Microsoft Edge does not document a single, complete export that captures every extension, private extension setting, and extension-stored data. The dependable approach is layered: identify the correct Edge profile, enable the profile’s sync categories (including Extensions), export separately documented data such as desktop passwords when needed, reinstall extensions from supported stores, and follow each extension publisher’s recovery instructions. Verify the result on the destination device before removing anything from the original.
That distinction matters because syncing is not the same as downloading a portable backup file. Edge’s documented file-based workflows cover particular data types, while extension-specific state can vary by publisher and is not covered by a universal Microsoft restore procedure.
What you can preserve in Edge—and what you cannot assume
Edge profiles are separate containers for personalized settings, bookmarks, extensions, themes, and preferences. If you use more than one profile, each profile can contain a different extension set and different data. A backup made while the wrong profile is active can therefore look successful while omitting the items you intended to keep. Microsoft explains profile separation in Sign in and create multiple profiles in Microsoft Edge.

For a signed-in Edge profile, Microsoft lists favorites, passwords, addresses, browsing history, extensions, and more among the data that can sync between devices. The controls are available under Settings > Profiles > Sync. The categories shown can depend on the current Edge version and account configuration, so inspect the switches in the profile you are actually migrating. The official controls are described in Change and customize sync settings in Microsoft Edge.

Data that does not have a universal export guarantee
Microsoft’s published Edge guidance does not promise a complete export-and-restore process for arbitrary extension settings or data. An extension may offer its own account synchronization, export command, or recovery instructions, but that behavior belongs to the individual publisher. Installing the same extension on another computer is not proof that its private state will return.
Why a profile copy is not the same as a supported backup
Windows Backup guidance points users to Edge sync for Edge preferences and favorites. It does not establish Windows Backup as a complete archive of extension state. Likewise, the documented password and favorites workflows are selected-data operations, not a portable image of an entire Edge profile.
Choose the preservation route for each data type
Use the route that matches the data you need. These methods differ in whether they sync through an account, create a file, support an import operation, expose sensitive information, and come with Microsoft documentation.

Step 1: Identify the profile that owns the extensions
Do this before changing sync settings or exporting anything. Edge profiles keep their own extensions and personalized data, so the profile name and account must match the material you want to preserve.

- Open Edge and select the profile icon near the address bar.
- Review the available profiles and switch to the one where the required extensions are installed.
- Open the extensions management page and make a written list of the extensions you expect to see on the destination device. Include extensions that are disabled, because a disabled extension can still have settings or data associated with its profile.
- Confirm the signed-in account shown for that profile. If you use separate work and personal accounts, do not assume that enabling sync in one profile affects the other.
When a migration involves multiple profiles, repeat the process for each profile rather than treating Edge as one combined container.
Step 2: Review Edge sync for that profile
- In the correct profile, open Settings > Profiles > Sync.
- Check whether sync is enabled for the profile.
- Review the available categories and turn on Extensions if it is offered and you want the extension set synchronized.
- Enable other categories you intentionally need, such as favorites, passwords, addresses, or browsing history.
- Leave the settings page only after noting which categories are enabled. The visible list can change with Edge and account configuration, so rely on what the current profile displays.
Sync reduces the work required on another signed-in device, but it should not be treated as a file you can place on offline storage. The Microsoft instructions describe synchronization between devices; they do not describe downloading one complete archive of extension state.
Step 3: Export passwords only when you need a separate copy
Edge’s desktop password manager can export saved passwords to CSV. This is useful when you are moving credentials to a destination that needs an explicit import, or when a recovery plan requires a separate copy in addition to sync.

- Save the CSV temporarily in a location protected from other users and from automatic cloud sharing.
- Use the destination browser’s documented password-import workflow if an import is required. Edge documents password import through Import browser data.
- After confirming that the destination contains the required passwords, permanently delete the CSV from the original location and empty any recycle or trash location that still contains it.
Microsoft’s warning is explicit: “Passwords exported to a CSV are not protected and will be visible to anyone who can see the exported file.” Treat the file as sensitive plaintext. Do not email it to yourself, leave it in a shared folder, or keep it as a casual long-term backup.

If passwords are already syncing correctly, an extra CSV may add risk without adding value. Create one only for a specific migration or recovery need, and remove it immediately after verification.
Step 4: Handle favorites separately from extension data
Favorites are Edge profile data, not private extension state. Microsoft documents importing favorites from an HTML file and importing passwords from CSV through Import browser data. Those workflows are useful when a destination profile needs selected browser data, but they do not create a general extension backup.
- Decide whether favorites will arrive through the signed-in profile’s sync or through the documented HTML import route.
- If you have an HTML favorites file, open the destination profile’s Import browser data workflow and choose the favorites HTML option.
- After import, open several folders and links to confirm that the expected hierarchy and destinations are present.
Keep the favorites operation separate in your checklist. Seeing favorites on the new device does not demonstrate that an extension’s private settings or stored data were restored.
Step 5: Check every extension for its own recovery method
Before uninstalling anything or wiping the old computer, open the publisher’s help or settings page for each important extension. Look specifically for account sign-in, cloud synchronization, an export or backup command, a restore command, or instructions for moving data to another profile.

Questions to answer for each extension
- Does the extension require a separate account, and is that account signed in on the source profile?
- Is there an explicit export file, and what format and security precautions does the publisher specify?
- Does the publisher state which settings or data are synchronized?
- Is restore performed automatically after sign-in, or does it require an import command?
- Are there settings stored only on the current device or profile?
- What version of the extension and Edge does the publisher support for recovery?
Record the answers and any recovery steps before making changes. If the publisher provides no export or sync feature, preserve the source profile until the destination has been tested; do not infer that reinstalling will recover private data.
Step 6: Reinstall extensions on the destination
When you set up a new computer or a fresh Edge profile, install extensions from a supported source. Microsoft’s extension guidance covers adding extensions from Edge Add-ons or the Chrome Web Store and managing them in Edge: Add, turn off, or remove extensions in Microsoft Edge.
- Sign in to the destination Edge profile that should receive the extensions.
- Allow sync to complete if Extensions is enabled for that profile.
- For anything that does not appear, open the supported extension store and install the extension again.
- Sign in to the extension’s own account, or use its documented import or restore command, if the publisher provides one.
- Open the extension and compare its settings and data with the source profile.
Installation and state restoration are separate operations. Microsoft documents how to add, turn off, and remove extensions, but does not state that reinstalling restores an extension’s private settings or data.
Step 7: Verify before retiring the old profile or device
Verification is the point at which you discover whether a particular extension’s state actually made the trip. Keep the original profile available until these checks pass.

- The destination is using the intended Edge profile and account.
- Every required extension appears, including extensions that were previously disabled.
- Each important extension opens without an account or configuration error.
- Publisher-specific settings, saved lists, templates, or other stored information that you rely on are present.
- Favorites open correctly if you imported them.
- Password entries are present if you performed a password migration.
- The temporary password CSV has been permanently deleted after verification.
Test an extension’s primary task rather than only checking that its toolbar icon is visible. A visible icon proves installation, not recovery of the extension’s private state.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
The extension is missing on the new device
Switch to the profile that originally contained it and confirm that the destination is signed in to the corresponding account. Recheck Settings > Profiles > Sync and the Extensions switch. If the extension still does not appear, install it from Edge Add-ons or the Chrome Web Store, then apply the publisher’s recovery process.
The extension is installed but its settings are empty
Do not assume that a failed sync has occurred. First check whether the extension offers its own account, export, or restore feature. The extension may keep private state outside the categories that Edge documents as syncable. Keep the source profile intact while you contact the publisher or test its documented recovery steps.

Sync is unavailable or a category is not shown
The available toggles can depend on the current Edge and account configuration. Confirm that you are in the intended profile, that the profile is signed in, and that Edge is current. If the required category remains unavailable, use any extension-specific export or recovery method provided by its publisher and treat the destination as unverified until its data is checked.
You accidentally exposed the password CSV
Assume every password in that file was readable by anyone who could access it. Delete the CSV permanently, then change affected passwords according to the security policy for those accounts. Do not retain the file merely because the migration is complete.
Windows Backup restored Edge preferences but not extension data
This outcome is consistent with Microsoft’s published scope: Windows Backup guidance directs Edge preferences and favorites users to Edge sync and does not promise a complete extension-state archive. Use the profile’s sync settings and the individual publisher’s recovery instructions instead.
A practical migration checklist
- List the Edge profile or profiles that contain the extensions.
- For each profile, note the signed-in account and confirm the extension list.
- Open Settings > Profiles > Sync and record the enabled categories.
- Enable Extensions and any other categories you intentionally need.
- Export passwords only if a separate CSV is required for the destination; protect it as plaintext.
- Prepare the documented favorites HTML import route if sync is not the chosen method.
- Read the recovery instructions for every extension whose private data matters.
- Set up the destination profile, allow sync to run, and reinstall missing extensions from supported stores.
- Use publisher-specific sign-in, import, or restore commands.
- Test the recovered settings and data before deleting the source profile or device.
- Permanently delete any password CSV after successful verification.
The safe expectation for Edge extension backups
Edge sync is the supported first step for moving an extension set and other profile categories between signed-in devices. Password CSV and favorites HTML workflows are useful for their named data types, with the password file requiring strict handling. For settings or data private to an extension, the only reliable scope is the scope stated by that extension’s publisher. Plan the move as a profile-and-extension verification exercise, not as a guaranteed one-click archive and restore.
