Use search-term exclusions to stop ads from matching unwanted searches, and campaign URL exclusions to keep AI Max from choosing specific landing pages. They solve different problems: excluding a URL does not block the searches that might lead to it. Start with Google Ads reports to identify what is going wrong, apply the matching control, then check the reports again. If the concern is an inaccurate ad message rather than a query or destination, review text customization and the generated assets separately.

Know which control addresses the problem

AI Max is an optimization layer for Search campaigns. Its controls include search-term matching, text customization, Final URL expansion, brand settings, and URL inclusions and exclusions. Google describes URL exclusions as a way to “Exclude specific URLs from serving as landing pages in your campaign.” They govern page selection, not query matching. Google’s AI Max overview describes these features and related reporting.

Problem Control to investigate What it affects
An unwanted search appears in the search terms report. Use the account’s query-exclusion controls for that search. Whether the campaign can match the excluded search. Exact syntax and match behavior depend on the available account controls; consult the controls in your account rather than assuming a universal rule.
An unsuitable page is being selected for ad traffic. Add a campaign URL exclusion for the specific URL or relevant URL pattern. Whether the specified URL can serve as a landing page. It does not, by itself, prevent matching a query.

Keeping those controls separate matters. If an irrelevant query is sending traffic to a page you want to keep available for other searches, a URL exclusion is too broad a fix. If a page is unsuitable regardless of the query, excluding only a search term leaves AI Max free to send other traffic to that page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A third situation is possible: the query and page are appropriate, but the automatically prepared ad text is inaccurate or unsuitable. That is not solved by excluding a search or URL. Review the generated assets and the text-customization setting instead. Diagnose the symptom before changing settings so you do not restrict useful traffic while leaving the underlying issue untouched.

Confirm the campaign and its enabled settings

Before changing anything, confirm that you are working in a Search campaign using AI Max, then review which asset-optimization features are enabled. Google’s AI Max setup instructions cover campaign setup, settings, and bulk editing. Google says new Search campaigns have AI Max selected by default; do not assume that every existing campaign has the same configuration or that every AI Max feature is enabled.

Pay particular attention to Final URL expansion, text customization, URL inclusions, and whether responsive search ad assets are pinned. These settings affect how AI Max selects pages and prepares ad text, so the right remedy depends on the behavior you are seeing—not just on whether the campaign is labeled AI Max.

It helps to note the settings before you edit them. Record which campaign is affected, which feature is enabled, the query or destination that prompted the review, and the change you plan to make. This simple baseline makes it easier to assess what changed if the reports look different later. Avoid making several unrelated changes at once if you need to determine which one addressed the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s setup interface and defaults can change. Use the current settings shown in your account and Google’s setup guidance rather than relying on an old menu path or assuming a newly created campaign behaves exactly like an existing one. AI Max includes separate features: a decision to restrict one feature should not be described as automatically turning off every other feature.

Exclude unwanted searches using search-term evidence

1. Find the actual queries

Open the campaign’s search terms reporting and identify the specific searches that are irrelevant to the campaign. Base exclusions on observed queries rather than broad guesses. Google’s AI Max reporting includes match or source information that can help explain how traffic was matched. Use the reporting context available in your account to assess the problem before changing targeting.

Look at the search wording in context. Ask whether it expresses an intent the campaign can satisfy, whether it refers to something the advertiser does not offer, and whether the issue is genuinely the query or instead the page or message that followed the click. For instance, if a reported search is unrelated to the product or service, it points toward query control. If the search is relevant but traffic lands on a page that should not be used, the destination is the more direct problem. These are diagnostic examples, not claims about how a particular account will match a query.

Use the available match or source information as context, not as a substitute for judging relevance. It can help you understand the reported traffic, but the decision to exclude should reflect the campaign’s actual purpose and the evidence in the report. If a query is ambiguous, investigate before adding a broad exclusion that could affect other potentially useful searches.

2. Add query exclusions through the controls available to your account

Use the account’s query-exclusion controls to exclude the unwanted searches. The exact menu path, labels, and negative-keyword syntax are not established as universal for every account configuration, so this guide does not give a one-size-fits-all click sequence. Check the controls shown in your account and verify the exclusion behavior there. Avoid assuming that an exclusion entered in one place automatically applies to every campaign.

Keep each exclusion tied to the issue you observed. An overly broad exclusion can prevent potentially relevant searches from matching, while an overly narrow one may not address the unwanted traffic. After applying changes, return to search-term reporting and look for whether the problematic queries continue to appear.

Before saving, review the scope shown by the account controls. Confirm that you are applying the exclusion to the intended campaign or other available scope, and that you have not selected a broader set of campaigns by mistake. Because match behavior and controls can vary, do not infer from the text of an exclusion alone that it will cover every related query. Check Google’s current help and the behavior exposed in your account if you need to understand a particular syntax or scope.

Keep a short change note with the unwanted query, why it was excluded, where the setting was applied, and when you plan to review it. That is especially useful when more than one campaign is being adjusted. It also discourages repeated, unexplained additions that can make it difficult to tell whether an exclusion is still necessary.

Exclude unsuitable landing pages

1. Identify the page or URL rule

Review landing-page reporting to see which pages received traffic, including pages AI Max selected. Google documents a “Selected by” field for AI Max landing pages, which provides context about page selection. Use it to distinguish a page selected through AI Max from one selected through another route.

Start with the actual destination displayed in the report. Decide whether one particular page is unsuitable or whether a meaningful group of URLs should be kept out. A specific page may call for a narrow URL exclusion; a broader URL rule may be appropriate only when the pages covered by that rule share the same reason for exclusion. Think through what else a pattern might cover before applying it, so that useful pages are not unintentionally removed from eligibility.

Also distinguish a landing-page problem from a tracking or reporting question. If the destination is unexpected, inspect the reported URL and the “Selected by” context before assuming that the URL exclusion is missing or ineffective. If the campaign uses a tracking template and Final URL expansion, verify that dynamic destinations work with that template before enabling or continuing to use expansion.

2. Add a campaign URL exclusion

Add the specific page URL or relevant URL pattern as a URL exclusion at the campaign level. Google documents these exclusions as preventing the specified URLs from serving as landing pages. Choose the narrowest rule that blocks the unsuitable destination without excluding pages that should remain available. A campaign URL exclusion addresses destination eligibility; it is not a substitute for a query exclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the campaign context as you enter the exclusion: the control is documented as campaign-level, so make sure the intended campaign is the one being edited. Review the rule itself and compare it with the URL in the landing-page report. URL details and URL rules matter; do not assume that a rule covers a different URL simply because the pages appear similar. When uncertain about how a particular rule is interpreted, consult the current account interface and Google’s documentation rather than guessing.

Think about the trade-off between control and reach. Excluding one destination gives AI Max fewer landing-page options for that campaign, while leaving it available preserves the possibility that it may be selected. Google’s cited guidance establishes what URL exclusions do, but it does not provide a universal performance prediction for a particular exclusion. Make the choice based on page suitability and monitor the resulting destinations rather than expecting a particular traffic or conversion outcome.

3. Check landing-page reporting after the change

Review landing-page reporting again after the exclusion is in place. Confirm that the unwanted page is no longer being selected and inspect the “Selected by” context for pages that still receive traffic. If the excluded page continues to appear, verify that the rule is in the intended campaign and covers the URL variation being reported.

Then inspect the remaining destinations for suitability. Removing one page does not establish that every other possible landing page is appropriate. Check that the pages still receiving traffic fit the campaign’s offer and that generated text, if enabled, accurately reflects each selected destination. If another unsuitable page appears, decide whether it needs its own exclusion or whether the rule should be reconsidered carefully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand how Final URL expansion and text customization interact

Final URL expansion lets AI Max choose a landing page beyond the ad’s final URL. Google says text customization must be enabled for Final URL expansion, so ad copy can match the selected landing page. If you want to use dynamic landing pages, check that they work with the campaign’s existing tracking template before enabling expansion. A tracking template that does not work with the destination can interfere with the intended landing-page experience.

This dependency matters when you are deciding how much destination control to keep. If you need AI Max to choose among dynamic destinations, verify the tracking-template compatibility and decide whether any pages should be excluded. If you do not want Final URL expansion, review the feature settings available in the campaign rather than assuming that a URL exclusion disables expansion or that disabling expansion removes every AI Max capability.

Text customization also means generated copy needs review. Google advises monitoring generated assets for accuracy. Check that the message remains accurate for the page AI Max selects; a suitable destination does not guarantee that automatically generated text is correct. Google’s text customization guidance explains the feature.

Review generated assets for factual fit and consistency with the actual destination. A page exclusion can change which destinations remain eligible, but it does not itself verify the copy. Treat destination suitability and copy accuracy as two checks in the same review, particularly after enabling a setting that allows page selection to vary.

Decide whether pinned responsive search ad assets are essential

Google’s AI Max FAQ says pinned responsive search ad assets are not respected when Final URL expansion and text customization are enabled together. It also says pinned assets are not respected when URL inclusions are provided. If pinning is essential to your ad, Google advises against using Final URL expansion or URL inclusions. These are specific interactions; do not infer that disabling one setting turns off all AI Max features.

Choose the configuration based on the constraint that matters most:

  • More control over selected pages: use campaign URL exclusions for destinations that must not serve, and review landing-page reporting.
  • Dynamic page selection: use Final URL expansion only after checking tracking-template compatibility and accounting for the text-customization dependency.
  • Pinned ad assets: avoid the combinations Google identifies as not respecting pinned assets; check the FAQ for the applicable settings in your campaign.

Google’s AI Max FAQ documents the pinned-asset caveats.

These choices are not simply “automation on” versus “automation off.” Consider whether you need a broader set of possible landing pages, whether particular destinations must be prevented, and whether the ad’s pinned assets are a firm requirement. Apply only the settings relevant to that requirement. For example, when pinned assets are essential, compare the FAQ’s documented combinations with the campaign settings before relying on pinning; do not assume a URL exclusion alone changes how pinned assets are treated.

Use a monitoring loop rather than a one-time cleanup

  1. Review search terms. Identify the actual unwanted queries and use the account’s query-exclusion controls for them.
  2. Review landing pages. Identify unsuitable destinations and add campaign URL exclusions for the relevant URLs or patterns.
  3. Check the reports again. Use search-term reporting and its match or source context to assess query behavior; use landing-page reporting and its “Selected by” field to assess page selection.
  4. Inspect generated assets. If text customization is on, check that generated copy accurately describes the selected destination.
  5. Revisit settings when behavior changes. Check the enabled AI Max features, tracking-template compatibility, and any pinned-asset requirements before adjusting automation.

This loop lets you address the particular failure—query relevance, destination suitability, or ad-copy accuracy—without treating a page block as a query block or disabling more automation than necessary.

Make the reporting review part of the change, not an optional final glance. First establish what is being reported and why it matters; then apply the corresponding control; finally check both sides of the traffic path. A query exclusion should be evaluated in search-term reporting. A destination exclusion should be evaluated in landing-page reporting. When copy is generated, inspect the assets as well. The reports provide useful context, but they do not remove the need to decide whether a query, page, or message is right for the campaign.

If the unwanted behavior does not appear to change, do not immediately add broader restrictions. Recheck the campaign and feature configuration, the exclusion’s scope, and whether the URL or query in the report is the same one the rule addresses. This keeps troubleshooting tied to observed evidence and reduces the chance of blocking relevant traffic while attempting to correct a different issue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a URL exclusion to solve a query problem. It blocks a specified landing page, not the search that triggered the ad.
  • Using a query exclusion to protect a destination in every case. Other searches may still lead to that page; use a URL exclusion when the destination itself should not serve.
  • Assuming every account has the same menu path or exclusion behavior. Google’s referenced overview confirms the controls, but does not establish one universal negative-keyword workflow or matching rule for every account configuration.
  • Enabling dynamic destinations without checking tracking. Confirm that the selected landing page works with any existing tracking template before using Final URL expansion.
  • Relying on pinned assets alongside incompatible settings. Check Google’s documented caveats for Final URL expansion, text customization, and URL inclusions.
  • Assuming all AI Max features are a single switch. Review the individual enabled settings and the specific dependencies Google documents.
  • Applying a broad rule to one isolated problem. Check what else a URL pattern or query exclusion could affect before saving it.
  • Making a change without checking its result. Revisit both query and landing-page reporting so you can see whether the intended problem was addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a campaign URL exclusion stop an irrelevant search from matching?

No. A URL exclusion prevents specified URLs from serving as landing pages; it does not block query matching. Use the account’s query-exclusion controls for unwanted searches, based on the search terms report.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I find which landing pages AI Max selected?

Review landing-page reporting. Google documents a “Selected by” field for AI Max landing pages, which provides context about page selection. Use that context alongside the reported URL to decide whether a campaign URL exclusion is appropriate.

Can I exclude a specific page without excluding every search that could lead to it?

A campaign URL exclusion addresses the destination, not the query. That makes it the relevant control when the page itself should not serve, while allowing query exclusions to remain a separate decision. Check the URL or pattern carefully so you do not rule out pages you intend to keep.

Does Final URL expansion work without text customization?

Google says text customization must be enabled for Final URL expansion so ad copy can match the selected landing page. If dynamic destinations are involved, also check that they work with any existing tracking template.

Will pinned responsive search ad assets still be respected with AI Max?

Google’s AI Max FAQ says pinned responsive search ad assets are not respected when Final URL expansion and text customization are enabled together, and are also not respected when URL inclusions are provided. If pinning is essential, consult the FAQ and avoid the combinations it identifies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check if an excluded landing page still appears in reporting?

Confirm that the exclusion is in the intended campaign and that it covers the URL variation shown in the report. Review the “Selected by” context and the campaign’s enabled settings. The documented guidance supports these checks, but does not establish one universal explanation for every reporting case.

The Bottom Line

Use search-term reporting to identify unwanted queries and the account’s query-exclusion controls to address them. Use campaign URL exclusions when a destination itself should not serve. Then check both reports, review the “Selected by” context, and inspect generated copy if text customization is enabled. Keep Final URL expansion, tracking-template compatibility, URL inclusions, and pinned-asset requirements in view when choosing the campaign configuration.
