Export your old assistant’s data before closing the account, then separately save the prompts, instructions, memories, and files that make your workflow useful. A provider archive is not automatically a portable backup: ChatGPT can make an exported JSON file available as reference without rebuilding old threads, Gemini supports ZIP history imports under account and regional limits, and Claude does not support importing an exported archive into another personal Claude account.
What to preserve before you switch
Think of a move as two separate jobs. First, request and verify the provider’s account export. Second, create a clean handoff of the working context you want to recreate in the new assistant. Keeping those jobs separate prevents a common mistake: assuming a ZIP file contains an import-ready copy of every setting and preference.
Make an inventory
List the material you actually need before requesting an export. Mark each item as essential, useful, or disposable.

- Reusable prompts: collect prompts you wrote or adapted, including role instructions, formatting rules, evaluation rubrics, and prompt templates.
- Custom instructions and preferences: record tone, language, coding conventions, output format, accessibility preferences, and recurring constraints.
- Saved memories: note facts and preferences you want the new assistant to know. Treat this as a summary to review, not as a promise that every provider exports memory in the same format.
- Attachments: copy documents, images, spreadsheets, and project files that you still have the right to retain and use.
- Account obligations: check subscriptions, shared workspaces, team ownership, and retention policies before you cancel or leave anything.
Export scope and destination support differ by provider. An inventory lets you test each item instead of discovering after closure that a chat, file, or workspace permission was never portable.

Export ChatGPT data safely
Request the export
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account you intend to preserve.
- Open the profile menu and choose Settings.
- Open Data controls, select Export data, and choose Export.
- Select Confirm export.
- Wait for the email or SMS notification. OpenAI says preparation can take up to seven days.
- While signed in to the requesting account, use the download link. It expires 24 hours after delivery, so download promptly.
Download the ZIP to storage you control, then make a second protected copy according to your normal backup practice. Do not assume that an earlier link can be recovered after an account or workspace change.
Check eligibility before you start
Settings-based exports are available to signed-in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu users. Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces; ask the workspace owner for the organization’s export process. Edu exports also depend on your role and workspace settings.
Verify the archive
Open the ZIP and confirm that the conversations you identified are present. Look for the chat-history files and any other account data relevant to your inventory. A successful download is not proof that every deleted or inaccessible item is included: OpenAI states that deleted chats cannot be restored from an export.

Export Claude data
Personal accounts
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop and sign in.
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Start the data export and wait for the email containing the download link.
- Download the archive within 24 hours of delivery; the link then expires.
Individual Free, Pro, and Max users can use this route. The iOS and Android apps cannot initiate exports, so use the web app or Claude Desktop.

Team and Enterprise accounts
For Team and Enterprise organizations, the Primary Owner controls exports. Enterprise organization exports are accessed through Settings > Data management. Coordinate with the owner before leaving the organization; a personal export does not replace the organization’s retention or compliance process.
Know the import limitation
Anthropic documents that exported Claude data cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. Preserve the archive for reference, but plan to recreate prompts and context manually or with the documented memory workflow rather than expecting a direct restore.
Keep a protected local copy
Store at least one copy somewhere you control, such as your computer’s encrypted storage or an established backup service. A USB flash drive is only a storage choice; a generic drive does not guarantee encryption, access control, or recovery if it is lost.
- Use a strong device password and enable full-disk encryption where available.
- Keep the export away from shared folders and public links.
- Restrict access to any backup account that contains the archive.
- Open a few files before deleting or closing the source account so you know the copy is readable.
- Remember that exports can contain sensitive account information, including private conversations and profile data.
Create a portable prompts and context document
Do not wait for the archive to provide an import-ready instruction set. Create a plain-text or Markdown file that you can inspect and edit. Include only information you are comfortable sending to the destination assistant.

Suggested sections
- Role and goals: what you use an assistant to accomplish.
- Response rules: preferred structure, level of detail, tone, spelling, language, citation style, and code conventions.
- Reusable prompts: one prompt per heading, with a short note explaining when to use it.
- Active projects: current status, terminology, decisions, constraints, and next actions.
- Reference files: filenames, versions, and a note about which files must be uploaded again.
- Memory candidates: durable preferences separated from temporary task details.
Remove passwords, API keys, payment details, confidential client information, and personal data that the new assistant does not need. Keep the original extraction and a redacted sharing copy if you need an audit trail.
Move memory and working context
Claude memory import
- Ask your current assistant to list the memories and context it has about you or your work.
- Edit the request or result to exclude sensitive material and temporary details.
- Save a Markdown copy locally if the source assistant can generate one.
- In Claude, open Settings > Memory and choose Start import.
- Paste the reviewed result and select Add to memory.
- Review what Claude learned afterward and correct omissions or inaccuracies.
Anthropic describes this import as experimental. Claude focuses memory on work-related topics, so unrelated personal details may not be retained. Treat the resulting memory as a convenience layer, not as the authoritative copy of your instructions.
Gemini memory import
- In Gemini, open Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini.
- Copy the prompt Gemini provides.
- Paste that prompt into your source assistant and ask it to generate the requested memory summary.
- Review the response for sensitive or outdated information.
- Paste the approved response back into Gemini and add it as memory.
Google says imported information is used as context for future conversations. Keep your own Markdown file as the editable source of truth so you can update or revoke details later.

Move chats between personal ChatGPT accounts
ChatGPT does not support a full personal-account merge. The documented workaround makes the exported content available as a file in a new conversation.

- Extract the export ZIP on a trusted computer.
- Locate
conversations.json. Larger exports may contain numbered conversation JSON files instead. - Sign in to the destination personal account and start a new conversation.
- Upload the relevant JSON file and explain what you want the assistant to do with it, such as finding decisions or summarizing a project.
- Test several questions against the uploaded content before relying on it.
This creates a reference conversation; it does not rebuild the old sidebar or turn each historical thread into a separate chat. Subscriptions, settings, memories, GPTs, files, and workspace access remain with the original account unless you recreate them through supported methods.

Check eligibility and limits first
Google’s current import requires a personal Google Account, access to the source AI account, and an age of at least 18. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts and is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The upload limit is 5 GB per ZIP, with up to five ZIP files per day. Processing may take up to one day.
Prepare and upload
- Request and verify the source export before beginning the Gemini import.
- Keep the archive in ZIP format and check that it does not exceed 5 GB.
- Sign in to the eligible personal Google Account.
- Open Gemini’s import-from-other-AI option and follow the upload instructions.
- Wait for processing, which can take up to a day, then search the imported chats and open representative conversations.
Imported chats are saved in Activity. Google says this data is used to improve Google services, including training generative AI models. Review Activity and privacy controls before uploading sensitive material, and delete activity you no longer want retained.

You can search imported chats and delete them individually. Uploading the archive again adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones. If an import is interrupted and some chats are partial, Google recommends deleting the import entry and trying again rather than assuming the incomplete result will repair itself.

Review privacy, subscriptions, and workspace access
Separate model-improvement controls from deletion
In ChatGPT, the model-improvement setting and Memory settings are separate from chat retention. Turning off model improvement does not delete or hide saved chats. Deleting chats or closing the account is a separate action, and deletion should happen only after you have verified the copies you need.
Account for managed workspaces
Organization policies can control retention, Memory, compliance, and access. A personal export may not include material governed by a managed workspace, and leaving the workspace can remove access before you finish copying what you are allowed to keep. Ask the workspace owner or administrator about the approved export and retention process.
Check billing and access
Before abandoning the old account, review active Plus or Pro subscriptions and any team membership. Moving conversations does not automatically move billing, workspace access, or other account entitlements.

The export email has not arrived
- Allow the provider’s stated processing window; ChatGPT exports can take up to seven days.
- Check the account’s inbox, spam folder, and any alternate delivery channel such as SMS.
- Confirm that you requested the export while signed in to the intended account.
- For managed ChatGPT or Claude organizations, contact the workspace owner instead of repeatedly using a personal export path.
The download link expired
ChatGPT and Claude links expire after 24 hours. Request a new export and download it promptly. Do not rely on a link saved from before an account or workspace change.
The archive is present but the destination looks empty
Check what the destination actually supports. A ChatGPT JSON upload is reference material in a new conversation, not a sidebar reconstruction. A Claude personal archive cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. For Gemini, confirm that processing finished and inspect Activity for the imported entry.
The Gemini import is partial or duplicated
For a partial import, delete the import entry and retry as Google recommends. For duplicates or replacement behavior, remember that uploading the archive again adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones.
Final pre-closure checklist
- Inventory important chats, prompts, custom instructions, memories, files, subscriptions, and workspace access.
- Request the source provider’s export while the account is still active.
- Download the archive before the 24-hour link window closes, where applicable.
- Open the files and verify representative conversations.
- Create and review a separate Markdown or plain-text prompts and context document.
- Use Claude or Gemini’s memory flow only after editing out sensitive or obsolete details.
- Test the destination with real questions and files before closing the source account.
- Review privacy, Activity, model-improvement, billing, and organization settings.
- Keep a protected local copy and record where it is stored.
- Close or cancel the old account only after the checklist is complete.
The safest switch is therefore a verified archive plus a human-reviewed handoff document. That combination preserves historical evidence even when the destination cannot recreate old threads, and it gives the new assistant clear, intentional context instead of an unexamined dump of private data.
