If your Samsung screen says “Downloading…Do not turn off target,” hold Volume Down + Power/Side together for about 7 seconds, until the device restarts. Samsung calls this screen Download mode; it is not the same thing as Android Fastboot. If your screen instead says “Android Recovery,” use the separate instructions below.
Exit Samsung Download mode
Samsung US recommends this button combination for accidentally entering Download mode:
- Press and hold Volume Down and Power or Side at the same time.
- Keep holding for about 7 seconds, until the device restarts.
The button name and instructions can vary by Galaxy model and region. If this sequence does not match your device, check Samsung support for your exact model and location. Samsung says the on-screen warning not to turn off the device applies when a technician is actively using Download mode; for an accidental entry, it is OK to turn the device off. Check the screen before using another exit method
“Downloading…Do not turn off target”
This is the Download mode screen addressed above. Use the Volume Down and Power/Side restart procedure rather than treating it as Android Fastboot.

“Android Recovery”
Recovery is a different screen with small text headed “Android Recovery.” Use the volume buttons to highlight Reboot system now, then press Power to select it. Samsung Australia’s instructions apply to Australian variant devices; if you are elsewhere or the controls differ, consult your local Samsung support. If Download mode appears again
- Remove the phone case and make sure no key is stuck or being held down.
- Restart the device once with the case off.
- If it still starts in Download mode, arrange service through a Samsung walk-in service center or repair appointment.
A poorly fitting case can press a hardware button as the phone starts and send it into Download mode. Samsung recommends checking the case and buttons; recurrence after that check is a reason to seek service. Samsung US Support: Download mode troubleshooting

If the phone is frozen at the Samsung logo instead
A frozen logo or an unresponsive phone is not the same issue as a Download mode screen. Samsung’s logo troubleshooting guidance says to ensure the device has adequate battery, then follow the model-appropriate Power/Side and Volume Down forced-restart instructions. The hold time in that guidance is for a different situation; do not substitute it for the approximately seven-second Download mode step. Samsung US Support: Galaxy device stuck at the Samsung logo
Avoid firmware flashing as a casual fix
Do not try to install unsupported software through Download mode to get out of it. Samsung warns that unsupported software can damage the device or leave it susceptible to hacking. A factory reset is also not a first response to an accidental Download mode screen: it can erase personal information. For a broader boot loop, Samsung advises checking for physical damage and charging, and notes that menus and steps vary by model and software.
