Do not treat an AI chatbot’s political answer as proof. Use it to surface claims and search terms, then verify each claim against primary records, the relevant election authority and an independent fact-check. Save the exact wording, identify its date and jurisdiction, open every cited source, and report uncertainty instead of guessing.
The governing rule: a chatbot is a lead, not a verdict
Chatbots generate plausible language from patterns in training data and, in some products, from retrieved pages. They do not establish that a statement is true. OpenAI’s Help Center warns that ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading output, and the House of Commons Library advises treating every factual statement from AI as unverified until it has been thoroughly checked. The Australian Electoral Commission likewise notes that chatbots have a documented history of hallucinating information.
A fluent answer can therefore contain a real statistic beside a fabricated quotation, an outdated voting deadline or a citation that looks genuine but does not support the sentence. Confidence, detail and grammatical polish are presentation features, not evidence. The same rule applies when a chatbot gives a probability, summarizes a poll or names a supposed study.

Define exactly what you are checking
Start by turning the answer into separate propositions. A sentence such as “The bill cut taxes, reduced the deficit and passed unanimously” contains at least three factual claims and one potentially misleading implication. Check each proposition independently rather than accepting or rejecting the whole paragraph.

| Claim type | What it means | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Fact | A statement that can be tested against a record, such as a vote count, date, quotation or law. | Find the primary document and confirm the wording, date, jurisdiction and relevant definitions. |
| Prediction | A forecast about what a candidate, court, legislature or electorate will do. | Label it as a forecast; evaluate the assumptions and evidence, not whether it is already true. |
| Opinion | A judgment about whether a policy or person is good, harmful, fair or effective. | Attribute it to the speaker and separate the value judgment from any factual premises. |
| Advocacy or rhetoric | Language intended to persuade, including slogans, selective comparisons and emotionally loaded labels. | Identify the interests and omitted context; test any factual components separately. |
Preserve the original wording before editing it. A later paraphrase can remove a qualifier such as “according to a campaign,” “as of Tuesday” or “in one state,” changing what must be checked.
A repeatable nine-step workflow
1. Freeze the chatbot output
Save the complete conversation, including your prompt, the answer, the model name or version if displayed, the access date and every citation. A screenshot alone may hide a URL or make later comparison difficult, so keep copied text as well. Record whether the chatbot used a browsing or search mode.
Number each proposition. For every item, write the shortest sentence that could be proven or disproven. Mark the item as fact, prediction, opinion or advocacy. Do not silently correct spelling, names or dates before you begin; those details may reveal the error.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →2. Specify scope before searching
Write down the jurisdiction, office or policy, time period, population and definitions. “Voters can register online” means different things in different countries, states, territories and elections. “Unemployment fell” requires a time window and a definition of unemployment. “The largest increase” requires a comparison group and a denominator.
For an election claim, capture the election date, the level of government, the district or constituency and whether the statement concerns a primary, general, runoff or special election. If any scope element is missing, treat the claim as underspecified and ask whether the missing detail changes the answer.
3. Trace every cited source yourself
Open the exact URL rather than trusting the title or a link preview. Confirm that the page exists, note its author or institution, and record its publication and update dates. Search within the page for the passage the chatbot appears to have used. Read enough surrounding context to determine whether the passage is a quotation, a caveat, a projection or a description of someone else’s claim.

A citation is not verified merely because it leads to a real website. The page may discuss a different country, an earlier election or a different statistic. A fabricated citation can also be built from a real institution’s name and a plausible article title. If the page is missing, the quoted wording is absent or the dates do not fit, label the citation unverified and do not repeat it as evidence.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Prefer primary evidence
Use the record closest to the event. Depending on the claim, that may be an official election-office result, legislation, a court opinion, a government statistical release, a budget document, a legislative roll call, a transcript or an original dataset. Reputable journalism and independent fact-checkers are useful for locating records and explaining context, but inspect the underlying document when it is available.
For a quotation, locate the full transcript, video or official statement. For a spending claim, examine the budget or audited filing rather than a campaign graphic. For a legal claim, read the statute, regulation or court opinion and check which provisions are actually in force.
5. Triangulate consequential claims
Seek a second source that is genuinely independent for claims that could change a person’s vote, eligibility, registration, safety or finances. Independence means more than two pages repeating the same wire story or press release. Trace both reports to their underlying evidence and see whether they rely on the same pollster, spokesperson, dataset or study.
Agreement between independent primary records and a careful fact-check is stronger than agreement among commentary sites. Disagreement is a signal to inspect definitions, dates and methodology rather than to count which side has more links.

6. Check time and place immediately before action
Election information is unusually volatile. Registration deadlines, early-voting periods, polling locations, officeholders, ballot access rules and policy status can change after a chatbot’s training data or a web page’s publication. Recheck these details immediately before you publish guidance or act on it.

Use the election authority for the relevant jurisdiction. The United States Election Assistance Commission provides voter-facing information for the United States; the Australian Electoral Commission is the controlling source for Australian federal elections; and the UK Electoral Commission provides guidance for the United Kingdom. A national agency may not control a state, territory, county or local election, so follow the authority identified for that specific contest.
7. Test rhetoric, comparisons and omissions
Ask what the wording encourages the reader to infer. Does a statistic use a different denominator from the comparison? Does “after” imply “because of”? Is a national average being used to describe one district? Does a campaign claim combine a true number with a selective baseline?
- Identify who benefits if the audience accepts the statement.
- Find the comparison group, baseline and time period.
- Check whether the figure is a count, rate, percentage-point change or percentage change.
- Look for exclusions, margins of error, revisions and missing subgroups.
- Separate correlation or sequence from proof of causation.
- Read the strongest opposing evidence, not only a summary written by an interested party.
Do not call a claim false solely because it is rhetorically framed. Extract the factual kernel, verify it, then explain which implication is unsupported.

Generative tools make convincing fake media cheap and fast. Realistic voice, video, a familiar logo or another chatbot’s confident description does not establish authenticity. Apply a provenance check:
- Locate the earliest available upload and preserve its URL, timestamp and surrounding description.
- Check whether the named person or institution published the same material through an official channel.
- Look for corroborating reporting, event footage, transcripts or attendance records.
- Compare voices, faces, edits, captions and shadows only as clues; visual artifacts are not conclusive proof.
- Seek a direct statement from the person or institution when the consequence is significant.
Report synthetic-media findings with calibrated language. If provenance cannot be established, say that the item is unverified rather than declaring it fabricated on appearance alone.
9. Report the result precisely
A useful fact-check lets another reader reproduce the check. Quote the exact claim, identify who made it and when, state the jurisdiction, give a verdict that matches the evidence, and show the decisive primary record. Explain missing context in plain language and include the date on which the evidence was checked.

Use “unverified” when the evidence is insufficient. “False” is appropriate only when reliable evidence directly contradicts the proposition. “Misleading” fits a technically true statement that omits context necessary to avoid a wrong impression. “Partly true” should identify which component is supported and which is not; it should never be a softer way to avoid specifying the problem.
How to evaluate a chatbot’s sources
Apply the same dimensions to every source, including an official-looking page:
| Dimension | Questions to ask | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence quality | Is this an original record, a documented analysis or an unsupported assertion? | The page repeats a claim without linking to data, law or a transcript. |
| Independence | Was the source produced separately from the other sources? | Multiple articles use identical language or cite the same release. |
| Date and currency | When was it published or updated, and does that date cover the event being checked? | An old deadline or officeholder is presented as current. |
| Jurisdiction | Does the rule or statistic apply to the country, state, district or election at issue? | A national rule is used to answer a local question. |
| Definitions and denominator | Are terms, populations and comparison periods defined? | A percentage lacks its base or mixes registered voters with all adults. |
| Context and completeness | Are caveats, exceptions and relevant counterevidence included? | A single number is presented without methodology or uncertainty. |
| Practical consequence | Could an error change registration, eligibility, polling-place choice or voting behavior? | The claim is shared before the controlling authority is checked. |
Election administration: the official authority controls
When the question is “Can I vote?”, “Where do I vote?” or “When is the deadline?”, do not rely on a chatbot, a campaign, a social-media post or a generic search result. Find the official election authority for the jurisdiction and election. Confirm the registration status, identification rules, accessibility arrangements, early-voting dates, postal-vote requirements and polling-place information there.
Authorities differ by country and sometimes by state, territory, province, county or municipality. A chatbot may merge rules from neighboring jurisdictions or from a previous election. Check the authority’s page immediately before acting, and save the page or instructions you relied on in case the information changes.
For results, distinguish unofficial tallies, certified results, recounts and legal challenges. A live count can change; a certified result has a defined legal status. Ask which stage the chatbot is describing and whether its date precedes certification.
Common chatbot failure modes and how to recover
Fabricated quotations
The model may place a polished sentence in quotation marks and attribute it to a candidate, judge or study. Search the exact phrase, then inspect the full transcript or publication. If no primary record contains it, write that the quotation could not be verified; do not repeat it as though debunking makes it authentic.

Invented or mismatched citations
A link may resolve to a real institution but a different article, or to a page that never existed. Compare the citation’s title, author, date and passage with the chatbot’s sentence. Replace the citation with the underlying primary record when possible. If no supporting record exists, remove the claim.
Outdated rules presented as current
Ask the chatbot for the date and jurisdiction it used, but do not treat its answer as a reliable timestamp. Check the current election authority and any formal notice of changes. State the effective date of the rule in your report.
Blended numbers and definitions
The answer may combine turnout, registration, eligible population and vote share as if they were interchangeable. Recalculate the denominator from the source data and preserve the source’s definition. If the numbers cannot be reconciled, describe the mismatch rather than averaging them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFalse balance
A chatbot may present two assertions as equally supported because both are easy to phrase. Weigh them by evidence quality, not symmetry. An unsupported allegation does not become credible merely because a response lists it beside a documented record.
A worked example without trusting the answer
Imagine a chatbot says, “The new voting law requires photo identification everywhere in the country, and the change caused turnout to fall.” Treat this as at least two claims: what the law requires and what caused turnout to change.
- Freeze the sentence, prompt, model information, access date and citation.
- Specify the country, election and effective date meant by “new” and “everywhere.”
- Locate the enacted law or official regulation for each jurisdiction; do not rely on a summary.
- Check the election authority’s current voter-identification guidance and exceptions.
- Find turnout data for comparable elections and inspect the definitions, revisions and eligible population.
- Look for research that tests causation rather than merely showing that the law and turnout change occurred in sequence.
- Report the results separately. One jurisdiction may require identification while another does not; turnout may have changed for several reasons even if the timing matches.
This method prevents a broad conclusion from hiding multiple local facts and an untested causal claim.
A publication-ready fact-check format
Use a consistent structure so readers can see what was checked:
Claim: [exact sentence, speaker and date]
Scope: [jurisdiction, office or policy, period and definitions]
Verdict: [true, false, misleading, partly true or unverified]
Evidence: [primary record, publication or transcript, with date]
What is missing: [caveat, exception, denominator or competing evidence]
Checked: [your access date]
Replace every bracketed item with specific information before publication; the brackets above are a format example, not text to leave in a finished article. Link to the primary record when a reliable URL is available, and identify the independent fact-check or reporting used to explain it. Never present the chatbot’s own conclusion as the verdict.
Final checklist before you share an answer
- Did you save the exact chatbot wording and split compound sentences into individual propositions?
- Did you label each proposition as fact, prediction, opinion or advocacy?
- Did you record the jurisdiction, office, population, definitions, time period and election date?
- Did every cited URL open, and does its passage support the exact sentence?
- Did you inspect a primary record rather than relying only on commentary?
- Did you test whether your second source is genuinely independent?
- Did you check current election rules with the controlling authority?
- Did you examine denominators, causation, omissions and incentives?
- Did you verify synthetic media through provenance and corroboration?
- Does your verdict match the strength of the evidence, with “unverified” used when necessary?
Following these checks turns a chatbot from an apparent authority into a useful research assistant: it can help you discover what to investigate, while records and accountable institutions determine what you can responsibly claim.
