To get more battery life with a high-refresh-rate display, lower its fixed refresh rate when smooth motion is not important, or enable an adaptive refresh option if your device supports one. The exact setting depends on your device. A lower rate can reduce display power use, but the available official guidance does not establish a universal number of extra hours or a percentage gain.
Choose the refresh-rate mode that fits what you’re doing
A higher fixed refresh rate can make scrolling and motion look smoother, but it can also use more power. Microsoft lists lowering the refresh rate as a Windows battery-saving adjustment, and Samsung says its High mode uses more battery than Standard mode.
- Prioritize battery: choose a lower fixed rate, such as 60 Hz where available.
- Prioritize smoothness: use a fixed High setting if you want the display to stay at its supported high rate.
- Balance both: use Adaptive or Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) when your device supports it. These modes can raise the rate for smoother motion and lower it for less demanding activity.
These choices depend on compatible hardware and software. The setting’s name, supported rates, and behavior can vary by model, resolution, operating system, driver, and app.
Change the refresh rate in Windows
Set a lower fixed rate
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the display you want to change if more than one is listed.
- Choose a lower refresh rate from the available options. The list varies by display.

Enable Dynamic Refresh Rate on supported Windows 11 devices
In Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, look for Dynamic Refresh Rate and turn it on if the option is available. DRR requires a variable-refresh-rate display that supports at least 120 Hz. It is not available in Windows 10. Microsoft says DRR adjusts refresh rate according to activity, aiming to preserve smoothness when needed and save power during less demanding use. Search Settings for Motion smoothness. Samsung’s available choices on supported phones and tablets are Standard, High, and Adaptive:

- Standard: sets the display to 60 Hz and is Samsung’s battery-priority option.
- High: locks some models to 120 Hz and others to 90 Hz; Samsung says it uses more battery.
- Adaptive: changes the refresh rate dynamically, up to the device’s supported maximum, which can be 120 Hz on supported devices.
Options and interactions with resolution vary by model. Samsung also says Power saving mode sets the display to Standard. For model-specific details, see Samsung’s Motion smoothness instructions.

Check the manufacturer’s display or power settings for a lower fixed rate or an adaptive mode. On many Windows laptops, the refresh-rate selector is in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, but the rates shown depend on the display and device.

Some MSI notebooks offer Display Power Saver, which lowers refresh rate when the AC adapter is disconnected. MSI notes that availability depends on the notebook model and support for a high-refresh panel; devices without the feature may not show it. See MSI’s Display Power Saver guidance and its laptop battery-runtime guidance. If you cannot find a relevant option, consult the instructions for your specific device rather than assuming every high-refresh display supports the same modes.

The direction of the effect is clear in the cited manufacturer guidance: lowering a fixed refresh rate can reduce display power use, while a high fixed setting can use more. However, the official sources cited here do not quantify a generalizable runtime gain from changing refresh rate. The actual result depends on the device and how it is used, so no specific percentage or extra-hours estimate is justified.
