The most reliable way to explore an open-world game thoroughly is to run a short loop: inspect the region’s map legend, filters, journal and progress tracker; reveal nearby detail with viewpoints or observation; mark vague clues; complete activities in local clusters; then check the tracker again before moving on. This preserves the pleasure of discovery while giving forgotten objectives a place to wait.

Do not assume every game uses conventional side-quest markers or collectible icons. Some titles track missions explicitly, while others hide optional stories in encounters and world events. Adapt the loop to the tools and quest design of the game you are actually playing.

The repeatable exploration loop

Use this six-step routine whenever you enter a new region, settlement or map layer. It is a decision process, not a demand to clear every icon immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Audit the region. Open the map and read its legend. Turn on useful filters, inspect the journal or quest board, and look for a completion or progress screen.
  2. Reveal nearby information. Climb a viewpoint, use a scouting or observation ability, or survey prominent landmarks if the game provides those tools.
  3. Separate known objectives from leads. Mark quests with clear destinations, and create a separate marker for clues that identify only a broad area.
  4. Work in a local cluster. Combine nearby missions, points of interest and collectibles so that travel between them does not erase what you noticed.
  5. Record what remains uncertain. Keep a marker, note or journal entry for an unresolved clue instead of relying on memory.
  6. Recheck before leaving. Review the map, journal and progress tracker after the cluster. Only then decide whether to continue the story, move to another region or consult a guide.

The loop is intentionally flexible. A game with dense map icons may need more filtering; a discovery-focused game may require more observation and note-taking.

Before leaving an area, use the game’s own tracking tools

Your first source of truth should be the game’s interface, not a web checklist. Many open-world maps contain several layers of information that are hidden by default.

Read the legend and filters

Open the map legend and identify the symbols for missions, activities, points of interest, vendors, fast-travel locations and collectibles. Toggle categories one at a time if the screen is crowded. A clean view makes an unvisited symbol easier to distinguish from a completed one.

Assassin’s Creed Unity documents map filters, custom map markers and a progress tracker that lists completed and available missions. These are features of that game, not a guarantee that every open-world title offers the same controls. The Ubisoft map overview and the Unity manual show how those tools are presented there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the journal, quest board and activity pages

Look for separate tabs for active quests, completed quests, discovered clues, contracts, challenges and region progress. Read the objective text rather than trusting the map marker alone; a quest may have an optional step or a condition that is not visible on the world map.

When a game has no explicit completion percentage, make your own small status categories: active, lead recorded, completed and uncertain. This prevents a vague objective from being mistaken for a finished one.

Use the tracker as a departure gate

Before fast-travelling out, ask three questions:

  • Does the journal show an available or incomplete mission in this region?
  • Does the map still contain an unvisited symbol after completed categories are filtered?
  • Does the progress screen distinguish discovered content from completed content?

If the game cannot answer one of those questions, leave a marker or written note so you can return deliberately.

Reveal optional content with viewpoints and observation

Discovery systems often reward looking from a height or using a dedicated observation mode before walking randomly.

Viewpoints reveal a useful first radius

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, viewpoints reveal nearby points of interest, while the map gains detail as the player explores. Treat a viewpoint as a scan, not a promise that every activity in the wider region has been exposed. After synchronizing or surveying, zoom in and inspect the newly revealed symbols before moving on. The game’s official exploration overview describes this discovery model.

Observation turns scenery into leads

Use observation on unusual buildings, conversations, tracks, environmental clues and other landmarks when the game supports it. In Shadows, observation can identify clues, objectives and unvisited locations. It is especially valuable when the map gives you a general area instead of a precise pin.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Reach a safe overlook or central position.
  2. Activate the game’s observation or scouting mode.
  3. Scan the horizon and nearby streets systematically, moving left to right rather than repeatedly checking the same landmark.
  4. Read each discovered clue immediately.
  5. Place a custom marker for anything you cannot resolve on the spot.

Director Charles explained the design goal for Shadows this way: “We didn’t want to hold the player’s hand too much with icons and markers.” That statement describes that game’s intended balance, not a rule for all open-world games. If your title deliberately limits icons, observation and personal notes become more important than searching for a hidden master list.

Capture vague clues before they disappear from your memory

The most commonly missed side content is not necessarily hidden; it is content whose instruction is too general to remember later. Treat every uncertain lead as a record-keeping problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convert a broad clue into a map object

When an objective says “near the old bridge,” “in the northern woods” or another broad description, pause and anchor it to the map. Place a marker at the likely landmark, then rename or color it if the game allows. If custom labels are unavailable, use a consistent symbol for “investigate later.”

Use an objective board when the game provides one

Assassin’s Creed Shadows uses an Objective Board to track selectable opportunities. Scouts can help reveal a more precise location, and an optional Guided mode assists objective tracking. The official exploration deep dive explains those tools. Use them in stages: record the opportunity first, request precision only when you are ready to pursue it, and enable guidance if navigation—not discovery—is slowing you down.

Keep your own note when the interface is limited

A short external note can be spoiler-free: record the region, landmark, clue wording and the next action, not the solution. For example: “West marsh, burned cart, return after finding the missing courier.” This preserves the mystery while preventing the clue from being lost among unrelated objectives.

Adapt to the game’s side-quest structure

“Side quest” can describe very different systems. Before applying a checklist, identify how the game delivers optional stories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tracked missions

Some games create named missions with quest-log entries, objective steps and completion states. For these, the journal and progress tracker can function as a checklist. Filter the map to show only incomplete missions, complete a nearby group, and verify that each entry changed to completed before leaving.

World events and spontaneous encounters

Other games deliberately replace conventional side quests with short, situational events. Ubisoft described Assassin’s Creed Valhalla as using bite-sized World Events rather than traditional side quests. Narrative Director Darby McDevitt explained the intended flexibility: “If one doesn’t feel like it’s your mood at that moment, you let it sit there in your quest log. Maybe sometimes you just do it right away.” The full interview is available from Ubisoft News.

For event-driven games, do not equate “no quest marker” with “no optional content.” Watch for unusual dialogue, environmental changes, distress signals and encounters that appear while travelling. If an event is logged, leave it in the journal until you choose a return route. If it is not logged, write down the landmark and circumstances immediately.

Discovery-first worlds

A discovery-first game may reveal points of interest only after you climb, observe, investigate or physically approach them. In that design, clearing every visible icon is impossible because the icons are incomplete by intent. Your routine should prioritize observation sweeps and landmark coverage, then use the journal to retain what you uncover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collectibles without turning exploration into a chore

Collectibles need a different rhythm from story missions. Trying to gather every item during the first pass can pull you away from an interesting encounter or send you into inaccessible areas before the game gives you the required ability.

Use a two-pass plan

  1. Discovery pass: collect items that are directly on your route and mark visible but inaccessible ones.
  2. Completion pass: return after the map, journal or progression system shows that the relevant area is ready to revisit.

Record the reason an item is deferred—locked door, missing tool, unclear clue or dangerous route. A reasoned marker is more useful than a generic “collectible” pin because it tells you what to check when you return.

Cluster by landmark, not by an enormous list

Group nearby items around a settlement, viewpoint, dungeon entrance or fast-travel point. Finish one cluster, then verify the local map and tracker. This limits backtracking and makes it easier to notice a collectible that was revealed only after an activity changed the area.

Distinguish discovered from collected

Some interfaces show that an item has been revealed without showing that it has been picked up. Look for a changed icon, counter or completion state. If the game provides no confirmation, use your own marker convention: for example, one color for “seen,” another for “collected,” and a third for “blocked.”

Approach How it works Best when Main trade-off
Discovery-first Use viewpoints, observation and landmarks; keep only light notes. You want surprises and minimal spoilers. You may revisit areas or overlook content that has no visible marker.
Selective guidance Filter the map, mark uncertain clues and enable optional tracking for chosen objectives. You want exploration with a reliable way back to vague leads. The map and notes require regular maintenance.
Explicit checklist Follow the journal, progress tracker or a game-specific annotated map item by item. You are finishing a region or cleaning up after the story. Exact locations can reduce the sense of discovery and may introduce spoilers.

These are practical comparison axes—discovery versus explicit guidance, map clutter versus selective filters, memory burden versus log support, and spoiler-free play versus exact locations—not measured completion rates.

When a printed or digital guide helps

Use a guide only after confirming that it matches the exact game, edition and platform context. A guide for a similarly named title or a different release can place markers incorrectly or describe systems that are not present in your version.

Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed Shadows – The Complete Official Guide as a Piggyback guide with walkthroughs, annotated maps, points of interest and collectible locations. The announcement is on Ubisoft’s site. Retailer availability, region and edition should be verified at the time you buy; those details are not established here.

Use a guide in stages

  1. Play the region naturally and keep your own markers.
  2. Consult the guide for a single unresolved area rather than opening the full collectible index.
  3. Compare its map labels with your game’s map and remove any marker you have already resolved.
  4. Stop reading once you have the navigation detail you need, so unrelated story spoilers remain hidden.

A guide is most valuable during cleanup, when the in-game tracker cannot identify which of several similar locations remains incomplete. It is less useful when you are still enjoying the surprise of discovering what a landmark contains.

A session checklist you can repeat

Save this compact checklist for each new region:

  • Open the map and inspect the legend.
  • Turn on only the filters relevant to the current objective.
  • Read every available journal, board or event entry.
  • Use a viewpoint, observation mode or scouting action if available.
  • Mark vague clues with the landmark and the reason they are uncertain.
  • Collect easy items on your route; defer blocked ones with a specific note.
  • Complete activities in a local cluster rather than zigzagging across the whole map.
  • Reopen the journal and progress tracker after the cluster.
  • Remove resolved markers and keep only leads that still need an action.
  • Choose whether to continue exploring, advance the main story or consult a matching guide.

Troubleshooting common “I missed something” situations

The map looks empty, but the region is not complete

Check whether the map is filtered to hide activities, whether the game reveals content only after observation, and whether completion is tracked in a separate menu. Revisit a viewpoint or central landmark before assuming the content is absent.

A quest marker points to a broad area

Read the full objective, search the named landmarks with observation or scouting, and place a custom marker at the most plausible location. If the game has an Objective Board or Guided mode, use those tools only after recording the clue.

You cannot remember whether a collectible was picked up

Compare the icon state, local counter and progress screen. If none confirms it, return to your own note and inspect the exact landmark rather than sweeping the entire region again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You found a guide, but it does not match your game

Stop and verify the title, edition, platform and region. Do not transfer positions from a guide that uses a different map layer or release; return to the game’s own tracker until you have a matching reference.

Bottom line

Explore in loops, not in one exhausting sweep: audit the map and journal, reveal nearby information, mark uncertain leads, work in clusters, and verify progress before leaving. Then adjust the balance between discovery and exact guidance to the game’s actual design—especially when optional content appears as world events instead of conventional side quests.
