Fact-check an election claim by matching it to the authority responsible for that election, checking the claim’s exact wording and date, finding the underlying record or full context, and distinguishing unofficial reports from certified results. Voting rules are jurisdiction- and election-specific: a U.S. state office, a UK electoral authority, and India’s Election Commission cannot be treated as interchangeable sources. Before acting on a post, message, video, or campaign statement, verify it against the responsible election office and the relevant election date.
Why election claims need a different fact-checking method
Election information combines local rules, changing deadlines, candidate statements, technical systems, and fast-moving results. A page that was accurate for one election can be wrong for the next. A true rule in one state may be false in another, and a preliminary result can be reported accurately while still not being a certified outcome.
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation warns that publicly available voting information may be inaccurate or deliberately deceptive. Its practical advice is to consider the source, look for official notices from election offices, and verify what you found. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) likewise directs voters to state and local election offices for details such as polling places, hours, and ballot information. USAGov is useful for reaching those offices, but it is a navigation resource rather than a substitute for the office running your election.

Other countries use different authorities and procedures. The UK Electoral Commission discusses campaign material and the use of independent fact-checkers, while India’s Election Commission (ECI) provides its own voter services and guidance on electronic voting machines and voter-verifiable paper audit trails. Use each source only for the jurisdiction and election it covers.

The seven-step verification workflow
- Capture the claim exactly. Save the wording, a screenshot or transcript, the date and time it was posted or said, the speaker or account, and the place and election mentioned. Preserve qualifiers such as “early voting,” “mail ballot,” “primary,” or “runoff.”
- Classify what kind of claim it is. Decide whether it concerns eligibility, registration, voter identification, a deadline, polling location, voting method, a candidate or ballot, counting, certification, voting equipment, or media authenticity. The classification determines which record can answer it.
- Identify the jurisdiction and election. Record the country, state or province, county or municipality, district, election date, and election type. If any of those are missing, treat the claim as incomplete until you can identify them.
- Find the responsible election office. Start with the national or state resource that routes voters to the correct office, then open the specific county, municipal, or national page for the election. Confirm that the page is current and applies to the place and date in question.
- Trace factual assertions to primary evidence. For a candidate or result, locate an official filing, ballot record, public document, full speech, dataset, canvass report, or certification record. A campaign post is evidence of what a campaign said, not independent proof that the statement is true.
- Check context and independent analysis. Find the original version of a photo, video, audio clip, or quotation; check when and where it first appeared; and compare it with independent evidence. Fact-checking organizations can help assess a public claim, but they do not replace the election office for local voting instructions.
- Document and communicate the conclusion. State the jurisdiction and election date, explain what the evidence establishes, link or name the primary source, and say what remains unknown. If the claim could change whether someone votes, provide the official contact or voter-service route rather than only a verdict.

How to verify U.S. voting procedures
Use national resources as directories
For U.S. voters, the EAC and USAGov help you reach the relevant state and local election office. The local office is the authority to consult for your assigned polling place, hours, registration status, ballot options, and election-specific deadlines. Do not rely on a national summary when the question concerns a particular county or city.
Check the page’s election and date
Look for the election name, date, jurisdiction, and a publication or update date. An old “where to vote” page, shared image, or search result may describe a previous election. Enter your own information into the official voter-service tool when available rather than trusting a forwarded screenshot.
Understand provisional ballots
U.S. states differ in when provisional ballots are issued and how they are reviewed. The EAC’s voter FAQs describe the general process but do not replace your state’s instructions. A post claiming that a provisional ballot is never counted, or is always counted automatically, requires a check of the applicable state and local rules.
Separate observation from authority
Rules for observers, poll workers, early voting, mail ballots, and recounts vary among states. A video of a practice in one county is not evidence of a nationwide rule. Verify the claim with the office conducting the election and read the rule for the specific election date.

How to verify UK campaign and election claims
The UK Electoral Commission distinguishes electoral-process information from claims made in campaign material. For a question about a campaign claim’s accuracy or a piece of content’s authenticity, it says readers can consult a fact-checking organization that may already have examined it. That role is different from confirming where and how to vote, which should be checked with the appropriate UK electoral authority.
Separate process facts from persuasion
“The deadline is 5 p.m. on a stated date” is a procedural assertion that needs an official electoral source. “This policy will reduce costs” is an argument or prediction that requires examination of the cited evidence and assumptions. A party logo or candidate name does not make either statement independently reliable.
Check the complete item
For a leaflet, post, or clip, preserve the whole item and its publication date. Cropped text can remove a qualification, and an old campaign image can be reposted as if it were current. Compare the claim with the original document, transcript, or data before accepting a label such as “true” or “false.”

Use Election Commission of India voter services
ECI voter services provide India-specific routes for checking registration, polling location, and candidate information. Its voter guidance addresses direct questions such as “Where do I vote?” and “Who are the candidates?” Use the service, app, or helpline identified by ECI for the relevant election rather than importing a U.S. or UK workflow.

Keep EVM and VVPAT claims in scope
ECI’s EVM and VVPAT FAQ explains the Indian system and its checking processes. Those explanations apply to the equipment and procedures described by ECI; they are not general evidence about voting machines used in another country. When a post makes a technical allegation, identify the jurisdiction and equipment first, then compare it with the authority’s current documentation.
Use myth-versus-reality pages carefully
ECI’s myth-versus-reality material can address recurring claims, but read the underlying explanation and the election context. A short “myth” label is not a reason to generalize the conclusion to a different system, election, or country.
Fact-checking candidate claims without confusing opinion and evidence
Identify the type of statement
- Official fact: whether a candidate filed, qualified, appears on a ballot, or holds an office. Check official records.
- Historical or numerical claim: locate the underlying law, budget, dataset, court record, or other primary document and verify definitions and dates.
- Policy proposal: distinguish what the candidate proposes from what is predicted to happen.
- Opinion or rhetoric: describe it as an argument or characterization rather than a fact that can be proven true or false in the same way.
Read the full statement
Search for the complete speech, interview, transcript, or document. Check whether a quotation was edited, whether “billions” refers to a particular period, and whether the speaker was describing a proposal, an outcome, or a hypothetical. A clipped sentence can be authentic while conveying a false impression.
Follow the evidence chain
Write down the candidate’s source, then open that source rather than relying on a graphic or campaign summary. Check who collected the data, what population it covers, the measurement period, and whether the candidate’s conclusion follows from it. An independent fact-check is strongest when it shows this evidence chain instead of offering only a rating.

Checking viral images, video, audio, and AI content
Find the earliest available version
Record the account that shared the item, then look for an earlier upload, a longer recording, a higher-resolution image, or an original transcript. Compare visible landmarks, weather, clothing, signage, accents, and timestamps with independent records. A repost date is not necessarily the event date.
Do not treat polish as proof
Microsoft’s voter AI-literacy guidance notes that AI can generate convincing fake images, audio, and video. An AI response, a realistic voice, or a professional-looking graphic is not an authority. Check whether the source names the event, supplies supporting records, and is corroborated by people or organizations with direct knowledge.
Use multiple independent confirmations
For an alleged incident at a polling place, look for an official notice, contemporaneous reporting from an independent outlet, and a complete recording or document. Several accounts copying one original post are not independent confirmation. If no reliable source can establish when or where the media was made, label that uncertainty clearly.

Know the three stages
- Reporting: election-night or interim figures released as ballots are processed. They may be unofficial and incomplete.
- Canvassing: the formal process of aggregating and confirming valid ballots, including categories such as mail, early, provisional, and overseas ballots where applicable.
- Certification: the authorized final declaration under that jurisdiction’s rules.
The EAC explains that the canvass “aggregates and confirms every valid ballot cast and counted,” and that reporting, canvassing, and certification take time. Its election-results page is listed as July 30, 2026, but the process described is U.S.-specific. Elsewhere, use the corresponding local canvass and certification records.

Describe status precisely
Use terms such as “unofficial results,” “updated tally,” “canvass in progress,” or “certified result” exactly as the authority uses them. A display showing all precincts reporting can still omit ballots that must be processed or reviewed. Do not call a result final merely because a network graphic, campaign account, or social-media trend has declared a winner.
What to do when sources disagree

If two official pages appear inconsistent, check whether they cover different elections, districts, ballot types, or update times. Contact the election office using the number or email on its official site and retain both pages and their dates. Do not resolve a procedural conflict by choosing the post with the most shares.
How to correct a false or misleading election claim
- Lead with the verified answer. Say what the rule, record, or result establishes, naming the jurisdiction and election date.
- Provide the primary source. Give the official election-office page, filing, canvass, certification record, or full original media so readers can inspect it.
- Explain the mismatch. Identify the wrong date, location, ballot type, missing context, altered media, or unsupported inference.
- Offer an action. Tell readers where to check their own registration, polling place, ballot status, or official result.
- Avoid amplifying the falsehood. Do not use an unsupported claim as a sensational headline or repeat it more than needed to identify what you are correcting.
In the United States, the FBI says suspected election crimes involving intentionally deceptive claims about the time, place, or manner of voting can be reported through the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Follow local reporting channels in other countries. If someone faces imminent danger, contact emergency services rather than treating the matter as an ordinary fact-check.
A practical fact-check worksheet
- Exact claim: Copy the sentence, image text, or spoken words.
- Source: Record the person, organization, account, and original URL or file.
- Posted or stated: Note the date, time, and time zone if known.
- Election scope: Country, state or province, local authority, district, election type, and election date.
- Claim class: Procedure, eligibility, candidate, result, equipment, or media authenticity.
- Primary authority: Name the responsible election office and the current page or record.
- Evidence: Save the full document, transcript, dataset, image, or video used to reach the conclusion.
- Context checks: Note edits, missing sections, repost history, definitions, and whether sources are genuinely independent.
- Conclusion: State what is confirmed, false, misleading, or not established, with the reason.
- Reader action: Give the official route for checking a voter’s own information or reporting a suspected crime.
Final pre-publication checklist for readers and publishers
- Does the claim name the correct country, jurisdiction, election, and date?
- Did you consult the office responsible for that election before giving voting instructions?
- Did you distinguish a candidate’s statement from an independently verified fact?
- Did you inspect the original and complete media rather than a cropped or AI-generated version?
- Did you label election-night figures as unofficial unless the authority has certified them?
- Does the evidence apply to the specific voting equipment and process being discussed?
- Can a reader follow your primary source and verify the conclusion themselves?
- Have you avoided repeating an unsupported claim in a way that spreads it further?
The reliable habit is simple but strict: identify the exact claim, locate the authority for that election, inspect the underlying evidence, and state the limits of what has been established. That process protects voters from procedural deception while keeping candidate and media fact-checks anchored to records rather than confidence or virality.
