To move an Adobe project into a free design app, keep the original Adobe file as your master and export a separate copy in a format the destination app can read. For vector artwork, try SVG; for page delivery, use PDF; for reusable text, export a text format; and for a flattened image, choose PNG or JPEG. No export format guarantees that every layer, effect, font, link, or editability feature will survive. Open the exported copy in the receiving app and check it there before relying on it.
What “export” can—and cannot—preserve
An Adobe project file is not just a picture of the finished design. It may contain editable objects, text, layers, effects, links to placed assets, multiple pages or artboards, and application-specific information. A file that looks identical in a preview may have lost some or all of those working parts.
Think of export as creating a handoff for a particular purpose, not converting a project into a universally editable equivalent. Choose the handoff based on what matters most:

- Deliver pages or preserve a visual layout: use PDF, then check how the receiving app interprets it.
- Reuse copy: export story text in a text format rather than trying to extract it from a page image.
- Deliver an image: use PNG or JPEG, understanding that the result is rendered pixels rather than the complete source project.
Keep the native Adobe working file as the authoritative editable master. Adobe recommends retaining Illustrator artwork in AI format while work is in progress, then saving or exporting the format needed for handoff (Adobe’s Illustrator saving guidance). Use a duplicate or export copy for conversion so that experiments in another app cannot overwrite the source.

Choose a format before you export
The best file depends on the content and the receiving app, not simply on which format appears in the export menu. These options serve different roles; none preserves every kind of project information in every application.

For images, Adobe describes PNG as supporting transparency and lossless compression, while JPEG uses lossy compression (Illustrator export format guidance). A flattened export can preserve how artwork looks at the chosen output size, but it does not retain the original object-by-object editing structure.
Illustrator: hand off vector artwork to Inkscape
For a design made in Illustrator that you want to keep editing in Inkscape, export an SVG copy first. Inkscape’s primary format is SVG, and it supports importing and exporting SVG (Inkscape’s supported-formats overview). This is the most practical first interchange format to try for vector work, but it is not a promise of feature parity.
Export an SVG copy
- Preserve the source. Save the working project as an AI file and keep it unchanged as the master.
- Choose the handoff route. In Illustrator, use File > Export > Export As to create a separate SVG file. Illustrator also documents SVG among its export formats (Illustrator export options).
- Check the artboard scope. The standard SVG save flow exports the active artboard. If the project has several artboards or you need a batch of assets, use Export for Screens or explicitly select the artboards you want. Adobe documents batch export choices through File > Export > Export for Screens, including SVG and other formats (Adobe’s Export for Screens guidance).
- Open the copy in Inkscape. Inspect the document itself rather than judging only a thumbnail or file preview. Save any changes as a new file in the destination app’s workflow.
Check features that can change during transfer
Pay special attention to gradients, transparency, effects, text, and placed images. Inkscape’s guidance for Illustrator users describes limitations in some AI and PDF content, including approximation of gradient meshes and differences in transparency modes (Inkscape’s Illustrator-user notes). These differences can be subtle: a complex mesh may appear close at a glance but no longer behave like the original editable object.

- Compare gradients and blends at normal viewing size and at a closer zoom.
- Check objects with opacity, blend modes, masks, and other transparency effects.
- Confirm that text wraps and aligns as intended, and that the intended fonts are available in the receiving app.
- Look for missing or altered placed images, clipping, and changes to the page or artboard bounds.
- Test whether important objects remain editable in the way you need; visual similarity alone does not prove equivalent structure.
When PDF is the better Illustrator handoff
Use PDF when the priority is sharing or page output rather than editing individual vector elements. When saving a PDF from Illustrator, review the Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities option if retaining Illustrator data inside the PDF matters. That embedded data can help when the file returns to Illustrator, but it does not mean an external app will reproduce every Illustrator-native feature. The receiving software may interpret effects differently (Adobe’s Illustrator saving guidance; Inkscape’s Illustrator-user notes).
If your goal is only to place or publish the design as an image, export PNG or JPEG instead. Illustrator also documents PDF, SVG, PNG, and JPEG among its artwork export choices (Illustrator export options). Choose PNG when transparency or lossless pixels are important; use JPEG when photographic output and lossy compression are acceptable. The appropriate pixel dimensions depend on the destination: the cited guidance does not establish one resolution that is right for every screen, print job, or placement.
Photoshop: decide whether you need layers or a finished image
For a Photoshop handoff to GIMP or another free image editor, keep the PSD or PSB master and work from a separate copy. GIMP’s developer documentation lists PSD and PSB among the formats it covers (GIMP’s image-format documentation). Format support does not guarantee that all Photoshop-specific features or layer effects will look or behave the same after opening.

Test the editable handoff
- Make a representative copy of the PSD or PSB, rather than risking the original project.
- Open the copy in the destination image editor.
- Compare its appearance with Photoshop, including layer visibility and the result of important effects.
- Check that the layers and other editing elements you rely on are present and usable before continuing the project in the new app.
A small test using a representative file can reveal problems before you commit to transferring a large project. If a particular effect or layer is central to the design, verify that element directly; successful opening of the file alone is not proof that every feature survived.

Export a flattened image instead
If nobody needs to edit the Photoshop structure, choose a rendered output. PNG is the better fit when transparency or lossless pixel compression matters; JPEG is appropriate when photographic appearance is the priority and lossy compression is acceptable. Both are image deliverables, not replacements for a layered Photoshop project (Adobe’s PNG and JPEG format descriptions).
GIMP can rasterize SVG, but rasterizing turns vector artwork into pixels rather than preserving vector-path editing. If you need to continue modifying vector paths, use a vector editor such as Inkscape instead of treating an image editor as a vector-layout replacement (GIMP’s image-format documentation).
InDesign: separate the page layout from its text
Keep the INDD file as the layout master. The right export depends on whether the next person needs to see the pages, edit the layout, or reuse only the writing. Those are different handoffs, and trying to use one file for all three can lead to unnecessary conversion problems.

Export PDF when you need a document-style page handoff. Use JPEG or PNG when the recipient needs an image or preview of a page, spread, or object rather than an editable layout. Adobe’s InDesign export guidance covers pages, objects, and text, including JPEG and PNG workflows (Adobe’s InDesign export guidance). A raster page image preserves appearance at its exported dimensions, not editable text frames and page elements.

For text to reuse
When the story text matters more than the page design, export it as RTF or another text format. Plain text is appropriate if you need the words without character formatting; Adobe Tagged Text is the documented option in the text-export workflow when retaining formatting matters (Adobe’s InDesign export guidance). Text export is not a page-layout conversion: it does not recreate the design, images, or full placement of the original story.
For layout exchange with a free app
IDML is Adobe’s documented interchange format for cross-version exchange in InDesign (Adobe’s list of supported InDesign formats). You can try it as a layout handoff, but that documented purpose does not establish that any particular free layout app will recreate the document perfectly.
An older Scribus 1.5.2 data sheet lists IDML and IDMS among supported inputs (Scribus 1.5.2 data sheet). Because this is version-specific, do not assume the same support or behavior in a different Scribus release. Check the installed version’s capabilities and test an IDML copy before using the route for a production layout. Inspect page dimensions, text flow, fonts, images, and spacing after import.
Use a quick decision path for your project
- Do you need to keep editing the design? Preserve the Adobe master. For Illustrator vector artwork headed to a vector editor, try SVG. For Photoshop work, test a PSD or PSB copy in the destination image editor. For an InDesign layout, test IDML only after confirming the receiving app and version can handle it.
- Do you mainly need the visual result? Use PDF for page output or sharing. Use PNG or JPEG when the recipient needs an image rather than a document or editable project.
- Do you mainly need the words? Export InDesign story text as RTF or another text format. Select the text workflow based on whether retaining formatting is important.
- Does the design include several artboards or assets? In Illustrator, use Export for Screens or explicitly choose the artboards instead of assuming a standard single-artboard SVG export will include everything.
- Will the result be used for print or another production workflow? Follow the printer’s or receiving party’s supplied requirements. There is no single universal color-management or print-ready setting established for every app, printer, and job.
Inspect the handoff in the receiving app
An export is not finished just because the destination app opens the file. Use a practical check that reflects what the recipient will actually do with it. The exact priority varies by project, but the following checks catch common differences between a source document and its handoff:

- Document scope: Confirm the intended artboard, page, spread, and page dimensions are present. Check for cropped artwork or omitted pages.
- Text: Look for changed wrapping, alignment, spacing, and font substitution. Confirm that text is still editable if that is part of the handoff requirement.
- Effects and transparency: Compare gradients, masks, opacity, blend modes, and effects with the source. Inspect the areas where those features overlap.
- Images and links: Verify that placed or embedded images appear and that their size, crop, and placement are correct.
- Color and output: Check the result in the context of its intended use. For a production job, use the recipient’s specifications rather than relying on a generic preset.
- Editability: Select key elements in the receiving app. Check that the structures you need to change still exist instead of assuming that a visually correct preview means the file remains fully editable.
For important work, compare the output with the original Adobe project at the same viewing scale, then make a small test edit in the receiving app and undo it. That confirms not just that the file opens, but that the recipient can perform the kind of edit the handoff is meant to support.
Common export problems and what to do
The file opens, but the artwork looks different
First identify which feature changed: text, transparency, gradients, a mask, or a placed image. Revisit the source and simplify or replace only the affected feature if the recipient needs it to remain editable. If matching appearance is more important than continued editing, use a PDF or a rendered image for delivery, while keeping the editable Adobe master separately.
The exported file contains only one artboard
Check whether you used Illustrator’s standard SVG save flow, which exports the active artboard. Export the required artboards explicitly or use Export for Screens for a batch of artboards and assets (Adobe’s Export for Screens guidance).
The destination app can open the file but cannot edit what matters
Opening confirms that the app can read something in the file; it does not prove that its feature set matches the source app’s. Try the format meant for the kind of content you are transferring—SVG for vector editing, a supported layered image format for image editing, or a text export for reusable copy. If the recipient only needs the appearance, choose an output format intended for viewing or placement instead of promising editability.
The layout is not reliable after IDML import
Check the receiving app’s installed version and test a duplicate. Scribus support evidence for IDML cited here is specifically for version 1.5.2, not a general guarantee for later releases or every layout document. If the imported layout is not dependable, deliver a PDF for viewing and export the text separately when the recipient needs the copy.
Keep the master and handoff files distinct
A simple file-naming habit prevents confusion after conversion. Keep the editable Adobe project in its native format, then label each handoff by its intended use—for example, a vector-editing copy, a page PDF, or a flattened image. Avoid treating a converted file as a replacement master until you have verified that the destination app preserves the specific structure and features your project depends on.
That distinction also makes revisions safer: update the source project, create a fresh handoff when needed, and inspect that new output in its destination app. If a recipient asks for a different outcome—editable artwork rather than a visual proof, for example—choose a format for that new purpose rather than reusing an export that was made for something else.
