The PS5 expansion slot accepts a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a Key M connector, a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, and a cooling solution that stays within Sony’s size limits. Sony recommends sequential read performance of at least 5,500 MB/s, but that figure does not guarantee behavior identical to the console’s built-in SSD. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
Choose the complete SSD-and-heatsink assembly carefully, install the drive using the instructions for your PS5 model group, and expect the console to format the drive on first use. Formatting erases everything on it. Sony’s current compatibility and installation instructions are at PlayStation Support.
What you need for a PS5 storage upgrade
PS5 consoles use a dedicated M.2 expansion slot. The slot is designed for a high-speed NVMe drive, not every product sold in the M.2 shape. A drive must satisfy all of Sony’s requirements at the same time:
Recommended Free Tools
| Specification | Sony requirement | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | PCI-Express Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe, Socket 3, Key M | The listing must say PCIe 4.0 x4 or Gen4 x4 NVMe. M.2 SATA is unsupported. |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB | Stay inside this range; a larger or smaller drive is outside Sony’s stated support limits. |
| Supported lengths | 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm | These correspond to the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 form factors. |
| Maximum width | 25 mm including the cooling structure | Measure the full assembly, not just the circuit board. |
| Maximum thickness | 11.25 mm total: up to 8.0 mm above the board and 2.45 mm below it | Include the SSD, heatsink, heat-transfer pad and any underside components. |
| Read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster sequential read is recommended | Treat this as a recommendation, not a promise of internal-SSD-equivalent performance. |
| Cooling | Effective heat dissipation is required | Use an integrated heatsink or a correctly sized heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. |
| Drive sides | Single-sided and double-sided M.2 devices are supported | The complete dimensions still have to fit, and Sony does not guarantee every compliant third-party drive. |
These specifications come from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support guidance. If a manufacturer does not publish the complete dimensions with its cooling hardware, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than guessing from the bare-drive dimensions.

Why M.2 SATA does not work
M.2 describes a physical card shape, not the electrical interface. An M.2 SATA SSD can look almost identical to an NVMe drive but communicates using SATA rather than PCIe. The PS5 slot requires PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe with a Key M connector, so an M.2 SATA drive will not be accepted. Sony’s FAQ answers the question directly: M.2 SATA SSDs cannot be inserted as supported PS5 expansion storage.
Why the heatsink changes the measurements
Sony measures the installed assembly. A 2280 board may fit by itself while a tall heatsink makes the finished drive too thick for the bay. The same rule applies to a thermal pad, underside plate or other cooling part. A drive with a built-in heatsink should not receive a second heatsink on top; the extra layer can exceed the height limit or prevent the cover from seating correctly.
How to select a compatible drive
- Confirm the interface. Look for PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe and Key M or Socket 3 language. Reject listings that say SATA, AHCI-only or simply M.2 without identifying the protocol.
- Choose a capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB. A larger nominal capacity is not an advantage if it falls outside the console’s stated range. Select enough space for the games and applications you expect to keep installed rather than buying on capacity alone.
- Check the sequential-read specification. Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or more. Manufacturers may quote a maximum measured under particular test conditions; use the published number as a compatibility screen, not as a guarantee that every game will load exactly like it does from the internal drive.
- Identify the form factor. The supported lengths are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. Match the drive length to the mounting position and supplied spacer in the console.
- Measure the complete cooling solution. Confirm width no greater than 25 mm and total thickness no greater than 11.25 mm, with no more than 8.0 mm above and 2.45 mm below the board. Ask the manufacturer for a drawing or complete measurements if the product page lists only the bare SSD.
- Plan for heat dissipation. If the SSD has no heatsink, buy a cooling structure and heat-transfer sheet that remain within the limits. If the SSD already has an integrated heatsink, use it as supplied instead of stacking another one.
- Check the manufacturer’s PS5 information. Sony says it cannot guarantee that every third-party drive meeting the listed specifications will operate correctly. When fit or compatibility is unclear, contact the SSD manufacturer before installation.
Prepare the console and work area
Installation requires opening the console’s expansion bay. Sony publishes separate procedures for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 model groups, so identify the model group printed on your console and follow the matching illustrated guide. The broad operation is similar, but the cover-removal sequence is not interchangeable.

Install the M.2 SSD
The exact panel orientation and cover-release points depend on the model group. Use Sony’s illustrated instructions for your CFI-1000 or CFI-2000/7000 console rather than forcing a panel. The following sequence explains what the installation accomplishes:
- Prepare and position the console. Place the powered-down, unplugged console as shown in the guide for your model group. Confirm that the work surface will not scratch the case.
- Remove the appropriate outer cover. Release the cover using the model-specific method. Never pry against the expansion bay or use a metal tool to force a stuck panel.
- Open the expansion-slot cover. Remove the small cover that protects the M.2 connector and retain its screw safely.
- Set the spacer for the drive length. The mounting point is marked for the supported lengths. Move the spacer to the position matching your 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 drive before inserting the SSD.
- Insert the SSD at an angle. Align the Key M notch with the connector and slide the edge connector in fully. The free end should remain raised until it is secured; do not press straight down while the connector is misaligned.
- Secure the drive. Lower the raised end onto the spacer and fasten it with the supplied screw. The board should lie flat without bending, rocking or excessive pressure.
- Reinstall the expansion-slot cover and outer cover. Replace every cover before reconnecting power. If a cover will not sit flush, stop and check the heatsink height, screw position and drive alignment rather than tightening harder.
Do not modify the drive, remove its components or add a second heatsink to make it fit. If the finished assembly cannot be installed without force, its dimensions are not suitable for that console.
Format the drive on first use
When the PS5 detects a newly installed M.2 SSD, it displays a formatting guide. Formatting is mandatory before the drive can be used as PS5 storage, and it erases all data saved on the drive. Sony states that the entire drive must be formatted; you cannot reserve only part of it for the console.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Read the on-screen warning and confirm that the SSD contains no files you need.
- Start the format only after copying any important data elsewhere.
- Wait for the console to finish and return to the storage screen before launching a game or disconnecting power.
If the SSD was previously used in a computer, console or enclosure, assume that all partitions and files will be lost. Back up anything valuable before installation, not after the formatting prompt appears.

Use M.2 storage for games and applications
Once formatted, M.2 storage can hold PS5 games, PS4 games and media applications. Sony says you can download or copy these items to the M.2 SSD and launch them from there.
Set the preferred download location
Open the PS5’s Storage settings and use the installation-location control to select the M.2 SSD for the content type you want to install. The console can continue using internal storage for other content, so review the selected destination before starting a large download.
Move existing installations
In Storage, select the installed game or application and choose the move option, then select the M.2 SSD as the destination. Moving does not require downloading the title again, but the transfer can take time depending on the amount of data. Keep the console powered and do not disconnect the drive during the operation.
Understand the difference from USB extended storage
M.2 storage is usable as active PS5 game storage: PS5 and PS4 titles can be downloaded, copied and launched from it. PS5 games placed on USB extended storage cannot be played directly; they must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or an M.2 SSD first. That distinction is the main practical reason to choose an internal M.2 upgrade when you want more games ready to launch.

Performance expectations
The 5,500 MB/s figure is Sony’s recommended sequential-read speed, not a certification that every drive will match the internal SSD in every workload. Sequential throughput is only one part of storage behavior; game engines also depend on access patterns, firmware and other system activity. Sony explicitly cautions that games may not perform identically even when an M.2 drive exceeds the recommendation.
If a particular game installed on M.2 storage behaves unexpectedly, Sony’s guidance is to move it to the internal Ultra-High Speed console storage. That is a practical diagnostic step: if the problem disappears after the move, keep the title on internal storage and use the expansion drive for other games.

The PS5 does not detect the SSD
- Turn the console off completely, unplug it and open the bay again only after it has cooled.
- Verify that the drive is PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe Key M, not M.2 SATA.
- Remove and reinsert the SSD at the required angle, making sure the connector is fully seated before lowering the free end.
- Check that the spacer is positioned for the drive’s actual length and that the retaining screw holds the board flat.
- Inspect the complete width and thickness, including the heatsink and thermal sheet. A cover that cannot close flush is evidence of a fit problem.
- Confirm the capacity is between 250 GB and 8 TB and that the manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information does not exclude your model.
If all specifications and the physical installation are correct but the console still does not recognize the drive, contact the SSD manufacturer. Sony does not guarantee every third-party model, even when it appears to meet the published numbers.
The format prompt shows data will be erased
This is expected for first use. Cancel only if you still need files on the drive, remove it and make a backup elsewhere. The PS5 cannot preserve selected folders or format only a portion of the M.2 SSD.

The console reports insufficient space for the hardware
Recheck the assembled dimensions rather than relying on the SSD’s 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 label. The 25 mm width and 11.25 mm total-thickness limits include every cooling component. Replace an oversized heatsink or use a drive with an integrated solution that fits; do not force the cover or stack heatsinks.
A game has problems after being moved to M.2 storage
Move that game to the internal console storage and test it again. Sony specifically recommends this recovery path for problems with a game installed on M.2 SSD storage. If the title works internally, leave it there and use the M.2 drive for other installations.
A final pre-purchase and installation checklist
- PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M, Socket 3 interface confirmed.
- Capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB.
- Supported length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Sequential read rating of at least 5,500 MB/s recommended by Sony.
- Complete assembly no wider than 25 mm.
- Total thickness no greater than 11.25 mm, including the heatsink and thermal material.
- Effective heat dissipation provided without adding a second heatsink to an already-cooled drive.
- Manufacturer’s PS5 compatibility information checked when anything is unclear.
- #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver available.
- Important SSD data backed up before the console formats the drive.
- Correct installation guide selected for the CFI-1000 or CFI-2000/7000 model group.
Bottom line
A successful PS5 expansion is determined by the complete installed assembly, not by the M.2 label or capacity alone. Buy a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe Key M drive within Sony’s 250 GB–8 TB range, keep the cooled dimensions within 25 mm by 11.25 mm, install it with the model-specific guide, and plan for a complete first-use format. M.2 storage then provides playable space for PS5 and PS4 games and media applications, while USB extended storage remains a copy-back destination for PS5 games.
