On a Mac, export an MP3 or WAV from GarageBand with Share > Export Song to Disk, choose MP3 or WAVE, set the quality and destination, then click Export. On an iPhone or iPad, open My Songs, touch and hold the song, choose Share > Song, select audio quality, and save the resulting audio file through Files. The Mac dialog explicitly lists MP3 and WAVE; Apple’s current iPhone and iPad instructions document audio-quality choices and identify uncompressed WAV or AIFF as the best-results options for its SoundCloud workflow, but they do not promise that every iOS release exposes an MP3 choice.
Choose the instructions for your device
GarageBand uses different export interfaces on macOS and iOS/iPadOS. The correct steps depend on where the project is open:
| Device | Command or gesture | Result | Format certainty in Apple’s documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac | Share > Export Song to Disk | A stereo audio file saved to a location you choose | The format menu explicitly includes MP3 and WAVE, along with AAC and AIFF. |
| iPhone or iPad | In My Songs, touch and hold a song, then choose Share > Song | An audio file saved through the iOS/iPadOS share sheet, such as Files or iCloud Drive | Apple documents audio-quality choices and uncompressed WAV or AIFF for its SoundCloud example; it does not enumerate every format in the current picker. |
Use Song when the recipient only needs to listen, upload, or play the finished track. Use Project when another GarageBand user must continue editing the tracks, plug-ins, automation, and arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExport an MP3 or WAV from GarageBand on Mac
These menu names match Apple’s GarageBand for Mac guide for version 10.4.14. Menu labels may differ in later versions, so check the version shown in your app if the interface does not match.

1. Open the finished project
Launch GarageBand, open the project, and check the arrangement before exporting. Mute or solo tracks as needed, confirm that the playhead and cycle range are where you expect, and save the project. Export renders what GarageBand currently plays; it does not create an editable copy of the session.
2. Open the disk-export dialog
- Choose Share in the menu bar.
- Select Export Song to Disk.
The dialog contains the file name, destination, format, quality, and an option to limit the export to a cycle area or selected regions.
3. Name the file and choose a destination
Enter a name in Save As. Choose a folder from Where; the destination menu can include a local folder or iCloud Drive. Pick a location that you can find later and that has enough free space for the rendered file.
Recommended Free Tools
4. Select MP3 or WAVE
Open the format menu and choose:
- MP3 for a compressed delivery file when the receiving service, device, or person specifically asks for MP3.
- WAVE for an uncompressed WAV export when a platform requests WAV or you need an uncompressed master for a subsequent workflow.
GarageBand also lists AAC and AIFF. They are alternatives, not required choices for this task. If you need both a delivery copy and an uncompressed copy, export twice with the same project and select a different format each time.
5. Set the quality
Choose a quality setting from the dialog. The appropriate setting depends on the destination’s requirements and the purpose of the file. Apple’s documentation identifies the available format choices but does not establish one universal bit rate that every upload service requires. If a destination publishes a required setting, follow that requirement; otherwise, choose the quality that fits your storage and delivery constraints rather than assuming one number is mandatory.
Format and quality answer related but different questions: the format is the kind of file you create, while the quality setting controls the export option available for that format. A destination that specifically asks for MP3 or WAV determines the format choice first; its published specifications, if any, should guide the quality selection. Avoid guessing an exact bit rate from a general recommendation for a different service.
6. Decide whether to export the whole song or a range
For a complete song, leave Export cycle area, or length of selected regions (if Cycle is turned off) unchecked. To render only a section, enable it and verify the yellow cycle range or the selected regions before exporting. A short export is often caused by this checkbox being enabled unintentionally.

7. Export
- Click Export.
- Wait for GarageBand to finish rendering.
- Open the destination folder and play the file in the Music app or another audio player.
GarageBand exports the project as a stereo audio file. During this export, Apple says GarageBand trims silence at the beginning and end. Therefore, an exported file can start or finish sooner than the project timeline if the outer regions contain only silence; that behavior is expected.
Export a song from GarageBand on iPhone or iPad
GarageBand for iPhone and GarageBand for iPad use the Share sheet rather than the Mac disk-export dialog. Apple’s iPhone guide lists GarageBand 2.3.18; labels can differ in later versions.
1. Open the My Songs browser
Leave the track editor if necessary so you are viewing My Songs, where your GarageBand projects are listed.
2. Start sharing the song as audio
- Touch and hold the song you want to export.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Song, not Project.
Song creates a stereo audio file. Project creates an editable GarageBand project intended for continued work in GarageBand.
3. Choose quality and optional metadata
Select the audio quality offered by your version of GarageBand. You can enter artist, composer, and title metadata when the share screen provides those fields. Apple’s SoundCloud instructions say that, for best results in that workflow, you should choose Uncompressed (WAV) or Uncompressed (AIFF).
Apple Support’s article “Share GarageBand for iOS and Logic Pro for iPad songs to SoundCloud,” published December 14, 2023, specifically recommends those uncompressed choices for its SoundCloud example. That recommendation is tied to that workflow; it does not establish one required format for every destination.
Do not assume that the current iPhone or iPad picker always contains an MP3 option. Apple’s general sharing instructions describe choosing audio quality without listing every output format, so the exact choices can vary by release. If MP3 is required and your iOS/iPadOS picker does not offer it, create an uncompressed file and use a separate, compatible conversion workflow rather than renaming the extension.

MP3 versus WAV: which export should you choose?
| Need | Choose | Reason | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| A site or person explicitly requests an MP3 | MP3 | It satisfies the named delivery format and produces a compressed file. | GarageBand for Mac directly provides MP3. Availability in the iPhone/iPad picker is not established for every current release. |
| An uncompressed upload or master is requested | WAV/WAVE | WAVE is GarageBand’s Mac label for an uncompressed WAV export. | Apple’s iOS SoundCloud instructions recommend Uncompressed (WAV) or Uncompressed (AIFF) for best results in that example. |
| You need the smallest practical delivery file | MP3, if accepted by the destination | Compression generally reduces file size compared with an uncompressed export. | The destination’s own format and quality rules take priority. |
| You need to preserve an editable session | Project | A project retains GarageBand’s editable arrangement rather than rendering only stereo audio. | This is not an MP3 or WAV file and requires GarageBand-compatible software to edit. |
Neither Apple’s cited Mac guide nor its SoundCloud instructions establishes a single best format for every listener, upload service, or archive. Decide from the destination’s named requirement, whether an uncompressed file is wanted, and practical delivery limits. Avoid treating “WAV always sounds better” as a universal rule; the documented evidence supports format availability and Apple’s specific uncompressed recommendation, not every platform’s policy.
A useful order of decisions is: first find out what the recipient or upload service accepts, then decide whether you need a compressed delivery copy or an uncompressed file, and finally choose an appropriate quality option in GarageBand. If a recipient requests more than one format, the Mac export dialog lets you make separate files from the same project. Keep the original GarageBand project as well if you may need to revise the arrangement; an audio export is a rendered stereo file, not a substitute for the editable session.
Audio file or editable GarageBand project?
Choose Song for playback and upload
A Song export renders the project to a stereo audio file. It is the appropriate choice for playing the finished track in a computer’s Music app, sending it to someone who does not need the individual tracks, or uploading it to a service that accepts audio files.
Choose Project for continued editing
A Project share preserves the GarageBand session so another GarageBand user can work on the arrangement. It is not a universal audio format. Apple states that a GarageBand project cannot be opened on a Windows computer, whereas the exported audio file can be played in a computer’s Music app.
If a collaborator needs both flexibility and easy playback, make two separate shares: the editable Project and a Song export in the format the collaborator’s delivery system accepts.
Move an iPhone or iPad export to a Mac
Saving through Files is normally enough, especially when the destination is iCloud Drive. Apple also documents a USB transfer route when you need a local copy in Finder:

- In GarageBand for iOS or iPadOS, share the song and save it in the GarageBand for iOS folder or the GarageBand File Transfer folder, following the location presented by the app.
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to the Mac with a USB cable.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone or iPad in the sidebar.
- Open the device’s Files section, choose GarageBand, and drag the exported file to a Finder folder.
This cable method transfers an audio file that already exists; it is not required merely to perform the export. If the file is in iCloud Drive, download it from the Files app or Finder instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix common export problems
Only part of the song was exported on Mac
Return to Share > Export Song to Disk and inspect Export cycle area, or length of selected regions (if Cycle is turned off). If it is enabled, disable it for the full project. If you intentionally need a range, check the cycle area or selected regions and export again.
The beginning or ending silence is missing
GarageBand’s Mac export trims silence at the start and end. This is documented behavior, not necessarily a failed render. If timing around the first or last audible sound matters, place the musical content deliberately and account for the trim when checking the finished file.
Save to Files is not in the iPhone or iPad share sheet
Tap More in the share sheet, then choose Save to Files. Select a visible local or iCloud Drive folder and confirm the save before leaving GarageBand.
The exported file is hard to locate
On Mac, return to the folder selected in Where. On iPhone or iPad, open Files and check the location selected during sharing, including the On My iPhone or On My iPad area and iCloud Drive. Searching Files for the exact name entered in the share screen can also reveal the saved copy.
You need MP3 but iPhone or iPad does not offer it
The current Apple documentation does not guarantee a direct MP3 choice in every iOS/iPadOS export picker. Select an available uncompressed option, such as WAV or AIFF when shown, and use a separate audio-conversion tool that supports the required MP3 settings. Do not change a .wav extension to .mp3; that changes the name, not the encoding.
The file will not open on a Windows computer
Share the audio Song, not the GarageBand Project. Apple specifically notes that a GarageBand project cannot be opened on Windows, while a rendered audio file can be played in a computer’s Music app or another compatible player.

Importing the exported audio back into GarageBand
GarageBand for iPhone can import AIFF, WAV, Apple Loops, AAC, and MP3 files. Apple says that differing source audio is converted to 44.1 kHz, 16-bit format on import. Those values describe GarageBand’s import behavior; they are not a universal export recommendation and should not be used to infer the quality setting you must select when exporting.
When testing an export by importing it again, compare the imported file with the original player output and remember that the conversion may change the project’s source format. Keep the original exported file if you need an untouched copy for another destination.
Final export checklist
- Confirm whether the destination requires MP3, WAV, another audio format, or an editable project.
- On Mac, use Share > Export Song to Disk; on iPhone or iPad, use Share > Song from My Songs.
- Use MP3 when it is specifically requested or when compressed delivery is appropriate.
- Use WAVE/WAV for an uncompressed file; Apple’s SoundCloud example recommends Uncompressed (WAV) or Uncompressed (AIFF) for best results.
- Check the quality setting against the destination’s published requirements.
- On Mac, verify that the cycle-area or selected-region option is off when you need the full song.
- Open the saved file in an audio player and check the start, end, and expected duration.
- Keep a separate GarageBand project backup if you may need to edit the song later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can GarageBand export an MP3 directly?
Yes, GarageBand for Mac lists MP3 in Share > Export Song to Disk. Apple’s general iPhone and iPad sharing instructions do not enumerate every format offered in the current picker, so do not assume that every mobile version provides a direct MP3 option.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I export my GarageBand song as MP3 or WAV?
Choose MP3 when the recipient or service asks for MP3 or when compressed delivery is appropriate. Choose WAVE/WAV when an uncompressed file is requested or preferred. Check the destination’s own requirements; Apple does not establish one format or bit rate as best for every use.
How do I export only part of a song on Mac?
In the Mac export dialog, enable Export cycle area, or length of selected regions (if Cycle is turned off) and check the cycle range or selected regions before clicking Export. Leave that option unchecked to export the whole project.
Why is the silence at the start or end missing from my export?
GarageBand trims silence at the beginning or end during Mac disk export. Apple documents this as part of the export behavior, so it does not necessarily mean the render failed.
Can I share an editable GarageBand project instead of an audio file?
Yes. On iPhone or iPad, choose Project rather than Song in the Share flow when another GarageBand user needs to continue editing. A project is not an MP3 or WAV, and Apple says a GarageBand project cannot be opened on Windows.

Save the shared audio through Files, including to iCloud Drive if that suits your workflow. Apple also documents an optional USB route: save the file in a GarageBand folder, connect the device, then use Finder’s device Files section to drag the file to the Mac. The cable transfer is not needed to create the audio export.
What audio quality should I choose for SoundCloud?
Apple’s SoundCloud instructions recommend Uncompressed (WAV) or Uncompressed (AIFF) for best results in that workflow. This recommendation is specific to Apple’s documented SoundCloud example; follow another destination’s stated format and quality requirements when they differ.
The Bottom Line
For Mac, choose Share > Export Song to Disk and select MP3 or WAVE. For iPhone and iPad, choose Share > Song from My Songs and save through Files; select uncompressed WAV or AIFF when that workflow calls for the best results.
