The best compromise is to keep Windows 11 on Balanced for normal work, use Best power efficiency when you are unplugged and doing lighter tasks, and reserve Best performance for demanding applications. Then reduce comfortable-but-unnecessary display power, shorten idle timeouts, limit only the background apps that matter, and check battery health before blaming settings for a worn battery.
What you can realistically improve
Battery life is determined by the workload, display, wireless activity, background software, thermal behavior and the battery’s remaining capacity. Windows settings can reduce avoidable consumption, but Microsoft does not promise a universal number of extra minutes or hours. The same change can have a large effect during light browsing and almost no effect while compiling code, rendering video or playing a demanding game.
The practical goal is selective control: save power during idle periods and light work while preserving full speed when your current task needs it. Microsoft describes Windows power mode as a choice between better battery life, better performance and a balanced experience. 1. Choose a power mode for the workload
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose Best power efficiency, Balanced or Best performance, if your PC offers them.
Use Balanced as the default
Balanced is the sensible starting point for a laptop that alternates between documents, browsers, meetings and occasional heavier work. It avoids imposing a visible performance limit on every application while avoiding the sustained power draw associated with Best performance.
Switch to Best power efficiency when the task is light
Choose Best power efficiency when you are reading, taking notes, writing or doing other work that does not need sustained processor or graphics performance. Switch back before launching a demanding application if you notice slower builds, delayed interaction or reduced frame rates. The mode is a workload choice, not a permanent battery-health setting.
Reserve Best performance for a reason
Best performance can keep a demanding task responsive, but it consumes more energy and may make the laptop warmer. Select it for the duration of a compile, export, simulation or game, then return to Balanced or Best power efficiency when that task ends. Microsoft’s performance guidance explicitly warns that selecting Best performance increases power consumption: Microsoft performance tips.

2. Adjust the display before restricting useful work
The display is a continuous power load, so display changes often preserve more usefulness than broadly throttling every application.

Set brightness to the lowest comfortable level
Use the brightness control in Quick Settings or go to Settings > System > Display. Lower brightness until text remains comfortable in the current room; an excessively dim screen can cause eye strain and does not represent a worthwhile performance trade-off.
Shorten screen-off and sleep timers
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts (the exact label can vary).
- Choose shorter times for turning off the screen and putting the device to sleep when it is on battery.
These timers mainly save power while you are not actively using the laptop. They do not slow an application while you are working. Avoid a timeout so short that the screen repeatedly turns off during reading or presentations.
Lower refresh rate when smooth motion is unnecessary
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a lower available refresh rate when you are writing, reading or working with static content. Microsoft states that a higher refresh rate provides smoother motion but uses more power: Battery saving tips for Windows. Restore the higher rate for scrolling-heavy work, animation or games where smoothness matters.

Dark mode can reduce display power most noticeably on an OLED screen because black pixels emit little or no light. On LCD panels, the backlight generally remains on, so the battery effect may be small. Treat dark mode as a comfort and preference choice unless you know the laptop uses OLED.

Review Windows energy recommendations
Windows may show suggested changes under Settings > System > Power & battery, such as brightness or timeout adjustments. Apply recommendations individually so you know which visible change you are accepting. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power-settings guidance describes these controls: Power settings in Windows 11.
3. Use Energy saver selectively
Energy saver reduces power use by managing system processes and background activity. It is useful when you need more runtime but do not want to keep the entire PC in Best power efficiency all the time.
Turn it on when runtime matters
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and expand Energy saver. Turn it on manually when the battery is running low, or configure it to activate at a chosen battery level if that control is available on your version of Windows.

Background synchronization, indexing or notifications can be delayed while Energy saver is active. If a work chat, cloud file or other background function must remain current, turn Energy saver off for that period or use a higher activation threshold only when you can tolerate delayed activity. 4. Find and control battery-hungry apps
Do not assume every short-runtime problem is caused by Windows itself. A browser tab, meeting client, game launcher or synchronization tool can consume power in the background.
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Open Battery usage to review consumption by app over the available time period.
- Identify apps whose usage is unusually high for the work you were doing.
- For an app that offers it, open its additional menu and choose the background-activity control, then select a more restrictive option when delayed updates are acceptable.
Windows does not expose the same background controls for every application. Restrict only apps that do not need to update while you are away; doing so for mail, messaging or synchronization software can postpone notifications or file changes. Close a runaway application normally first, then investigate it if the pattern returns.
5. Tune video, graphics and HDR only when relevant
Video playback
If long video playback is the problem, open Settings > Apps > Video playback and review the battery-oriented options shown by your Windows installation. Options can favor battery life over image quality during playback. Choose the battery-oriented setting for travel and restore quality-focused playback when connected to power or when picture quality matters more.

For an application that does not need the discrete GPU, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the app, choose Options, and select Power saving if Windows offers that choice. This can reduce graphics power for that application, but it may lower rendering performance. Keep a game, 3D tool or other GPU-intensive program on its higher-performance preference when responsiveness is essential.

HDR on battery
HDR playback can reduce battery life. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR to review the HDR setting and battery behavior available on your display. Turn HDR off for ordinary battery-powered video if the visual difference is not important, and enable it again for HDR content when connected to power. Microsoft documents the display implications in HDR settings in Windows.

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity as they age. If the laptop used to last much longer with the same workload and settings changes do little, the limiting factor may be the battery rather than Windows configuration.
Generate a Windows 11 battery report
- Open Command Prompt (run it as administrator if Windows requests elevation).
- Enter
powercfg /batteryreportand press Enter. - Read the location Windows reports for the generated HTML file, then open that file in a browser.
- Compare the report’s Design capacity with its Full charge capacity, and review recent usage and battery-capacity history when those sections are present.
A lower full-charge capacity means the battery now stores less energy than when it was new. The report does not by itself identify a universal replacement threshold, and replacement procedures depend on the exact laptop model. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific service documentation or an authorized repair route rather than buying a generic battery.

Use charge habits as battery care, not as an instant runtime fix
Microsoft recommends keeping the charge between 20% and 80% several times a week as battery-care guidance. That practice is intended to reduce stress from constantly remaining at the extremes; it does not restore capacity already lost and is not a quantified way to add runtime to a worn battery. Choose settings by workload instead of applying every restriction

Common problems and targeted fixes
The laptop is still slow after enabling power saving
- Return from Best power efficiency to Balanced and retest the specific application.
- Check whether Energy saver is active and temporarily disable it for a time-sensitive task.
- For graphics software, verify that Windows did not assign a power-saving GPU preference when the application needs more performance.
- Use Best performance only for the operation that requires it, rather than leaving it enabled all day.
The battery drains quickly while the laptop appears idle
- Review Battery usage for an app with unexpected background activity.
- Shorten screen-off and sleep timeouts so an unattended display is not left on.
- Use Energy saver when delayed background work is acceptable.
- If the same drain persists with minimal activity, generate a battery report and investigate battery wear or a hardware issue.
Notifications or synchronization stopped
- Check whether Energy saver is active.
- Remove restrictive background activity settings from the affected app if Windows provides that control.
- Use Balanced during periods when mail, messaging or cloud synchronization must remain current.
Video looks different after saving power
- Review the Video playback battery option and restore a quality-focused choice when needed.
- Check whether HDR was disabled or enabled.
- Restore the normal refresh rate if motion appears less smooth.
Runtime remains poor despite sensible settings
Compare the battery report’s design and full-charge capacities, then consider the laptop’s age, heat and workload. Settings cannot recover energy-storage capacity that the battery has lost. Any replacement must match the exact laptop model.
Windows 10 and version caveats
The battery-saving tips also cover Windows 10, but Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 laptop should be treated as an unsupported operating-system environment unless it has a specific support arrangement; moving to a supported Windows release may be more important than fine-tuning battery settings. Menus, labels and available power modes can differ by Windows version, firmware and manufacturer.
Bottom line
Start with Balanced, move to Best power efficiency for light unplugged work, and use Best performance only when a demanding task proves it needs it. Comfortable brightness, shorter idle timeouts, selective Energy saver use and app-level battery checks preserve runtime without imposing a blanket slowdown. If the battery report shows substantially reduced full-charge capacity, replace or service the model-specific battery rather than expecting another setting to recreate its original runtime.
