Do not deactivate or delete a social account until you have requested its official export, downloaded the archive, opened representative files, and stored two independent copies. Start by recording your account details and asking important contacts for an email address or phone number; a follower or connection export often does not include a practical way to reach each person. Then request the broadest available archive, verify its contents, and only afterward remove posts, cancel subscriptions, disconnect sign-ins, and close the account.
Make an inventory before requesting anything
An export preserves what a platform stores, not every piece of your digital life. Inventory the account first so you know what must be checked and what may need a separate copy.
Record account access and dependencies
- Write down the username, profile URL, recovery email address, and recovery phone number.
- List apps and services that use this account for sign-in. Change those services to an independent email and password before closing the social account.
- Note paid subscriptions, creator tools, advertising accounts, pages, groups, business integrations, and any administrator role that another person needs transferred.
- Save authentication or recovery codes and confirm that you can still receive security messages while the export is being prepared.
Find material that may not be in the archive
- Check drafts, scheduled posts, private stories, saved items, bookmarks, collections, and deleted-item folders.
- Look on phones, tablets, cameras, and computers for original photos or videos that were uploaded from a device and may no longer exist in full resolution online.
- Ask important contacts for an off-platform email address or phone number. A list of followers, following, or connections may contain names and IDs but no usable contact method.
- Identify direct messages, comments, and posts that you need for legal, financial, professional, or personal records.
Keep this inventory beside the export request. It becomes a test plan when the archive arrives.

Use the platform’s own data-download control rather than a browser extension or scraping service. The official archive is the only route in this guide that can include private messages, account history, inferred information, and relationship data held behind the login.

Facebook and Instagram through Meta Accounts Center
Meta moved Facebook and Instagram downloads into Accounts Center. Its October 17, 2023 announcement says information from both accounts can be requested at the same time, so a combined request can be useful when the two profiles share an email or phone number. In Accounts Center, open the download or access area, select the account or accounts, and choose the option to download your information.
Instagram also supports transferring photos and videos to other services. A transfer can create an additional off-device copy, but it is not a substitute for retaining the original archive. Menu names and available categories can change, so inspect the request summary before submitting it.
X
On X, use Settings and privacy → Your X data → Request data. X supplies a ZIP archive containing HTML and JSON files. The service says the archive can include profile information, posts, Direct Messages, Moments, attached images, videos and GIFs, followers, following, an address book, lists, inferred interests and demographics, and advertising-interaction information.
Confirm the email address or phone number on the account and remain signed in on the same browser while the request is prepared. X warns that an archive may take a few days, so do not start deletion while the request is still pending.

LinkedIn’s path is Settings & Privacy → Data Privacy → Download your data. Select individual categories when you need a quick, focused file, or request the larger download for a broader record. LinkedIn identifies rich-media URLs, connections, contacts, comments, member follows, messages, and shares among the available categories.
The download feature is not available on mobile. Specific category files may arrive within minutes; LinkedIn says a larger download is emailed within 24 hours and its link remains available for 72 hours. Download it promptly and do not assume that connection email addresses will be present: some members withhold them through their privacy settings. The export contains your data, not a private copy of another member’s account.
TikTok
TikTok’s official support documentation describes requesting a copy of your data. The exact wording and location of the control can vary by app version and region, so open the current in-app privacy or account-data area and read the confirmation screen carefully before submitting. People in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom may be able to authorize certain third-party transfers. Treat that transfer as an additional route, not proof that every video, message, draft, or recommendation record will be included.
The official deletion guidance does not provide a comparable export workflow in the material available here. Plan on preserving posts, comments, media, messages, and account details manually or through any download control Reddit currently shows in your account before you delete it. Reddit states that deletion cannot be reactivated, removes access to the account and its history, and does not automatically delete posts or comments. If those contributions must disappear, remove them before deleting the account.

Choose every useful category and a complete date range
Export defaults are often narrower than the record you think you are requesting. Read the category list and select the widest date range, highest media quality, and complete history options the platform presents.
Use this category checklist
- Posts, reposts, shares, stories, reels, videos, photos, and other uploaded media.
- Comments, replies, reactions, likes, saved items, bookmarks, lists, collections, and follows.
- Followers, following, friends, connections, contacts, address-book entries, and group or page memberships.
- Direct or private messages, message attachments, and conversation metadata.
- Profile information, account history, login or security history, settings, and connected applications.
- Drafts, scheduled items, deleted-item records, and live-stream or creator records when the platform offers them.
Some records are delivered as actual files; others are links, IDs, or spreadsheets that point back to the service. A rich-media URL is not the same as a downloaded video. Note that distinction in your inventory and plan a separate download when the archive supplies links only.
Set the date and format deliberately
Choose “all time” or the earliest available start date rather than the last year or last 90 days. If the service offers HTML and JSON, keep both: HTML is easier to read, while JSON preserves structured fields that may be needed for sorting or migration. Request the highest available media quality only when you have enough storage; a smaller request can be repeated later if the first archive is incomplete.

Download, inspect, and validate the archive
A completed request is not a backup until you have downloaded it and confirmed that it opens. Preserve the provider’s original ZIP untouched and perform checks on a working copy.

- Wait for the completion notice. Keep the account active and watch the recovery email, in-app notifications, and download page. X may take a few days. LinkedIn’s larger file is expected within 24 hours and remains downloadable for 72 hours.
- Download over a stable connection. Use a computer when possible, especially for LinkedIn, whose download feature is unavailable on mobile. Record the download date and the account it belongs to.
- Keep the original archive read-only. Make a duplicate before extracting. Do not rename files inside the original or delete folders that look unfamiliar.
- Extract a working copy. Open the HTML index, browse the JSON files in a text editor, and inspect the folder structure. A browser may display HTML navigation while JSON reveals fields that the navigation omits.
- Test media at random. Open photos from different years, play several videos, and check a direct-message attachment and a recently published item. Confirm that files are not zero bytes, corrupted, or merely thumbnail-sized.
- Check the time span and counts. Compare the earliest and latest entries with your inventory. Look for folders for comments, messages, followers or connections, contacts, saved items, and account history.
- Check links separately. If a record contains URLs instead of local media, open a sample while still signed in and download what you need. A URL can expire or require permission after the account is closed.
- Record omissions. Write down categories that the platform did not offer or that arrived empty. This prevents a false assumption that an absent folder means you never had that data.
Do not delete the account merely because a download button became available. Validation is the point at which you discover a wrong date range, an unselected category, or media that was never included.
Keep two independent copies
Store the untouched archive and your extracted working copy in at least two locations. One practical arrangement is a local computer plus a portable external SSD, with an encrypted cloud copy if the material is irreplaceable. The second location should not be permanently attached to the computer used to edit the files.
- Use a clear folder name containing the platform, username, and download date.
- Protect the archive with the operating system’s disk encryption or an encrypted container, because messages and profile data can be more sensitive than the public posts.
- Open a few files from the second copy, not just the first. A copy that was never tested may be incomplete.
- Keep the original ZIP until you have finished any conversion or media reorganization.
Meta’s ability to transfer Instagram photos and videos to another service can help create an off-device copy, but retain an independent archive as well. No cross-platform “typical archive size” can be assumed; estimate storage from the size of the completed download rather than from a generic figure.

Deal with followers, contacts, and messages realistically
An exported relationship list is not a permission slip to contact everyone. It may contain display names, account IDs, or platform-specific handles without an email address, and privacy settings can deliberately hide contact fields. Use the list as a record of who you followed or who followed you, then contact only people for whom you already have a legitimate off-platform route.

For professional relationships, send a short notice before closing the account with your new email address or phone number. For community or business accounts, transfer administrator access and save moderation rules, member lists, and scheduled content separately. Preserve message attachments by opening them from the archive; a conversation file that references an attachment without containing it is not a complete copy.
Delete in an order that limits damage
- Finish validation and the second copy. Do not proceed while a required category is still processing or a download link is close to expiring.
- Remove content that must not remain public. This is especially important on Reddit: deleting the account does not delete posts or comments. Remove those items first if permanent removal is your goal.
- Notify essential contacts. Provide an off-platform route before your profile disappears.
- Cancel paid plans and transfer ownership. Check subscriptions, page roles, groups, advertising billing, and creator tools.
- Disconnect social-login dependencies. Replace the social sign-in on other services and test the new login before closure.
- Deactivate or delete the account. Read the final confirmation for the retention period and whether the action can be reversed. LinkedIn warns that closing the account removes access to account data. Reddit deletion cannot be reactivated.
- Keep your archive and deletion record. Save the confirmation email or screen with the archive metadata so you can explain later when and how the account was closed.
Troubleshoot common export failures
The request is missing categories
Canceling and resubmitting with a wider date range or additional categories is safer than assuming the first archive is complete. Compare the request summary with the inventory, and check whether the platform separates messages, media, comments, and profile history into individual downloads.
The download link expired
Request a new archive while the account remains active. LinkedIn’s larger download link lasts 72 hours, so an expired link requires a fresh request rather than a recovery attempt on the old URL.

Compare file sizes, re-download the archive, and test the untouched ZIP. If only linked media fails, open the links while signed in and save the files separately. Keep a note of anything the platform no longer serves.
You cannot access the account
Use the platform’s recovery process first; an export request generally requires an authenticated session. Verify the recovery email and phone recorded in your inventory, and avoid deleting the account until access and the pending archive are resolved.
Another service still uses the account
Sign in to that service directly, change its email and password, add an independent recovery method, and test it in a private browser window. Only then disconnect the social login or close the social account.
