The safest way to improve a OnePlus phone’s battery life is to diagnose the drain first, then make selective changes. Open the phone’s Battery usage or Battery usage details screen, identify unusually active apps, and adjust only the settings that affect those apps. For most people, the least disruptive gains come from using a Standard or Auto refresh rate, choosing a comfortable shorter screen-off time, and limiting background activity only for apps that do not need continuous notifications.
Menu names and available choices vary by OnePlus model and OxygenOS version. Use the closest matching path on your phone rather than assuming that a setting shown in another model’s manual exists on yours.
Start with Battery usage, not a blanket power-saving mode
Battery drain has different causes: a particular app may be working in the background, the display may be using a high refresh rate, or the battery may have lost capacity with age. A blanket change can fix one cause while breaking notifications, location services, or other functions you rely on. OnePlus manuals therefore put battery-usage details and app-level controls ahead of broad restrictions.
Open the usage screen
- Open Settings.
- Open Battery.
- Choose Battery usage, Battery usage details, or the closest label shown on your model.
- Review usage since the last charge, paying attention to apps or processes that consumed an unexpectedly large share.
The OnePlus 9 manual documents a battery-usage details view. Other models may show a graph, percentages, foreground and background activity, or a differently named details page. The important step is to find the unusual consumer before changing anything.

Separate normal use from abnormal drain
Screen activity is often prominent because the display is on while you use the phone. A navigation, video, game, cloud-sync, or communication app may also be high when you intentionally used it. Treat an app as a candidate for action when its background activity is disproportionate to what you did, it continues consuming power while you were not using it, or its drain began after a specific change.
- Large screen share: consider refresh-rate and screen-off-time changes.
- One app with high background use: review that app’s battery management rather than restricting every app.
- Several apps with ordinary foreground use: make a display change first, then recheck the next charge cycle.
- System or process use that remains abnormal: document the model, OxygenOS version, and usage screen before contacting OnePlus support.
Also note the conditions around the reading. Weak cellular signal, prolonged hotspot use, navigation, camera recording, gaming, high brightness, heat, and a recent software update can all change consumption. A single short reading is less useful than a pattern that matches your normal routine. Compare similar periods, such as an ordinary workday with another workday, rather than comparing a travel day with a quiet day at home.
Official manuals do not provide a universal percentage or number of extra hours for any setting. Your result depends on signal conditions, display time, apps, temperature, and battery age.
Use a lower-disruption display configuration
Choose Standard or Auto select refresh rate
On phones that expose the OxygenOS 14 controls, open Settings > Display & brightness > Screen refresh rate. The manual lists Auto select, Standard, and High, with optional app-specific refresh rates on some models.

OnePlus’s OxygenOS 14.0 User Manual says, “A standard refresh rate is more than capable of handling your everyday use with a better battery life performance,” and notes that “higher refresh rates drain the battery faster.” Those are qualitative trade-offs, not a promise of a specific number of additional hours.
If your model offers per-app refresh rates, leave high refresh for the apps where you genuinely notice the difference and use Standard elsewhere. A model may omit Auto select, app-specific controls, or even this menu, so do not treat the OxygenOS 14 path as universal.
Make the change when the phone is at a normal charge level, then use it normally. If you spend most of the day reading static pages or messaging, Standard may be an easy compromise. If you regularly play games or scroll content where motion smoothness matters, Auto select or a per-app exception may preserve that experience without applying High everywhere. The right choice is the one that reduces unnecessary display demand while keeping the activities you care about comfortable.

Shorten screen-off time without making the phone inconvenient
Open Settings > Display & brightness and look for Auto screen off, Screen timeout, or a similar control. Choose the shortest interval that still lets you read, cook, follow directions, or complete a task without repeatedly touching the display. A shorter timeout saves energy whenever you walk away with the screen still lit, but an interval that is too short can make the phone frustrating to use.
OnePlus’s Android 12 system guide shows changing the auto screen-off time as one of several power-saving optimizations. The exact intervals and menu placement depend on the phone and software version. If you use the phone as a recipe display, timer, navigation screen, accessibility aid, or presentation remote, choose an interval that supports that job. Otherwise, reducing a very long timeout is a reversible way to avoid hours of accidental screen-on time.

Check brightness and display habits without sacrificing visibility
Brightness is not a separate guarantee of battery savings, but the display is a major part of many usage reports. Use a level that remains readable in the actual lighting rather than leaving it at a needlessly high manual setting. Automatic brightness, if your phone offers it, can reduce the time the panel stays brighter than necessary while still increasing visibility outdoors. Do not dim the display so far that you keep waking the screen or straining to read; repeated interaction defeats the convenience of the change.
Restrict background activity only where it is safe
Background management is the most likely setting to interfere with an essential feature. Restricting an app can delay notifications, pause synchronization, interrupt location updates, or make a message arrive only after you open the app. Preserve unrestricted activity for apps whose alerts or background work you depend on.
Find the app-level controls
Depending on the model, start from Settings > Battery, then open Battery optimization, App battery management, or a similarly named item. The OnePlus 9 manual lists choices such as Optimize, Intelligent Control, and Don’t optimize. The OnePlus Open manual describes app battery management, background optimization, and sleep standby optimization. These labels are model-specific; use the options your phone actually presents.

Use a decision test before restricting an app
Ask what the app must do while you are not looking at it. If the answer includes receiving a time-sensitive message, syncing a work account, tracking a route, recording a workout, controlling a device, or enforcing a security rule, treat unrestricted or less restrictive behavior as essential. If the app has no useful background role and appears high because of an unusual task, optimization is a more reasonable experiment.
Some apps contain their own sync, notification, or location controls. Check those in-app choices before applying a system restriction that affects every background operation. A mail app, for example, may let you change synchronization frequency, while a social app may offer notification categories. The OnePlus controls remain useful when an app is still active in the background after you have chosen sensible in-app settings, but change one layer at a time so you know what caused a side effect.
Apply one change and verify the side effects
- Open the app’s battery-management page from the Battery settings.
- Record its current choice so you can restore it.
- Select Optimize, Intelligent Control, or the least restrictive control that addresses the observed background drain.
- Use the app normally for a day, including receiving the notifications you consider essential.
- If alerts are late, synchronization stops, or an active task is interrupted, return the app to its previous or unrestricted setting.
Do not change ten apps at once. A one-app test makes it possible to tell whether a delayed message or missing update came from the battery setting. After each change, check Battery usage again under comparable conditions. If the app remains near the top despite little use, capture its details and move to support rather than repeatedly tightening restrictions.

Do not disable location for every app simply because an older guide lists turning off GPS as an example. OnePlus’s Android 12 guide presents actions such as closing power-draining apps, turning off GPS, changing refresh rate to 60 Hz, and changing auto screen-off time as selectable power-saving optimizations. They are examples, not a universal checklist, and location may be essential to navigation, safety, fitness, or work.
Use Battery Saver as a temporary compromise
Battery Saver is useful when you need to stretch the remaining charge, but it is not a free everyday improvement. OnePlus states in its Android 12 system guide that “Battery saver will turn off some device features and restrict apps.” The OnePlus 9 manual also documents Battery Saver alongside ordinary battery-usage and optimization controls.
When Battery Saver is appropriate
- You are away from a charger and need the phone to last until a specific time.
- The remaining charge is low and you can tolerate delayed background work.
- You are travelling and can accept reduced activity temporarily.
- You need a short-term buffer while arranging transport, finding a charger, or reaching an emergency contact.
What to check after enabling it
Expect some combination of restricted app activity, changed display behavior, or disabled features; the exact effects vary by model and OxygenOS version. Confirm that calls, critical messages, alarms, navigation, authentication, and any other essential function still behave as required. Turn Battery Saver off when the constraint ends rather than treating it as the default solution for an unidentified drain.

If your phone offers individual power-saving optimizations instead of one switch, choose only the actions you accept. For example, changing refresh rate or screen-off time may be acceptable, while disabling location or restricting a work-alert app may not be. Before a trip or event, test Battery Saver once so you know how your particular phone handles notifications and background work; do not discover those limits when you are relying on a time-sensitive alert.

Protect long-term capacity separately from today’s runtime
Charging optimization and battery health address how much capacity the battery can retain over time; they do not guarantee an immediate increase in hours between charges. A phone with a worn battery can still drain normally yet require more frequent charging because its maximum capacity is lower.
Enable optimized or adaptive charging when available
Look in Settings > Battery for Optimized charging, Adaptive charging, or a related option. The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus Open manuals describe optimized-charging features, but the name, behavior, and availability depend on the model and software. Follow the explanation shown on your phone so you know when charging may be delayed or managed.
Charging optimization is a long-term battery-care choice, not a setting that promises more runtime from the next full charge. If you need the phone immediately, use the normal charging behavior your phone provides. If you usually leave it connected for a predictable period, an optimized mode may fit that routine while reducing prolonged full-charge time, subject to the behavior documented for your model.
Check maximum capacity or battery health
The OnePlus Open manual includes a battery-health section with a maximum-capacity reading and states: “A lower percentage means less usage time between charges.” Treat that reading as an indicator of available capacity, not as a measurement of how much a particular setting will save.

A healthy-looking percentage does not rule out abnormal software behavior, and a low percentage does not mean that a refresh-rate change can restore the missing capacity.
If the health reading is low, software restrictions cannot restore the lost physical capacity. Check the official OnePlus support information for your exact model and region to determine whether service or a replacement is available. A replacement battery is model- and region-dependent and may require authorized service; do not assume that every OnePlus phone has the same procedure.
A practical order of operations
Use this sequence when you want more runtime while keeping essential features available:
- Inspect usage: open Battery usage details and identify the unexpected consumer.
- Make the display change: select Standard or Auto select refresh rate if your model offers it, then choose a comfortable shorter screen-off interval.
- Target one app: optimize only an app with disproportionate background activity, preserving unrestricted behavior for essential notifications and active tasks.
- Observe: use the phone normally and check the next usage report rather than judging a change immediately.
- Use Battery Saver temporarily: enable it only when its feature and app restrictions are acceptable.
- Check health: review maximum capacity or battery-health information if runtime remains poor despite ordinary usage.
- Escalate persistent problems: contact official OnePlus support with the exact model, OxygenOS version, battery-health reading, and screenshots or notes from Battery usage.
Keep a short record when troubleshooting: the date, starting charge, major activities, settings changed, and any missed notifications. This is more useful than repeatedly guessing. Restore a setting if it harms an essential function, then test the next low-disruption option.

Common mistakes that reduce reliability
Changing every app to the most restrictive setting
This can save background work at the cost of late notifications and broken synchronization. Target only the apps identified in Battery usage and test each change.
Assuming a setting from another OnePlus model exists on yours
The OxygenOS 14 manual, OnePlus 9 manual, OnePlus Open manual, and Android 12 guide describe different menus and controls. Model, region, and OxygenOS version determine what you see.
Expecting a guaranteed number of extra hours
Official documentation provides directional guidance, not a comparable hours-saved or percentage-saved figure for a particular user. Treat any improvement as usage-dependent.
Using Battery Saver to hide a failing battery
Battery Saver can postpone charging, but it cannot restore degraded capacity. A persistently low health reading or unexplained drain warrants model-specific support rather than increasingly aggressive restrictions.
Confusing a charger or power bank with more battery capacity

Choose Standard when ordinary tasks matter more than maximum motion smoothness. Choose Auto select when you want the phone to balance available refresh behavior automatically. Not every model offers both choices, and app-specific controls may be available only on some phones.

Will battery optimization stop notifications?
It can delay notifications or synchronization because the app may have less freedom to run in the background. Keep messaging, calling, calendar, security, and work-alert apps unrestricted or on the least restrictive option, then test any change before relying on it.
Is Battery Saver safe to leave on all the time?
It may be useful, but OnePlus says Battery Saver turns off some device features and restricts apps. Use it when you accept those trade-offs, especially during low-charge situations, and turn it off when normal background behavior is important.
