To help a phone battery age more slowly, reduce avoidable heat and use your phone’s built-in charging optimization if available. You do not need to avoid every full charge: overnight charging is safe for iPhone according to Apple, while settings such as optimized charging or an optional 80% limit address the separate goal of spending less time at a full charge. The exact features and menu paths depend on your phone model and software version.
Why charging habits affect battery life
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries chemically age and gradually hold less charge. Apple explains that an iPhone battery’s chemical age reflects more than the time since it was made; temperature history and charging patterns also matter. The practical aim is not to follow a rigid ritual, but to avoid unnecessary heat and choose charge settings that suit your daily needs.
10 charging habits that can help
1. Turn on optimized or adaptive charging
If your phone offers an adaptive charging feature, enable it. Apple’s Optimized Battery Charging delays completing a full charge until closer to when you are likely to need the phone. Google says Pixel Adaptive Charging can finish charging to 100% about an hour before you unplug after a long or overnight charge. Availability and behavior vary by model. Apple’s iPhone battery guidance and Google Pixel battery guidance describe their respective features.
2. Consider an 80% limit if your phone supports it
A lower charge limit can reduce how long a battery spends fully charged, but it also means less runtime between charges. Google offers an 80% charge limit on Pixel to help extend battery lifespan. Use it if the reduced daily capacity works for you; it is not a universal requirement for every phone.

3. Keep the phone away from hot surroundings while charging
Do not charge a phone in a hot car, direct sun, or another place where it can become excessively warm. Apple advises iPhone users to avoid using or charging their device in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), which it says can permanently reduce battery lifespan. This is Apple-specific guidance, not a universal temperature limit for every phone. Apple describes 16–22°C (62–72°F) as an ideal ambient range for iPhone performance.
4. Respond to unusual or persistent heat
A phone may become warm during charging, and a small temperature increase alone does not establish battery damage. If it becomes unusually hot or stays hot, pause charging and move it to a cooler, ventilated place. Check the manufacturer’s instructions if the heat persists or recurs. Apple notes that a battery warms as it charges; Samsung lists unsuitable equipment and objects in a wireless charging setup among possible causes of Galaxy device heating.

5. Choose an adapter compatible with your model
Use an adapter that the phone manufacturer identifies as compatible. Google lists compatible USB-C power adapters for Pixel phones; that recommendation does not establish compatibility or an ideal wattage for other models. A higher-wattage charger is not shown by these cited sources to improve battery lifespan.
6. Use suitable cables and charging equipment
Samsung recommends authentic Samsung charging cables and plugs for Galaxy devices. Follow your own phone maker’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming that every third-party accessory is harmful or that one brand’s equipment advice applies to all phones.

7. Clear objects from between a wireless charger and phone
When charging wirelessly, keep metal, magnets, cards, and other foreign objects out from between the charger and phone. Samsung says these objects may contribute to a Galaxy device heating up during wireless charging.
8. Do not routinely drain the battery to zero
Do not make a full discharge a regular “calibration” ritual. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a need for routine full discharges. Google does note that a Pixel may need a full charge every tenth cycle for accurate battery-capacity readings; that is a specific Pixel measurement note, not a general instruction to drain other phones.

9. Do not force a 20–80% rule if you need more runtime
A lower maximum charge is an optional longevity trade-off, not a rule that should take priority over having enough battery for the day. If your phone offers a charge limit, choose it based on your actual use and access to a charger.

10. Recheck charging settings when your phone or software changes
Charging features and menu paths differ by brand, model, and operating-system version. After changing phones or updating software, look in the battery or charging settings and confirm which optimization options are available and enabled. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions for your specific model rather than relying on a path written for another device.

Is it bad to charge your phone overnight?
Not necessarily. Apple says iPhone automatically stops charging when full, making it safe to leave connected overnight; charging resumes if the charge falls below 95%. Its Optimized Battery Charging feature reduces the time an iPhone spends fully charged by finishing nearer the time it is expected to be needed. Google says Pixel Adaptive Charging can delay reaching 100% until about an hour before the expected unplug time. These are manufacturer-specific features, so check what your phone supports.
Safety and battery-aging preferences are different questions: being safe to leave connected does not mean every phone has the same charging optimization, and a full charge may be useful when you need maximum runtime.
Which charging setting should you choose?

Apple and Google describe different tools; neither option is established here as universally superior. Choose according to your phone’s available settings, how much runtime you need, and the conditions where you charge.
