You can explore real observations of stars, galaxies, planets and moons from a browser—no telescope required. Start with ESASky for the wider universe, use NASA Treks for planetary landscapes, or join Galaxy Zoo to classify galaxies; download archive data only when you are ready for a more technical step.

Choose a route based on what you want to see

Public astronomy data are observations collected by space missions and ground-based observatories. You can inspect many of them through web tools without collecting observations yourself. The right starting point depends on your question: ESASky is designed for exploring the sky and observations across wavelengths; NASA Treks is for planetary terrain; Galaxy Zoo offers a structured classification task; and archive portals help you find files to download or analyze.

It helps to decide whether you want to look around, study a particular surface, do a guided task or find files. Those are different activities, and a tool that is excellent for one may not be the best choice for another. If you are curious about a familiar sky object or want to compare observations, begin with ESASky. If you want to trace a landscape on a planet or moon, use Treks. If you would rather make a contribution through a defined task, look for an active Galaxy Zoo activity. If you need actual files, start with the relevant archive or catalog and check what kind of product it provides.

Route Best for What it offers
ESASky Exploring the sky and comparing observations Visual exploration across wavelengths and missions, with data downloads available without login or registration
NASA Treks Exploring planets and moons Browser-based surface visualizations, 3D flyovers and measurements using spacecraft data
NASA’s Planetary Photojournal Browsing curated planetary imagery Public planetary images and associated products from JPL missions
Galaxy Zoo Taking part in a research-related activity Volunteer classification of galaxy shapes in astronomical images
ESO Science Archive Finding observations from ESO telescopes Browser-based search and access to processed files
NASA Open Data catalog Discovering NASA datasets Dataset descriptions and links to the systems that host the data

These are entry points into particular collections, not a single portal containing every public astronomy dataset. Some tools present imagery for easy viewing; others help locate files that require additional software and processing. A portal can also be a directory rather than the place where a file is stored: NASA says its Open Data catalog describes datasets and links to the systems that host them.

Start with ESASky for a visual tour of the sky

ESASky is a browser-first way to look around the sky and explore observations from different missions and wavelengths. ESA describes it as usable on computers, tablets and mobile devices. Its Explorer mode is aimed at visual exploration; Science mode adds data download and other features. ESASky can download available data without login or registration.

  1. Open ESASky in a browser. You can use it on a computer, tablet or mobile device.
  2. Search for a familiar astronomical object or navigate around the sky. Choose a target you already recognize if this is your first visit.
  3. Explore the available observations and compare how the target appears across missions or wavelengths. These observations are not necessarily identical photographs: different instruments and wavelengths can reveal different aspects of an object.
  4. Stay in Explorer mode if you want to browse visually. If you want to investigate or download available data, switch to Science mode and use its additional features.
  5. Before treating a displayed view as a scientific conclusion, check what observation or product it represents. A visualization helps you explore; it does not by itself explain how the data were calibrated or what can be inferred from them.

A useful first visit can be as simple as choosing an object you recognize, looking at the available observations, and asking what changes when you view it through another mission or wavelength. The point is not to assume that each view is a different camera photograph of the same scene. Instruments observe in different ways, so a comparison is a way to notice differences in the available data, not a guarantee that the images can be read as interchangeable pictures.

ESA reported in 2018 that ESASky contained data from over one million astronomical observations. That is a historical figure from ESA’s 2018 article, not a verified current count. ESA described the aim as broadening access to observations from its spacecraft and space telescopes while providing science-ready products. Current holdings and interface behavior can change.

Use NASA Treks when your question is about a world

If you want to explore a planetary surface rather than look across the sky, NASA’s Treks portals provide browser-based visualizations built from spacecraft data. The portals support 3D flyovers and measurements of surface features, making them a better fit for questions such as how a landscape is arranged or how a feature compares with its surroundings.

  1. Open NASA’s entry points to science data and choose a Treks portal suited to the world you want to explore.
  2. Use the browser visualization to inspect the surface and orient yourself around the terrain.
  3. Try a 3D flyover to view the landscape from another perspective.
  4. Use the measurement features when you want to examine a surface feature quantitatively. Treat the result as a measurement within the tool, not as a substitute for understanding the underlying data and its context.

Treks is a good choice when the question is spatial: where is a feature, how is it situated in the surrounding terrain, or what does the landscape look like from a different perspective? A flyover can help you orient yourself, while a measurement tool lets you examine a feature rather than relying only on visual impression. The interface makes spacecraft data more approachable, but the visual model is still a way of presenting data, not a reason to overlook what the measurement represents.

For an image-led introduction to planetary exploration, NASA’s Planetary Photojournal links to public planetary images and associated products from JPL missions. It is a useful alternative when you want to browse curated imagery rather than navigate a terrain model. Choose Photojournal for a collection of images and their associated products; choose Treks if you want to move around a surface and inspect terrain.

Make image inspection an active task with Galaxy Zoo

Galaxy Zoo turns looking at astronomical images into a volunteer activity: participants classify galaxy shapes. ESA presents it as a project for public participation, and NASA also describes it as a web-based resource using science data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open ESA’s space-science resources page or NASA’s research archives and tools page to find Galaxy Zoo.
  2. Check the project itself for a currently active task before starting. Availability of a particular activity can change.
  3. Follow the project’s instructions for classifying images. Your role is to make the requested classifications, not to interpret every image as a professional astronomer would.

This route differs from an atlas or image gallery: the point is to contribute structured classifications, rather than simply browse a target of personal interest. It is an option for readers who want a task to do with images rather than only a visual tour. The project is described as volunteer classification of galaxy shapes; do not assume that every visit will present the same active task, so check the project’s current page before planning around a particular activity.

Move from browser views to archive downloads when ready

When you want to work with actual files, the ESO Science Archive provides browser-based search and access to processed files from ESO telescopes. NASA’s Open Data catalog serves a different purpose: NASA says it describes datasets and links to the systems where they are hosted. A catalog listing is therefore a discovery step, not a promise that the page itself contains a ready-to-view image.

  1. Start at the archive or catalog that matches the mission or observatory whose data you want. For ESO observations, use the ESO Science Archive; for discovering NASA datasets, use the NASA Open Data catalog.
  2. Read the dataset or observation description before downloading. Confirm that it concerns the object or measurement you are interested in.
  3. Prefer a processed product when one is available and your goal is to inspect observations rather than learn a full reduction workflow.
  4. Follow the archive’s links or download controls to reach the actual hosted data. The NASA catalog may direct you to another system.
  5. Keep the product’s context with the file: its description and processing status help determine whether it is meant for immediate viewing or further analysis.

The distinction between an archive search and a download matters. A search result may help you identify a dataset, while the actual data reside in a linked hosting system. Read the description and follow the destination rather than assuming that every catalog page is itself a viewer or file download. For ESO, the Science Archive offers processed files through a browser-based route; even then, check the description to see what the product is and whether it matches your purpose.

Archive research is not an obscure substitute for new observations. ESO reported that 24% of papers using its archive in 2022 relied on archival data alone. This figure applies to papers using the ESO archive in that year; it is not a measure of all astronomy papers worldwide.

Know the difference between a visualization, a processed product and raw data

A polished browser view is the easiest way to explore, but not every archived file is a finished picture. The interface may render data for viewing, link to processed products, or provide access to observations that still need work. Those are different stages, and the file extension alone does not tell you what a dataset means or how ready it is for interpretation.

  • Visualization: A portal presents observations in a form that is convenient to browse, such as a sky view or planetary terrain model. It is a useful way to orient yourself and ask questions.
  • Processed or science-ready product: Data have undergone processing intended to make them more usable for scientific purposes. Check the archive’s description rather than assuming every download has this status.
  • Raw observation: The measurement as recorded by an instrument may include effects from the instrument, atmosphere or telescope. ESO explains that calibration and reduction are needed to address these effects, and pipelines may be used to produce science-ready data.

Calibration and reduction are not decorative extra steps. An observation can reflect the instrument, the atmosphere or the telescope as well as the astronomical target. ESO explains that those effects must be calibrated and that raw observations may need pipelines to become science-ready. For a beginner, the practical takeaway is simply to check the product description and processing status before treating a downloaded file like a finished image.

FITS is the astronomy format most widely used to transport, analyze and archive scientific data. It is a container format, not a guarantee that a file will open as a familiar image or be immediately interpretable. Raw FITS data may require specialist tools and processing. For a first exploration, start with a browser-rendered view or a processed observation; treat raw-file analysis as a later step.

That makes a sensible progression possible: begin with a browser rendering, move to a processed product if you want to inspect an observation more closely, and only then decide whether handling raw files is useful for your question. You do not have to learn FITS or run a processing pipeline just to explore public observations. If your goal becomes scientific analysis, the file format and processing status become important parts of the task rather than incidental details.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Expecting one portal to contain everything. ESASky, Treks, Photojournal, Galaxy Zoo and the archive services cover different routes and collections. NASA describes its Open Data catalog as a discovery layer that links out to data-hosting systems, not as a universal astronomy image viewer.
  • Assuming every download is an image. Some archive products are processed files; raw observations may need calibration and reduction. A FITS extension alone does not tell you whether a file is ready for viewing or interpretation.
  • Reading a visualization as a complete scientific answer. A rendered view can help you explore, but check what observation or product it represents and what its processing status is before drawing conclusions.
  • Confusing a planetary image gallery with a terrain tool. Photojournal is an image-led route to curated public imagery and associated products. Treks is the more appropriate choice for browser-based surface exploration, flyovers and measurements.
  • Assuming a volunteer task is always available. Galaxy Zoo is a project for classifying galaxy shapes, but readers should check for a currently active task on the project itself.
  • Thinking you need to buy equipment first. These browser tools and archive pathways offer ways to explore public observations without buying or operating a telescope. Downloads and analysis are optional next steps, not prerequisites for a first visit.

A simple progression for a first session

  1. Pick a question, not a download. Decide whether you want to look at a sky object, inspect planetary terrain, browse curated images or participate in a classification task.
  2. Choose the matching browser tool. Use ESASky for sky-wide and multi-wavelength exploration, Treks for planetary surfaces, Photojournal for curated planetary imagery or Galaxy Zoo for volunteer classification.
  3. Explore before exporting. Get familiar with what the interface shows and what kind of observation or product you are viewing.
  4. Move to an archive only if you need the files. Use ESO’s archive for its processed telescope observations or NASA’s catalog to discover datasets and follow links to their host systems.
  5. Check processing status before interpreting a file. If it is raw, calibration and reduction may be required; downloading alone does not make it a finished scientific image.

You do not need to buy or operate a telescope, or obtain paid software, to make a first visit to these public browser tools. Downloading and analysis are optional; they become useful when your question calls for working directly with archived files. Start with the viewing experience that matches your curiosity, then move deeper only if the question you want to answer calls for it.

What is a FITS file, and can I open it like a photo?

FITS is the astronomy format most widely used to transport, analyze and archive scientific data. The format alone does not make a file a finished picture or immediately interpretable; raw FITS data may require specialist tools and processing. Start with browser-rendered views or processed products if you are new to the data.

Does NASA’s Open Data catalog contain the files I want to view?

Not necessarily. NASA describes the catalog as a place to discover dataset descriptions and links to the systems that host the data. A catalog entry may take you to another archive rather than to a ready-to-view image.

Can I contribute rather than just browse?

Galaxy Zoo offers volunteer classification of galaxy shapes in astronomical images. Check the project itself for a currently active task, then follow its instructions for classifying images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is archive data used in real astronomy research?

Yes. ESO reported that 24% of papers using its archive in 2022 relied on archival data alone. That figure applies specifically to papers using the ESO archive in that year, not to astronomy papers worldwide.

The Bottom Line

You can explore real public astronomy observations without a telescope, a purchase or a download. Start with ESASky for the wider sky, NASA Treks or Photojournal for planetary worlds, and Galaxy Zoo for a guided classification task. When you do move to archive files, check whether you have a processed product or raw data: downloading a file does not automatically make it a finished image.
