The right way to save Gemini depends on what you need. For a complete archive of Gemini Apps activity, use Google Takeout and select My Activity > Gemini Apps; add the separate Gemini data item when you also need Gems data. To preserve one useful answer, use the response’s Share & export menu, or ask Gemini to create a PDF, DOCX, CSV, text, or another supported file. A shared conversation link is for giving other people access, not for private backup: anyone with the link can read and reshare it.
These methods have different scopes. Takeout creates an archive but does not delete the activity stored on Google’s servers. Response exports save a selected answer or table. File generation creates a new document from the chat rather than a guaranteed full-fidelity transcript. Sharing creates a public link to the conversation as it existed when the link was made.

How to export all Gemini chats with Google Takeout
Takeout is Google’s documented route for downloading Gemini Apps activity in bulk. Use the same Google Account that you use with Gemini Apps; selecting a different account can produce an archive that does not contain the chats you expect.
1. Open Takeout and sign in
- Go to Google Takeout and sign in to the Google Account used with Gemini Apps.
- In Select data to include, choose Deselect all if you want a focused Gemini export rather than a copy of other Google data.
2. Select Gemini Apps activity
- Select My Activity.
- Open All activity data included.
- Deselect activity types you do not need, select Gemini Apps, and confirm. Google describes this activity selection as including Gemini chats, generated media and uploads.
3. Add Gems data when required
If you use Gems and want that data too, separately select the data item named Gemini. My Activity > Gemini Apps and the separate Gemini item are distinct choices in Takeout. Select both when your archive must cover regular Gemini Apps activity and Gems data.

4. Configure and create the archive
- Select Next step.
- Choose a delivery method: an email download link, Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or Box.
- Choose an archive format, ZIP or TGZ, and set the maximum archive size.
- Choose whether this is a one-time export or a recurring export, then create the export.
Google says the email download link remains active for seven days. Drive delivery counts against Drive storage. If you send the archive to a third-party storage service, that service’s terms and policies apply; check that the destination folder is not shared with people who should not see the archive. ZIP opens on almost any computer. TGZ may require additional software, such as 7-Zip on Windows. If the data exceeds your selected maximum size, Takeout creates multiple archives.
5. Retrieve and verify the archive
Use the emailed location link or open the selected cloud destination when Google finishes preparing the export. Google says completion can take from hours to days, although most people receive a link the same day; this is an estimate, not a guaranteed deadline. Before relying on the archive, open it and confirm that the expected Gemini Apps and, if selected, Gemini folders or files are present.
What a Takeout export does—and does not—preserve
- It is an archive, not a deletion command. Google explicitly states that downloading Gemini Apps activity does not delete it from Google’s servers. If your goal is removal, use Gemini Apps Activity deletion controls separately.
- It is a point-in-time export. Changes made after you request the export but before Google creates the archive may not be reflected.
- Recurring exports have an account restriction. Google says recurring Takeout exports are unavailable for people enrolled in Advanced Protection.
- Delivery location affects privacy. Once an archive reaches Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box, the destination provider’s rules govern access and retention.
What is included when you select Gemini Apps?
The Gemini Apps choice is the activity selection that Google identifies for Gemini chats, generated media and uploads. It is therefore broader than a folder containing only text replies. If preserving images, videos or files associated with a conversation matters, verify that those items appear after extraction rather than assuming that a text-only copy is complete.

Gems require a second selection. Selecting only My Activity > Gemini Apps does not mean you also selected the separate Gemini data item. For an archive intended to cover both ordinary chats and Gems, make both selections before continuing to the delivery settings.
Takeout is not a live synchronizing backup. It captures what Google can package when the export is created. A conversation changed between the request and archive creation might not appear in its newest form. For important work, keep the delivered archive and, if needed, create another export after the work is finished.
Can you download a complete Gemini conversation as a PDF?
There is no documented promise that the file-generation feature creates a full-fidelity transcript of every turn, attachment, generated artifact and internal chat element. If you need an account-level record, use Takeout. If you need a readable document based on a particular answer or set of instructions, ask Gemini to create a PDF or DOCX and inspect the result.
A generated file is useful for a report, plan, table or other finished deliverable. It is a transformation of the material in the conversation, not necessarily a forensic copy of the conversation itself. Use a clear request such as Create a PDF containing the final answer, headings and table and verify the downloaded file before closing the chat.

For a single answer, use the controls attached to that response rather than exporting your entire account.
Export a response to Google Docs
- On a computer, find the response you want to preserve.
- Open Share & export below the response.
- Choose Export to Docs.
Gemini creates a new Google Doc in Drive. This is convenient for editing and collaboration, but it saves the selected response rather than serving as a complete activity-history download.

Draft the response in Gmail
- Open Share & export below the response.
- Choose Draft in Gmail.
This creates a new Gmail draft and requires a Gmail account. The draft is then governed by Gmail’s sharing, retention and account policies.
Export an answer table to Sheets
- Use Share & export on a response that contains a table.
- Choose the Google Sheets export option when it is offered.
A table containing images cannot be exported to Sheets. If the Sheets option is missing, the content may not be an eligible table, or your Gemini app, account or Workspace administrator may not expose that destination.

How to generate and download a file from a Gemini chat
When you need a local document instead of a transcript archive, ask Gemini to format the result as a specific file. For example: Format this answer as a PDF, Turn this table into a CSV file, or Create a DOCX containing the final report. Gemini may provide a download control or offer to save the result to Drive.
Google lists these supported or potentially supported outputs:
- Workspace files such as Docs and Sheets
- DOCX
- XLSX
- CSV
- LaTeX
- Plain text (TXT)
- RTF
- Markdown
Most listed formats can be downloaded directly or exported to Drive. Availability can vary by the Gemini experience and account. Treat the result as a generated document containing the requested material, not as a guaranteed full-fidelity copy of every turn, attachment, artifact and internal chat element. For that broader history, use Takeout.
Choosing a delivery method, format and archive size
Use an email download link when you want to retrieve the archive yourself. Google says that link is active for seven days, so download the files before it expires. Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Box can be convenient when you want the archive placed in cloud storage, but each destination has its own access rules and policies.
Drive delivery uses Drive storage. That is the main storage cost or capacity issue called out in Google’s instructions: a large archive can consume available Drive space. If the export exceeds the maximum archive size you selected, Takeout splits it into multiple archives, so check that you have room for all of them.
ZIP is the broadly compatible choice and opens on almost any computer. TGZ can be smaller or convenient in some technical workflows, but Windows users may need an additional utility such as 7-Zip. Choose the format that the person or system handling the archive can open.
Third-party delivery is not a way to bypass privacy responsibilities. Before creating the export, check the destination folder’s sharing settings. After delivery, the third-party provider’s terms and policies govern the stored copy.

How to share a Gemini conversation by link
Sharing is appropriate when another person needs to read a conversation. It is not the default way to keep a private backup.
- On a computer, select Share below a response.
- Choose Share conversation.
- Review the conversation and create the link.
Google describes the result as a public link: anyone who has it can read and reshare the conversation, including people you did not send it to directly. The shared page includes generated artifacts such as Canvas documents, images and videos. Your name or account is not added to the URL or shared page, but that does not make the link private. Do not put confidential information in a chat you intend to share.
Understand the shared page’s snapshot behavior
The link represents the conversation as it appeared when you created it. Continuing or editing the original chat does not update that shared page. If you later delete the public link, access through that link stops, but the original chat remains in Gemini Apps Activity and copies of the link posted on third-party sites remain. If another person continued the shared chat, deleting your link does not delete that person’s copy from their activity.
Gems and Workspace restrictions
A shared chat created with a Gem includes the Gem’s name. The person sharing can choose whether to include the Gem’s instructions. A Workspace administrator may disable conversation sharing, so a missing sharing control can be an account policy rather than a technical fault.
Account and chat types that affect exporting
Sign-in and account selection
Past chat history is unavailable while signed out. Sign in before attempting to view, save or export activity, and use the same Google Account in Gemini and Takeout. If you have personal and Workspace accounts open at once, verify the account avatar before starting the export.

Temporary chats
A temporary chat does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or recent chats. Google’s general help says access ends after you leave a temporary chat, so do not assume it will be available later or included in a Takeout archive.
Workspace and app differences
Response destinations can differ by Gemini app, Workspace account and administrator settings. The same response may show Docs or Gmail export for one account but not another. Sharing can likewise be disabled by an administrator.
Troubleshooting an export that is missing or incomplete
Takeout contains no Gemini data
- Confirm that you used the Google Account that holds the Gemini conversations.
- Check that My Activity was selected and that Gemini Apps remained selected under All activity data included.
- If you expected Gems, confirm that the separate Gemini data item was also selected.
- Consider whether the conversation was temporary; temporary chats are not listed in Gemini Apps Activity.
The export is still processing
Takeout may take hours or days. Check the delivery destination you selected and the email account associated with the export. If you requested a large archive, multiple files may be produced because of the maximum archive-size setting.
A response export option is unavailable
Check the content type first: Sheets export requires an eligible table and does not support tables with images. Then check whether your account, Gemini app or Workspace administrator supports the destination. Use file generation or Takeout when the response-level destination is not available.

The shared link exposes more than intended
Sharing a conversation exposes the entire shared conversation and its artifacts to anyone with the link. Stop using a public link for sensitive material; delete the link if you control it, while remembering that deletion does not remove the source chat or copies already made elsewhere.

Will temporary chats appear in Takeout?
Do not assume so. Temporary chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or recent chats, and access ends after you leave the temporary chat.
Can Advanced Protection users schedule recurring exports?
Google says recurring Takeout exports are unavailable for people enrolled in Advanced Protection. A one-time export may still be the appropriate option shown in your account.
A practical preservation workflow
- Decide the scope. Choose Takeout for an account-level archive, response export for one answer, file generation for a polished downloadable document, or sharing for controlled distribution to link holders.
- Check the account. Sign in and verify the Google Account before saving anything.
- Choose a private destination. For Takeout, review folder-sharing settings at the destination. Avoid public links for confidential content.
- Choose compatible settings. Use ZIP for broad compatibility, select a maximum archive size that your storage can handle, and remember that large exports can produce multiple files.
- Verify the result. Open the created Doc, draft, generated file or archive and confirm that the expected content is present.
- Keep the delivery window in mind. Download an emailed archive link within seven days and allow hours to days for preparation.
- Handle deletion separately. Saving or downloading is not the same as removing Gemini Apps Activity from Google’s servers.
