If by “Amazon Alexa Tablet 8” you mean an Alexa-enabled Amazon Fire HD 8, start by reducing screen use, checking background apps, and enabling the power-saving features available on your model. Amazon’s menu names and feature support vary by generation and Fire OS version, so confirm your exact tablet before following a path. The steps below focus on built-in settings; they do not require buying anything.

First, confirm which Fire tablet you have

“Amazon Alexa Tablet 8” does not identify a specific Fire HD 8 generation. Fire HD 8 models have changed over time, and not every feature or menu is available on every version. Before troubleshooting, check the model information in your tablet’s settings or on the device packaging, then treat menu labels below as a guide rather than a guarantee. Amazon’s Low Power Mode instructions, for example, are labeled for Fire tablets of 8th generation or newer; check whether the option appears on your own tablet.

Knowing the generation is especially useful if you are comparing advice online. A menu path or Alexa feature described for one Fire HD 8 may not appear on another. Record the model and Fire OS version before contacting Amazon support, too; that gives support a more useful starting point than the informal name “Alexa Tablet 8.” If a setting is missing, first consider whether your device or software version supports it rather than assuming something is broken.

Battery life also depends on how the tablet is used. A bright screen that stays on for long periods, background activity, and network use while idle are reasonable places to investigate. A battery-life estimate for one model or use pattern cannot promise the same runtime for another. Think of troubleshooting as comparing the same tablet under similar conditions, not as a contest against a single number advertised for a different generation.

Reduce power use from the screen

Lower brightness

Set brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable to read. The screen is often the most visible source of avoidable use because it stays active whenever you are looking at the tablet. If you use the Fire HD 8 in different lighting, adjust brightness as needed rather than leaving it brighter than the environment requires.

You do not have to make the display difficult to see to conserve charge. The practical goal is to avoid using more brightness than the room and task require. If you read indoors, for example, try a lower comfortable level and see whether it suits you. When you move to a brighter setting or use the tablet outdoors, visibility may matter more than holding to one fixed level.

Shorten the screen timeout

A shorter sleep timeout helps prevent the display from staying on after you put the tablet down. Amazon’s documented route is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Display or Display & Sounds.
  3. Choose Display Sleep or Sleep.
  4. Select a shorter duration that still suits the way you use the tablet.

The exact labels can differ by Fire OS version. A shorter timeout is most useful if the display is often left on unintentionally; it may be inconvenient if you regularly pause to read or follow instructions without touching the screen.

Choose the shortest setting that works for your routine, rather than changing it so aggressively that the display repeatedly goes dark while you are using it. If you are reading a long page, following a recipe, or pausing while watching something, an overly short timeout may interrupt you. If the tablet is frequently set down between tasks, a shorter timeout may prevent those idle periods from becoming unnecessary screen-on time. You can adjust the duration again if the trade-off feels bothersome.

Check apps and software before changing more settings

Close apps you no longer need

Amazon recommends force-closing apps running in the background as a battery-saving step. Close apps you have finished using, especially if you suspect one is continuing activity after you leave it. This is a troubleshooting check, not a promise of a particular runtime improvement. There is no need to repeatedly force-close every app as a routine; start with apps you do not need running.

Use this step selectively. If one app seems associated with the drain, close that app and observe your normal use before changing several other settings. Force-closing everything again and again is not a substitute for identifying a recurring pattern, and Amazon’s recommendation does not specify a guaranteed amount of charge recovered. If the problem continues, use the battery-usage information on your tablet if it provides it, then share the model and what you observed with support.

Confirm the tablet is up to date

Amazon also recommends keeping Fire tablet software current. Check for an available software update using the update controls on your device. Menu paths and update availability can vary, so follow the instructions shown for your Fire OS version. An update is a sensible maintenance step, but it does not guarantee that battery drain will disappear.

Keep the distinction clear: checking for an update is one of Amazon’s general troubleshooting recommendations, not evidence that an outdated tablet is necessarily the cause of fast drain. If no update is offered, do not infer that the device has a fault. Finish the available settings checks and, if the drain remains severe, ask Amazon support for advice about the exact model and version.

Turn on Low Power Mode where available

Amazon documents Low Power Mode for supported Fire tablets. On a supported device, open Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode and turn on the battery-saving option. The instructions also describe Automatic Low Power Mode: choose a battery percentage and the mode will activate when the charge reaches that level.

Amazon labels this guidance for Fire tablets of 8th generation or newer, but the feature still depends on the particular model and software. If you do not see the setting, do not assume the tablet is faulty; it may not be available on that device or version. When choosing an automatic threshold, balance the desire to conserve charge with how much battery you want to keep available before the mode begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two useful ways to think about the option. Manual activation lets you turn on the mode when you decide conserving power is important; automatic activation makes it start at the percentage you select. If you regularly need the tablet to last through a long period away from an outlet, an automatic threshold may fit that habit. If you only need power saving occasionally, manual control may be more convenient. Neither choice changes the tablet’s stated hardware capacity, and no specific runtime gain is promised for every use.

After enabling it, use the tablet as you normally would and note whether the mode suits you. The central comparison is your own routine with and without the feature: how much screen time you need, whether you rely on background connectivity, and how much remaining charge you want to preserve. Do not judge it solely by one unusually light or heavy day.

Use Smart Suspend if you do not need a constant connection

Amazon recommends Smart Suspend, which disconnects the tablet from the network when it is not in use. Consider it if you do not need background connectivity while the tablet is idle. Network behavior can affect notifications and other background functions, so weigh those needs before enabling it. If you rely on notifications arriving promptly or on other connected activity while the screen is off, test the setting with that trade-off in mind.

This makes Smart Suspend a choice about the balance between idle connectivity and conserving power, not a setting that every owner should enable without considering how they use the device. Someone who wants the tablet to remain connected for background functions may prefer to keep that behavior. Someone who does not need a constant connection while the display is off can try Smart Suspend and see whether its effect on connectivity is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When testing it, pay attention to the function you care about: for example, whether notifications or other background activity behave as you expect when the tablet is idle. If the change interferes with something you need, revisit the setting. There is no universal best configuration because the useful comparison depends on whether you value background access or prefer to limit network activity while the tablet is not in use.

Try disabling Alexa Hands-Free only if you do not use it

Alexa Hands-Free is supported on certain models: Fire HD 8 (8th, 10th, and 12th generations) and Fire HD 8 Plus (10th and 12th generations). Amazon says its toggle is in Quick Actions on the home screen. If your tablet supports the feature and you never use voice activation, you can turn it off temporarily and see whether your own battery behavior changes.

Amazon’s support guidance does not quantify how much power Hands-Free uses or how much runtime disabling it saves. Treat this as an optional experiment, not a proven fix. If you regularly use Alexa without touching the tablet, keeping the feature enabled may be more useful than an unmeasured potential saving.

First confirm that your particular model is among the listed supported devices and that the feature is enabled. Then decide whether hands-free voice access is part of your normal use. If it is not, you can try turning it off from Quick Actions and compare a similar period of tablet use. If you notice no meaningful difference, or you miss the convenience, turn it back on. There is no evidence-based savings figure to use as a promise or a reason to give up a feature you rely on.

Find out what is causing unusually fast drain

If the tablet still loses charge faster than expected, avoid assuming that a particular setting—or the battery itself—is responsible. The generation, software version, battery condition, and usage pattern are not established by the name “Amazon Alexa Tablet 8.” Use a simple troubleshooting sequence to narrow down the cause:

  1. Review battery usage if your tablet provides that screen. Look for apps or activity that stand out in the usage information available on your device. The menu and level of detail can vary by model and software.
  2. Close apps you do not need, then restart the tablet. This is a basic check for unwanted background activity; it does not diagnose hardware or guarantee a lasting improvement.
  3. Change one setting at a time. For example, shorten the sleep timeout first, then consider Low Power Mode or Smart Suspend if available. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to notice whether the change affects your usual use.
  4. Compare similar use periods. Compare the tablet under roughly similar conditions—such as similar screen time and connectivity—rather than treating one unusually busy day as proof of a fault. There is no universal runtime threshold in the available guidance for every Fire HD 8 generation.
  5. Contact Amazon support if the drain remains severe. Ask for help based on your exact model and software version. Without a device-specific assessment, there is not enough information to conclude that the battery has failed or that a replacement part is needed.

A useful comparison is not simply “before” versus “after” with no context. Note whether the screen was on for a similar amount of time, whether you were using the same general kinds of apps, and whether the tablet was connected while idle. These are the factors the troubleshooting steps are meant to help you examine. There is no need to invent a target number of hours or expect the same result as another owner; the 2024 figure discussed below is a maximum manufacturer claim for an announced lineup, not a diagnostic standard.

If you are testing changes, avoid changing brightness, timeout, Low Power Mode, Smart Suspend, and Hands-Free all at once. A collection of simultaneous changes may make the tablet feel different, but it will not tell you which one affected your experience. Try one appropriate setting, compare under roughly similar use, and keep or reverse it based on the practical result. This is a way to make a clearer personal comparison, not a formal battery test.

If settings checks do not resolve severe drain, contact Amazon rather than ordering a replacement battery or repair tools based on guesswork. The tablet’s generation and battery condition matter, and the evidence here does not establish a model-specific repair path. Support can consider the model and software details that a general name leaves out.

What Amazon’s battery-life figure does—and does not—mean

In its 2024 announcement of the Fire HD 8 lineup, Amazon stated battery life of up to 13 hours. That is a manufacturer claim for the announced lineup, not an independent test result or a guarantee for every task, setting, or battery condition. It should not be applied automatically to older Fire HD 8 models or interpreted as the runtime every owner will see.

“Up to” describes a claimed maximum, not a minimum that every tablet should reach in daily use. A person’s result can depend on the model and how the tablet is used, including screen use, background activity, connectivity, and battery condition. The announcement does not establish that your particular tablet should last exactly 13 hours, nor does falling short by itself prove that the battery has failed.

For your own tablet, the useful question is whether it lasts long enough for your actual routine and whether a setting change improves that routine. The published maximum is context, not a diagnostic target. If your device’s runtime has become unusually short, use the model-specific troubleshooting steps and contact Amazon support if the problem remains severe.

Do you need to buy anything to extend runtime?

No purchase is established as necessary for the settings-based steps in this guide. A power bank can provide extra charges when you are away from an outlet, but it does not increase the time the tablet runs on a single charge. A replacement battery or repair tool should not be chosen without a diagnosis tied to your specific device. Safe charging guidance is separate from improving runtime per charge.

For example, carrying a power bank may help you recharge while travelling, but it adds access to another charge rather than making the Fire HD 8 last longer between charges. A new charger or cable likewise does not address the settings and usage factors covered here. Amazon’s safety guidance for the 10th-generation Fire HD 8 recommends using the included or an approved charging cable with a compatible charger; that is safe-charging advice, not a runtime upgrade. Do not treat charging accessories as a substitute for diagnosing persistent drain.

The order of operations is therefore straightforward: confirm the model, try the relevant built-in settings, compare your own use, and ask Amazon support if severe drain persists. This keeps the response proportional to what is known about the device instead of turning a vague symptom into an unsupported repair or purchase recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I extend battery life on my Fire tablet?

Start with the built-in options: lower brightness, shorten the screen timeout, close apps you no longer need, check for a software update, and use Low Power Mode or Smart Suspend if your model supports them. Consider disabling Alexa Hands-Free only if your tablet supports it and you do not use the feature; Amazon does not quantify a battery saving from doing so.

Why is my Fire HD 8 battery draining so fast?

The name Fire HD 8 does not identify the generation, software version, battery condition, or your usage pattern, so there is no single cause to assume. Review battery usage if your tablet shows it, close unnecessary background apps, restart, and compare similar periods of use while changing one setting at a time. If the drain remains severe, contact Amazon support with your model and software details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop my Fire tablet from draining battery when not in use?

Shorten the screen timeout so the display sleeps sooner, and consider Smart Suspend if you do not need the tablet connected while idle. Smart Suspend can affect notifications or other background functions, so check that the trade-off works for you. Close apps you no longer need and use Low Power Mode if it is available on your device.

Where is Low Power Mode on a Fire HD 8?

On supported tablets, Amazon documents the route as Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. The instructions are labeled for Fire tablets of 8th generation or newer, but support depends on the exact model and software. If the option is absent, it may not be available on that tablet.

Does turning off Alexa Hands-Free improve Fire HD 8 battery life?

It is an optional test for owners who do not use hands-free voice access, not a proven fix. Amazon lists support on Fire HD 8 8th, 10th, and 12th generations and Fire HD 8 Plus 10th and 12th generations, with the toggle in Quick Actions. Amazon does not state a quantified battery saving from turning it off.

Is 13 hours of battery life guaranteed on every Fire HD 8?

No. Amazon’s 2024 Fire HD 8 lineup announcement stated “up to 13 hours.” That manufacturer claim is not an independent test, a guarantee for every use pattern, or a figure that automatically applies to older generations.

Should I buy a power bank or replacement battery to fix fast drain?

A power bank can provide an extra charge away from an outlet, but it does not extend runtime per charge. Do not buy a replacement battery or repair tools without a diagnosis for your exact device; contact Amazon support if severe drain persists.

The Bottom Line

Confirm your Fire HD 8 generation, then start with brightness, screen timeout, background apps, and the power-saving features your model supports. Smart Suspend and Alexa Hands-Free involve convenience trade-offs, so test them only if they fit your needs. Amazon’s 2024 “up to 13 hours” claim is not a guarantee for every model or owner. If severe drain continues after basic checks, contact Amazon support before buying parts or accessories.
