To back up Google Maps saved lists, use Google Takeout and select Saved. Download the archive, then check that it contains the lists and entries you expect. The export can give you a spreadsheet-friendly record, but it should not be treated as a complete set of coordinates or as a ready-to-import map file.
Export saved places with Google Takeout
-
Sign in to the Google account that contains your saved places, then open Google Takeout.
-
In the product and data selection, choose Saved. Google Maps Help’s surfaced instructions direct users to check Saved for this export. Do not assume that choosing a similarly named Maps category will export your saved lists.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Continue through Takeout’s export settings and create the export. When the archive is ready, download it. Delivery timing and available settings can vary; the instructions cited here do not establish a guaranteed wait time or a fixed set of settings.

Choose the right export category
Saved is the category to look for when your goal is to export saved lists. A recently updated walkthrough distinguishes it from Maps (your places), which it describes as covering reviews and exporting in GeoJSON. Older Google Maps Community guidance also described Saved as the Takeout choice for custom and default lists, including Starred, Favorites, and Want To Go, and noted that Saved lists were missing from the Maps (your places) export. Because the community guidance is older and export behavior may change, verify the files in your own archive rather than relying on the category name alone.

What the exported CSVs contain—and what they do not
A third-party walkthrough updated September 25, 2026 reports that the Saved export contains a separate CSV for each list, with Title, Note, and URL fields. It reports no dedicated latitude/longitude or address columns. Google’s surfaced Help instructions confirm the Saved export flow, but do not establish this exact schema as an official guarantee. Inspect your own archive before building a process that depends on particular filenames or columns.

Those fields can preserve a readable record of place names, your notes, and links. They do not, by themselves, make the CSV a full coordinate dataset or guarantee that another mapping service can import it as a map. Some URLs may contain information that can help recover coordinates, but not every link necessarily does. Parsing links can therefore leave gaps; geocoding place names can also select the wrong result when names are ambiguous.

For a map migration, first check what the destination accepts. If it requires coordinates or a particular map format, determine how you will obtain those data and review converted entries individually, especially when names are ambiguous or URLs lack coordinates.

What not to assume about the export
-
Do not assume Takeout automatically creates KML, GPX, or another ready-to-import map file.
-
Do not assume every saved-place URL contains coordinates or that the CSV can always be imported directly into Google My Maps or another mapping service.
-
Do not assume every list or entry appeared just because an export completed. Check the archive and sample its contents.
