You can inspect a PDF’s font list with Poppler’s pdffonts, then use MuPDF’s mutool extract to extract embedded font resources. Extraction does not guarantee a complete, installable font: the PDF may contain only a subset, and the font’s license may restrict use to viewing or printing.

Check which fonts the PDF contains

Install Poppler utilities if they are not already available, open a terminal in the folder containing the PDF, and run:

pdffonts document.pdf

Replace document.pdf with the PDF’s filename or path. Poppler’s pdffonts manual describes the command as an inventory tool. Its output includes font names, types, encodings, embedding and subset flags, Unicode-map status, and PDF object IDs.

  • emb: A yes value indicates that the font is embedded; no means the PDF does not contain that font program.
  • sub: A yes value indicates that the embedded font is a subset rather than the full font.
  • uni: Indicates whether a ToUnicode map is present. This is useful information about text mapping, not proof that a font can be extracted as a complete, reusable font.

If a font is not embedded, there is no embedded font program for this workflow to extract. The PDF viewer may use a substitute font to display it; Adobe explains embedding and substitution in its PDF font documentation.

Extract embedded font resources

With MuPDF installed, run this command in a terminal:

mutool extract document.pdf

MuPDF documents mutool extract as extracting images and embedded font resources from a PDF. See the MuPDF command reference. Replace the filename with your PDF’s path. The command may create multiple output files; a PDF can contain several fonts, font subsets, or formats.

This is resource extraction, not a promise that every output will be a complete font file that can be installed or used in other software. Do not use pdfdetach for this task: it extracts file attachments, not the PDF’s font resources.

Check what was extracted

Compare the pdffonts inventory with the files produced by MuPDF. Font names and PDF object IDs can help you identify outputs, although output filenames and formats may not correspond to familiar font-family names. If sub was yes, the PDF contains only a subset of the font data: Adobe describes subset embedding as including the characters used in the document, rather than the complete font.

Consequently, a subset may render the PDF correctly while lacking characters needed for other text. Even a full embedded font should be checked for its actual format and permitted use before you try to install or reuse it.

Check the font license before using the file elsewhere

Embedding a font in a PDF does not grant permission to install, redistribute, or use the extracted data in new documents. Adobe’s PDF Reference, section 5.8, “Embedded Font Programs”, states: “A font program may allow embedding for the sole purpose of viewing and printing the document but not for creating new or modified text that uses the font (either in the same document or in other documents).” Review the license for the specific font and intended use before installing or reusing an extracted file.

Which tool should you use?

Need Tool What it does
Find font names and embedding status pdffonts document.pdf Lists font properties; it does not save the font program.
Extract embedded font resources mutool extract document.pdf Extracts embedded font resources and images; output may be a subset or a format unsuitable for a particular use.
Manage embedding or substitution when creating PDFs Adobe Acrobat documentation Describes PDF font workflows; available controls depend on the Acrobat version and workflow.

Adobe says a font can be embedded only when the font vendor’s setting permits it. See Adobe’s font embedding and substitution guidance. If the font is missing or prohibited from embedding, extracting it from that PDF cannot recover it.
