Export your Claude data while you can still sign in. On the web app or Claude Desktop, an individual user or Team Primary Owner starts under Settings > Privacy; an Enterprise Primary Owner uses Settings > Data management. Anthropic emails a download link to the account address. You must remain signed in to use it, and the link expires 24 hours after delivery.
What the Claude export does
Anthropic’s export process produces a downloadable copy of the account’s conversation data and user data. It is the practical way to preserve saved chats before an account is deleted, a work relationship changes, or you expect to lose login access. The official instructions are at Anthropic’s Claude data-export help page.
Exports are initiated from a web browser or Claude Desktop. Claude’s mobile apps cannot start an export. Anthropic says processing may take a small, unspecified amount of time; its instructions do not promise a particular generation deadline, file format, or retention period for a downloaded file.
The email link is a short-lived delivery mechanism rather than permanent access. It expires 24 hours after Anthropic sends it, and downloading requires an active sign-in to the same account. If the link expires, you can request another export while you still have access.

Why timing matters
Do not treat an export request as something to do after your final day, after an account suspension, or immediately before deletion. Anthropic does not publish a guaranteed processing time, so a request made hours before access ends may not be ready in time. Start while you can still authenticate, confirm that the associated email account works, and leave enough time to download and inspect the result.
An export is not a live connection to your Claude history. It is a file or archive delivered after processing. Once you have saved it, preserve it in a place you control and can open later. Anthropic does not state how long a downloaded file remains available, so the 24-hour rule should be understood as a rule for the emailed link, not as a promise about the lifetime of a file you already downloaded.
Check your account type and permission first
The menu and the data scope depend on whether you use an individual account or a work organization. Use this table before starting so you do not wait for a control that your role cannot see.

| Team or Enterprise member, administrator, or ordinary owner | No member-level export path is identified in the permissions table | Ask the organization’s Primary Owner or administrator | Primary Owner capability, subject to the organization’s process |
Anthropic’s roles and permissions documentation lists requesting data exports as a Primary Owner capability for Team and Enterprise plans. A work-plan customer organization may access and export users’ conversation history, according to Anthropic’s explanation of data-controller and processor responsibilities. A member should not assume that personal access to Claude also grants permission to export the organization’s records.
“Owner,” “administrator,” and “Primary Owner” are not interchangeable for this task. If the export control is missing, first verify the role shown in the organization’s settings rather than repeatedly refreshing the page. Ask the Primary Owner which account should submit the request and whether the organization has an approval, retention, or legal-hold process.
Export an individual account or Team account
This is the route for an individual Free, Pro, or Max account and for a Claude for Work Team Primary Owner. An active account is required for the normal self-service route.
- Open Claude on a computer. Use the Claude web app in a browser or Claude Desktop. Do not use the mobile app for this request.
- Open the account menu. Select your initials in the lower-left corner, then choose Settings.
- Open Privacy. In Settings, select the Privacy section.
- Request the export. Select Export data and submit the request.
- Monitor the account email. Anthropic sends the download link to the email address associated with the Claude account. Check spam, quarantine, or corporate mail filtering if the message does not appear.
- Download promptly. Sign in to Claude, open the emailed link, and complete the download within 24 hours of delivery.
Keep the browser session signed in until the file is saved. If the link has expired, return to the same Privacy page and submit a new export request; Anthropic’s instructions allow a replacement request but do not state an exact processing time.

Before clicking Export data
- Confirm that you are in the intended Claude account, especially if one email address is associated with more than one account.
- Confirm that the destination inbox is accessible and that corporate filtering will not quarantine the message.
- Use a computer you trust and have enough free storage for the resulting download.
- Plan where the file will be protected after download; the email link is not a substitute for a backup.
For a paid account, exporting does not cancel Pro or Max billing. Billing and deletion are separate actions. If the goal is simply to retain a copy while continuing to use Claude, request and verify the export without deleting the account.
Export organization data as an Enterprise Primary Owner
Enterprise Primary Owners use a separate control because the request concerns organization data rather than only one person’s account.

- Open Claude in a web browser or Claude Desktop.
- Select your initials in the lower-left corner and open Settings.
- Choose Data management.
- Select Export Data and submit the organization export request.
- Watch the Primary Owner’s associated email address for Anthropic’s delivery message.
- Sign in and use the emailed link before its 24-hour expiration.
Do not describe this export as an audit-log export. Anthropic’s export instructions and the information summarized here do not establish that audit logs are included. Audit-log access is handled through a separate Enterprise process.
Organization export also raises an ownership question. The downloaded material can concern multiple users, so the Primary Owner should follow the organization’s privacy, security, retention, and legal-hold rules. A Primary Owner should not automatically distribute the file to every member; decide who is authorized to receive it and how it will be stored.
How the emailed download works
Anthropic sends the link only after it has processed the request. The service does not publish a guaranteed processing duration in the cited instructions, so allow time before a deadline and do not wait until the last minutes of an account’s availability.
- Destination: the email address associated with the Claude account or Primary Owner.
- Authentication: you must be signed in to the account when opening the link. Anthropic states, “you must be signed in to your account to download your data using this link.”
- Validity: the link expires 24 hours after delivery.
- Expired link: request another export from the applicable Settings page.
- File details: Anthropic does not specify a JSON, HTML, ZIP, or other format in the cited help article, so do not build an automated workflow that assumes one.
After downloading, open the file or archive to verify that it saved correctly before closing the account session. Make a second copy in a secure location if the conversations are important; an external drive is an optional preservation choice, not an Anthropic requirement.
What to do when the email is delayed
First check the exact address attached to the Claude account, then inspect spam, quarantine, and corporate mail filtering. A small processing delay is expected, but no precise delivery deadline is promised. Avoid submitting many overlapping requests unless necessary; if a link expires, use the applicable Settings page to request a fresh export.
When the message arrives, note the delivery time so you know when the 24-hour window ends. Open it while already signed in to the same account. If you are working on a managed computer, save the file only to an approved location and remove any temporary copy from a shared downloads folder after verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is included—and what is not specified
The documented scope is conversation data and user data for the account. That wording supports preserving saved Claude conversations and associated account information, but it does not define every field, attachment type, metadata item, or organizational record that may appear in a particular export.
| Question | What Anthropic’s instructions establish |
|---|---|
| Are saved conversations included? | Yes. The export is described as including conversation data. |
| Is account information included? | Yes. The export is described as including user data. |
| What file format will arrive? | Not stated in the cited export instructions. |
| How long will generation take? | Only a small processing delay is mentioned; no precise deadline is stated. |
| How long can a downloaded file be retained? | Not stated. The 24-hour limit applies to the emailed link, not a published retention period for a file you already saved. |
| Are Enterprise audit logs included? | Not established by the export instructions; use the separate audit-log procedure if those records are required. |
Because the help article does not enumerate every object, do not promise that a particular attachment, generated artifact, deleted message, audit record, or workspace setting will appear. If a specific record is business-critical, identify it before requesting the export and ask Anthropic support or the work Primary Owner how that record is handled.
If you cannot use the Claude mobile app
Mobile Claude applications cannot initiate data exports. Switch to the web app or Claude Desktop and follow the account-type path above. This limitation concerns starting the export; it does not prevent you from later downloading a file on a computer after receiving the email.

If you have already lost login access
Use Anthropic’s Help Center messenger rather than assuming that an old export link will work. On the How to Get Support page, choose I can’t login and explain that you need assistance with a data export.
- Open the Anthropic Help Center support page.
- Start the Help Center messenger.
- Select I can’t login.
- State the account email, explain that you need your Claude conversation and user data, and mention when you lost access.
- Follow any identity or ownership checks support requests.
This is a support route, not a promise that every inaccessible account can be recovered or exported. The export link itself requires sign-in, so support may need to resolve the access problem or determine what assistance is possible. Include enough account detail for the team to identify the correct account, but do not send passwords or unnecessary sensitive information.
If the account belongs to a Team or Enterprise organization, contact the organization’s Primary Owner or administrator as well as Anthropic support. The organization may control access to work-plan conversation history, and a member’s personal inability to sign in does not by itself establish a right to receive an organization-wide export.
Export before deleting your account
Account deletion is permanent. Anthropic’s deletion instructions warn: “Please note that deleting your account is permanent and you will no longer have access to saved chats.” Treat export as a separate step that must finish before deletion.
- Request the export from the correct Settings page.
- Wait for the email and download the file while signed in.
- Open or inspect the saved download to confirm it is usable.
- Store a second copy in a secure location if the conversations matter to you.
- Only then begin account deletion.
For Pro and Max subscribers, Anthropic instructs users to cancel through Billing settings and wait until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account. Follow the sequence in Anthropic’s account-deletion instructions rather than deleting first and trying to resolve billing afterward.
If several Claude accounts are associated with one email address, the deletion instructions say to specify which accounts should be deleted. Identify the exact account you exported and the exact account you intend to remove. Do not delete an account merely because another account using the same email has already been exported.
Deletion is not a backup step
Once deletion begins, saved chats will no longer be accessible through that account. A pending export request should not be treated as proof that a usable copy exists. Wait for the delivery email, complete the download, and verify the saved file before opening the deletion workflow.
What work-account members should do
A Team or Enterprise member should contact the organization’s Primary Owner or administrator as soon as a departure, role change, or access deadline is known. The permissions documentation identifies export requests as a Primary Owner function, not a general member function.

- Clarify whether you need only your own conversations or records held by the organization.
- Request the export before your work identity is disabled.
- Ask how the organization will deliver the copy and protect confidential material.
- Confirm whether your employer permits personal retention of any portion of the conversations.
Do not copy company conversations to personal storage without permission. The organization may control access to and export of work-plan conversation history, so its policy can govern what you may retain. If your departure is imminent, make the request in writing and include the date on which your work sign-in is expected to stop.
Practical preservation and security checklist
Anthropic does not prescribe a backup method, but a careful download process reduces the chance that a temporary email link becomes your only recovery option.
- Use a private, trusted computer rather than a shared public machine.
- Confirm the destination email account is still accessible before requesting the export.
- Download as soon as the message arrives; do not rely on the final hours of the 24-hour window.
- Verify the file size and that it opens or extracts successfully.
- Keep one copy in an access-controlled location and, if appropriate, a second copy on separate storage.
- Protect the export as sensitive data: conversations may contain personal, client, company, or credential information.
- Do not upload the file to an unrelated service merely to inspect it.
- For a work account, follow your employer’s retention, privacy, and legal-hold rules.
An external hard drive can be one optional destination for a second copy, but Anthropic does not require a particular device, brand, price, or storage service. Choose storage that your security policy permits and that you can access when the original Claude account is no longer available.
Verify before you close the session
Check that the download completed rather than relying on a browser notification. If it is an archive, confirm that it can be opened or extracted. If it is a document or another file type, open it sufficiently to confirm it is not empty or corrupted. Keep the original downloaded file unchanged and make a working copy only if you need to inspect or organize the contents.
Troubleshooting export problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No Export data option | Wrong account type, wrong Settings section, or insufficient work-account role | Individuals and Team Primary Owners use Privacy; Enterprise Primary Owners use Data management. A member should contact the Primary Owner. |
| Using a phone | Mobile apps cannot initiate exports | Switch to the web app or Claude Desktop. |
| Email has not arrived | Processing delay or mail filtering | Check the associated address, spam, quarantine, and corporate filters; allow time for processing. |
| Link says it is expired | More than 24 hours have passed since delivery | Sign in and submit a new export request. |
| Link asks for a login | Authentication is required | Sign in to the same Claude account before opening the link. |
| Cannot sign in at all | Account-access problem | Use the Help Center messenger and choose I can’t login; support assistance is not guaranteed. |
| Export appears incomplete | Scope or format is not fully defined by the help article | Check the downloaded file, then ask Anthropic support or your work Primary Owner about the specific missing record. |
If the control is missing even though you believe you are eligible, check whether you are signed in to the intended account and whether you are a Team or Enterprise Primary Owner. An administrator or ordinary owner may not have the same permission. If access has already been removed, stop trying old links and use the Help Center’s I can’t login route.
