To extend a brushless tool battery’s useful life, control three things: storage conditions, charging practice, and workload. Store the pack as its manufacturer specifies, keep it cool and dry, use the approved charger, avoid deliberate deep discharge, and reduce unnecessary heat and load. Runtime on one charge and the number of years a battery remains useful are related but different outcomes; the practices below address both.
Battery life has two meanings
Runtime is how long the tool works between charges. It changes with the material, applied load, technique, temperature, battery capacity and age. Service life is how long the pack continues to provide useful capacity over many charge cycles and years. A brushless motor can use energy efficiently, but it cannot stop lithium-ion cells from aging.
Manufacturers publish platform-specific limits rather than one rule that applies to every cordless tool. Identify the exact battery and charger model, then treat its manual as the controlling source for charge level, temperature, storage and inspection requirements.
Start by identifying the complete platform
Before changing your routine, record the tool model, battery model, charger model and whether the battery is removable or integrated. Two packs that slide into apparently similar tools may use different electronics, charging limits or communication protocols. A battery’s voltage, connector and physical fit are not enough to establish compatibility.

Keep the manual or the manufacturer’s support page with the tool. Look specifically for sections titled storage, charging temperature, transport, cleaning, fault indications and disposal. If a percentage or temperature range is not stated, do not substitute a number from another brand. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center instead.
Store batteries at the charge level your platform specifies
Long-term storage is different from preparing for a day’s work. STIHL tells users to begin work with a fully charged battery, while its storage guidance recommends a partial charge. Those instructions serve different purposes and are not contradictory: a full pack maximizes immediate runtime, whereas a partial charge is the maker’s storage recommendation for its products.
STIHL examples
- STIHL’s 2024 support guidance recommends storing its batteries at 40–60% charge.
- STIHL USA gives separate guidance for product context: removable batteries at 40–80%, and tools with integrated batteries at 40–60%.
- Because these ranges differ by product context, do not copy them as a universal lithium-ion rule. Use the range printed in your own manual.
The different STIHL figures illustrate why a generic “always store at 50%” rule is unreliable. The correct percentage can depend on the battery design, whether it remains inside a product and the instructions issued for that product line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical storage routine
- Remove the pack from the tool unless the product instructions specifically require an integrated battery to remain installed.
- Set the charge to the manufacturer’s stated storage range. If the manual does not state a percentage, contact the maker rather than guessing.
- Put the battery in a dry, shaded location away from heaters, vehicles baking in the sun and freezing exposure.
- Keep terminals away from keys, screws and other conductive objects. A storage case can organize packs, but it does not increase capacity or halt aging; check that the case fits and prevents terminal contact.
- Store batteries where children cannot access them, and inspect the pack before putting it away.
- Label packs if you own several platforms, so a battery is not accidentally connected to the wrong charger or tool.
For storage lasting several weeks or months, check the pack periodically according to the manual. Self-discharge and the tool’s own electronics can reduce the charge while the battery sits. Do not repeatedly top up a pack simply because a calendar reminder says to do so; use the maker’s specified procedure and keep the pack out of service if it shows a fault.
STIHL describes a general storage range of -10 to +50°C for its batteries while recommending more moderate conditions and directing users to the product instructions. That range is STIHL-specific, not a safe default for every platform.
Control heat, cold and moisture
Temperature affects both charging safety and available runtime. Bosch’s cordless-tool guidance identifies 15–25°C as the optimal battery-performance range. This is Bosch guidance for its products, not a universal storage or operating limit.
- Keep packs dry and out of direct sunlight.
- Do not charge a battery that is hot from heavy cutting, drilling or sawing until the manufacturer’s instructions say it is cool enough.
- Do not bring a frozen pack directly into charging. Let it reach the temperature range specified by the maker.
- Use only the charger’s stated environmental limits. STIHL Canada, for example, states that its batteries can be charged between +5°C and +40°C; that limit applies to STIHL products.
Repeated heat exposure accelerates wear, while cold can temporarily reduce output and runtime. A cold battery may recover some performance after warming, but warming does not repair permanent capacity loss.

A battery left in a closed vehicle can become far hotter than the surrounding air. Move packs into a shaded, ventilated place before use, and never treat a vehicle glove box, windowsill or metal toolbox in direct sun as a storage cabinet. In winter, keep a spare pack within the manufacturer’s permitted range rather than placing a frozen pack on a radiator or other direct heat source.
Moisture is another avoidable risk. If condensation forms when a cold pack is brought indoors, allow it to dry naturally before connecting it to a tool or charger. Keep terminals clean and dry, and do not wrap a warm battery in an airtight covering that traps heat.

Charge with compatible equipment
Use the charger and battery family approved for the tool. Electronic communication among the pack, charger and tool can be part of the safety system. DEWALT recommends authentic DEWALT batteries, and Makita warns that non-genuine packs may defeat communication between battery, charger and tool. The same principle applies across platforms: physical fit alone does not prove electrical or software compatibility.
A safe charging sequence
- Inspect the pack, contacts and charger for damage, contamination or moisture.
- Confirm that the charger is intended for that exact battery family and voltage.
- Place the charger on a stable, ventilated surface away from flammable materials.
- Connect the battery without forcing it. If an indicator reports a fault, follow the manual instead of repeatedly reinserting the pack.
- After charging, follow the platform’s instructions for removal or storage; do not assume every charger is designed for indefinite connection.
Should you leave a battery on the charger?
There is no universal instruction for every cordless-tool platform. Follow the charger and battery manual. STIHL says its battery-management system protects against overcharging, but that brand-specific statement does not establish a rule for other products. If the manual does not explicitly describe storage on the charger, remove the pack after charging and store it as directed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fast charging and lifespan
A faster charger may reduce downtime, but the available guidance does not establish that fast charging extends battery lifespan. Choose a compatible charger for the platform and observe its temperature requirements rather than buying speed as a longevity feature. If a fast charge leaves the pack unusually hot, allow it to cool as directed before using or storing it.
Avoid deliberate deep discharge
Lithium-ion packs do not need to be run completely flat to prevent a memory effect. Makita specifically advises users not to allow its packs to go completely dead. Battery-management electronics may shut a pack down before the cells reach a damaging voltage, but the cutoff behavior and recovery procedure vary.
- Recharge when the tool indicates low battery instead of repeatedly forcing it to stop.
- Do not store a pack at zero charge for months.
- If a pack has entered a protective shutdown, use the maker’s approved charger and recovery instructions; do not improvise with another power source.
- Never connect cells directly, bypass a protection circuit or use a homemade adapter to revive a pack.
Stopping when the tool signals low charge also makes runtime more predictable. A battery that is repeatedly driven to automatic cutoff may spend more time hot and under high load than one recharged during a planned pause.
Improve runtime on every charge
Match capacity and tool to the job
Use the battery capacity and form factor recommended for the tool and task. A higher-capacity pack can provide more energy, but it may add mass, alter balance and be incompatible with another platform. Select by the manufacturer’s compatibility chart, not by connector appearance alone.
Balance runtime against handling. A heavier pack can make an overhead drill, hedge trimmer or saw harder to control, causing slower work and more fatigue. For short tasks, a smaller approved pack may be the practical choice; for sustained cutting or sanding, the maker may recommend a higher-capacity model. Do not assume the largest pack is automatically the best or safest option.
Reduce unnecessary load
- Use the correct blade, bit, disc or accessory for the material.
- Keep cutting edges sharp and accessories clean.
- Let the tool’s speed do the work instead of forcing it through material.
- Use the correct mode or speed setting; maximum speed is not automatically the fastest way to finish a task.
- Clear dust and chips from cooling openings before they restrict airflow.
- Support or secure the workpiece so the tool is not fighting movement or binding.
Bosch notes that material, applied load, working method and ambient temperature influence runtime. Its longest-runtime figures are typically measured under no-load conditions, so they should not be treated as a promise for cutting, sanding or drilling on a job site.
When planning a job, use published runtime figures only as a comparison under their stated conditions. Record how long a known battery lasts on your own material and accessory. That personal baseline is more useful than a no-load number when deciding how many charged packs to bring.

Keep cooling paths clear
Blocked vents can let a battery and tool overheat during use or charging. Before work, brush debris away from the tool’s intake and exhaust openings without pushing contamination deeper into the housing. Stop if the tool or battery becomes unusually hot, and follow the manual’s cool-down procedure.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not cover vents with gloves, clothing or a bag while the tool is running. In dusty work, clean the exterior at breaks and inspect the openings again before charging. Cooling problems are both a runtime issue and a safety warning.
Brushless motors: what they do and do not change
Brushless motors eliminate mechanical brushes and can be described by a manufacturer as energy-efficient and nearly wear-free. That may reduce motor maintenance and, in some tasks, energy consumption. It does not guarantee a fixed runtime, prevent cell aging or make every brushless tool more efficient than every brushed design.
Runtime still depends on motor and electronic design, battery capacity, load, technique, temperature and battery condition. The available manufacturer guidance does not support a universal claim that brushless construction alone makes a battery last longer over its entire service life.
A brushless tool can still overheat if it is forced, operated with a dull accessory or used with blocked vents. Treat the motor’s efficiency as one part of the system, not as permission to exceed the tool’s rating or ignore battery-care instructions.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Inspect the pack before every use
Do not use a battery that is cracked, dented or swollen. Damage can expose cells or compromise the pack’s protective electronics.
- Look for a split case, deep impact mark, bulge, leaking material, burnt smell or damaged terminals.
- Check that contacts are clean and dry; do not scrape them with metal tools.
- Stop using a pack that becomes abnormally hot, vents smoke or behaves erratically.
- Isolate a damaged pack from conductive objects and follow the manufacturer’s disposal or service instructions. Do not open the housing or attempt a cell-level repair.
Makita’s care guidance says to allow a hot battery to cool before charging. Apply that instruction in its stated Makita context, and use the corresponding rule for another manufacturer’s pack.
Inspection also applies after a drop, water exposure or transport incident. A pack can look normal while its internal protection has been affected, so report questionable damage to the maker or an authorized service provider rather than testing it by placing it on a charger.
How to diagnose a sudden runtime drop
Runtime is low only in cold weather
Bring the battery and tool into the maker’s permitted temperature range, then retest with the same accessory and material. Cold can reduce temporary output. If capacity remains poor after the pack has warmed, check its age and charge history.

The tool stops under load
Check for a blocked vent, a dull or incorrect accessory, excessive feed pressure or material beyond the tool’s rating. Try a known-good compatible battery. If the problem follows one pack, have that pack evaluated rather than repeatedly forcing the tool to restart.
The pack will not charge
Confirm that the charger is approved for the exact battery family, inspect contacts for contamination and allow a hot or cold pack to reach the permitted charging range. Do not bypass a charger’s fault indication. Persistent faults require the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
The battery is swollen or physically damaged
Remove it from service immediately. Do not charge, disassemble, puncture or place it in household waste. Follow the maker’s hazardous-battery return or recycling instructions.
One tool drains the pack much faster than another
Compare the tasks before blaming the battery. A saw cutting dense material and a drill making small pilot holes impose very different loads. Use the same accessory and material for a controlled comparison, clear both tools’ vents and verify that each tool is rated for the battery. If the difference persists, seek service for the tool or pack.
What capacity loss should you expect?
STIHL states that self-discharge causes approximately 1–3% capacity loss per year for its battery products. STIHL does not present that figure as a universal annual aging rate for every brand, chemistry or usage pattern, and it is not independent comparative testing. Actual useful life depends on temperature exposure, charge history, workload, storage and the specific pack.
Track practical performance rather than relying on a calendar estimate: use the same tool, accessory and task occasionally and note how long a fully charged pack operates. A steady, substantial decline, overheating or a physical defect is a reason to replace the pack with a genuine, approved model for the exact platform.
Do not judge a battery by one unusually short session. Cold conditions, a binding accessory, a heavier material or a blocked vent can all reduce runtime temporarily. Look for a repeatable decline under comparable conditions before deciding that ordinary aging has made replacement necessary.
Quick checklist
- Read the battery and charger manuals before choosing a storage percentage or temperature limit.
- Store long-term at the maker’s specified partial charge, in a dry, shaded, moderate location.
- Charge only with the compatible manufacturer-approved charger.
- Let hot packs cool as directed; stay within the stated charging temperature.
- Do not deliberately drain the pack completely or leave it empty for months.
- Keep vents clear and match the accessory, speed and feed pressure to the task.
- Inspect for cracks, dents, swelling, heat damage and contaminated terminals.
- Replace damaged or exhausted packs with the exact approved battery family.
Choosing a replacement or storage accessory
If runtime has become inadequate or the case is damaged, buy a genuine replacement identified by the tool’s make, model and battery platform. Capacity, mass, balance and replacement availability matter alongside compatibility. A case is useful for organization and terminal protection, but no case can restore lost cell capacity. Verify fit and keep conductive objects away from exposed contacts.
When comparing two compatible packs, use practical axes: stated capacity for the task, weight and balance, charging requirements, manufacturer storage guidance and the availability of an approved replacement. Avoid choosing solely on a marketing runtime figure measured under no load. Likewise, a faster charger is a convenience choice, not proof of longer battery life.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I store lithium-ion batteries correctly?
Follow the exact battery and tool manual. Store the pack dry, out of direct sunlight and away from conductive objects at the manufacturer’s specified charge level. STIHL’s cited support guidance recommends 40–60% for its batteries, while STIHL USA gives 40–80% for some removable-battery products and 40–60% for integrated-battery tools. Those figures are platform-specific, not universal.
Should I start work with a full battery?
Usually follow the manufacturer’s preparation guidance. STIHL says to begin work with a fully charged pack, while its long-term storage guidance recommends a partial charge. A full charge is for immediate runtime; a partial charge is for storage.
Should I leave the battery on the charger?
There is no universal rule. Follow the charger and battery manual. STIHL says its battery-management system protects against overcharging, but that statement applies to STIHL products and does not establish instructions for every brand. If continuous connection is not expressly covered, remove the pack after charging and store it as directed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I run the battery completely flat?
No. Makita advises against allowing its packs to go completely dead. Recharge when the tool indicates low charge, and follow the maker’s instructions if protective shutdown occurs. Do not bypass the charger or attempt an improvised recovery.
Does a brushless tool make the battery last longer?
Brushless motors may use energy efficiently and require less brush maintenance, but they do not prevent lithium-ion aging or guarantee a fixed runtime. Load, technique, temperature, battery capacity, tool design and battery condition still determine performance.
What temperature is best for battery performance?
Bosch identifies 15–25°C as an optimal performance range for its cordless tools. Use that as Bosch-specific guidance, not a universal limit. Charging and storage limits differ by platform; for example, STIHL Canada states +5°C to +40°C for charging its batteries.
How can I tell whether a battery needs replacement?
Compare runtime on the same tool, accessory and material over repeated sessions. Persistent, substantial loss of capacity, abnormal heat, fault indications, swelling, cracks or dents justify stopping use and contacting the manufacturer or replacing the pack with a genuine model for the exact platform.
Is a higher-capacity battery always better?
No. It may provide more energy, but it can add weight, change balance and be incompatible with a tool or charger. Choose from the manufacturer’s compatibility information and match the pack to the task.
Can a storage case extend battery life?
A case can organize packs and protect terminals from conductive objects, but it cannot restore capacity or stop cell aging. Check that it fits the battery and keeps contacts separated from keys, screws and other metal objects.
The Bottom Line
Use the battery maker’s instructions as the final authority: store at the specified partial charge, keep the pack dry and within its temperature limits, charge only with approved equipment, avoid deliberate deep discharge, and reduce heat and load during work. Inspect every pack, and retire any battery that is damaged or no longer delivers useful runtime.
