing a tablet for a new owner, remove the Google account through Settings before resetting whenever you can still access the device.
