To export an OpenSCAD model for 3D printing, complete a full render with F6, check the console for errors, then choose File → Export → Export as STL and save the file with an .stl extension. Open the resulting file in a slicer, where it is converted into printer instructions.
F5 is only a fast preview. A preview that looks correct is not proof that the model can be exported or printed. The F6 render and the mesh checks performed by the receiving application are the important validation stages.
What OpenSCAD export does in a 3D-printing workflow
OpenSCAD creates a parametric model from a script. Export converts the evaluated geometry into a file that another application can read. For the usual desktop 3D-printing workflow, that file is an STL mesh.
Export is not the same as slicing. OpenSCAD produces the model file; a separate slicer positions the model, applies layer and printer settings, and generates the machine instructions required by the target printer. You should therefore inspect the exported file in the slicer before starting a print.

The reliable sequence is:
- Make sure the intended geometry is present at the top level of the script.
- Optionally use F5 for a quick visual check.
- Render with F6.
- Read the console and investigate errors.
- Use File → Export and choose the format accepted by the next application.
- Load the exported file into a slicer and prepare it for the printer.
Think of the handoff as three separate checkpoints. The script must produce geometry, OpenSCAD must complete a full render, and the receiving program must accept and interpret the resulting mesh. Passing one checkpoint does not automatically pass the next one.
Prepare the OpenSCAD model before exporting
Confirm that the script produces top-level geometry
OpenSCAD can contain module definitions, functions, calculations, and comments that do not themselves create visible geometry. Before exporting, verify that the script actually calls the module or shape you intend to print. If there is no top-level geometry, the export command has nothing to write.
This is a common source of an empty result: a module is defined correctly but never invoked, or a conditional parameter suppresses every shape. Select the intended final object explicitly and check that it is the only geometry you want in the file.

Use F5 only as an optional preview
Pressing F5 invokes OpenSCAD’s fast preview. It is useful for checking camera position, approximate proportions, and whether the expected object appears, but it is an approximation and can display artifacts. Do not use the preview as the final export result.
Allow time for the complete render
Press F6 and wait until the full geometry evaluation finishes. Complex boolean operations can take substantially longer than a preview. Export only after the render has completed and the final shape is visible.
If the interface still shows activity or the console is reporting an operation in progress, do not start the export. A file created before evaluation finishes may be incomplete or may reflect an earlier state of the design.
Watch for geometry conditions that affect a printable mesh
A model that displays in the preview can still fail during a full render or produce a mesh that another application rejects. OpenSCAD’s language documentation identifies manifold validity as relevant to generating a valid STL. Non-manifold or otherwise invalid geometry needs to be corrected in the script rather than hidden by exporting.
Use the render result and console together. A visible object with a console error is not a clean result, and a clean-looking preview does not override an error raised during F6. Correct the source geometry, render again, and only then create a replacement export.
Export an STL file from the graphical interface
- Open the design. Load the
.scadfile and confirm that the intended part is the active top-level result. - Preview if useful. Press F5 for a quick check. Treat what you see as an approximation, not as the exportable mesh.
- Render fully. Press F6. Wait for OpenSCAD to finish evaluating all geometry.
- Inspect the console. Read the messages shown by OpenSCAD. Errors can indicate failed operations, missing geometry, or a render that did not complete successfully. Resolve those issues and render again before exporting.
- Open the export menu. Select File → Export → Export as STL. The exact wording or placement can vary between releases, so use the equivalent export command in your installed version if the labels differ.
- Save with the correct extension. Give the file a descriptive name ending in
.stl, choose a location, and confirm the save operation. - Continue in a slicer. Import the STL into the slicer used for the target printer. Inspect the model there and configure the print; OpenSCAD does not create the final printer instructions.
The OpenSCAD User Manual summarizes the operation this way: “After rendering with F6, the “File –> Export” menu can be used to export as STL, OFF, AMF, DXF, SVG, CSG OR PNG (image).”

For a one-off part, this GUI route is usually the clearest because each stage is visible. If you need to export the same design repeatedly, the command line provides a more consistent process and makes the chosen output filename explicit.
Why F5 and F6 produce different results
| Action | Purpose | How to use it before export |
|---|---|---|
| F5 Preview | Fast approximation for interactive editing | Use it to spot obvious placement or modeling mistakes. Artifacts can appear, and a successful preview does not prove that a valid STL can be generated. |
| F6 Render | Full geometry evaluation | Wait for completion, read the console, and use this result as the basis for export. |
If F5 looks correct but F6 changes the shape or fails, trust neither the preview nor an earlier export. Investigate the full-render error, correct the script, and run F6 again. The difference is especially important for designs with several boolean operations, because the preview is intended to be fast rather than a definitive validity check.

STL is the documented choice for the common 3D-printing handoff, but it is not the only format OpenSCAD can write. Choose according to what the next application accepts and what the file is meant to represent.
| Format | Documented use or characteristic | Fit for a typical 3D-printing handoff |
|---|---|---|
| STL | Triangle-mesh model used in the documented export workflow | Usually the straightforward choice when the slicer accepts STL. |
| OFF | 3D geometry format listed in the export documentation | Use only when the receiving application explicitly supports it. |
| AMF | Additive-manufacturing-oriented 3D format listed by OpenSCAD | Potentially suitable when the downstream tool supports AMF; compatibility is application-dependent. |
| 3MF | Listed among output types in the command-line documentation | Use when the installed OpenSCAD build and receiving slicer both support it. |
| DXF | 2D drawing exchange output | Intended for 2D workflows rather than directly supplying a 3D printable solid. |
| SVG | 2D vector-graphics output | Useful for 2D profiles or graphics, not a replacement for a 3D model file. |
| CSG | Constructive-solid-geometry representation | Useful for exchanging OpenSCAD-style construction data when supported, not a universal slicer input. |
| PNG | Raster image output | An image of the model, not printable 3D geometry. |
The presence of a format in OpenSCAD’s documentation does not mean that every release exposes it in the same menu or that every slicer accepts it. Check the import list of the application that will receive the file. If that application accepts STL and you have no specific reason to choose another format, STL is the least ambiguous handoff.
Do not select DXF, SVG, or PNG merely because they appear in the export list when your goal is a solid 3D print. Those outputs serve two-dimensional drawing, vector, or image workflows. OFF, AMF, 3MF, and CSG remain dependent on support in both the installed OpenSCAD version and the downstream program.
Export from the command line
Command-line export is useful for repeatable builds, automated parameter sweeps, and designs that must be generated without opening the graphical interface. The -o option names the output file, and its extension selects the output format.
Basic STL command
openscad -o model.stl model.scad
This command reads model.scad, evaluates it, and writes an STL file named model.stl. Use a full or relative path when the files are in different directories, for example:
openscad -o exports/bracket.stl designs/bracket.scad
Create the destination directory first if your shell or operating system will not create it automatically. A successful command still requires you to inspect the resulting mesh in the slicer. Keep the input and output names distinct and descriptive so that a later parameterized run cannot be mistaken for an earlier revision.
Set a parameter with -D
The documented -D option defines a value at export time. The script must use the variable for the option to change the model. For example, a script that branches on a quality variable can be exported with:

openscad -o model.stl -D 'quality="production"' model.scad
On shells with different quoting rules, adjust the surrounding quotation marks while preserving the value passed to OpenSCAD. You can generate multiple variants by changing the definition and output filename for each run. The option does not create a parameter automatically; it only supplies a value to logic already present in the script.
Check options on the installed release
OpenSCAD’s command-line format-selection behavior has differed among versions. If an option or extension behaves unexpectedly, run openscad --help on the installed version and use the syntax it reports. Do not assume that a command copied from documentation for another release exposes identical switches or menu formats.
For an automated batch, verify one output interactively first. Open that file in the intended slicer, then repeat the command with the required parameter values and unique filenames. This catches an unsupported extension or a script branch that produces no geometry before many files are generated.
Inspect the exported model in a slicer
After export, open the file in the slicer that will prepare the print. Confirm that the complete part appears, that its scale and orientation are sensible, and that the slicer does not report an invalid or empty mesh. If the slicer offers a repair function, treat a repair as a diagnostic signal: return to the OpenSCAD script and correct the underlying geometry when possible.
Pay particular attention to manifold validity. A mesh can exist as a file yet still contain gaps, self-intersections, or other conditions that prevent reliable interpretation as a solid. OpenSCAD’s language documentation specifically calls manifold validity relevant to producing a valid STL. The slicer’s analysis is therefore a separate check after OpenSCAD’s F6 render and export.

Resolve warnings, confirm that the intended complete part is present, and then continue with the slicer’s printer-specific preparation. OpenSCAD has completed its role once it has produced the model file; layer settings and machine instructions belong to the downstream workflow.
Troubleshooting export problems
“Nothing to export” or an empty file
- Confirm that the script invokes a module or primitive at the top level instead of only defining it.
- Run F6 rather than relying on an F5 preview.
- Read the console for errors that stopped geometry generation.
- Check that conditional statements and parameter values did not turn every shape off.
- Make sure the export is being run on the intended file and current saved version.
Once the intended geometry is visible after a completed F6 render, repeat the export operation.
F5 looks right, but F6 fails or changes the shape
This is consistent with the difference between an approximation and a full evaluation. Use the F6 result as authoritative for export. Examine the console, identify the operation that fails or produces invalid geometry, edit the script, and render again. Do not export the earlier preview and expect the slicer to correct a modeling error.
The exported file is rejected or repaired by another application
- Verify that the receiving tool supports the format and that the filename extension matches the selected format.
- Check the mesh for manifold validity and other geometry defects.
- Re-render with F6 after correcting the source script, then export a new file.
- Load the replacement file into the slicer and confirm that the diagnostic message is gone.
Export success alone is not a guarantee of a successful physical print; the downstream application must be able to interpret the mesh and prepare valid printer instructions.

The desired format is missing from the menu
Format availability can vary by OpenSCAD release and by whether you are using the graphical interface or command line. Consult the export choices shown by your installed build and check the receiving application’s supported formats. If both tools support STL, use the STL path described above instead of forcing an unavailable format.
The command-line export uses the wrong format
Check the extension supplied to -o and review openscad --help. The command-line guide documents extension-based format selection, while also noting that output-format handling has changed among versions. Use an explicit filename such as part.stl rather than relying on a generic name without an extension.
Only one of several intended parts appears
OpenSCAD exports the geometry produced by the current top-level script. If separate parts are hidden behind a selector or conditional, set that selector deliberately for each export. If the script emits an assembly when you wanted individual pieces, restructure or parameterize the top-level output before exporting again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export multiple parts from one script
A single script can be structured so that a parameter selects which part is generated. The OpenSCAD FAQ describes running separate command-line exports with that parameter set to different values. This is an automation technique for a parameterized design, not a requirement for exporting one ordinary part.
A typical pattern is:
openscad -o part_a.stl -D 'part="A"' assembly.scad
openscad -o part_b.stl -D 'part="B"' assembly.scad
The script must contain logic that uses part to emit only the requested geometry. Give every invocation a different output filename so one export does not overwrite another. Render and inspect each resulting file in the slicer separately. If a selector value is misspelled or unsupported, the command can complete without producing the intended part, so verify each output rather than trusting the filename.
A repeatable export checklist
- The intended object is called at the script’s top level.
- F5, if used, is treated only as a quick preview.
- F6 has completed without unresolved console errors.
- The exported filename has the extension required by the chosen format.
- The selected format is accepted by the next application.
- The file opens in the slicer as the complete intended model.
- The slicer reports no unresolved mesh or manifold problem.
- Printer preparation is completed in the slicer rather than assumed to occur during OpenSCAD export.
Version and interface considerations
The workflow—full render, console check, export, then slicer preparation—is stable in principle, but menu labels and available output formats can differ between OpenSCAD releases. The official documentation surfaced for this workflow includes older manual snapshots, so verify the exact labels and command-line options against the version installed on your computer.
If the graphical menu and command-line behavior disagree, use the options reported by that installation and confirm the resulting file by opening it in the receiving application. This avoids treating a documented format list as a promise that every release exposes every format identically.
Bottom line
For a normal 3D-printing handoff, press F6, resolve any console errors, choose File → Export → Export as STL, and save an .stl file. Then inspect that file in a slicer. F5 is a convenience preview, not the final validation step, and a successful export does not remove the need to check mesh validity and downstream compatibility.

Do I need to press F5 before exporting an STL?
No. F5 is optional and provides only a fast preview. The required validation step is the full F6 render, followed by a console check and the export command.

Why can a model look correct in F5 but fail during export?
F5 is an approximation that can display artifacts. F6 performs the full geometry evaluation. If F6 changes the shape or reports an error, correct the script and export only after a successful full render.
What should I do if OpenSCAD says there is nothing to export?
Check that a module or primitive is actually invoked at the script’s top level, that conditions have not disabled every shape, and that F6 completed without console errors. Then render again and repeat the export.
Is STL the only format OpenSCAD can export?
No. OpenSCAD documentation lists STL, OFF, AMF, DXF, SVG, CSG, and PNG, while the command-line guide also lists 3MF. Select a format only when the receiving application supports it; DXF, SVG, and PNG are not substitutes for a 3D printable solid.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I export OpenSCAD models without opening the GUI?
Yes. The documented pattern is openscad -o model.stl model.scad. The output extension selects the format, and -D can provide parameter values for repeatable or automated variants.
How can I export multiple parts from one OpenSCAD script?
Structure the script so a parameter selects the part, then run separate command-line exports with different -D values and unique output filenames. Inspect every resulting file separately in the slicer.
Why does another application reject or repair my exported file?
Confirm that the application supports the chosen format, that the extension matches it, and that the mesh is manifold. Repair the source geometry, render with F6 again, export a replacement, and recheck it in the receiving tool.
Does exporting an STL prepare the printer instructions?
No. OpenSCAD creates the model file. A slicer must import that file, apply printer and layer settings, and generate the machine instructions used by the printer.
