To find the data behind a neutrino result, start with the observatory’s official data-release index or the paper’s linked supplementary repository—not with a search result or a dataset name alone. Check what analysis the files support, how events were selected and processed, and whether the release can be combined with other samples before downloading or interpreting it.
Start with the observatory or publication
First identify what you are looking for: a named event, a paper, an event catalog, or a dataset for a particular analysis. Search using the event designation or paper title when you have one; otherwise include the observatory and analysis topic. Then follow links to the experiment’s own release page or the repository attached to the publication.
For a broader first pass, Neutrinos Open Data is a directory of links to public datasets and benchmark simulations. It does not host every experiment’s data: use it to discover a candidate resource, then confirm details, versions, and terms at the linked experiment or archive. The portal lists examples from MicroBooNE, MINERvA, Daya Bay, IceCube, NOvA, and T2K; it describes DUNE as future or under construction, with its open-data policy still in development on the portal.

IceCube: use the release index and record
IceCube’s Data Releases page links to release records and describes when data become public. The collaboration says it releases data after its main analyses are complete and results published, noting that reconstructing events, rejecting background, and accounting for systematic effects are difficult parts of the work.

The index lists IceTracks-DR2, dated May 21, 2026, as covering track-like observations from 2008–2022: 14 years, adding four years to the previous release. IceCube also notes calibration and event-processing improvements. Those details identify the sample; they do not by themselves establish that it is suitable for every analysis.
Read the IceTracks-DR2 dataset record before using the files. It says the sample is commonly used for time-integrated neutrino point-source searches, is intended to supersede IceTracks-DR1, and should not be combined with other IceCube public data releases. That compatibility warning is consequential: releases with overlapping years or similar names are not automatically interchangeable or combinable.

KM3NeT: follow a named event to its paper materials
When you know an event designation, check the paper and its supplementary repository. The KM3NeT KM3-230213A repository supplements Observation of an Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Neutrino with KM3NeT. Its materials include data and single-hit information, Jupyter notebooks, scripts, and a Julia-based interactive event display. The README identifies examples including an event display, skymap, hit distributions, flux comparison, and an expected-event table.

These are project-specific explanations of how external data use is supported; they are a reminder to understand the processing and scientific context, not to treat a released table as raw detector readout.

Read the documentation before interpreting files
A public event file is usually a selected, processed research product. Before drawing conclusions, check the release record, README, paper, and any linked documentation for the following:
- Selection and topology: What event types or candidate criteria are included?
- Time span and detector context: Which data-taking period and detector configuration does the sample represent?
- Fields and response: Which reconstructed quantities, effective areas, angular or energy resolutions, and other response information are supplied?
- Purpose and scope: Was the release designed for a particular analysis, such as time-integrated point-source searches?
- Version and compatibility: Does it replace an earlier release, and does the record prohibit or caution against combining it with other public samples?
- Use conditions: What license, reuse disclaimer, or collaboration guidance accompanies the files?
These checks help distinguish a reconstructed event estimate from a direct detector measurement and prevent a dataset from being used outside its stated purpose. The KM3NeT access page also notes that external scientific use involves questions of scrutiny, authorship, scientific responsibility, and intellectual property; consult the project’s own guidance rather than assuming one rule applies to every observatory.

Open the KM3NeT example
The KM3NeT repository README says it is mainly based on Jupyter notebooks and provides an interactive event display. It documents two ways to begin:
Hosted notebook option
Use the Binder link provided in the repository to launch the hosted example environment. The README says full use of all notebooks requires retrieving the complete /data directory from the KM3NeT Open Data Center. The interactive event display is Julia-based, so do not assume it runs as part of the Python notebook workflow.

Local environment option
For local use, follow the repository’s stated Conda or virtual-environment setup and its installation instructions. Obtain the full dataset from the KM3NeT Open Data Center if you need all notebook content. The repository also specifies a BSD 3-Clause license and a data-reuse disclaimer; read both before redistributing or repurposing materials.
Use software as a tool, not as a substitute for release notes
For readers pursuing IceCube analyses in Python, icecube_tools documents functions for downloading publicly available IceCube information and loading effective areas, angular resolution, and energy resolution. It also describes simulation and likelihood workflows for reproducing standard point-source searches. It can help with analysis work, but it does not replace the documentation for the particular release you selected.
When two samples look comparable
Do not combine datasets simply because they concern neutrinos, share an observatory, or cover similar dates. Compare the release documentation along these axes before treating samples together:

- Available event fields and detector response
- Version status, supersession, and combination policy
- Software requirements and data-use terms
IceTracks-DR2 illustrates why this matters: its record gives a specific analysis context, says it supersedes DR1, and explicitly says not to combine it with other IceCube public releases. For another collaboration or dataset, rely on that resource’s own current documentation rather than generalizing this warning into a universal policy.
Find a paper when you know the observatory
If you know the collaboration but not the release name, use its publication list to locate the relevant paper, then follow the paper’s data and code links. KM3NeT’s publication page lists peer-reviewed papers, including work related to KM3-230213A. A paper’s supplementary repository can be a more direct route to a single published event than a broad data catalog.
