Request a Character.AI data export while you can still sign in. On the web, go to Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data. In the mobile app, go to Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data. Character.AI says processing can take 3–4 weeks; when the export is ready, it emails a download link to the address associated with your account. That link expires seven days after the email is sent, so download it promptly.
If you are worried about losing access, prioritize both sides of that process: submit the request now and keep access to the account’s existing sign-in method and associated email while you wait. A confirmation on screen means the request was submitted; it does not mean your chats have already been downloaded or that every conversation is guaranteed to be in the archive.
How can I export my Character.AI chats?
Character.AI’s current process is to request a copy of your account data. It is not a separate save button for an individual conversation. Submit the request from the account you want to preserve, using either the website or the mobile app.
This distinction is important if you are trying to save a particular roleplay, conversation, or collection of chats before losing access. The current official instructions describe an account-data export, not a per-chat export workflow. They also do not say that you can select certain chats, request one conversation at a time, or save a particular chat as a separate file through this process.

A confirmation means the request was submitted—not that the archive is ready or already downloaded. Character.AI Help Center’s export guide, updated October 8, 2026, says processing can take 3–4 weeks. The completed export is delivered as a download link by email to the address associated with the account. That means the export is not an instant backup: the account and its delivery inbox may need to remain accessible throughout the wait.
Request the export on the web
- Sign in to the Character.AI account you want to preserve and open Profile.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Select Account.
- Select Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export Data.
- Read the confirmation pop-up. It says an email with a download link will be sent when the export is ready.
Use this route if you are already signed in through a browser. Before closing the page, make sure you saw the confirmation pop-up. The pop-up is evidence that the request was submitted, but it is not the email containing the download link and it is not the exported data itself.
Request the export in the mobile app
- Sign in to the account you want to preserve and open Profile.
- Tap the Settings icon.
- Tap Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data.
- Look for the Success banner confirming that the request was submitted.
The mobile app route ends with a Success banner, while the web route presents a confirmation pop-up. Those are different confirmation messages for the two interfaces; neither is described as a completed export notification.

Choose whichever route you can use reliably while you still have access to the account. There is no researched basis for preferring one platform if your goal is a faster export or a different kind of archive.
What happens after you submit the request?
- Wait for processing. Character.AI Help Center says exports can take 3–4 weeks to process. This is the service’s published estimate, not a promised delivery date or a guarantee that the message will arrive on a specific day.
- Watch the account’s associated email inbox. Character.AI says the download link is sent to the email address associated with the account when the export is ready. If you use email filters, check spam or junk folders as well as the main inbox.
- Download promptly after the email arrives. The download link is valid for seven days from the time the email is sent. The seven-day window begins with the sent email, not when you happen to notice or open it.
- Keep the downloaded copy somewhere deliberate. Once downloaded, identify where you saved the file and consider keeping a separate backup if the data matters to you. The official instructions do not prescribe a storage provider or a particular backup setup.
Character.AI’s guide states: “Please note that exports can take 3-4 weeks to process.” It also says: “The link will be valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent, so be sure to download your data before it expires.” Both statements are from the Character.AI Help Center export guide, updated October 8, 2026.
Think of the process as two separate milestones. First, you submit an export request and receive an on-screen confirmation. Later, after processing, the service emails a link. You then need to use that link before its seven-day validity period ends. The submission confirmation does not start the seven-day window; the email does.
A submitted request does not remove the need to retain access to the account email while you wait. If that address becomes inaccessible, you may not be able to receive the delivery email. Because Character.AI says account email changes are currently unsupported, resolve any access concern before relying on a request that may take weeks to process.

Web versus mobile: which route should you use?
The official guide documents two request routes, and the choice is mostly a matter of which interface you can access. The web path is Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data. The app path is Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data.

The confirmation also differs by platform: the web displays a pop-up explaining that an email with a link will be sent when ready, while the app shows a Success banner after submission. The Help Center does not identify a difference in archive contents, processing time, delivery address, or link validity between those routes. Do not assume switching devices will shorten the wait or cause a different export to be generated.
If you have trouble finding the option, check that you are in the correct account and that you are following the appropriate route for the interface you are using. The supplied official instructions do not document alternative menu names or a separate route for requesting only chat history. The relevant task is to reach Export Data from the account settings, then note the confirmation that appears.
What the export does—and does not—guarantee
The current help article says you can obtain a copy of your account data, but it does not specify the archive’s file format, enumerate every included field, or guarantee that every chat will appear. It also does not establish a particular format for conversation transcripts or media attachments. Do not assume the result will be JSON, HTML, a complete transcript of every conversation, or an archive that can be imported into another service.

This is a meaningful limit, not a reason to skip the request. The export is the documented account-data route available in the official instructions, but readers should be precise about what has and has not been promised. “A copy of account data” does not establish that every conversation is included, that the files will be human-readable in a particular way, or that another platform can import them.
That distinction matters if your goal is to preserve particular conversations. The documented export is the available account-data request; the official instructions do not describe a separate per-chat download procedure or a way to verify in advance that a particular conversation is included. Once the archive arrives, inspect what it contains rather than treating the request confirmation as proof that every chat has been preserved.
The official export guide also does not describe media attachment structure, a list of fields, or a way to ask for only selected data. For that reason, avoid planning around an assumed file type or a particular folder layout before the export arrives. If you have a specific preservation need, the researched official documentation does not confirm that the export will satisfy it; the responsible expectation is to request the available data copy and review the result.
Keep access to your email and sign-in method
Character.AI’s account-email FAQ, updated August 28, 2026, says changing, updating, or removing an account email is not currently supported. If you still have access to the original email, the FAQ advises continuing to use its email-verification link or the Google or Apple sign-in linked to the account. Make sure you can use the account’s existing sign-in method before you lose access to it, and submit the export request as soon as possible.
This is especially important if you are preparing for a change in email provider, losing access to an old address, or unsure how you previously signed in. The researched guidance does not describe changing the address on the Character.AI account as a workaround. It points users who retain access toward the original email verification or the linked Google/Apple sign-in.

The FAQ says that if you lose access to the account email, you need a new account; data, characters, and chat histories cannot be transferred between accounts. A new account is therefore not a substitute for exporting the existing account’s data, and the documented guidance does not offer a transfer route for its chats. If access is still available, do not wait until the account email is already gone to begin planning.
Because the export estimate is 3–4 weeks, “I can sign in today” and “I can receive an email several weeks from now” are both relevant. The first is needed to submit the export request; the second matters because the delivery link goes to the account-associated address. Once the link arrives, the seven-day expiration creates a final reason to keep checking that inbox and download promptly.
Does chat migration save a backup?
No—not in the sense of the current account-data export. Character.AI’s old/beta retirement notice, updated September 24, 2024, described moving to the newer site and app. During that transition, it said recent chats would be available there and described manual migration for chats older than six months.
That announcement is historical transition guidance. It described a migration connected with the 2024 retirement of the old/beta experience, including a manual option for older chats at that time. It is not the current account-data export procedure, does not establish a current per-chat download feature, and is not a guarantee that chats at risk now can be recovered through migration.
Keep the two concepts separate: migration referred to moving chat availability from an older Character.AI experience to the newer site or app during that transition; exporting data is the present documented request for a copy of account data. If your concern is losing account or email access today, use the current Export Data route rather than assuming the old migration process will function as a backup.
What if the export email does not arrive?
- Confirm where it should go. The delivery address is the email associated with the Character.AI account, not necessarily another address you check regularly.
- Check filtered folders. Look in spam or junk, and check any inbox rules that might move messages out of the main inbox.
- Allow for the published processing estimate. Character.AI says processing can take 3–4 weeks. A submission confirmation is not a ready-to-download notice.
- Keep the inbox accessible. The download link is emailed to the associated address and expires seven days after that email is sent.
The official guide does not state a faster processing option or a different delivery route. It also does not say that the export can be sent to an alternate email address. The prudent response is to confirm you can still access the account-associated inbox, monitor it while processing is underway, and act quickly once the delivery message arrives.
If the email account is already inaccessible, the account FAQ says Character.AI does not support changing the account email; it says a new account is needed when access to the old email is lost. That FAQ also says data, characters, and chat histories cannot be transferred between accounts. The researched guidance does not offer a workaround that would reroute an export to a replacement address, so do not assume creating a new account will restore the old account’s chats.

Regional data-access rights
Character.AI’s privacy FAQ, updated October 29, 2025, notes that data access and portability rights may depend on a user’s region and directs users to its download guide. The export steps above describe the service’s account-data request, not a legal conclusion about what rights apply to a particular person. Those rights depend on the relevant jurisdiction and circumstances.
If you are asking a legal question—such as whether you have a specific right to access or port particular information—the general privacy FAQ is not enough to decide it for every reader. The research supports only the limited statement that regional rights may differ and that Character.AI points users to its download guide. It does not establish a legal outcome for an individual, or replace checking current law applicable to that person.
