Install a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD in the PS5 Digital Edition’s expansion bay. The drive must fit Sony’s length, width and thickness limits, include effective heat dissipation, and meet the console’s interface requirements. After installation and an on-screen format, the added M.2 storage can hold, download and run PS5 and PS4 games, as well as media apps. Sony sells the console and SSD separately; the official guide applies to both PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition consoles.
Use Sony’s model-specific illustrations for the physical cover-removal sequence: PlayStation’s M.2 installation guide separates CFI-1000 from CFI-2000/7000 model groups.
What an M.2 SSD adds to a PS5 Digital Edition
The Digital Edition has no disc drive, so every game is downloaded or installed from storage. An M.2 SSD increases the console’s high-speed internal capacity without replacing the original system drive. Sony says an installed M.2 drive can be used to download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games and to store and run media apps. The drive is installed inside the expansion bay rather than connected by a cable.

Choose the right SSD before opening the console
Compatibility depends on the complete assembly: the SSD, its controller and NAND, and the heatsink or other cooling structure attached to it. Check the manufacturer’s dimensions for the drive with cooling installed, not only the bare board.
Required interface and capacity
- Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M.
- Unsupported interface: M.2 SATA. Sony’s safety guide states, “M.2 SATA SSD is not supported.”
- Capacity: 250 GB through 8 TB.
- Supported physical lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 (30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm of usable length).
- Cooling: an effective heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, is required.
These requirements are published in Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD specifications and its PS5 Safety Guide.
Speed: a recommendation, not a guarantee
Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. That number is a buying target rather than a promise that every drive above it will perform identically to the console’s built-in Ultra-High Speed SSD. Sony explicitly warns that games may not deliver exactly the same performance as internal storage even when an M.2 device’s sequential read speed exceeds 5,500 MB/s. Treat the figure as a minimum recommendation and verify the model’s published specification under the measurement conditions given by its manufacturer.

Size limits include the heatsink
With its cooling structure attached, the complete drive must be no more than 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick. The supported lengths remain 30, 42, 60, 80 and 110 mm. A tall heatsink that fits the bare SSD can prevent the slot cover from closing, so measure the assembled height and width. Sony says single-sided cooling structures are easier to fit. Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 drives are supported if the complete assembly stays within the limits.

Do not stack an additional heatsink on a drive that already has one. Sony cautions that an extra heatsink can reduce the effectiveness of the built-in cooling unit. A bare drive paired with one correctly sized heatsink and heat-transfer sheet is a valid alternative.
Host Memory Buffer drives
Host Memory Buffer (HMB) is not supported. An HMB-equipped drive may operate, but Sony warns that it can be slower than expected. If the specification sheet identifies HMB, choose a different model for a predictable result.
Why a specification match still is not an absolute guarantee
Sony says it cannot guarantee that every third-party drive meeting the listed specifications will work. Before buying, compare the manufacturer’s full drive-plus-heatsink dimensions with Sony’s limits and retain the product documentation in case you need to confirm the exact model or return it.
M.2 expansion versus USB extended storage
Both options add space, but they do not provide the same behavior for PS5 games. Sony’s storage overview distinguishes the two as follows:

Prepare the console and work area
Update system software first
Install the latest PS5 system-software update before fitting the drive. The update ensures the console has the current M.2 support and formatting screens described by Sony.
Gather tools and protect the drive
- A #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver.
- A flat, protected surface and bright lighting.
- A small flashlight if the expansion bay is difficult to see.
- The SSD with its correctly sized cooling structure already fitted, if the drive is sold as a heatsink-equipped unit.
Before touching the SSD, touch a grounded metal object to discharge static electricity. Handle the drive by its edges and avoid touching the connector contacts. Keep the screw, spacer and covers together so none is lost during the work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify the model group
Sony’s instructions differ for the CFI-1000 group and the CFI-2000/7000 groups. Find the model number on the console and open the corresponding section of the official installation guide. Do not substitute a cover-removal step from another model group.

Install the M.2 SSD
The following sequence summarizes Sony’s procedure. Use the linked guide’s illustrations for the exact orientation and cover locations on your model.
- Shut down completely. Turn off the PS5 rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Disconnect the power, HDMI, network and other cables. Allow the console to cool as required by the model-specific instructions.
- Place the console on a protected flat surface. Work where the covers cannot slide away and where you can see the expansion-bay screw.
- Remove the correct console cover. Follow the CFI-1000 or CFI-2000/7000 sequence in Sony’s guide. Do not power on or play with a cover removed.
- Remove the expansion-slot cover. Set its screw aside. The slot is under a separate metal cover inside the console.
- Remove the spacer and retaining screw. The spacer can be moved along the mounting points for different drive lengths.
- Set the spacer to the SSD length. Place it at the position marked for 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm, matching the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 drive you purchased.
- Align the connector. Hold the M.2 SSD at an upward angle. Match the notch in the drive’s Key-M edge with the expansion connector and insert it fully. Do not force it; if the notch and connector do not align, remove the drive and check its orientation.
- Lower and secure the drive. Once the connector is fully seated, press the free end down onto the spacer and fasten it with the retaining screw. Tighten until secure, not with excessive force.
- Check the cooling structure and clearance. The heatsink or heat-transfer sheet must not block the screw, interfere with the connector, or prevent the expansion-slot cover from closing. Recheck the complete 25 mm width and 11.25 mm thickness limits if the cover will not sit flat.
- Replace both covers. Refit and secure the expansion-slot cover, then reinstall the outer console cover for your model group. Reconnect the cables only after the covers are in place.
- Start the console and follow the format prompt. The PS5 should display an M.2 formatting guide on first use.
Format the drive safely on first use
Formatting is mandatory before the console can use a new M.2 SSD. The process erases all data on that SSD, so never install a drive containing files you need. The console’s formatting guide appears after the hardware is detected; follow the on-screen confirmation to complete it.
Do not turn off the PS5, unplug it or interrupt data saving while formatting. An interruption can leave the drive unusable until the console can format it again, and any data on the drive is already subject to the erase operation. After formatting, open the storage settings to confirm the M.2 SSD appears with its capacity and to choose it as an installation location for games and apps.

Manage games after installation
Set an installation location
Use the PS5 Storage settings to select where new PS5 and PS4 games are installed. The M.2 drive is a separate storage location, so you can move titles between console storage and M.2 storage when you need to balance free space. PS5 games can remain on M.2 storage and run there; titles placed on USB extended storage must be copied to console or M.2 storage before playing.

Move existing games instead of redownloading
When console storage is full, move an installed title to the M.2 drive through the game and storage management controls rather than downloading it again. The exact menu wording can change with system software, but the destination list identifies the formatted M.2 SSD separately from USB extended storage.
Keep USB storage’s different role in mind
A USB drive remains useful for keeping PS5 installations archived and for playing compatible PS4 games directly. It is not a substitute for M.2 expansion when the goal is to launch PS5 games without first copying them back.
Troubleshoot detection, fit and performance problems
The PS5 does not show the M.2 drive
- Confirm the console completed its latest system-software update.
- Shut down, disconnect the console and reseat the SSD. It must enter the connector at an upward angle and be fully inserted before being lowered onto the spacer.
- Verify that the drive is PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M, rather than M.2 SATA.
- Check that the SSD is between 250 GB and 8 TB and that its physical length matches the spacer position.
- Inspect the heatsink for interference with the connector or retaining screw, and make sure the expansion-slot cover can close.
- If the drive still is not detected, consult the manufacturer’s complete dimensions and Sony’s statement that specification compliance alone does not guarantee compatibility.
The cover will not close
Remove the drive and measure the complete assembly, including every heatsink, pad and heat-transfer layer. The maximum is 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick. Do not compress the cover to force it shut; use a lower-profile, correctly sized cooling structure instead.
The console reports a formatting problem
Formatting destroys existing data, so confirm that the SSD contains nothing needed and repeat the on-screen process without interrupting power. If the drive cannot be formatted after being reseated and verified against Sony’s specifications, the drive or its cooling assembly may be incompatible even if its headline speed and capacity look correct.
Game loading does not match internal storage
Do not assume a higher advertised sequential-read number guarantees identical results. Sony states that games are not necessarily playable with exactly the same performance as the internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even when an M.2 drive exceeds 5,500 MB/s. HMB-equipped drives can also be slower than expected because HMB is unsupported.
Warranty and handling considerations
Installing an M.2 SSD uses the expansion bay designed for this purpose, but physical damage caused by forcing a connector, overtightening a screw or fitting an oversized heatsink is avoidable. Follow the model-specific cover sequence, keep the original screw and spacer, and do not operate the console with its covers removed. Sony’s support page includes a warranty question, but the cited specifications do not promise that every third-party drive will work; retain the drive’s documentation and check local warranty terms for your console and purchase.
Buying checklist
- PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M interface.
- 250 GB–8 TB capacity.
- 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 length.
- Complete width no greater than 25 mm.
- Complete thickness no greater than 11.25 mm.
- Sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s recommended by Sony.
