You can usually gain more usable time from an Android tablet without disabling the apps and alerts you depend on. Start with the display, identify which apps are actually consuming power, and then apply background, syncing, or connectivity restrictions only where their side effects are acceptable. Every manufacturer changes menu names, so search Settings for Battery when a path below does not match your tablet.
The settings below are reversible. They do not promise a fixed number of extra hours: Android tablets, battery age, screen type, signal strength, software versions, and workload all affect the result.
Use the least disruptive changes first
The display is active whenever you are reading, watching, browsing, or using an app. A slightly lower brightness and a shorter screen timeout reduce that activity while leaving app behavior, notifications, and network access unchanged.
Lower brightness to a comfortable level
Open Settings and look for Display, Brightness, or Brightness level. Move the slider down until text remains easy to read in the current room. Automatic or adaptive brightness can be convenient, but it may raise the backlight in bright surroundings; if your tablet offers a manual slider, set it deliberately when you need maximum runtime.

Do not make the screen so dim that you strain to read. Eye strain encourages you to raise brightness again and does not produce a practical benefit. A comfortable setting that you leave in place is more useful than an extreme setting you immediately undo.
Shorten screen timeout without interrupting normal use
In Settings, search for Screen timeout, Sleep, or Screen timeout duration, usually under Display. Choose the shortest period that does not turn the screen off while you are reading or following a recipe. Samsung Galaxy guidance gives 15 seconds as an example and identifies 30 seconds as its default on some models; those are device-specific examples, not universal Android defaults.
A 15-second timeout can be irritating when you pause to think, while a several-minute timeout leaves the display lit when you walk away. Adjust it to your actual use rather than selecting the smallest value automatically.
Find the apps causing the drain
Before restricting background activity, inspect the tablet’s battery-use report. It is more effective to correct an unusually busy app than to reduce every app’s ability to refresh.
Open the battery-use list
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, or search Settings for Battery usage.
- Open Battery usage, Battery use by app, or an equivalent entry.
- Review the apps at the top of the list and open an app’s details to see whether its use is mainly while on screen or in the background.
On Pixel Tablet, Google says the list can cover the previous seven days or the period since the last full charge. That window is a diagnostic view; it is not a claim that any particular setting saves a measured percentage.
Interpret unusually high background use
An app that is active while you are using it may simply be doing its intended job. An app with substantial background use when you rarely open it is a better candidate for a change. Check whether it is uploading photos, synchronizing a large library, playing media, using location, or repeatedly reporting an error before assuming the app itself is defective.
Compare the report with your habits. A video app can appear high after a long viewing session without being a problem, whereas a rarely opened app that remains active overnight deserves attention. Look again after a normal day rather than judging from a single unusual session.

Keep important apps optimized and restrict only the rest
Android generally offers an Optimized setting and a more aggressive Restricted setting for individual apps. The wording and location vary by manufacturer and Android version.
Use Optimized for apps you rely on
Open the app’s entry from the battery-use screen and choose Optimized when that option is available. This allows Android to manage background work according to usage patterns while preserving normal operation. Messaging, calendar, email, security, accessibility, backup, and smart-home apps are usually poor candidates for aggressive restriction if you depend on timely updates.
Use Restricted for infrequently used apps
Choose Restricted for an app you seldom use and do not need running between launches. Android may delay its background work, notifications, uploads, or refreshes. The app should still open when you tap it, but it may not behave as usual while closed.
After restricting an app, test the specific feature you care about. If an alert arrives late, a widget stops updating, or an upload waits until you open the app, return that app to Optimized. Change one or two apps at a time so you can identify which setting caused a side effect.
Let Adaptive Battery manage routine decisions
On tablets that provide Adaptive Battery, Android learns your usage patterns and reduces background work for apps you use less often. Pixel Tablet documentation says this automatic management can reduce performance or delay notifications in some situations.
Adaptive Battery is a sensible first choice when you want fewer manual decisions. Leave frequently used and time-sensitive apps in their normal or optimized state, then watch the battery-use report for a few days. If a notification becomes too late or an app feels slow to start, review that app’s battery setting rather than turning off every optimization.
Because learning takes time, do not judge Adaptive Battery immediately after enabling it or after a major change in your routine. A tablet used mostly on weekends may need more time to establish a pattern than one used every day.

Use Battery Saver when delayed activity is acceptable
Battery Saver is a situational mode for extending the charge you have left. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver, or search Settings for Battery Saver. Enable it when you need the tablet to last through travel, a meeting, a power outage, or another period when charging is inconvenient.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGoogle Android Help states: “When Battery Saver is on, it turns on Dark theme and limits or turns off background activity, so some visual effects, certain features, network connections, and apps may experience delays.” On Pixel Tablet, Battery Saver turns off most automatic syncing.
That behavior can postpone email, cloud changes, and other updates. Visual effects may be reduced, network connections can behave differently, and an app that depends on frequent background work may not update until you open it or disable Battery Saver. Turn the mode off when you need normal synchronization and immediate alerts.
Battery Saver is therefore not a replacement for finding a misbehaving app. If one app is responsible for unusual drain, restricting that app selectively preserves more of the tablet’s functionality than leaving the entire device in a reduced-activity mode.
Galaxy tablets: background-usage lists and sleep controls
Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets expose additional controls, but labels and availability vary by model and software version. Samsung’s optimization guidance is based on Android 13, so a newer or older Galaxy may show a different route.
Open Background usage limits
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care (or Device care).
- Tap Battery.
- Open Background usage limits.
Some Galaxy versions let you place apps in lists such as Never sleeping apps, Sleeping apps, or Deep sleeping apps. Use Never sleeping apps for a small number of apps whose background alerts or connections are essential. Every app placed there can continue using power, so do not treat the list as a general exemption list.
Sleeping apps may have background work reduced when you are not using them. Deep sleeping apps are more aggressive: Samsung says they work only when you open them. That makes deep sleep suitable for rarely used games, shopping apps, or one-off utilities, but unsuitable for apps that must notify you while closed.

Check the result after each change
Use the tablet normally after moving an app between lists. Confirm that alarms, messages, downloads, and widgets still work as expected. If a required alert is missing, remove that app from the sleeping or deep-sleep list and use a less restrictive setting.
Change syncing and connectivity only when you accept the trade-off
Sync and radios can consume power, but disabling them broadly removes useful tablet features. Treat these controls as temporary or app-specific choices.
Pause Google Account or individual app sync
On a Pixel Tablet, you can turn off automatic synchronization for the Google Account or for individual Google apps. The exact menu can vary, so search Settings for Account sync or Automatically sync app data. With sync disabled, data does not refresh automatically and some apps may not work properly until you refresh manually or restore syncing.
Pause sync before a long offline period when stale information is acceptable, then turn it back on when you need current mail, calendar, contacts, files, or other cloud data. Disabling sync permanently is a poor way to preserve normal alerts.
Turn off hotspot and tethering when nobody is connected
Hotspot and tethering make the tablet act as a network connection for another device and can keep the radio active. Open Settings > Network & internet or search for Hotspot, then turn it off when no device needs it. Restore it when you need to share the connection.
Stop location-related use when it is not needed
Location can be important for navigation, fitness, family safety, weather, and automation. Instead of cutting location access for every app, review which apps use it and disable location for apps that have no reason to use it. A navigation session, long GPS workout, or location-based automation can legitimately consume more power; the appropriate response is to end the session when finished, not to remove location from services you rely on.

Keep the tablet cool and match the workload to the charge
Google advises keeping devices cool because a hot battery drains faster even while the tablet is idle, and heat can damage the battery. Avoid leaving a tablet in direct sun, on a hot car seat, under bedding, or against a heat-producing charger or computer. If it feels unusually hot, stop the demanding activity and let it cool in a shaded, ventilated place.

Video playback, graphics-heavy games, camera recording, hotspot use, streaming over a weak connection, and long GPS sessions are heavier workloads. They are not activities you must eliminate; use them deliberately when you have enough charge or access to power. A weak cellular or Wi-Fi signal can also make radios work harder, so moving to a stronger signal may help without turning connectivity off.

No official source establishes a universal percentage of runtime gained by any row in this table. Actual results depend on how much of your charge the display, background apps, radios, and processor are using.
A practical sequence that preserves useful features
- Check the battery report. Record the apps with unusually high background use and note whether the screen or background activity dominates.
- Set the display. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and choose a timeout that does not interrupt your normal reading or work.
- Protect essential apps. Leave messaging, calendar, email, security, backup, accessibility, and other time-sensitive tools optimized.
- Restrict one low-priority app. Use Restricted, sleeping, or deep-sleep behavior only for an app you rarely need while it is closed.
- Observe a normal day. Check whether notifications, widgets, uploads, and refreshes still arrive when expected.
- Use Adaptive Battery or Battery Saver according to the situation. Adaptive Battery is the less disruptive automatic option; Battery Saver is for times when delayed activity is acceptable.
- Pause optional sync or connectivity. Turn off account sync, hotspot, or unneeded location only for the period in which stale data or unavailable features will not matter.
- Keep the tablet cool. End heavy sessions when the device becomes hot and avoid heat-trapping surfaces.
What to do when the battery still drains quickly
Install system and app updates
Open Settings > System > Software update, or search for System update, and install available updates. Also open your app store and update apps. Updates can correct background loops, compatibility problems, and battery bugs. Menu names and update timing differ by manufacturer.

Restart the tablet, use it normally, and inspect the battery report again. A restart can clear a stuck process, but it does not replace identifying an app that repeatedly returns to high background use.
Use Safe mode as a diagnostic on Galaxy devices
Samsung support identifies Safe mode as a troubleshooting option. In Safe mode, many downloaded apps are unavailable, which helps distinguish a third-party app problem from a system-level issue. The entry method varies by Galaxy model; consult the on-device power-menu instructions or Samsung support for the exact sequence. If drain improves only in Safe mode, remove or update recently installed apps one at a time rather than deleting everything at once.
Escalate before erasing the tablet
If the tablet remains unusually poor after updates, a restart, display checks, and app-by-app review, contact the manufacturer with the model, Android version, battery-use screenshots, and the circumstances in which drain occurs. A factory reset is an advanced last resort. Google says it removes tablet data and uninstalls apps, so back up photos, files, account data, and any authenticator or app-specific information before considering it.
Set realistic expectations
These steps reduce avoidable activity; they cannot change the tablet’s battery capacity or make a worn battery behave like a new one. A charger or power bank adds charging capacity but does not improve runtime between charges. If the tablet loses charge rapidly while idle, becomes hot without a demanding task, or shuts down unexpectedly, treat that as a support or hardware issue rather than continually tightening settings.
