Treat every AI-generated podcast script as unverified copy. Break it into individual factual claims, preserve the context around each one, verify each claim against reliable evidence, record the result, and revise the spoken wording so that necessary qualifications remain audible. A fluent script, natural-sounding voice, provenance signal, or detector score is not proof that anything in the script is true.

This workflow works for a fully synthetic draft and for scripts where AI was used only for research, summaries, translations, outlines, or rewrites. It is designed for producers who need an auditable path from a spoken assertion to the evidence supporting it.

What fact-checking an AI podcast script actually means

Fact-checking tests the truth, accuracy, context, and attribution of what the episode says. It is different from asking whether a model wrote the text or whether an audio file contains signs of synthetic generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Factual verification asks whether a claim is supported, contradicted, or still unverified.
  • Provenance records where content came from and how it was transformed.
  • AI detection attempts to classify whether text or audio may have been generated or altered by AI.

Those last two can help with editorial history and disclosure, but neither establishes that a date, statistic, quotation, or explanation is correct. PBS Standards states the principle directly: “Similarly, it is imperative that producers never assume that online materials or generative AI output is truthful or accurate.” Attribute that statement to PBS Standards; it is guidance for PBS producers, not a universal legal rule.

There is no established, directly applicable percentage for factual errors in AI-generated podcast scripts. A detector’s authorship or believability score must not be repurposed as an error rate. NIST’s 2024 text-to-text pilot explicitly separated its evaluation of AI-authorship discrimination and believability from factuality.

The claim-level workflow

Use the following sequence for every episode. Do not wait until the final read-through: errors become harder to locate after a script has been rewritten for rhythm or recorded.

  1. Create a complete claim list.
  2. Preserve the sentence, paragraph, and surrounding context for each claim.
  3. Find evidence and assess why each source is reliable for that particular claim.
  4. Check high-risk details separately.
  5. Apply an appropriate corroboration threshold.
  6. Record the decision and the supporting passage or data.
  7. Revise the script and perform a final spoken-audio check.

Step 1: Build a complete claim list

Mark more than obvious “facts”

Copy every checkable assertion into a working document. Include claims in anecdotes, introductions, transitions, summaries, jokes, scene-setting, descriptions of cause and effect, and lines that appear to be opinion but imply a factual premise. A sentence such as “The policy immediately cut costs” contains at least a policy identity, a time claim, a causal claim, and a measurement claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate one sentence into multiple entries when it contains multiple assertions. “The 2019 study of 10,000 patients found the treatment was safe and reduced hospital stays by 30%” should become separate checks for the study date, sample size, safety conclusion, outcome, and percentage.

Flag claims that require special handling

  • Names, spellings, honorifics, job titles, organizational names, and affiliations.
  • Dates, locations, timelines, time zones, and words such as “first,” “latest,” or “only.”
  • Statistics, percentages, denominators, units, currency, and comparisons.
  • Direct quotations, translations, and paraphrases that could change a speaker’s meaning.
  • Claims about causes, responsibility, intent, health, crime, or financial impact.
  • Breaking-news assertions and allegations that could cause reputational harm.

Use a stable claim ID

Give each entry an ID such as EP04-C017. Keep that ID in the script margin, fact-check sheet, source notes, and any correction log. Stable IDs prevent a source from becoming detached when an editor moves paragraphs or combines two lines.

Step 2: Preserve context before checking

Store the exact generated wording alongside the claim. Add the preceding and following sentences, the speaker or narrator, the intended segment, and the episode date. Context can change a claim’s meaning: a statistic may apply only to a particular population; a quote may include a qualification in the omitted sentence; a comparison may use a different time period or definition.

Podcast fact-checking work describes transcription, annotation of check-worthy claims and contextual errors, and verification as linked tasks. In practice, annotate the context error itself rather than merely marking a sentence “wrong.” Examples include a true number paired with the wrong year, a real quote attributed to the wrong event, or a correct study presented as if it examined a different population.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Find and evaluate evidence

Start with the closest original record

Match the source to the claim. For a law or regulation, look for the official text and relevant agency explanation. For a study, use the paper, data release, or institution’s original statement. For an event, seek contemporaneous records and statements from directly involved authorities. A secondary article can help locate the record, but it should not automatically replace it.

Ask why the source is reliable

For each source, write a short justification: What does this publisher know directly? Is the document dated? Does it show methods, definitions, or a quotation in full? Is the source independent of the person or organization making the claim? PBS guidance asks producers to identify the source for each asserted fact and why that source is reliable. OSCE guidance lists official statements, verified news agencies, academic studies, and corroborated eyewitness accounts as possible evidence, depending on the claim.

Match evidence to the exact wording

A source that supports “sales rose in the second quarter” may not support “the launch caused sales to rise.” A source reporting that a person was “under investigation” does not support saying the person committed an offense. Record the strongest wording the evidence permits, then write the script to that level of certainty.

Step 4: Check high-risk details independently

Names, titles, and organizations

Verify spelling from an authoritative biography, institutional page, filing, or original publication. Check whether a title applied on the date being discussed; a current title may be wrong for a historical event. Confirm that two people with similar names have not been merged by the model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dates and places

Check the event date, publication date, announcement date, and effective date separately. “In 2023” can refer to any of those. Confirm the city, country, venue, and time zone, especially when the script converts an international event into a local broadcast date.

Statistics and units

Recalculate percentages from the stated numerator and denominator when possible. Determine whether a figure is a count, rate, average, median, forecast, or estimate. Preserve units, currency, inflation basis, sample size, and geographic scope. Do not turn a one-time allowance or a promotional figure into a recurring amount. If a source gives a range, keep the range.

Quotes and translations

Locate the original recording, transcript, filing, or publication. Compare the exact words, speaker, date, and surrounding qualification. For a translation, check the original-language wording where possible and have a qualified speaker review ambiguous terms, idioms, negation, and technical vocabulary. Label a paraphrase as a paraphrase; do not use quotation marks for an AI reconstruction.

Step 5: Set a corroboration threshold

Use the level of corroboration that fits the risk and the editorial standard. PBS’s general rule for breaking news or controversial assertions in PBS content is at least two authoritative, independent, on-the-record sources. Present that as PBS guidance, not as a universal requirement for every podcast or a substitute for judgment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Routine, low-risk fact: one strong primary source may be sufficient when the claim is clear and current.
  • Breaking news or controversial assertion: seek two authoritative, independent, on-the-record sources, consistent with the PBS standard.
  • High-impact allegation: require direct documentation, a response from the subject when appropriate, and legal or editorial review under your organization’s policy.
  • Unresolved claim: state the uncertainty, narrow the wording, or remove the claim.

Independence matters. Two articles that copy the same wire report are not two independent confirmations. Note the relationship between sources in the ledger.

Step 6: Keep an auditable claim ledger

A ledger turns checking into a repeatable production record. Retain it with the episode version and update it when narration changes.

Field What to record
Claim ID A stable identifier such as EP04-C017.
Exact script wording The sentence as generated and the current approved version.
Context Surrounding passage, speaker, segment, and intended meaning.
Source Title, publisher, author or issuing body, and publication or update date when available.
Evidence The supporting passage, table, quotation, data point, or timestamp.
Reliability note Why the source is authoritative and how it relates to the claim.
Decision Supported, contradicted, qualified, or not verified.
Action Keep, narrow, attribute, add a caveat, replace, or remove.
Reviewer and date Who checked it and when, including the episode version.

“Not verified” is a valid outcome. It means the claim did not meet your evidence threshold; it does not prove the opposite. Keep the original wording in the record even after deleting it so a later editor does not accidentally restore it.

Step 7: Revise for speech, not just the page

Accuracy can be lost during a rewrite. Keep essential qualifiers audible: population, date, uncertainty, source attribution, and whether a number is an estimate. Replace dense caveats with clear spoken language rather than dropping them.

  • Instead of “The program saved $40 million,” say who reported the estimate, for which period, and whether it is a projection or measured result.
  • Instead of “Scientists proved,” identify the study and describe what it found; most studies support a conclusion under stated conditions rather than proving a universal rule.
  • Instead of presenting an unresolved allegation as fact, attribute it and state the response or lack of confirmation.

After the script is locked, listen to the recorded take while following the approved text. Check that a fast read did not swallow “about,” “according to,” “may,” a date, a decimal point, or a negation. If the audio differs from the approved wording, fact-check the spoken version too.

Handling common AI failure patterns

Confidently invented specifics

Models may supply plausible names, paper titles, quotations, statistics, or links that do not exist. Search for the original record and confirm that the wording appears there. If no credible record exists, remove the detail rather than trying to repair it from memory.

Blended or outdated timelines

A generated paragraph can combine facts from different years. Build a mini timeline with event, announcement, publication, and effective dates. Rewrite with explicit dates instead of relative terms such as “recently” or “at the time.”

Context stripped from numbers

Ask what the denominator is, who was measured, how the sample was selected, and whether the figure is adjusted. A percentage without those details can be technically correct yet misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

False consensus

Words such as “experts agree” require evidence about the breadth and method of that agreement. Name the institutions or authors actually supporting the position, and describe credible disagreement when it changes the listener’s understanding.

Translated or summarized source material

Compare the generated summary with the source’s full passage. Models can reverse a qualification, merge speakers, or turn a conditional statement into an absolute one. Keep the original-language excerpt and the approved translation in the ledger.

What AI detectors and provenance signals can—and cannot—tell you

NIST’s synthetic-content work treats provenance and authentication, labeling, and detection as distinct technical approaches. They can help answer questions about origin or content history; they are not factual sources for the script’s claims.

OpenAI’s official guidance says a detected supported provenance signal indicates an association with supported OpenAI tools. It does not confirm accuracy, unedited status, legal ownership, or correct context. A missing signal does not prove that AI was not used: content may be unsupported, old, transformed, or missing metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use these signals for disclosure and chain-of-custody questions, not as a shortcut around claim verification. Do not approve a script because it sounds human, fails a detector, or carries a provenance marker.

Selecting workflow tools without outsourcing judgment

No particular commercial product is established as the best choice. Evaluate any tool against your process rather than a marketing score. Useful capabilities include:

  • Accurate transcript import and export with speaker labels and timestamps.
  • Claim-level annotation that preserves the surrounding passage.
  • Fields for source title, publisher, date, quotation or data excerpt, and reliability notes.
  • Traceability from the final spoken line to its evidence.
  • Version history, reviewer assignments, and an exportable correction log.
  • Support for multiple languages and side-by-side original and translated text when needed.

Automation can identify candidate claims or duplicate wording, but a person must decide whether evidence supports the exact assertion. A citation attached to a paragraph is not enough when that paragraph contains several independent claims.

A worked example

Suppose an AI draft says: “A 2022 study of 10,000 workers proved that the four-day week raises productivity by 30%.” Create separate claim entries for the year, study identity, sample size, population, causal wording, productivity definition, and 30% figure.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Locate the original study and confirm its publication year.
  2. Check whether the participants were workers, companies, or another population, and whether the sample was 10,000.
  3. Read the methods and outcome definition: productivity may mean self-reported output, measured output, or an employer estimate.
  4. Determine whether the design can support “raises” or only an association, and whether 30% is an average, a subset, or a projected result.
  5. Rewrite to the strongest supported statement, such as an attributed finding with its population, period, measure, and limitation. Remove “proved” if the evidence does not justify it.

The ledger should retain the original sentence, the study passage, each discrepancy, and the approved replacement. The listener should hear the narrower claim, not the model’s more dramatic version.

Final pre-publication checklist

  • Every factual assertion has a claim ID and a recorded decision.
  • Each source is identified by title, publisher, and date when available, with a reason it is reliable.
  • Names, titles, dates, places, numbers, units, quotes, and translations received separate checks.
  • Breaking-news and controversial assertions meet the selected corroboration threshold; any PBS standard is labeled as PBS guidance.
  • Unverified claims are removed or clearly presented as uncertain.
  • Necessary qualifiers survive the rewrite and the recorded performance.
  • Provenance or detector results are used only for origin and disclosure questions, never as proof of truth.
  • The final audio matches the approved script, including negations, numbers, attributions, and dates.

The dependable habit is simple but non-negotiable: verify what the episode says, not how convincingly an AI system says it. A claim-by-claim record lets another editor reproduce the decision, correct the audio quickly, and explain exactly why each assertion remains in the show.
